Can I add a feature request?

@NathanOsman sure
libnotify:ERROR:notification.c:568:notify_notification_show: code should not be reached
Hmmm . . .
That's one of those great moments when i can only think one thing
le wut ?

@Serg Could the percentage show the amount of space?
Like: "25.4% (12.4 GB)"

@NathanOsman yup, can be done

@edwinksl The hockey stick occurred because I was involved in the Ubuntu Forums for a looonng time with very small involvement in AU. Reversed now :)

Can a rep fix this chat error. The error message is highlighted in red.

@L.D.James um, wat?

hellu

The error I'm asking a moderator for assistance with is highlighted in red in the image. It gives this error when I click on the automatically moved to chat link.

12:45 AM
@L.D.James do me a favor and refresh the page and see if after that you can create the room.
if not, let me know and I'll take a stick and force it

Ok.

if i'm still here that is
otherwise, flag for help.

The link is no longer there on the page refresh.

can you link to the question directly
screenshots of the error are nice, but getting to questions, they're not so helpful.

A: Can I run Ubuntu on this setup?

L. D. JamesThat's substantially more than enough. It's better to have more than less. 12:49 AM
I'm right here

also if you want to talk to @Zacharee1 unless you need a specific chat room just chat here :P

Yes, but the messages are not.

@L.D.James so? I can see them

I don't see them on this screen.

that's why we have tabs :p

12:50 AM
@L.D.James picky are we

Don't bother with it @L.D.James.
The conversation seems to have reached its end anyways.

I believe it's productive to have the link associated with the comments. This way others can benefit.
I'm not picky. I thought this was part of the procedure for providing answers and resources for the community.

I see no reason to further the discussion, and it's rather off topic for the answer at hand, and it should probably be deleted instead of preserved in a chat log. Just my 2c

I understand what you are saying. I don't have a problem with it. I just didn't want to ignore comments made to me. It was my intention to give the dignity of a response.

Well I honestly don't see what else there is to say
if you wanna respond, respond in a comment
unless you have an idea for a related discussion, there's no reason for a new chat if you're only posting one message

12:54 AM
I didn't see a lot to be said. The pertinent information is in my answer. I don't migh clarifying any points of my answer. I didn't initiate the questions about my answer. I just tried to give a respectful response.

Well there you go. That warning is automated. It doesn't need to be followed, especially if you just want to get one last word in

But I understand and don't have a problem with @Zacharee1 specifying that he wasn't looking for, or concerned with a response to his comments.
I understand the warning. I believe it's a good component of AU. Whether people respect the purpose of it, I understand it's up to the individual. I just happen to think it's a good feature and I respect it in my communications. I hope the Question and answer part can be to the point. I think it's great to have extending discussions away from the question, and a review or summary added to the question or answer.

what was the command to check the diff between unstaged modifications and last commit on git?
seems like git diff did it lol
thought you needed some options

@IanC git diff -pls

@ThomasWard Thanks, Thomas!

1:08 AM
@Zacharee1 what is the -pls for?

Hello everyone :)

hello @SeverusTux!

@IanC pls == please

LOL
I thought it was some options, ironically I found a -p and a -l option on git diff man page
didn't look further for the s :p

lol
PSA: Don't run a Kali LiveUSB or install Kali Tools on Ubuntu!
Just use Kali instead!

1:13 AM
@Serg Hi :) . I think it contains too much info.which makes it too big and cluttery. You could remove "FileSystem" Field . Which I think is not important .

@SeverusTux actually has a point there :p
what if you could make it open a modal or something with more detail?

@SeverusTux @Zacharee1 I'll make it configurable eventually , users will be able to check which fields they want to see

kk

That would be perfect

Q: Narrow down Favorites with filters feature request

WinEunuuchs2UnixI don't know if this is a new feature-request or it's already available. Every day I flag questions with the favorite button and I'm collecting too many to effectively review them. For example, today I flagged 2 more Nvidia problems in Ubuntu 16.04 as favorites. What if one day I have a Matrix M...

