7:01 PM
I did a bit of work with PAM.
Let me try to find the source code...
It begins around line 238.
Other than that, I don't know anything about PAM :P

^_^''''''
all i really need is to ban a user after 3 strikes in ssh

@A.B. - maybe @Serg does mean Pamela Anderson's "modules" - got it ? =)

@Serg fail2ban, maybe?

@cl-netbox ^_^

@Serg - am I right ?
@Serg - hello - are you sleeping ? (maybe between Pam's modules) ? =)

7:09 PM
@cl-netbox ha, Pamela Anderson's modules sound tempting, but unfortunately I am only only only into Asian ladies :)

@Serg I have seen some with big ones as well :) - anyway better than boring software, right ? =)

This conversation has really derailed...

ufw/iptables specialists here?

@NathanOsman that's what one of the answers mentions it already, but isn't pam supposed to be working for that ? Like there is /etc/pam.d/sshd , it's just not working :/

I honestly have no idea...

7:18 PM
@cl-netbox Oh, yes. Check out Hitomi Tanaka, Nana Aoyama, Rin Aoki, Rui Akikawa. There are all well endowed ladies :)

user139252
One of my students is trying to convince the others that college is worthless because all a college degree is for is material gain which doesn't matter in the end.

@Serg you nasty nasty boy you - oh oh oh ... =)

user139252
I am disappointed in the next generation.

@HeatherBrown material gain pays bills and sustains your living
therefore college degree sustains your living once you get it

@HeatherBrown o/

7:23 PM
or to be more exact it's one of the methods

hi

@HeatherBrown are you good with ufw/iptables?
@alexus needs some help… and me -_-
@Serg he master of nmcli

@A.B. kinda, not really :)

nmcli is part of redhat not ubuntu or am I wrong?

user139252
IPTables... mostly

7:26 PM
@alexus nope

user139252
UFW... never really used it

ufw is just wrapper
front end
it uses iptables

@alexus network-manager: /usr/bin/nmcli

user139252
Oh. I can do IPTables the old fashioned way.

user139252
What needs done?

7:28 PM
@HeatherBrown do you mind taking a look at pastebin.com/diXtMyRN

@HeatherBrown great

@alexus nmcli is like a command line version of network manager. But in ubuntu prior to 14.04 they had different nmcli than on redhat or fedora. Now as of 15.04 ubuntu is switching to systemd, so they now use same one as on redhat/ffedora

@serg right, i know what nmcli is) just came back from redhat training, one of new things i learned)

@alexus ah. How was the raining ?

@HeatherBrown it looks by default it should deny all incoming connections, but it doesn't look like that's what it's doing...
@Serg mine was like for super duper admins, everyone in my group had 20+ years of Linux hands on experience

7:30 PM
2015 and 20+ years?

people who attended it, start using linux in 1995 and been using it until today 2015

user139252
You want to deny ALL incoming connections?

Ok the first kernel: 17. September 1991

@HeatherBrown according to output that's what it should be doing
root@alexus:~# ufw status verbose | grep ^Default
Default: deny (incoming), allow (outgoing), deny (routed)
root@alexus:~#

user139252
So, how do you know that incoming connections are slipping through?

7:33 PM
'cause whenever I try to connect, it actually connects
i also used nmap and it reports as port being open

@alexus just out of curriosity, what exactly you're trying to do ?

user139252
have you tried just typing sudo iptables -A INPUT -j REJECT?

@Serg, so I have this host running Ubuntu and start running few services, I need to keep them firewalled
so that's the end goal

user139252
The command I said will allow outgoing and currently established connections, but nothing incoming.

@HeatherBrown I'm not looking to reject everything)
I'm looking to disallow from everywhere, except certain IPs
with default behavior it should've already take care of first part, but according to my test that's not the case

7:41 PM
@alexus look into fail2ban . I'm just learning this thingy, but apparently it's like a firewall that bans ips except for certain ones

user139252
sudo iptables -I INPUT -p tcp ! -s XXX.XXX.XXX -j DROP

user139252
That will block all incoming traffic from any IP other than XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX

user139252
All TCP traffic, at least. You could do the same for UDP as well.

