@Anwar Umm. Your second highest scoring tag is [command-line]. I find it hard to believe you don't know your way around the shell.

@Anwar I think you should not feel guilty, because you gave a good answer!
Typical modesty

@terdon I know some. but honestly speaking I didn't know everything on that answer.

Wasn't it Hokusai who said in his nineties "now I am beginning to understand how to draw a line" ?
I still feel like I know nothing and I am an imposter here >_<
but @Anwar I think you are giving more excellent answers than anyone else these days...

hahaha, this is totally me right now

"ugh." xD
That's great

3:07 PM
@Zanna huh! at least not true for cli things. I'm a child in this area. Need to learn a LOT

@Zanna Join the club.

@terdon lol you are are guru

Everyone seems like a guru to someone :)

I'm glad that I'm with in company of some Gurus. tbh

I admit I am now at what I'd have called guru-level of knowledge a few years ago, but all that means is that my definition of guru has changed :)
Just like I no longer consider people in their mid-thirties to be old :)

3:10 PM
@terdon that is always a moving target, nothing changes this :)

exactly

@Anwar we can all walk in the light cast by each other here I think

I found a quote. "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room". At least I'm not in wrong room

hahaha

3:12 PM
I'm not smart. I'm passionate.

@Zanna agreed

I think most things are only a matter of desire - if you want to learn, you will learn

I learnt linux cause hardware was pricy, and I was bored with normal desktopish things ;p

@Seth I guess I'm a permanently exhausted night owl then...

3:23 PM
someone start a timer.
I just submitted a support ticket to my school's IT team.

15:23 UTC

time to go for a walk...
@Arronical I was watching this page waiting for your answer ^_^ askubuntu.com/questions/824004/…

@Zanna is that how you generate ideas

stop the timer!
wtf
they actually... replied quickly.

@edwinksl that's a secondary consideration, I need to move these lazy legs

3:31 PM
@Zanna It really hurt my brain, but I learnt some stuff. I'm sure there's a much cleaner and quicker way to do it!

@Arronical I am so grateful to the people who ask questions I can learn stuff by answering

@Zanna so you upvote them, right? :)
Sadly too many people do not vote much. Especially on questions.

3:46 PM
@Seth I only vote down. Because I'm mean. (Well, I reserve my votes for extremes in both directions. A really good question gets a +1, a really bad one gets a -1)

@Arronical nice one! You could get a simpler version of you like: there's no need to check if it's a file since rm won't remove directories so you can remove the if [ -f ] part.

asked same question twice askubuntu.com/q/824053/61218
I always try to vote on questions

yeah me too

@terdon Thanks! I knew that rm on its own wouldn't delete a directory, but I like to provide messages about stuff, it's probably better not to though, unnecessary overhead!

3:50 PM
so sad with Windows 10 mail apps.
Actually, most mail apps.
they all look horrible or have no features.

Thunderbird?

thunderbird... best features, sad design.

What is an US export classification? askubuntu.com/q/824064/367990

it's message list panel looks like something out of SquirrelMail. Outlook and W10 Mail looks way better but has none of the Thunderbird features
@ByteCommander government BS

What?

3:59 PM
US government garbage that dictates what can be exported.

@Zanna yay! That makes me happy :)

And what has this to do with Ubuntu?

Crypto
And other software things.
I feel like we've been asked this before.

yeah you can't always export encryption.
because "secrets" and other garbage.

Pretty much.
I feel like they need to be referred to Canonical.
Especially because it gets fuzzy with Ubuntu technically being a UK export and not a US one.

4:04 PM
@Seth Can't help noticing you're not on that front page there :P

Stupid bureaucracy and laws.

@terdon not anymore.. switch to all time though ;)

But I guess being 4th in overall votes excuses this month's lapse

fun fact. if i lived in the late 1990s with my knowledge today, i wouldn't be able to leave the US. Because I memorized the equations to RSA.
4

I end up mostly moderating so not viewing much of the good content anymore :(
@terdon wait, who passed me?!