@Terrance hi :) . I use Arch Linux. And I am trying to connect between 2-Arch Linux and 1 Ubuntu. I am trying to do this because of my project work. We team members want to discuss and code.

CV 3KERS

My function which worked in shell just now , doesn't work in script
dafuq

can you post it?

@IanC i think it got it
$ cat convert.py
def get_human_readable(size):
     prefix = ['B','KiB','MiB','GiB',
               'TiB','PiB','EiB',
               'ZiB','YiB'
     ]
     counter = 0
     while int(size/1024) > 0:
           counter = counter + 1
           size = int(size/1024)
           print(size)

     return (size,prefix[counter])

print(get_human_readable(71352999936))

1:33 AM
serg is gonna shc his script when he's done so that nobody can alter it.
or copy it, or see the source

Ahhhh good morning

@Serg do you actually expect to get past TiB?

it's not working @Serg? I don't know much python, but it seems to be right to me

@IanC that kernel?
working?

not quite yet :p

1:42 AM
@SeverusTux Hey! How are you trying to connect the 3 systems together?

I postponed it a little bit, since I noticed the configuration I wanted on the kernel was already on the one compiled already
but I'm still going to finish it, once I get a little extra time, can't be defeated by a kernel panic

@Terrance I haven't tried. But I know one of my friend does that. Using teamviewer.

@SeverusTux Yeah, that one works. If you have a spare system, Openfire is a great chat server that I use and set up for my team at work.
It supports XMPP with drag and drop file sharing, etc.

thanks :) I will check it out.

:)
I use pidgin as the chat client, but you can use any one that support XMPP

2:13 AM
@IanC No, that's the working version

oh right, what was the problem?

@Zacharee1 well . . .I gotta plan for the future. Who could have thunk couple years ago we will use Terabyte drives
@IanC it was infinitely looping , because i needed to cast the size/1024 as int
OOooooooh
Shell is python2

was size a float?

I still have a 486 with about 300 MB total storage. Back then that was a lot.

division is int automatically

2:15 AM
at least in C, the result is usually defined by either a cast or the operands types

It's the same in Python.
(float)somevar / 12

if size is an int, since 1024 is an int too the result should be an int

Or this works too:
somevar / 12.0

of course casting is good practice, to make it more explicit for someone reading it
I probably should learn python, I just don't know if I'd have the patience to learn all the modules
and review OOP :p

Of course, in C++, we have the cast operators:
static_cast<float>(2) / 8

2:19 AM
I didn't know about those
what's the advantage of using those instead of (float)(2)/8?

Because then you can search for them.
If you just search for (float) you will also match function declarations with a single parameter.
Also, static_cast<> is type-safe. It will not let you cast anything to anything.

got it

 int bad = 0;
 static_cast<int*>(bad);
^--- that generates a compiler error
int bad = 0;
(int*)bad;
^--- that won't (in C)

resulting in a overflow, nice
so they are different after all, thought it was sort of an alias :p
man, I need to work on some variable naming schemes, I always end up with some unnecessarily big variable/types names
what do you guys use as a rule?

Don't worry about that, it's when you have small names that you have to worry.
"int a;" vs. "int radiusInMeters;"

2:30 AM
I usually try to use:
<program-identifier>_<variable-identifier>

but <variable-identifier> ends up being large too
like, some header is about math functions, from a program called AUCalculator
I do something like
AC_Math_thenameofthetype_struct
I'm not sure if it's helping the code being organized or doing the opposite haha

Oh, are we naming structs or variables?
There's no need to prefix variable names with anything since they should already be as local as possible.

both, I usually use those name rules on both structs, functions and variables

when i do python, i name things pluginFolderPath and the like

maybe I've smallvariablenamephobia
I end up with big names thinking "oooh, but if my code gets big and I end up with some conflicting variables names?"
it has never happened, and probably wouldn't even if I picked some smaller names
but I like to at least, have the program initials as a prefix
I end up relying on structs, since I feel more free to use smaller names on the fields
That's an example of what I end up doing, but on this case I'm actually satisfied with the naming

3:06 AM
well, time to get ready for work
good night!

