12:00 AM
was it easy to read? like, did they look like command-line requests (like HTTP) or some random values you had to figure out by trial and error?
everytime I see some reverse enginnering to get something done, it sounds like a really hard task

12:17 AM
it wasn't easy no
lots of request codes :p

never tried to learn python, but sounds like an interesting script language to learn

i learned a bit a long time ago when I was interested in IRC bots
i've gotten better heh

actually, I need to review lots of things on programming, I've been a bit away from it for a while, lots of things to remember

I'm a sysadmin / security guy by trade

always enjoyed it, but on college I couldn't practice much

12:24 AM
and training.
... and education lol

you work with system security?

network security for the most part
and server level security

nice, so you probably knows a lot about network protocols

i know some

I tried reading a book about TCP/IP, but it was quite dense

12:26 AM
well, there's knowing about the stack, and knowing generally TCP/IP and moreso what protocols do what, how security should be done, best practices etc.

I got a bit confused with the network layers too
but I'll get back to it in some time
by the way
what do you think is a good chronological learning for me to get a solid linux and networks understanding? @ThomasW.
Like, I'm studying the bash right now, about to finish a book, I learned a lot of new things about how the system operates (not so deeply though) and a better understanding of command line
I'm curious, so I end up looking for things that are out of the scope of what I'm learning, but I was thinking what I could read after finishing this bash book

Anonymous
@IanC Have you see the man7 project? It has a TON of man pages online, and is even color-coded within each

@IanC couldn't begin to guide you properly
most of what I learned was thoruh college courses and on the job learning

12:44 AM
@onebree, I haven't, but I'll look for it now! Might sound silly, but reading man pages on bash can be tiring sometimes, guess I'd rather read them in a better looking page haha
@ThomasW., before starting chemistry eng, I thought about making computer science. I'm not sure if I'd start a whole graduation again now though

chemistry eng?

chemical enginering

nice, me too
didn't expect to see another one of my kind here

o/
haha
that was a high five
I'm getting my degree next month

o/

12:49 AM
I'm not working in the area though
where are you from @edwinksl?

oh
what are you going to do
originally or currently?

both

singapore
now studying in the US

I'm not sure, I'm a little deluded with the industry, and college education in a general sense

So my buddy was having issues with Windows 10 and he tried to recover it via Windows 7 , or reinstall Windows 7. Couldn't have it working. As soon as I show up, it started working. #SergMagic

12:52 AM
I've seem lots of unprepared people getting the same degree, people that weren't really interested in the area itself, but in the wage that comes with it

@IanC that is the same case for most degrees, nothing surprising

that's true, which is kind of sad

@Serg but does your presence solve the problem of broken fence
@IanC cheme is a reasonably versatile degree, you can do quite a lot of things

yeah, I was thinking either try some state job more related to my area (I'm currently employed by the state, but to do ship mooring work)
it pays my bills and lets me surf quite often, so its cool for now haha

@edwinksl I can fix many things , but I cannot fix stupid. That dog is stupid , so no - I can't fix the fence issue. Hopefully the presence of an officer with badge and uniform will help that

12:55 AM
@Serg you can't fix stupid? i am disappointed

:D Linus Torvalds probably can , just look at his rants for networking team

i don't think i want to submit a patch to the linux kernel ever

nicely written multiline comment +1

hahaha

12:59 AM
:D I can haz kernel patchez ?
I mean, I would love that one day my code be added to Linux kernel. But I am too n00b right now to get down to the kernel level
Also . . . . Google queries are weird. Like, what is this stupidity : "never put a sock in a toaster " ?

you mean you never did that?

Nope . . . I like my socks soft, not crispy-toasted

\o

I once electrically chocked myself with an oven and a bread

1:02 AM
@serg don't give up - I've written a kernel module before. If I can do it, you can do it.

but nathan is god among men

Nope.

I won't give up. I know everything takes time. One day, perhaps, one day.

echo 'Welcome to the improved Kernel'
where do I submit it?

BTW, I really don't like the new fonts on GitHub.

1:04 AM
I mean, I used to be like "JacobVlijm writes such awesome python code, I'm never gonna be able to catch up to him " , and now lo-and-behold - I help him fix up his answers and write my own python code and shiz
O_o what the duck ?

Nice! It's nice to realize how much we are learning
wtf hahaha

> "No changes. Just bump the version in an attempt to get the npm index page to update."
Even Mozilla has trouble getting things to work.

"How To Write A Shell Script
To successfully create and run a shell script, we need to do three things:
1. Write a script."

2. test the script
3. watch the script fail
4. start over.
5. panic.
6. cry

lol
that seems about right

Pretty much
Mostly that's the right one.
Left one occurs rarely
Also, holly shiz , that dog is using HP Compaq , which i have on my desk right meow
Also, that keyboard tho

I'm mostly more clueless than that dog

How to write a shell script:

1. Write script.
2. Doesn't work? Add quotes.
3. Try again.
4. Doesn't work? Remove quotes.
5. Goto 2.

1:19 AM
kek , word splitting is awesome, right ?