4:05 PM
Damn, and I don't make the cut in the overall rankings either :(
I'm 4th on the second page. Grrrr

meh you guys are voting a lot if you're on the second page!

yay page 2763756

still haven't set off for my walk... gym will be packed when I get there

why go to the gym
just scroll your mouse wheel a lot

xD
Get a home trainer bicycle and use it to charge your notebook :)

4:15 PM
@Zanna We've also been here longer
Time to show off a bit. Here's an answer to that modulo 12 question in a single perl one-liner:
perl -e 'unlink grep{/(\d+)\.end/ && $1 % 12 != 0}@ARGV;' *

@ByteCommander idk but the UK has export restrictions relating to software unless it is "freely available for anyone to download" Therefor under UK export rules, I think there is no restriction on export of Ubuntu? And Ubuntu is a UK "product" I researched this for this answer askubuntu.com/questions/792167/usage-of-ubuntu-in-iran/… which I hope is right (IANAL)
"In all humbleness I think this solution is a lot nicer than the other answer:" that's not humble!
@terdon guru detected
perl terdon is really clever...

@terdon Perl code is literally unreadable.

but all code is unreadable until you learn the language...
@ByteCommander bicyle good for the quads, but you're still sitting down

@KazWolfe Well, that one's not too bad actually. You just need to know that grep applies whatever is in the brackets to all elements of the list you give it as input and returns the ones that passed. Then, the whole thing is given as input to unlink which is perl's rm.

@KazWolfe I have no mouse

4:21 PM
Apart from that, the expression is pretty classic: /(\d+)\.end/ && $1 % 12 != 0 The $1 is the first captured pattern (I believe even python supports that, doesn't it?) and the % is the modulo operator.
@Zanna Yeah, I like the deleted version better :)

right I am walking, before terdon's teaching triggers a brain overflow
@terdon both correct I think

There are a couple of issues with your approach: i) the argument is -maxdepth, not -depth and it needs to be before -name; ii) this will fail if any of the file names contain whitespace; iii) you are assuming the files will be listed in ascending numerical order (that's what your awk is testing for) but this will almost certainly not be the case. Therefore, this will delete a random set of files. — terdon ♦ 3 mins ago
:P

sigh, so many good questions and i ain't got time to answer them

GAH
I just went to the worst history class of my life.
All of World War I reduced to a half-page of notes.

@terdon oops! Hehe... I'm walking but the room is with me

4:29 PM
There was no mention of anything related to the actual war itself. The only thing we covered was the segregation of troops under Jim Crow. And the irony therein.

@KazWolfe I see your professor is fan of Cliff's notes

I mean, my god. TEACH SOMETHING ABOUT THE BLOODY WAR ITSELF

@Serg I know, and the weekend was a bit dry apart from that octal question,or did I miss any other good ones?

WWI should be at least two pages, even the abridged version.

I LOVE the stats page in mod tools... that's my favourite 10k thing

4:30 PM
ikr it's amazing

@Zanna I'll probably answer some of them tomorrow or later in the week. I'm just disappointed i can't snag some extra rep off them :p

@Serg I answered one on Saturday that I had in a tab on Thursday and forgot about, got +6 and accepted ^_^
It's nice to find things others have overlooked

@Zanna Nice ! To be honest, I'm quite impressed with your shell skills.

blush thanks! That means a lot, I'm just a beginner, but I love it :)

@terdon I do like your perls of wisdom. Thanks for the correction too! My answer felt really clunky!

user136984
4:38 PM
@Nathan: I am thinking about setting up a PPA, do you know any good guides for making deb files? I remember doing it once before with reasonable ease, but have completely forgotten everything.

god, my back is killing me today
that's what i get for staying up
I'm so regretting this

:( if only unicorn dollars could cure back pain...

When I stretch my back, it sounds like an elephant stepping on bubble wrap...

@ByteCommander You need to remove the wrapping from your new back scratcher silly.

The noise comes from inside me, unfortunately :(
ANd no, I did not eat it.

4:50 PM
@ByteCommander Damn, too slow :)

I recommend yoga to all of you, it really helps a lot, makes you feel good
It fixed all my hereditary back issues

Alcohol also works well.

user136984
4:52 PM
And they don't say anything about reinstating it. :(

@terdon Lol I haven't tested that method

@Zanna Well, it sorta moves the pain up to your head instead :P

user136984
@ByteCommander: Indeed... So, do you think they are just stupid or if they are malicious too?

@terdon ah I see, a bit like a garlic press moves the effort from prep time to clean up time in a cooking workflow

Not the first simile that would have occurred to me but yeah.

4:56 PM
Yoga moves pain from your back to your triceps for a while, but eventually it stops hurting :)

That apple.se post should not be starred, the answer is deleted by now anyway.

Sorry, I have special hate for garlic presses after some unpleasant encounters

Mine usually produces garlic juice flowing out and a lot of compressed dry garlic inside which does not want to get out again.

