@NathanOsman Huh? they don't need grub... Just boot from the USB stick fro...
oh, I forgot to mention the BIOS/UEFI
Thanks! answer updated...

@hbdgaf lies

I bitched about broccoli, but not vegetables in general.

@hbdgaf semi-lies

One teacher in kindergarten knew how to make broccoli. Then I would eat it. Anyone else, NOPE. But, honestly... no complaining from me on veggies.

12:11 AM
I like broccoli

I'm glad I now know that you're an alien.

I don't actually know why people seem to have such loathing for vegetables
I only sort of dislike bell peppers

I want to star that... but I won't.

why

o/ @Chan-HoSuh

12:15 AM
broccoli certainly should not be considered the representative of vegatables

Uh

\o @hbdgaf

while we're at it
\o/

can't leave you hanging..
o/ @Zacharee1
you look kinda silly with one arm still up with no high-five :)

text is weird stuff
@Chan-HoSuh what?

12:17 AM
I did a search after your "\o/" and I see only one "o/" or "\o", indicating someone left you hangin', :D
perhaps my regex is faulty

lol
k
tengo no idea
podemos hablar en espanol ahora?
oder Deutsch?

I left it hanging I think. sorry ;)

I should write a script to scrape chat logs and try and match up high-fives and see who is left hanging :)

For the love of god, don't bring the chatbot back.

eso is muy interesante
maybe the wrong word there
hmm

12:19 AM
you know what's sad, I remember a teacher telling me long ago, learn Spanish

jaja

and countless times since then, I regret taking German and then French, instead of Spanish

ahora, no puedes comprender mis insultados a tu
Aber Ich kann ein bissen Deutsch sprechen
So

speaking of chatbots, I was very annoyed to read a dialogue between the chatbot that won a recent Turing Test compeition and a human
clearly the chatbot is just playing games

what?

12:22 AM
do you know the Turing Test?

Ich kann nicht Francais sprechen
nein

basically it's a test to see whether a machine can pass as a human

hmm

No it's not. It's a test to see if the machine can build itself. Turing complete means, I have the instructions to describe myself.

well, it's related but not what I think is typically understood as the Turing Test
a human judge converses on a terminal through typing, and tries to see if the thing he is conversing with is a human or a computer program

12:25 AM
cool

a truly convincing computer program should be able to adapt and learn

People are making almost sentient programs and here I am with a limited knowledge of Python

A harder goal for sure, but not the same thing.

well, in my opinion ... some people would argue some kind of brute-force method could work
hehe, @Zacharee1, the key being "almost"

gotta love the rolleyes

12:28 AM
I guess the thing people like to argue about is what happens when a computer program can pass the Turing Test
is that program then "sentient"?
or just acting sentient?

@Fabby I didn't mean your answer, I was referring to him having the ISO on `C:`.
Hmm... chat markdown bug?

C:
yes
C:.
@NathanOsman

There is the grub loopback trick, but that needs grub...
Haha, wonder if it is grub 2: cstein.kings.cam.ac.uk/~chris/bootgrub.html

Q: Paths with trailing slashes being rendered incorrectly in chat

uɐɯsO uɐɥʇɐNConsider the following markdown: `C:\` In chat, this is rendered as follows: Instead of the expected output: C:\ Adding two slashes doesn't help: Although the slash appears, the text is not rendered in a monospace font and the backticks are shown.

`C:`
huh
`C:\`
`c:\`
this bothers me now

12:36 AM
I filed a bug.

why u hev sho dis

Rig up the proper loopback, make floppies and have it boot to the ISO on the drive... Too bad drives aren't in everything anymore, boot disks would be cheep instead of usb's

ew floppies

it's kinda getting annoying how a lot of devices assume you have a USB port to power them

Oh yes
Those pesky USB devices

12:39 AM
Well, you can dodge charger regulations if you don't ship chargers

hmm, didn't think of that ... I thought hip people just had lotsa USB ports

I have 4 whole USB ports

I do.

and a 7port hub, but who's counting

I think I have 6 in the back, two+1 in the front.
(The extra front one is part of the media card reader.)

12:40 AM
Although the computer I just built has 10 total
4 USB 3.0

None of mine are USB 3, but my router has a USB 3 port :P

my work computer has a lot too, but all but two are disabled

@NathanOsman I was thinking of why a router would need USB 3.0 for just comms, but then I remembered about media servers
It took me about 5 secs to type media and I failed anyway

@Zacharee1 Yup. Though I rarely use it. I have a NAS connected via gigabit ethernet which is as fast as any USB 3 device is going to be.

yurp

12:44 AM
Quick story - I found an apple charger at goodwill ($2)- used it for my Ubuntu phone, because it came with a Europe charger

that's funny

It worked?

