@Sinoosh The expand command does not convert one TAB character to N spaces, but it converts each TAB character to the amount of spaces needed to align it to the next column of width N. (with N being the argument to -t)
And of course that's at least one space.
Strange spam mail in my inbox - what do people think how stupid or naive I am?

@ByteCommander please see these outputs
$ expand -t 1 file |cat
i a
$ expand -t 2 file |cat
i a
$ expand -t 5 file |cat

Spam mails are entertaining...
@Sinoosh You need to format your chat messages as fixed-width, otherwise multiple spaces get collapsed into one.
Or run it like this, to convert spaces to dots: expand -t 3 file | tr ' ' '.' @Sinoosh
Otherwise I can't see what you think is wrong.

@ByteCommander yes.just i wan to say
$ expand -t 5 file |wc -m
7

@OwenHines I'm in London, it's bedtime for me now :)

i have 4 spaces between i and a

9:08 PM
Those are also quite entertaining.

@ByteCommander $expand file |wc -m
10
i have seven spaces not 8

@Sinoosh Please use this to show us how many spaces you got: expand -t 3 file | tr ' ' '.'
Or expand -t 3 file | sed 'y/ /./' or something like this.

@ByteCommander $ expand -t 3 file | tr ' ' '.'
i..a

Yup, that's correct. Just what it is expected to do.
-t 3 means that columns in this document are 3 characters wide.

CVs down to 65 o_O

9:11 PM
That means the first column contains characters 1-3, second column characters 4-6 and so on.

What expand does is to convert each TAB character into spaces, so that the next character starts in the next column.
I'll give you an example for -t 4:

> "Hello, Peace be with you, I'm Rev father Johnpaul, I came in contact with you on Facebook, I'm pleading you to write me back immediately after reading my mail, I'm please to let you know about the proposal i have for you, kindly write back through this email, I am waiting for your urgent response soonest. God bless you. Thanks."
A former pope (who died) is contacting me...

oops
I reached my daily CV limit :p

@Sinoosh I planned to do that once, but I didn't get myself one yet.

@ByteCommander i read many of them but i love "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". Zarathustra is my hometown:)

are we witnessing the next videonauth/zanna

I honestly don't know THAT much about Ubuntu, but I try to help out where I can.
lol @edwinksl

@edwinksl dun dun dun

@NathanOsman Thanks for sharing, that guy is amazing! xD

@ByteCommander IKR?

9:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda I'd ask which bug you're working on but eh. I got disconnected earlier sorry.

@Zacharee1 will you get to 20k before zanna does

@edwinksl usofuni

@edwinksl probably, I am very slow these days :)

@Zacharee1 danke

10:16 PM

@Zacharee1 why would someone do that
:(

It was an iCloud locked phone with an already cracked screen
but yes, THE PAIN

good evening!

@Zacharee1 "How to write on your iPhone"

lol

fun? v(^_^)v

waste
rest in peace iphone 6

the iPhone itself is a waste IMO

Even with jailbreak?

Reopen case here if a few more could check it out: askubuntu.com/q/803365/57576
Comments hold the case for reopen

10:36 PM
That reminds me I need to root my phone

even with jailbreak, there's still less customization available than on Android without root

I'm a bit confused about android OSs though

@andrew.46 already voted
@IanC it's Linux with a VM for apps

@Zacharee1, I make my own tweaks for my iPhone

@OwenHines o_O

10:37 PM
@Zacharee1 Thanks and good morning :)

@Zacharee1 I knew it was linux because I tried some terminal emulator, and checked the filesystems, but I was confused because looking the android developers guide it seemed like the apps were built for java?

@Zacharee1, just some modified objective-c

While we're talking about destroying things, here's a way to wipe your old CD-ROMs:

@IanC like I said, it's Linux with a Java VM for apps
ART
or is it Dalvik now?
christ

I think I'm using Dalvik, whatever that is :p

10:39 PM
@ByteCommander That looks totally safe.

doesn't running the apps on a java VM makes everything really slower?

> In its simplest terms, Dalvik is a virtual machine that runs applications and code written in Java.

@IanC Dalvik was discontinued.

so it is ART now

Indeed.

10:40 PM
@NathanOsman there's an option on my phone to change between them though, for some reason I can't remember I once changed back to Dalvik

@IanC I think it's similar to how Minecraft runs in a Java VM

it was on the developer menu

@IanC so you're on KitKat or LP?

@IanC On Android 5.0+?
I'm pretty sure they were only both available on Android 4.4.

my android isn't updated, been postponing it for a looong time
I'm on android 4.4.4
under Dalvik (just checked)

10:41 PM
Oh! That would explain it then :P
Yeah, Dalvik was still the default back then.

any mods you suggest? Clockwork?

@IanC Which phone?

@andrew.46 Your answer is wrong (okay, not totally wrong, but not totally correct either). Always watch your quoting in Bash!

a first generation MotoG (Xt1032 I think)

10:42 PM
whoa

And no, I don't agree to reopen the Q.

@IanC Is there a build of Cyanogen for that phone?

I believe so, have seem that name while looking for mods for it

You'll get a lot of use out of that.
It adds a ton of extra settings and stuff.

