12:01 PM
never heard of that site
:P

is one of those websites with some challenge pages with security flaws, and your goal is to be able to authenticate or bypass the page @ThomasW.

@IanC I think if you want to go for the coding side of web/internet/info security then yes
but that's only one small niche
and security's a hugely wide umbrella
from a sysadmin background, I work as a sysadmin
with security training for additional tasks
and the ability to do border-network protection and intrusion detection/incident response
less so the nitty gritty of security code review

cool!
what are other niches on internet security besides the coding side of it?

You also have malware analysis people
And people who know everything about TLS/SSL

12:07 PM
link dump incoming

There's a wide umbrella of umbrella's

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_security
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_security
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_security
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_security
to give four different umbrellas
there's a billion different focus areas though
going from general to highly speclialized
you've got the malware analysis, the security engineers, network security people, general computer security people, information security specialists...

I don't know if I said this before
Maybe I have, like 3 times
But I think your first question @IanC, was really good
Not much questions are like that, let alone first time questions

@IanC It's so wide a topic I can't really give any insight. That said, go visit the information security stack exchange and see what kind of things get asked there maybe
but note that that's the infosec side
(there's just too many umbrellas!)

@grooveplex, Thanks man! I've been around askubuntu for a while, but just as a spectator. Now I decided to join in :)
@ThomasW. I wouldn't even know what niche interests me the most lol
but I'll look this stack exchange! I guess I even readed a few answered questions there before

12:16 PM
Also, do you know Meta, @IanC? It's like the Stack Exchange newspaper, where we discuss Ask Ubuntu itself. meta.askubuntu.com

I didn't know it! Will check it out

It's okay if you just occasionally visit there to catch up with the latest
You can just visit casually and read about what's going on

It's cool how stackexchange websites design theirselfs to be self sustainable
themselfs*

@IanC themselves* :)

I mean, this works better than the ubuntu forums for example

12:20 PM
But I agree

answers comes faster, things are more dynamic, easier for people to spot bad answers

And it feels like I'm actually part of the community

someone coming from a forum website might find it a bit hard at first to be more up to the point in questions and answers, but I guess that's a good thing for an informational website

I frequently see 'thanks' answers, like we're used to in forums
But that's not how it works
We have upvotes here
If you ever see something bad, you can flag it

I guess I did some thanking myself hahaha

I think not
@Zacharee1 @IanC, this is flagging in practice
Go to the question and then click the little flag link and flag it as off-topic

'flag > should be closed'?

Yes

guess it was the closest to off-topic

Well, you then click should be closed and then off-topic
And then the magic flag question button

12:28 PM
last option is 'bug report'?

@IanC I'd say This is not about Ubuntu.

once you get 3k rep you'll be able to actually vote to close questions instead of just flagging them
still need 4 other people to agree with you, but it's more direct

done!

I need to tell you about the great @SmokeDetector that hangs around here

12:31 PM
I've seem it a few times

I love Simon's Cat

it's like a bot that shows some suspicious question pages?

Yes
And then you go there and... flag it as spam
Don't downvote it
Flag it

it's not always spam
sometimes it's abuse or rude

Not always

12:33 PM
I just said that

But it's smoke and it usually gets removed within 30 seconds

12:58 PM
Why is openssl_random_pseudo_bytes called the way it is and not openssl_pseudo_random_bytes?

@Zacharee1 I think this is totally on topic

1 hour later…
2:21 PM
I also thought that was on-topic, glad someone much more experienced than me agrees

2:50 PM
@Zanna were you successful in making Google free keyboard

Q: Redirecting all tcp traffic to Tor using iptables (proxy?)

GalaI'm on the verge of smashing my T61 into pieces. I've installed tor, and put this in the torrc file, as indicated by the Tor Wiki: VirtualAddrNetworkIPv4 10.192.0.0/10 AutomapHostsOnResolve 1 TransPort 9040 DNSPort 53 And I've saved this to an .sh file and run it: #!/bin/sh _non_tor="192.16...

@ByteCommander Isn't yakkety the current one?

@CodeX not tried yet, still super busy. Maybe this weekend I'll take a look :) my brother in Japan has been hacking away at his own phone so we can collaborate maybe

@terdon no
@terdon 16.04 Xenial is current
16.10 Yakkety is in development

Ah, right. 16 10
poof

@terdon any issue with me pruning your comment on that question because of it now being closed?
(and not really as relevant anymore)
meh i'll leave it :)
sips coffee

3:48 PM
@ThomasW. Nah, I removed it and no, there would have been no issue had you done so.

cool
so other than me having to have a headache with Mac stuff today (read: evil morning), how's things here

1 hour later…
5:09 PM
so it was not just me who used "sudo nautilus" omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/07/use-gedit-as-root-ubuntu-pkexec

can help me
Thank you in advance

6:08 PM
You should probably ask a question on the main site and describe in detail what you want to achieve instead of just linking a blog talking about Kali Linux.
ARGV!
Another annoying nvidia driver update for Windows...

6:23 PM
real men do not remove their messages...

How can I post a user post in chat?