That is the beauty of standards (and when apple actually uses them) just a regular USB power plug

@NathanOsman the power supply
not the cable

Did you just use "Apple" and "standards" in the same sentence?
@Zacharee1 Ah.

12:47 AM
Scary right

lol
Apple -- Innovation = Copying Everything from Android and jailbreak
Is it bad that my 1080p screen feels too low-res?

What's the pixel density?
My Nexus 5 had a 5" 1080p display and I'm typing this on a 27" 1080p display :P

The funny part is someone I know with a iphone asked me to borrow, but they couldn't use it ;p

@NathanOsman 15.6 inch screen, so pretty high I guess
@Mateo lol
@NathanOsman My phone is 1440p

Same here.

12:55 AM
27"? That's not a TV?
141 DPI on my monitor, to be exact
I think

@Zacharee1 No, I meant I also have a 1440p screen on my phone.

Yeah I know. I was just referring (late) to your previous message @NathanOsman
I don't like school

1:10 AM

1:23 AM
what don't you like about school?

The hw

too easy, too lame, too hard ...?

too much
2+ hours are expected

can you do some of it in school?

nope

1:26 AM
is it interesting?

Some is
It's just annoying
[usual complaints here]

as long as the homework isn't stupid, it's not really an issue as far as i can see :)
some things you would never learn to do without homework

yes, though 2+ hrs is a ton

hmmm 2 isn't a lot... I guess the "+" could be

I get lucky with about 2
others have over 4

1:30 AM
it's not possible to really learn something well in less than an hour
I presume you have homeworks from different classes

Well that's why we have 5 school days in a week
yes

well, I'm talking about doing homework ... sitting in class for hours at a time, I don't think is a good idea

And 0:45 or 1:15 classes
What seems to happen is we learn stuff in class and then the homework is either unrelated or learning more on our own
not much is additional practice

to cover more material?

We end up learning more stuff in the guise of homework
I would understand continuations of classwork

1:48 AM
somehow I get the sense you go to a pretty serious school

2:00 AM
@NathanOsman Does that mean I'm not a programmer? :(

No, of course not :P
But when you speil as bad as I do, sometime picking a diffirent wrod is easier.

2:31 AM
ha!
I believe I found a bug in Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS..
after I removed last rule: "22/tcp (v6) ALLOW Anywhere (v6)", ufw starts to netfilter)
What are alternatives to openvpn?

2:58 AM
Hang on, there was a tiny app we used a while back that was somewhat similar to OpenVPN but much simpler.
Aha... PeerVPN.

3:37 AM
Woohoo! My Django plugin works.
At least, the bare minimum works.

3:56 AM
hi
do anybody knows about maas ?

hi
Afraid I don't :/

ok :)

@user1856713 if you don't get help here, consider asking your question in #maas on freenode :)

I am working with maas-api
Yes i tried it in freenode
but because of new technology not getting much help
::(

:(
well good luck then!

Q: External HDD repository doesn't play nice w/ dependencies?

AmagicalFishyMy previous laptop died, so I decided to start Ubuntu anew on another. I've put the HD of the first into an External HDD and followed these instructions. The idea is that I'd like to not have to download .deb packages that are already in the archives of my old installation. The corresponding entr...

7:12 AM
2buntu.com is now running go-cannon! \o/

hg8

the "late answers" review shot up 4k-ish :P
page takes ages to load too
this one is marked for review: askubuntu.com/review/late-answers/472758?filter-tags=11.10 Last action on the topic is from 2012.

Q: What's up with the late answers queue?

kosIt looks like we currently have 4400+ late answers awaiting review: Obviously that's not possible, so what's up with that review queue? Looks like a server-side issue, however using Google Chrome 45.0.2454.93.

hg8
so we have to review them all ?

well it stops at 40 :=D
I would assume anything posted 6 months ago and is marked should be considerd a valid post :X
or it would have been marked 6 months ago

7:35 AM
I haven't visited the review page in ages
I got annoyed earlier, by all the crappy Q/A's. Sometimes I saw a massive wall of text, and editing out the redundant part out of it, was annoying and tedious work.

yeah I already marked some a's from 2012 as NAA _O-
I saw a q from Jorge with 103 upvotes and NO answer :-D

@Rinzwind Where? This is the one day I haven't had to go to some distant location to drop off hardware. So might give a try to answer it.