@Zanna I'm quite fond of them. Both for the effect on the food (musch simpler and IMO better than break+slice) and because it keeps my fingers from smelling of garlic for the next couple of days.
I just pass it under hot water and stick it into the dishwasher.

I suppose its holes are too small...

5:00 PM
Yes well, in theory they are excellent. Perhaps I've been unlucky
Sorry, I inadvertently introduced a really inane topic... >_<
These days I am too absorbed in AU etc to bother actually cooking, if it takes more than 20 min, I can't be bothered

I know that :)

wake me up in an hour guys, imma take nap

Enjoy

Once when I cooked rice while answering questions, I could throw the pot away afterwards... Since then I stay in the kitchen when something is on the cooker.
Huh? 10% battery?
But I'm plugged in all the time!
Grrr. Some stupid person switched off the wall socket I used.

Mmm rice I love... yes the time can vanish fast when answering

5:19 PM

I'd say dv...
As i recall, 12.04 has grub2

5:37 PM
@Zanna You love rice ? you should come to India once.

Moving Docker Hub's issues to GitHub may have seemed like a good idea at the time but it has now become a wasteland of abandoned issues and broken functionality.

Hi @NathanOsman

@SeverusTux Hello.

@Serg 30 minutes left

@ParanoidPanda ALL TORRENTS R PIRACY

5:45 PM
Hello everybody ! :)

Hello, time to go. I must mow...

i initially read that as "meow"

Hi @cl-netbox :D

@SeverusTux Hi my friend ! :)

@SeverusTux I certainly hope very much to do that :D
But Iranians also make wonderful rice - I learned my skills from them

5:58 PM
Oh.. I didn't know

@Zanna do you make BAKLAVA

Place where I stay, extreme strikes are going on. almost 65 buses were burnt today, Police Firing, 1 Dead, Curfew today, Tomorrow - possibility of "Shoot at site"

@edwinksl I can make a kind of it... actually I don't like refined grains like white flour and white rice and white sugar so much, so my pastry is not so light... brown is always better imo :)
@SeverusTux omg :( where is that? I hope you are safe

Bangalore
I am alright :) Thanks

@SeverusTux wait...what? why?

6:11 PM
Water Dispute b/w two states

hmm. same here.

:(

@Anwar This is the situation in one place : youtube.com/watch?v=k_fJ1cEatpI , Whole Bus station was set on fire, Many more Trucks were burnt too

I wish bloody Avaaz would stop sending me emails! I have clicked the "unsubscribe" button so many times and even told Gmail to send the stuff to spam but it still gets into my inbox! All of it! All 10k emails a day!!! >:{

Wut?
I probably haven't got 10k mails in my whole life.

6:24 PM
same here :P

How do you always manage to attract every malware and spam on the whole interwebs?

user136984
I ask myself the same question about random crazy people in the street. :P

user136984
I don't know why but they always come to me and really like me so they follow me around.

@Serg Wake up!

user136984
I had 2 on 2 separate days last week but normally I get more.

6:32 PM
@terdon Why is perl "much faster for thousands of files" ?

@Seth Jonathan Sampson is joining Brave.

@SeverusTux 15 more minutes

@SeverusTux :( I think it started as a reaction to the recent flood?

Starting this month, I'm joining the great people at @brave to face these challenges head-on. To make the web work for publishers and users.

also, someone tried to run my indicator on Ubuntu Gnome. . . .

6:36 PM
fun fact. my school internet redirects you to MSN.
Because why
(that and it's unsecured wireless, but meh)

@NathanOsman hey that's awesome!
Although I really don't think another browser is the right choice.

brave is nice... if we can turn off ads entirely.
also... when will advertisers learn that we use adblockers because the ads they publish are bandwidth-hogging, annoying, loud, flashy, interactive, malware risks?

@Anwar no, not because of flood. Its about how much water should be released from Karnataka Dam to TamilNadu, If its low, TN people conduct strike, If high karnataka people. Currently Karnataka people are not happy about the Subprime court Judgment.

if they used half-decent ads that don't eat up my 200MB data allowance the second I log on to a site, i wouldn't have an adblocker.
@SeverusTux why not a medium amount of water lol

That the problem, "medium" is different for both states.

6:42 PM
average out the mediums?

Might work, Decision on 19th Sep

That's why I like privacy badger. It blocks trackers and ads, but if an advertiser agrees to the EFF's rules for ads it will let the through.

nooooooooo

?