1 hour later…
4:34 AM
My Chinese teacher friend said she likes to drive her car, and 5 minutes later hit mine because i think she set it into neutral gear. Oh the irony

and this is why i'll be modding the hell out of my car.
just so anyone who goes into it goes "wtf i can't do this" and leaves.

@KazWolfe in that case, invest extra into security, because if bad boys see you got mods, ergo you have money, ergo they'll try to steal shiz

@Serg i wish them luck lol

Kaz booby traps his cars

@Seth no i'll just be turning them into airplanes

4:40 AM
a la larry boy?

a la one of those to do most of the things
like i said. bad boys step 1: get in
bad boys step 2: figure out how to turn things on
bad boys step 3: figure out how to remove things
bad boys step 4: realize everything is worthless without being in my specific car.
All friends: "Hey Kaz, how the hell do you start your car?"

@KazWolfe That looks like the flight computer from a Boeing aircraft.

Me: "Oh, it's easy. Simply press and hold INIT for three seconds. It'll display a confirmation and ask for the NFC tag on the keychain. Scan it in over the display, and then it will show "Ready..." Then you can turn the key.
@NathanOsman yeah basically.
i want to see how many RPis I can fit in a single sedan.

Wut.

@NathanOsman I'd say the indicator comes close to 2.0v , I'm pretty much meeting all the goals. I'll try to add preferences dialog this week and I think it's a good point to release it. What's your schedule like ? can PPA be set next weekend ? ( like Saturday 15th )

I can do that right now if you'll help me.

@NathanOsman sure, how can i help ?

Oh, you already set up a team.

@NathanOsman actually , wait please
Lets do it next week
I'll need to edit readme and tag everything

5:20 AM
Okay.
I only got as far as creating the PPA.

@NathanOsman you already have admin privilleges in the team, so it's pretty much all set. Also, I pull source into , my project on Launchpad, so if that's any easier, i can give you link to that as well

No, I have to import the branch into Launchpad a special way or it won't link to GitHub properly.

Alright

When done properly, the branch on Launchpad will automatically pull code from GitHub and rebuild the packages in the PPA.

This is ROFL'able

@Serg I found out German is like English like Polish is like Russian

That's to be expected from a language that has Roman roots , but their grammar is far more complex

can we get an askubuntu badge like that?
@Danatela Da.

5:45 AM
@KazWolfe and award it to WolfBot

@Serg Ye olde Latin.

@Serg Da.

Can George have one too.
He is also totally not a robot.

@NathanOsman Da.

@NathanOsman Ya, dast ist gut

@NathanOsman yep and Latin occured simple enough too

Let's find out how Travis-CI likes git push -f...

uh-oh, somebody's repository is about to get funked

Heh - it worked fine.

most annoying thing ever: non-tech people saying "<thing> is a bug" when said bug is technically impossible.

@Serg Never do that on master, but it's okay on other branches.

5:55 AM
no, it is completely impossible for my program to have a bug where "a" is replaced with "n"

about to get another bounty with my 1337 python skillz

@Danatela basically.

Crappy right now because there's no drivers
X11 was around for ages, hence it works. Mir will take ages to be stable too

when will bcmwl be stable

6:20 AM
@Serg yep and will be ancient too when stable
when become stable

what's bcmwl?

@KazWolfe hahaha if not now then never...

@Serg I used nouveau and Gnome 3 to get a normal workplace
if it could be called normal
I'm like in new shoes now

Q: Splitting tag libreoffice into libreoffice-writer and others?

orschiro1,284 questions have been tagged with libreoffice. Is it potentially beneficial to introduce the following tags: libreoffice-writer libreoffice-calc libreoffice-impress

@Serg could you help me?
about tail -f

@Sinoosh sure, what's the question ?

Thanks,but first i should say hello;)

Hello ^_^/

i know i can follow a log file with this command tail -f logfile but when i track a file if i pass text to that file with this command echo "this is new line" >> file
i can see that
but when i open file with editor and put my new line into file not happening

6:52 AM
Hmm, well let me try this first . . .
Hmmm, indeed that doesn't show up
@Sinoosh aha, found it , use -F flag

whats wrong
when i open that file by editor its like the file is removed?