Q: What's up with the late answers queue?

kosIt looks like we currently have 4400+ late answers awaiting review: Obviously that's not possible, so what's up with that review queue? Looks like a server-side issue, however using Google Chrome 45.0.2454.93.

@HeatherBrown I want to see if I'll be able to do it via ufw, I get it that it can be done via iptables, I just want to learn ufw as well)

7:52 PM
@HeatherBrown since you already started answering iptables questions, can you check this guy's code ? askubuntu.com/a/679796/295286

user139252
Ah. Well, I'm not your gal then.

I tried adding all the rules, but I don't see how it would ban an ip address
It still allows me to do sudo testuser@localhost and retry password twice (because I set MaxRetries to 2 )
Oh well

user139252
Well, I'm confused as to why he specified the interface...

user139252
the -i eth0 flag says to run this rule only on the eth0 interface... What if you're using anything other than eth0?

user139252
Try removing that flag from the rules

7:58 PM
What's that?

Oh I finally found the bug.

-1162 is a bug ^_^

@A.B. Already upvoted!

@Fabby, what is a -1162?

8:01 PM
O_o : you should ask a mod!

@A.B. Who is this btw?

Sorry @Mitch it's possible to get -1162? as seen in the screenshot above?

@A.B. I cannot see this on my version of your reputation!

@Fabby That's Ravan

user139252
8:03 PM
@serg after updating those rules, try connecting from another computer on the network

Ah!

user139252
I don't think it can really block local host

Reversal of a voting spree?

@AnubianNoob looks like it, but how???

Yeah 1162 is p ridiculous

8:06 PM
He must have created another user that consistently upvoted his answers to get a slam like that...
Or a bug...

Q: Create another shortcut `~~` like `~` (home directory)

VarunAgwI want ~~ to point to a different directory so I can use it as a shortcut. How can I do this?

I need a smoke

Who's next on the mod shift?
Seth?

@A.B. me too, too bad I cannot leave

@Seth: How could something like this happen?
link here (Sorry, I thought the above was a link)

Yeah, but 1161???
Have you looked at his graph?

Yeah that's pretty crazy
I have yeah
Maybe there was some voting ring going on?

@Fabby - please help to get this Ravan thing solved before he wakes up tomorrow ... I know a lot about his sensitivity and if he is not responsible for this I don't know what will happen to him ... I need a smoke as well ...

This must be corrected if there is a mistake. Ravan will be mad and I mean that seriously.

@cl-netbox Well, except for pointing this out to the mods, there's not much I can do!

8:13 PM
Hopefully he can handle that.

(and not even the mods can do something about it: the exact algorithm is secret and gets adapted all the time)

I mean Ravan

@Fabby okay - but please try your best - I think you have quite good 'connections' ... THANKS !

:P
@A.B. How was dinner? Full or not?

@Fabby I get nothing in my stomach.

8:15 PM
Steward badge #5, here I come.

Serial voting?

Yeah, but 1000+???

a voting army?

I'd be mad if this happened to me...

8:17 PM
Only a hundred votes
Or two hundred on questions

Easily done over a month

But it's 1162, where's the 2 from?

O_o
@muru But how???

@Fabby get a friend to vote on your posts ten times each day. Done.

8:19 PM
If that would happen to me, I'd be mad enough to leave...

Or make a puppet account

@muru Ah!
Puppet account makes sense!
@muru I once did it to Rinzwind: I read his answers in a series and upvoted...

@AnubianNoob maybe some question went into negative and got deleted?

(as he only writes good ones, it was seen as serial upvoting)

Yeah, that's why I take care not to go on too much of a binge
It seems its not the first time it happened to Ravan
-160 on Sep 2

8:22 PM
What HAPPENED to the review queue??? It's up to 5k like overnight from 500.
also o/ all

@hbdgaf o/ sup

@blade19899: can you edit this answer because I have no bloody clue what "The In a dir were all of your archives are in" means...