6:45 PM
@SeverusTux oh i see.

my nametag scrolled in

@Zacharee1 ?

sigh
my stalking and sarcastic skill have both disappeared :p

@Zacharee1 that's what high school does to you

@Anwar offensive?

6:51 PM
yay, I can see the deleted answer!

i don't

@KazWolfe i flagged as naa :)

@ByteCommander Well I never seem to get any at all, so maybe all of mine goes to him?

Bye Friends :)

6:55 PM
spotify just rickrolled me

@Serg Time up :P

@KazWolfe I think that's the problem they're trying to fix?
Now that they've got Sampson and Eich, it's pretty hard to just write it off...
If they adopt the multi-process Firefox improvements, it looks to be a worthy contender.

quck one: I'm playing with a raspberry pi

@SeverusTux seems correct for directories to which the user has no access

and at the end, I have this issue
raspberrypi-1.home (192.168.1.16) at (incomplete)
when doing an arp -a

@SeverusTux no!
it should work... could it be the terminal emulator they're using?
nothing to do with zsh

@Zanna yes. Try it e.g. for /root or another directory where you have no execution privilege.

yes obviously, but they mean it doesn't work anywhere, and the answer is suggesting you need elevated permissions to do it anywhere

7:54 PM
I agree.

@Zanna yeah the answer is unclear and misleading

Q: Polarizer filter for a Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM lens?

Nathan OsmanI have this lens, a Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM: I would like to purchase a polarizing filter for the lens but I can't seem to find one. A quick search on Amazon, for example, yields plenty of 49mm and 52mm filters but none for a 50mm lens. Am I looking for the wrong number? Am I looking in the wron...

I have discovered a great way to run cat5 in crawl spaces.
Tie one end to a dog, and call them over to the PoP

user136984
8:51 PM
I'm getting kind of worried with North Korea's new ability to make nuclear missiles. Is there not some sort of anti-missile system which can take out a nuke before it reaches its target?

user136984
Because I thought there would be, but I've haven't heard anything about one.

what would it do? Nukes are not sane. They are not even meant to be sane. There is very little saneness around them.

@ParanoidPanda it is very challenging to intercept an ICBM
if you know how to, many people will want to talk to you

hehe

remember DPRK's main target is the US, so they need ICBMs

user136984
8:54 PM
Why can't they just lock missiles onto it?

that's what i meant by intercept
it is not as easy as you think

user136984
Why not?

user136984
Can't they do it with other types of missile?

like i said, if you can show how to do it, write about it and people will come to you with job offers

user136984
But why is it difficult? Just the size of the thing or what is it?

user136984
8:58 PM
Can they at least detect them?

its extreme speed, low footprint
Japan, South Korea and China can probably detect launches after the launches happen
but they probably can't stop launches short of a full invasion of DPRK

user136984
How do the missiles know where to go and where they are?

satellite guided

user136984
Well, if the missile knows where it is, and the satellite knows where it is, then shouldn't you be able to track it with the signal?

user136984
Or how about just blast the satellite out of orbit?

9:03 PM
in any case, in the event of a launch, the best thing to do is find a nuclear shelter and hope for the best

user136984
Oh dear, well, North Korea's neighbours are now in danger, the missiles can even strike Japan now.

user136984
Shouldn't we do something about them before this whole thing gets out of hand?

don't think japan fancies being targeted by nukes a second time

@ParanoidPanda who's "we" and what do you suggest?

user136984
We = Western powers and our allies who are against this.

user136984
9:09 PM
Well, I think tough economic sanctions should be placed on China if they continue aiding NK. I mean, almost 100% of oil and food gets to them from China, if China stopped giving it to them they'd crumble.

that is a problematic definition imho...

user136984
Though I think that might just start some sort of war with China so maybe that's not such a good solution.

it doesn't seem to matter to those in power if people starve in droves

user136984
But wouldn't those in power also starve? I mean, if nobody trades with them or anything they should just collapse.

user136984
They don't really produce anything.

user136984
9:12 PM
They are becoming a real problem though, if we don't act now they could end up blackmailing us, or worse, actually nuking us. Something needs to be done about this, but I somehow don't think that the UN putting tougher sanctions on NK is going to really help very much as it hasn't so far. Why can't we just invade them? They are becoming a major security threat.

@ParanoidPanda do you have any ideas for app-indicators for Gnome ?
@Zanna same question for you , but for MATE

user136984
@Serg: Uhm... What kind of ideas?

any

user136984
Well, it would be nice if they were slightly more accessible.

user136984
And accessible while in the AO.

user136984
9:15 PM
Oh, or you don't mean so generally and you mean for specific ones?