:P

you love to remove messages don't you

@NathanOsman 6. After fifty iterations, give up and appeal to the Gods for assistance.
@Serg DELETE ALL THE THINGS! meh, sometimes i delete my messages.

GUAUP - Give Up And Use Perl

I remember one time a long time ago we had a constant chain of deleted messages for about 50 messages straight
then a mod showed up and was like "what the heck stop"

1:21 AM
I can even imagine myself verbally speaking that acronym :P

Since I only know bash and python, i can't use perl yet

GUAUPy - Give Up and Use Python

Only learn Perl if you have a really, really compelling reason to. (If you're not sure, the answer is "no".)
@ThomasW. That's too sensible.

And what would be the compelling reason ?

lotta talking here

1:23 AM
@Zacharee1 join in

@Zacharee1 yes, it's uncommon isn't it :)

@Serg Do you know how I can view network IO sorted by SSID?

you're free to join in :)

ack

Or anybody for that matter.

1:23 AM
@Zacharee1 syn+ack

ack^2

@AndroidDev em , you mean view network traffic ?

@Serg Insanity... or being held at gunpoint.

That's . . . a compelling reason O_O

@Serg For example, get a list that says I've used xMB on SSID1, and xKB on SSID2.

1:24 AM
I can't think of any other reason to use Perl.

Oh . . . . kind of like network usage on Android . . . em, no I don't know that . . . .

@NathanOsman what if you're an oyster?

lol

@NathanOsman well what about text processing ? wasn't it Perl's original purpose ?

@Zacharee1 "pearl" != "perl"... well, unless you're using PHP or something.

1:26 AM
@Serg python has surpassed

@Serg Yes, but that was because Regular Expressions were popularized by Perl.

3 mins ago, by Nathan Osman
@ThomasW. That's too sensible.

All the big languages have them now.

hypocrite

@Serg :(

1:26 AM
@NathanOsman Heheh, indeed, but it's actually happening quite often nowadays from what I've seen

@ThomasW. Would you know how?

Yeah, Python is a great language.
It gets the job done without making you pull your hair out.

@ThomasW. moderation does that

no, hanging out with groups of system administrators at IT conventions does that :P
2

ew

1:27 AM
@AndroidDev know how to... what?

OK I need to sleep

@Zacharee1 go get sleep. :P
enjoy your night.

5 mins ago, by Android Dev
@Serg Do you know how I can view network IO sorted by SSID?

If one wants to get hired, one should learn Java . . . .then give up because there's nothing for n00b level , and learn javascript

@AndroidDev off the top of my head, no.

1:29 AM
@Serg Everyone is advertising Ruby and senior C++ positions where I am.
I do neither of those things.

Completely different subject: Can Apache and OwnCloud coexist peacefully?

@AndroidDev I would imagine so.
ownCloud is PHP-based, right?

I actually do want to learn Ruby. Was my original plan for the summer

@James is your man, then.
@AndroidDev That should work.

@NathanOsman Think I should test in a VM first?

1:31 AM
@AndroidDev Would you be open to trying out Docker?

^ that

@NathanOsman Never heard of it.

Docker is like virtualization on steroids.
2
Instead of virtualizing an entire machine, Docker uses kernel cgroups and chroots to isolate the processes you want to run.

@NathanOsman Reading the "What is docker?" page

Each service is provided as a "container" which can be instantly downloaded and run.
You can create containers and destroy them in seconds.
It's incredibly fast and secure.

1:33 AM
well, pulling containers from the docker hub takes a while . . . on raspberry that is

I have multiple websites powered by Docker, so I can personally attest to its reliability.

@NathanOsman And I can integrate it into an Ubuntu Server?

@AndroidDev If it's an amd64 server, yes.
(Docker doesn't run on i386.)

most docker containers are for 64 bit os , veeeery few are form arm

Q: Cannot SSH into WD my book

SamsquatchThe only two users on my NAS that I can SSH to are the defaults 'root' and 'admin'. Answers that I've come across so far are like this, where I set things in /etc/ssh/sshd_config like AllowUser userName PermitEmptyPasswords yes However there is no directory /etc/ssh/ but I found the file ssh...

1:35 AM
@NathanOsman Hmmmm.
I'll have to look into this.
Thanks for the tip.

uname -p
^--- that will tell you what you have

@NathanOsman Yeah, my server is x64.

Sweet, then you can install and run Docker on it.

@NathanOsman - Have you ever tried Let's Encrypt?

Yes.
I'm using it here: nitroshare.net

1:36 AM
@NathanOsman Any good?

Renewing every 60 days is a bit of a nuisance but if I wasn't so lazy, I would automate it :D
The certificates themselves work fine.

Common Name (CN)	nitroshare.net
Organization (O)	<Not Part Of Certificate>
Organizational Unit (OU)	<Not Part Of Certificate>
Issued By

Common Name (CN)	Let's Encrypt Authority X3
Organization (O)	Let's Encrypt
Organizational Unit (OU)	<Not Part Of Certificate>
good stuff

It sure beats the $120+ I paid Comodo for a wildcard cert.