"My experience is different. With 11.04 it was a bit unstable. With 12.04, it works like a charm. (I never bothered with 11.10).

Try it."
This is an accepted answer ?

@AnubianNoob Ahhh. That explains it.

8:24 PM
I still don't understand why that's happening though lol
Ok I'm off to class, see ya later!

PSA: If you're thinking WHAT HAPPENED to the review queue, this happened.
5
^^ Someone star that please

@AnubianNoob oh, cr@p, more work!
let's get to the review queue then...
@hbdgaf I've starred @AnubianNoob 's one as he was quicker then you!

Totally okay. I just wanted to try and format it as a PSA, so anyone would know what it was without following the link.
I just starred it too.
I may hit the queue later, but I'm trying this "One Trello card per day" thing.

I might hit the queue too... with a blunt object.

8:28 PM
@hbdgaf I took the liberty of editing it. @AnubianNoob sorry for the loss of onebox.
@NathanOsman well, you'd have to hit the low-quality queue too. A ton of answers will get flagged.

I'm kidding :P

That's fair. If someone with powers wants to blow that star off of mine, feel free.

No, I'm just thinking that Jon didn't think through about the Low Quality queue getting affected as well.

Might have been better to do it over the course of a few weeks with a 5 point per week thing, unless the desire was to have everyone react with ZOMG

@muru He's a developer: they do... Analysts think!

8:35 PM
4900! in the review queue?

And then you have rare breeds like @NathanOsman who's an analyst-programmer...
@A.B. Hey! You just woke up or what?
look at the star wall... :P

@Fabby What do analysts do?

@NathanOsman Back when I was a kiddo...

@fabby I'm on mobile, there is no stars wall :p :)

@NathanOsman they tell monkeys how to monkey together code, but they don't know how to code themselves

8:36 PM
the hierarchy used to be: ...

apparently

>:-)
@A.B. this

As you're a reputation 9,479 user: If this answer helped you, don't forget to click the grey at the left of this text, which means Yes, this answer is valid! >:-)Fabby Sep 18 at 19:34

@Fabby Why don't you just call it "Good developer". Most anyone can say "You said ship a feature. I shipped a feature. Pay no attention to the spaghetti monster under the sheets"

Lol, xD

8:37 PM
@blade19899 Ah! He noticed! :D :D :D
@hbdgaf :D :D :D
saving in my quotes file!

@Fabby xD

@blade19899 So? did it help? Looked like a good answer...

Of 4 reviewed answers: 4 flags raised!
@blade19899 +1

@Fabby Yeah, I asked another question, that is more specific How can I install software on my client using my Ubuntu Server?

8:40 PM
@blade19899 well... Landscape is as official as it gets.
But most people would use Puppet or Chef or something like that.

@blade19899 Yeah, saw that :/
@muru I would use the Swedish chef!

@Fabby Wrong link, my bad: edited my previous comment

(or are you too young to get the reference?)
back to the review queue

@Fabby Correct link: [How can I install software on my client using my Ubuntu ](askubuntu.com/q/673997/36315)

@blade19899 kinda sad you settled for SSH.

8:42 PM
@blade19899 Yes, saw that... Already upvoted Q+A...

@muru Can you advice me a better option?

@blade19899 That's what I meant with the :/

@blade19899 Puppet or Chef. I use Puppet. Handles 256 clients like a breeze.

Back to the review queue

puppetlabs.com in combination with theforeman.org

8:44 PM
o/

The review queue is not only very full, it's ##slow!

@muru checking everything out.

Goodnight all :)

8:52 PM
@A.B. sleep well my friend ! :)

Did you follow the link next to "voting corrected"? Should give you everything you need to know.
Oops, that was for @Fabby --^

@Seth we don't get to see such large scale events here all that often, thankfully. :)

I will leave now as well - good night to all of you ! :)

@muru no we don't :)
Sometimes I wonder if the nature of Ubuntu has anything to do with that.