:D
ah damn. found it. the review page did not list answers but there is a 154 one >:D
20 reviewed. bored >:D

Good Morning to all of you ! :)

hg8
Good morning @cl-netbox

7:47 AM
@hg8 good morning my friend :)

@cl-netbox morning my friend

@Rinzwind Maybe you can help me with this: Every time at boot up I get a grub interface, and when I type exit, it continues to boot in to Ubuntu. That means I installed boot on sda and sdax somehow, right? If so, how you I uninstall grub, from the 'wrong' sda?

@A.B. good morning to you as well ! :)

Morning peeps!

wait. wrong.
@blade19899 do you get an error just before it enters grub?

7:49 AM
@Rinzwind No error. Just grub, then typing exit, then, starting Ubuntu.

that is weird :-P

hg8
Hi @A.B. =)

@hg8 o/ =)

You think installing grub-customizer, might make me wiser about this?

and I dont think you can install grub twice
@blade19899 try "boot-repair" :-)
GC is always nice to have installed but it has no troubleshooting parts. Boot-repair mght be better

7:52 AM
@Rinzwind ? boot from Ubunu Installer, install grub on sda2? and second time, on sda?
@Rinzwind boot-repair, is an option in grub-customizer?

@Rinzwind Thanks! Will try it when I get home!

:)
2nd attempt >:D bbl need a break

8:40 AM

Q: Ubuntu - Dual screen impossible by unity crash

DrannaI recently recieved my new hardware. I installed ubuntu 15 but got an error with my dual screen. I downgraded to the stable 14.04 ... But still the same. I have two monitors connected in HDMI and DVI on my GTX970 by Strix. The two of them are mirroring themselves. I tried to go in the "Displays...

2 hours later…
11:57 AM
@muru man, don't be so aggressive in your comments! Think again indeed!

What now?

@Zacharee1 What? =)

That stuff above

12:16 PM
@Ravan Remember that that mods can see deleted messages...

yeah - and it raises worry beads when we see deleted stuff here - we tend to think that potentially bad things are happening and thus waste time looking!

@fossfreedom :D

@Fabby o/

12:37 PM
I'm leaving for a job interview pretty soon...
Just doing some review queues to not to get too stressed!
And do some editing! ;-)

@Fabby Good Luck! Don't forget to mention your work here on AU, it's pretty impressive! :D

@Fabby o/

@Fabby Hello, how are you ? Hope you're "up and running" fine :)

@SmokeDetector Deleted!
@blade19899 It's for a PM's job. No Linux knowledge required AFAIK...

@A.B. Thank you very much for improving ... and ... :)

12:42 PM
@Fabby Switch them to Linux :-D

I'm off!
Bye

12:59 PM
@fossfreedom There's a userscript for that:
// ==UserScript==
// @name Show deleted chat messages for Stack Exchange
// @grant none
// @match *://chat.stackexchange.com/*
// ==/UserScript==

setTimeout(function() {

    var userscript = function($) {

    $('span.deleted').closest('.message').each(function() {
        var id = this.id.replace('message-', ''), _this = this;
        $.get('http://chat.stackexchange.com/messages/' + id + '/history', function(data) {
           var msgtxt = data.match(/<div class="content">([\s\S]+?)<\/div>/)[1].trim();
Mod only, I'm afraid, but it will show deleted messages so you don't need to check the manually.

1:30 PM
@terdon - cheers - will have a play a little later - looks very useful.

It's Undo's as I recall.

Q: ubuntu resolve unmet dependencies

Manoj KumarI have tried to upgrade from ubuntu 14.10 to 15.04, it stopped upgrading and offered a partial upgrade which I didn't do. Right now I'm having an issue with deja-dup-monitor which is consuming about 7GB of ram. I'm trying to uninstall it. But whenever I install or uninstall using apt-get it shows...

2:42 PM
@hg8 check gmail please :)

user139252
@A.B. This is why you never stop an upgrade.

Q: Run program x minutes after finishing

Tom HartMy question is kinda related to a cron job I think, but I'm not entirely sure. Say I have a script (/home/me/myscript.sh) that does something, that can take an indeterminate amount of time to finish, say a range of between 10 minutes to an hour. What I want, is for the script to run, and when it...