@NathanOsman How should I install it without breaking Apache?

not to mention them trying to hijack letsencrypt

1:38 AM
AFK, supper time. (Grilled burgers!)
@AndroidDev I can help you later maybe.
Not until around this time.

le me be tryin' to share laptop interwebs with me raspberry

wut

@Serg - do you use Docker?

@NathanOsman Okay. Enjoy the burgers!

Or at least, are you familiar enough to help @AndroidDev?

1:40 AM
@NathanOsman on a n00b level, yes. The best I got is running minecraft server on my raspberry via docker

@NathanOsman Really nice of you guys to offer assistance. Let me see what I can do. I have to go now anyway :)

Yay, my berry be sharing interwebs with laptop

1:57 AM
Hi! I'm trying to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10. I have created an Ubuntu USB drive, but when I reboot the machine no menu appears; I can't load Ubuntu from the USB drive.

@AndroidDev Actually, I have owncloud on my raspberry. Installed it on raspberry via "docker pull kickinz1/owncloud-8.0.2-sqlite3-armhf" command. I tried going to my raspberry's ip , port 80 , then it asks for creating admin account. Fairly easy setup ( cc @NathanOsman for supervision )
@Færd you need to insert USB, start the machine, and press either F8 or F12 so that it allows you to choose what to boot. Choose USB. Then you will go into installer
Or just avoid doing that and use Virtualbox from inside Win10

I'll try that. Thank you.

you're very welcome

2:14 AM
@Serg Just tried F8 and F12 separately. Neither worked.
Does Virtualbox help me to install Ubuntu permanently, or does it just make it possible to try it inside Windows 10?

@Færd it helps you tryit inside Win10. Basically it's like running OS, but without installing it to hard drive. You can delete it as if it was a file at any time
keep in mind, virtual machines can be slow. I would recommend you use Ubuntu Gnome or Lubuntu instead of default Ubuntu

Hmm. It's a bit heavy for me (> 100 MB) to download. (Yes, that's how limited and slow my connection is;) I guess I better search for some guides on how to boot from USB. It shouldn't be that hard.

Win10 may be problematic , you might try disabling secure boot, try going into UEFI and change setting there. Older windowsers were easier to deal with. Newer ones can be pain in the lower body

2:50 AM
Ugh it is.

I'm probably going to make a function for making .desktop files. Copying old ones and editing them has become annoying

cool :)

@Serg has been done, and you basically only need 4 lines.

:O

My disk has 176 bad sectors. F me.

@JacobVlijm I know it has been done. I've done it too. Lately I just been making a lot of those .desktop files, so it is a bit annoying to do it by hand ( which is how i mostly create them) .
Where has @TheBrownOne disappeared ?
@NathanOsman ownCloud question. What can I do with it at home ? ( I have it on raspberry , docker image ). Just need ideas for what can be done with it. Can it be used as backup server for my lappy ?

Q: Script for automatic gateway switching

sysadmincrispyI have two network connections. If one goes down other should come up automatically how i can do it with a shell script in Ubuntu 12.04

@Serg she deleted her account...

Why?!?

@JacobVlijm :(

Oh . . . well that's not fun . Besiders she should keep it for her resume

@JacobVlijm I wasn't aware of that

6:53 AM
what i don't get is why she deleted her account

@JourneymanGeek yeah, it is sad, There was a message here somewhere

let me find that

...she sent one of us a mail about it. Don't remember who it was.

that reminds me when i nearly removed my account
let me check my OUCH my HOT PENCILRUBBER mail

@JacobVlijm ahh, that's precisely why I didn't ask why. Typically when people quit like that, I figure they want their privacy

6:58 AM
she disappeared without a trace...

@JourneymanGeek she mentioned that she had to make choices about what is important in her live. I will try to find the post...

@JourneymanGeek actually on a daily base :)

And probably I should stop talking about this , or I'll start spilling out about my ex again. I guess I am not entirely over her

It took me what . . . 4 years to realize I wasn't learning that much in university ? So yeah, time was wasted, but yeah, when time was right I was like "WTF , I learned more in two years of using Ubuntu than in 4 years of college life, and it's been 6 already"

As you all may have noticed already, my Stack Exchange network accounts have all been deleted. I recently came to a decision about some things in my life, and I'm turning in some new directions. I enjoyed my time around the network, and I did make a few friends here. However, I won't be around on the network anymore as I have decided to move on and focus in on what I have discovered truly matters. Those of you who know me and have a higher chance of me responding can still email me at my personal domain email address. I'll reply every now and then, but don't expect quick replies. I will als

@Serg what's the 1st rule of migrations?
3

@terdon you don't talk about migrations ?

:)
No, you don't migrate crap

Oh . . . .we're in not fight club anymore ?
@terdon also , i've question regarding this : unix.stackexchange.com/a/295787/85039 Solution was close, but doesn't work properly. Timestamp remains the same at the moment of pipe being opened. I couldn't fit explanation into one comment so had to post as an answer. Should I still post a comment or just keep my post ?

7:58 AM
@Serg In a Bash script, how can I check whether the script got executed within the last 5 seconds already?
You have an idea?
I'll probably have to touch a /tmp file and check its time stamp?