@Sinoosh basically, -f has one condition, file cannot be rewritten. Text editor basically does that, it overwrites file completely, it doesn't append to file
That's why -F is useful
-F reopens file every once in a while
$ tail -F TESTFILE.txt
Line 1
new line
tail: 'TESTFILE.txt' has been replaced; following new file
Line 1
new line
more
^C
See ? It gave me warning that file has been replaced

Wow thanks i got it
i did not know editor overwrites file
Great

\o/ morning all \o/

@serg i searched for relationship between console and shell. everything that i understand about them is:
console=terminal=tty provides a way for the kernel and other processes to send text output to the user, and to receive text input from the user
stdin=keyboard stdout and stderr=display
virtual consoles are the same and they are logically separate and they allow us multiuser login to a OS at the same time .
they are in kernel space! when the boot is complete and we are in login prompt it is console to let us goes from kernel space to user space.and after login shell will run on top of console and take stdin from keyboard and show us the kernel's messages

7:05 AM
@Sinoosh almost correct

@Rinzwind hi Rinz

stdin, stderr, and stdout are basically streams of information

morning @Rinzwind :) how do?

heya Danay :-)
@Zanna +1 on silvers >:)

by default stdin is linked to keyboard, but you can change that

7:06 AM
@Rinzwind good morning

@Rinzwind shiny shiny :D

you could do this : cat < /etc/passwd
This says "hey, cat , your stdin is now text file"
Same with stdout, you can change it

@Serg just i have a question,terminal emulator emulate virtual consoles it means they dont use tty*

Yes, they use something else
they use pty , which is "virtual" device

7:09 AM
but the output of ls /dev/pty* is nothing for me
i am using terminal emulator

@Sinoosh sorry, pts
$ find /dev -iname "*pt*"
/dev/pts
/dev/pts/ptmx
/dev/ptmx
/dev/ecryptfs

A pseudoterminal (sometimes abbreviated "pty") is a pair of virtual
character devices that provide a bidirectional communication channel.
One end of the channel is called the master; the other end is called
the slave.
SO if you are into bondage. PTY is the way to open source it

@Serg yes i have them:)
@Rinzwind hmmm,thanks
have a good day
Bye

you too :)

7:14 AM
@Rinzwind lol

@Rinzwind @Zanna how do you like the progress on my indicator ?
It now has icons, distinguishes between types of drives and filesystems
Also, per feature request, added usage in human-readable form

@Serg looking very nice indeed! excellent work there ^_^

@Serg feature request: make the progress bar into a color (from green to red based in percentage)

Q: Hack wifi with ubuntu

Naveen KumarIs Wifi hack by ubuntu os? If Yes So please tell me how and if no so how to hack wifi I faithfully say you its only for knowledge not for sybr crime

sigh

@Rinzwind will try do achieve that but I doubt indicator's limited API will let me do that :/
@Rinzwind would changing icon to "attention" be appropriate alternative ?

@Rinzwind nice FR!

7:27 AM
@Serg I could also use a colored pen if that's not possible :P

I am neck-deep in C++ templates.

@cl-netbox i'm alright, studying, keep working on my indicator ( see screenshot a few lines up )

@Serg Hey ... great ! :) You are going to become "the" indicator professional of ubuntu ... :)

mornin @cl-netbox :)

@Zanna Hey - good morning to you ! :)

timezone-neutral greetings to everyone I've missed so far...

@cl-netbox probably not, but at least i can make some people happy with my work :)

7:46 AM
@Serg Yes, I really think so ... a lot of (or better most) users really do like indicators ! :)

@Serg most definitely! happy customer here :)

Q: Updated Ubuntu 16.04, now I'm running Kali?

kneekiUpdated Ubuntu 16.04 today using the software updater. Now my PC us running Kali? There were something like 2Gb of updates, which I thought at first was because I haven't updated in awhile. Now I'm thinking that it was downloading Kali. Here's a video of the new boot up process: https://youtu.be...