10:44 PM
And don't forget Android M

@ByteCommander should be "*.iso" ?

Noooooo!
Single quotes.
As I said in my comment...

D'oh!

cool, I'll try it out, need to fix my headphone plug first, just bought the piece, then unlock bootloader and go on
@Zacharee1 what's android M?

Double quotes don't prevent globbing.

10:45 PM
Marshmallow
6.0.1

@Zacharee1 OT?

wat

@Zacharee1 What does that mean?

@ByteCommander Thanks, fixed now :)

off topic

10:46 PM
@Zacharee1 Oh right

and comment removed :)

forgot :P
You guys think I can get to 1k this weekend?

O_O
The Pixel XL would cost me nearly $1200 CAD.

thas a lot of money

I most definitely do not regret my OP3.

10:57 PM
I seem to remember tweeting about this?

@OwenHines Your rise is meteoric :)

am i a meteor now

@Seth I have a short memory... :D

didn't listen to the first album, but this first song is awesome
for the ones that are into psychodelic rock

I have no flags left :(
but theres a guy talking about Linux Mint

11:06 PM
Cyanogen MOD page on the MotoG forum says " ==> /! do NOT attempts to install C-apps(yet) /! <==" :/ @NathanOsman

Bad things happen to the best of us

that's on cyanogen mod 13, maybe older stable versions support C apps?

@IanC Do you really need the Cyanogen Apps though?
@NathanOsman The Pixels are as overpriced as the iPhones

Possibly even worse.

agreed
I mean, great, unlimited photo storage, Google Assistant, Pixel Launcher, coolio
But those phones are $500 phones at most
and somehow the 128GB XL is out of stock
$870 for 128GB XL?!?!?!?!?
That's more than the V20/Note7!
wtf Google
the V20 may not have water resistance, but it has a military durability rating
the Pixel has neither
Wat r u doin gugel

11:22 PM
@Zacharee1 I don't think so

G apps will work fine

I just realized I completely misunderstood the statement

I thought you might've

I thought he mean't that you can't compile C programs on Cyanogen MOD, C-apps is actually apps made for Cyanogen and G-apps the regular play store google apps?
man, I really know sh** about android hahaha

lol

11:27 PM
I wish I understood it a little better, but when I think about maybe programming for android to learn it I run into those crazy android-dev packages, with IDEs that do half the work for you and think if I'll actually learn about android by using it..
you know where I could start? @Zacharee1?

developing apps? um
I just play around with Android
But I would start with installing CM13 (or waiting for 14 to be built for your phone)
then you have a modern and unlocked dev environment

cool, all that fancy android-dev stuff is because the program must be compiled to work with the Java VM environment right?

probably

when you have CM13 can you program for android in a more simplistic way?

well you don't have to get around any manufacturer stupidity
but maybe you should consider buying a new cheap phone?

11:34 PM
phones are a bit expensive in my country (actually, electronics in general are, computers, phones..)
can't really afford a newer one right now :/
what would be your suggestion for a new phone though?

Something cheap. Honor 8 is $400. BLU Pure XR is $300 (USD)

@IanC I think CM13 is still Android at the core - meaning you don't get more simplistic

@ThomasWard well it's more simplistic than Moto's stuff

@IanC Also, yes, Java VM / Dalvik / Gradle all relies on Java
@Zacharee1 That wasn't the original question
4 mins ago, by IanC
when you have CM13 can you program for android in a more simplistic way?
"can you program for android in a more simplistic way?" was the question

@ThomasWard well it's a grammar fault to not have anything to compare to
I inferred "more simplistic way than Moto"

11:37 PM
man, I wish I earned in dollars :p

@Zacharee1 Interpretation of that, to me, is "Compared to stock Android images", which is the basis of my reply.

@ThomasWard and mine the other :p

(I'm in an android programming course right now, and CM13 or not Android programming is still Android programming, no more complex, no more simplistic.)

@IanC the Axon 7 is BRL 1350 which is about $420

blurgh all my tools are missing

11:38 PM
@ThomasWard well testing is part of that process and that can be a pain on a locked down device/OS

I think that with Android that's less of a concern
the core issue there is whether you want root or not
but this is a discussion better suited for an Android room
and i need to fix this computer

@ThomasWard lemme introduce you to TouchWiz or Kindle....

@Zacharee1 Kindle isn't Android. It's a proprietary rolled up OS based on Android, but not really considered from what I've heard/seen in the same category. (Kind of like how eOS is based on Ubuntu but not considered Ubuntu)
it permits loading of Android apps, but you have to download them to a computer and then add them in, so while based on Android the many 'android' features many people like in the tablets of, say, Samsung's Galaxy line, are nonexistent or proprietary

that's a good analogy
but I'm pretty sure it being Android is more of a licensing thing
Yeah it's licensing
any AOSP thing isn't really "Android"
Which is really "Google Android"
in order for something to market as Android, it needs to include Google Play Services
Otherwise, it's AOSP or a chosen name
So I think the analogy might be more similar to Ubuntu and a distro that comes packaged with Budgie

11:59 PM
FINALLY
Chat hasn't been loading
and it's still messed up