@Seth possibly. We can't compete with Stack Overflow in number of users, and we haven't got all the Windows-users from Super User.

9:00 PM
@Seth But 1000+ ??? What was it? A puppet account? I mean: that's why I asked: do you have any more info then just "serial voting"?
He's going to be upset in the morning and yell for me...

@Fabby already happened to him once before. Can't be a surprise.

(sorry)
@muru ah?
Well, that's good info...

40 mins ago, by muru
-160 on Sep 2

We'll see... If he does get emotional I'll first try calming him down and then ask a polite question on meta.au...

Mods have more information, but can't publish it most of the time
So if he does get any response, it's likely to be via a pm from a mod.
Or an email. I got one of those from Oli once.

user139252
9:16 PM
What's going on in here, guys?

absolutely nothing worth mentioning. :)

Sigh . . . had big plans today . . . end result ? Nothing done anyway

user139252
I should shake things up a bit then?

user139252
@Serg I kinda know how that feels.

user139252
My plans for today? Actually teach.

user139252
9:24 PM
What did I get done?

user139252
I gave all my classes a test because I'm too hungover to try.

@HeatherBrown it's badly shaken up. see meta.askubuntu.com/questions/14469/…

user139252
When are they going to fix that?

user139252
I saw they were only supposed to add in answers from the last month, not the entire history.

@HeatherBrown that quote looks like they have to be reviewed, so no "fix"

9:30 PM
Well, evidently the google xmpp server doesn't like something about the way I'm using the sleekxmpp library. Time to find one that just works.

user139252
So, we have to go through all 4K+ answers and review them to get it down to 0?

;)

@HeatherBrown You entering the room! o/
>:-)
@HeatherBrown Having a ball with your good friends Jack and Jim again???

user139252
Jack and Jim?

You should lay off the drinking during the week, just like me!
@HeatherBrown Jack Daniels and Jim Beam...

user139252
9:33 PM
No, my cousin Holly flew in from Munich.

user139252
Ah. Nope. Jaegermeister and Fireball =D

@HeatherBrown You're definitely not pure American stock!
>:-)
@HeatherBrown Yes!

@Fabby nothing public, no ;)

That's what I was doing before popping in (And the queue is S L O O O O W...) @HeatherBrown
@Seth Ah! Thanks for that (no irony...) :-)

Just remember: With the increase in late answers strictness on good reviewing will also go up. A good job is always more important than getting more reviews done ;)

9:36 PM
@Seth My first 4 reviews were 4 flags...
:-(

;)

Finally creating a 32-bit VM.

@NathanOsman BOOOO
32bit for NOOBZ

I need it for testing.

testing what

9:44 PM
My other 9 Linux VMs are all 64-bit.
@ThomasW. An application I've written.

ah

@Seth flags queue could use some smacking, IMO

@ThomasW. Will have to wait until tonight, but yes, it could. Just got home and I have to run out again in 10.

ok

9:47 PM
/me really wishes he could afford a Nexus 5X.

I haven't really been able to tell what the difference is between it and the original Nexus 6.
(Other than a slightly better processor and fingerprint reader.)

user139252
how much rep do you need to review Late Answers?

@HeatherBrown 150 iirc.

user139252
@NathanOsman I am totally getting a 6P

but I can't remember how to access the privileges page xD

9:49 PM
@HeatherBrown Oh? How come?

@terdon oh right, they changed it.

They did?

I think the 6P looks terrible with that camera bump.
@terdon Used to be 150 ;)

@Seth bookmark this now :P askubuntu.com/help/privileges

9:50 PM
I had no idea, I just checked now.

(I wish I were 20k now >.<)

user139252
@NathanOsman because it is like my current Nexus 6, but better.