A: When installing from the bootable USB, I get an error on my monitor (Monitor Out of Range)

Mudit Kapil1.) When running the installer, just before the error occurs, you will see this cryptic screen: 2)That cryptic little keyboard next to that cryptic little man apparently means “press any key.” If you do that, a menu will pop up. First, select a language, then press F6 (“Other Options”). A new men...

😀 afternoon

Thanks autocorrect - you just made me write "implantation" instead of "implementation".

that could possibly be an embarrassing mistake

And that's why I have it disabled on my phone

real men don't use autocorrect

7:11 PM
Just got the first bit of spam in my inbox that I've ever got (don't think any real spam has actually gone into my spam box either)! :D

One of my friends was trying to ask me what means "Regrexit" and autocorrect changed it to "Regret" , which is when I had enough and was like "Back you autocorrect !" ( yes, it did change f-word into "back" )

user136984
I mean like from a spammer, got plenty of odd targeted spam at one point from someone... But this looks more like a spammer who is not targeting me.

I just flagged an answer about Windows as NAA....... on Super User
:/

I haven't gotten much spam until I started working on my linkedin account
Or maybe people find my email here, on AU

you never know
maybe you will get a job because someone saw your AU posts

7:15 PM
I would be happy if that happened so

did anything happen with your suse internship app?

user136984
Facepalm... Google Translate just decided that it should 'traslate' a URL into English (it wasn't even in a foreign language, it was just a usual URL)! (It does it automatically in my email program.) :D

Nope. Didn't even get an email

@ParanoidPanda To be fair, SEO is a really weird language

Must. Not. Make. Joke.

And, they ran out of all their money.

7:36 PM
money leak

though i'm fairly sure his needs subroutine is async, so when isTired() returns true, he should return home and sleep() in his async call.

@_@ sleep is for the weak !!!
( jk , I'm sorry Morpheus )

Now, he wouldn't bring the milk back because his wife never gave the move() call to bring the milk back.
while (programmer.isOutside()) {
    Item milk = Economy.Items().buy(ItemClass.MILK);
    milk.moveTo(Location.HOME);
}
would terminate and run exactly what the wife intended.

Yup . . . And she shouldn't use "while" . Simple , one-time if statement would be enough

you don't even need a conditional. Add it to the outside call list that is used for plugins.
programmer.getToDo(Activity.OUTSIDE).add(() ->
    Item milk = Economy.getItems().buy(ItemClass.MILK);
    milk.bringTo(Location.HOME);
)

7:42 PM
def buy_milk( amount , has_money, programmer_outside  )
    if programmer_outside and has_money :
       if store.has_milk() :
           return store.purchase(milk,amount)
Here's pythonic idea for ya

When programmer runs through all items on his ToDo for outside, he'll run all functions on his ToDo. And get milk.
Yeah, but then you need to add buy_milk to the programmer's ToDo list as well.

Of course, duh !

Second, if it's being called, the programmer is already outside, as it's on his ToDo list. Third, you don't need to pass has_money because it can be accessed from the instance of programmer.

to_do.append(buy_milk)

Money is an attribute of programmer, therefore it doesn't need to be called.

7:44 PM
Not necessarily. ToDo lists can have items for being done at home. I have those

True, but the instance of ToDo you're adding buy_milk to is the outside todo list.

Hmmm, probably should have done self.has_money

There's no reason to do that.

Not necessarily, lists can be mixed

If the programmer has 1 money, then he can't buy milk.

7:46 PM
Well, if we're going to have it inside programmer class , then we need self . . . if we're talking python that is

You should get the programmer's money amount, and make sure it's equal or greater to the cost of the milk before executing it.

That's a valid point

Otherwise, you're wasting a lot of exec cycles.
i mean, it's not the Python way of doing things, but it prevents waste.
o/ @RPiAwesomeness

def buy_milk( amount , has_money, programmer_outside  )
    if programmer_outside and has_money :
       if store.has_milk() and store.milk.price() <= self.money :
           return store.purchase(milk,amount)

you don't need has_money anymore.

7:49 PM
why ?

Because you're already checking if he has enough money for the milk.
Also, programmer_outside is unnecessary. Just check that his location isn't home (self.location).

hmmm, good point

also you have another problem. you're getting the price for 1 item of milk. But you can buy multiple.

def buy_milk( amount , has_money, programmer_outside  ):
    if self.location is store :
       if store.has_milk() and store.milk.price()*amount <= self.money :
           return store.purchase(milk,amount)
: are python's ;

def buyMilk(amount):
    if (store.get_inventory(milk) >= amount) and (store.milk.price() * amount <= self.money):
        milk = store.purchase(milk,amount)
        return milk
(and yeah, you add the location checks)

7:53 PM
what's up with the mixed case

but you're defining a routine. Therefore, you shouldn't add any location checks, because this should only be called if programmer is in the store.
#JavaMasterRace

You don't wanna call buyMilk at electronics shop, do you ?
hence, we do need to check location

You check location before calling the function.
Especially if we're adding it to a location-controlled ToDo list

Told you, ToDo lists can be mixed