@ParanoidPanda well, i'm asking more about coding ideas. The "accessible" part is up to GNOME devs and extension people. I only make indicators so far

user136984
Ok, well, let me have a think... It's a bit of a broad question though...

@Zanna oh you helped someone break out of that bash jail!

user136984
@Serg: I don't know that much about Unity and Workspaces on it, but why don't you allow automating of the switching for your other app?

@ParanoidPanda I already have allowed automating. It's in the latest update :)

user136984
9:24 PM
Ah

user136984
Why don't you make one for GNOME?

@ParanoidPanda i have tried it, and it can be made. But it requires installing appindicator extension. Also in Gnome launcher is hidden, right ? only when you open AO it shows up

@edwinksl when I wrote my answer, the question said something like "I set java_home and now I can't get out of bash" - I am a mind reader ;) (but I already got 215 and already got about 4 unpaid upvotes since 15:00 so I shouldn't be answering questions)
but thanks @Anwar for getting me an accept :) :)

@Zanna you can still be a bounty hunter though

@edwinksl anything look good?
@Serg I'm the last person to come up with useful ideas like that, but I'll keep thinking :)

Now I'm wondering how you'd fix your broken .bashrc without a GUI, on a server for example...
you'd have to do it in recovery I think, or live session

user136984
@Serg: Depends on if you install the Dash to Dock extension as I have done which puts it as a normal launcher which isn't just visible in the AO.

@edwinksl looks pretty interesting :)

@Serg, do you have an idea on how to make a unselectable item on a menu in Gtk?
appending a gtk_label doesn't work apparently
I thought about making a gtk_menu_item that would respond to the selection signal by desselecting everytime

@IanC label has to be for something . gtk menuitem proably would do

user136984
9:36 PM
@Serg: Why don't you make an updates indicator?

@Zanna have backup user . . . or use some grub parameter hackery where instead of init=/boot/blah , you do init=/bin/sh

gtk_menu_item highlight when you put your mouse over them, I was trying to make one that didn't, sort of a description on the menu. You can't append a label on the menu apparently, so I thought of making some crazy stuff with the menu_item to make it not "highlightable" haha
have you ever done something similar?

Not really

I had an idea, will try it and tell you if it works

@Serg ah yes I have a backup user for such eventualities myself... do you mean pressing e at grub menu you can do that?

9:40 PM
@Zanna yup, you can. And this is somewhat of a security hole obviously
They also cover live CD which is better approach

same as using a live session - but we want that security hole :)
I created a backup user on my Ubuntu system after making a login loop on my Arch system
it was extremely easy to fix
but now I use that user for other experiments
Smart idea! Thanks for showing me this... I think in Arch /bin/sh is normally a symlink to /bin/bash unlike in Ubuntu

with an appropriate avatar too

user136984
I associate different numbers with different colours, and different colours with different emotions. And thus as the years are numbers I end up associating them with certain emotions. I associate the 16 with yellow and a sort of broad openness but not in a good and safe way, kind of just too big. I also prefer odd numbers. So I will be happy when 2017 comes because I have a really nice safe and warm feeling associated with that. Though I also seem to have that association with Autumn!

user136984
Don't know why I just told you all that, but I was just thinking about it so I thought I would think aloud. :)

9:59 PM
@Serg, my idea didn't really work but I found something:
gtk_widget_set_sensitive(GTK_WIDGET, gboolean);
you can use it to make the widget "non-interactive"
only thing I didn't really like is the label get that grey style, indicating it's not interactive. I wanted it to keep the same style, but there might be a way around it

@ParanoidPanda I know somebody like that, but can't understand this way of thinking myself, to be honest.

10:19 PM
i can't test that bounty question so i can't answer it @edwinksl : / learned some stuff already reading about it though
bedtime :)

@Zanna night!

:)

10:47 PM
@ParanoidPanda are you a future Ubuntu release?
lol
@ParanoidPanda how about percise pangolin haha :D

How could this NAA stay on the site for 4 years!? askubuntu.com/a/112929/367990

user136984
@ByteCommander: You wouldn't believe how many questions I see which are EOL and should have been closed (and they were asked after the release went EOL) as such but are still open. In fact I can't believe that a huge amount of them have comments from people with enough rep to cast a close vote, even moderators, but they are still not closed and without any close votes.