@ThomasW. ah, it's in the help center :P

@Seth yes it is

@HeatherBrown I'm really curious as to how it is better.

user139252
9:52 PM
I like the fact that the fingerprint reader will be in the back.

...since I also have the Nexus 6.

user139252
@NathanOsman It's newer :P

True.
But newer isn't always better.
(And certainly isn't cheap.)

What are the Nexus 6's camera specs again?

user139252
Better battery life, that's a big one for me.

9:54 PM
@Seth 13 MP on the back IIRC.

that won't last long if it's a high-amperage charger unit

@NathanOsman I meant the the other specs.. pixel size, aperture.
too lazy to look it up atm ;p

user139252
I also use Hangouts video chat with my coworkers fairly often, so the upgrade on the front camera was one of the deciding factors

@Seth YOU LAZY!!!!!!

10:33 PM
@NathanOsman :D

If anyone has any ideas, I'm getting a SASL auth error on this code? I might just be on chillout from trying wrong too many times in one day.

@ThomasW. That's 20 points closer to 20K (btw: you should have reopen votes: reopen this as it has a perfectly logical answer to a perfectly illogical question!
@NathanOsman Exactly true: just like me! An old fart and still running around!
(though still not landing a job...) :-(

"I really feel for you. I'm so sorry it turned out this way."

@hbdgaf :D :D :D
Idiot! :D

I am now somewhat curious as to how Go builds executables for OS X.
Time to find out.

10:44 PM
@hbdgaf (or is the word "twit'" better then "idiot"?)

If it's an .app bundle, I can even sign it with my certificate.

@Fabby twit/twat/idiot... whatever works. i'll take it and not get pissed. met an author friend the other day, but he's more than a little crazy.
I bet he'll be at least a little good at chess this weekend though.

:-) I'd probably like him/her/it then!
@hbdgaf I never played chess before, but knew the rules because of the 10 queen problem...

It's a him. Nice, but low to medium functioning autistic spectrum. I'm glad he found writing.

beat the first guy who asked me to play chess with him...
(that was the first and last time I played chess)
@hbdgaf Perfect occupation!
SF writer?

10:48 PM
I haven't checked out his work yet. Met Sunday. So, I'll do my doxing before next weekend.
@Fabby I play better against people. Not as good against computers playing naturally. Found a few books that worked it out and ramped my score VERY quickly. One for openings, one for mid-game tactics, and one for endgame mate in X problems.

Never heard doxxing before...
@hbdgaf I'm too busy with other stuff to take on chess problems...

@Fabby You need a brain release problem that involves people sometimes. It's good for that purpose.

@hbdgaf I use cooking...
Invite some people over and cook for them...

Probably will do that.

I can get rid of the creativity that is bubbling up for the right audience...

10:51 PM
how the frack people gain so much rep on editing ? askubuntu.com/users/196255/flyk

@Serg max 2000!

@Fabby Duuuh

@Fabby Doxxing means something different for me, but the general word is finding out all information possible about a person. Name, address, next of kin, etc etc. I use it to mean finding out useful information about a person for a next encounter. Want to put someone challenged in that way at ease? Start talking to them about their book - sort of thing.

@Serg Hey, someone learning something by reading a ton of questions and answers??? Why the fµck not?
:P ;-)
@hbdgaf Ah there's a difference between doxing and doxxing???

An inability to spell.

10:54 PM
I never heard it before you used it...
:/
You know I take stuff like that literally! :P ;-)

I dunno, i don't brain well to day anyway

Oh yes. It's pretty common.

OK, so it's the same, then...
@NathanOsman in your age group, maybe...

It might be more of a regional thing.

@Serg Too much blood in your other head??? :P ;-)

10:55 PM
One x is probably technically correct.

@NathanOsman If you use it and hbdgaf uses it, it's not regional any more...

i wish, lol
not enough sleep

@NathanOsman I wouldn't call a circle with a 10K mile diameter "regional"... :P ;-)

cultural click/exposure to some similar kinds of people.

I fell less like an old fart already! ;-)
