Q: Reduce size of Gnome 3.14 Title Bar

IvanI need to reduce the size of the title bar on all Gnome applications on an Ubuntu 15.04 Gnome 3.14 installation. The recommendation of adding configuration to .config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css did not work.

user136984
Can anyone tell me by the way how to set this permanently?

@ParanoidPanda did you try the middle bit of the answer?
> For permanent changes put above command in .bashrc file.

user136984
6:21 PM
@Seth: Oh, no, I didn't notice that... :D

user136984
How do I get the value of $LESS by the way?

user136984
Do I just run echo $LESS?

Q: Flag removal - feature request

DanielCould you guys add a feature to unflag a post? It would be nice to see a list of what you have flagged as, and to be able to remove individual flags. I know this has happened to many people: The post requires a flag (which like a good citizen you provide) and an hour later the OP edits to fix ...

@ParanoidPanda Yes.

6:50 PM
@ParanoidPanda Pong

user136984
:D

@cl-netbox Yes all off them except the logo! :P

@Fabby :D:D:D (NO spaces)!:D - but logo counts ! :D

(Took a while, but eventually got back to that tab!)

@blade19899 Can you confirm this bug in qtox-unity? github.com/tux3/qTox/issues/2316
(@Fabby maybe as well)

6:55 PM
Reading...

user136984
Does anyone else have clamav installed?

@ParanoidPanda Installed, but never launched... :p

@ParanoidPanda me

user136984
Because I've possibly got a slight problem...

user136984
Do any of you get it when running sudo freshclam?

6:58 PM
@ParanoidPanda freshclam sometimes fails (for years now) but one of the next attempts succeeds. (automatical updates) so no manual action needed.

@ByteCommander Can you ping me in tox?
@ParanoidPanda me
@ParanoidPanda reading...

@Fabby For sure.

dings once...

@ParanoidPanda ... tested this in Windows (ClamWin) as well - same behavior.

@ParanoidPanda I don't have this

7:05 PM
@ParanoidPanda do you think I should write this as an answer -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/24382131#24382131 (don't need any DVs today ...) :D

user136984
@cl-netbox: You could do, but it doesn't really explain what the error means, it's just a general statement that could be used with any program and error really.

user136984
I would probably only accept it really if it had more information.

@ParanoidPanda It means you need to change DNS servers...(cc @cl-netbox)
Do you use your ISP's?
At most ISPs DNS servers have been installed more then 10 years ago, sit in a corner collecting dust, not being upgraded "becase it just works"

@ParanoidPanda .. as I am too focused on getting things solved and not so much interested what a single error means (in this case I think server connection cannot be established), especially when it's a temporarily problem ... I better do not answer. :) cc: @Fabby

OK...

7:15 PM
Google's DNS servers are easy to remember: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

@NathanOsman yup and Google knows even more about you then...

...than I do?
:P

I do a performance stat on the dns servers around me once/year...
Currently on a Swedish one.
@NathanOsman Probably! :P
>:)
@ParanoidPanda Hey, did you read any of this?
OK, ping me when you're back...

Although I care about privacy, I really don't care about the information Google can glean from DNS queries.

Any ideas here

A: Is there a PPA offering CMake >= 3.2 for Ubuntu Precise?

Nathan OsmanCMake 3.2.2 is available for Precise in this PPA: ppa:george-edison55/precise-backports (Click here for instructions on using PPAs.)

@A.B. ----^ Something for you!

@A.B. you missed my PPA :)
But please don't delete your answer.
It's a really good answer even if there is a PPA providing the package.

7:36 PM
@NathanOsman there is a for Precise? I did not find it. Shame on me. o_O

@A.B. It's okay - there's no easy way to search for packages in PPAs.

I'm leaving for now - have a good time - goodbye - see you ... :)

@NathanOsman @A.B. are you guys familiar with Ubuntu minimal ? This guy claims his /etc/init/tty1.conf file is empty oO

@cl-netbox cu my friend, sleep well. o/
No @Serg
:\
@NathanOsman I've added a link in my answer :)

user136984
8:04 PM
@Fabby: Oh yes, sorry, I just started eating and then I couldn't stop! :D

user136984
I use my ISP's DNS.

user136984
@Fabby: You seem to know a lot about this, maybe you should post an answer to my question. :)

@A.B. Great, +1.

8:23 PM
I am having such a difficult time trying to do this
I have an external HDD w/ a bunch of .deb packages in it
and am trying to set it up as a repository. I created the Packages and Source files
and am adding something like "deb /media/me/hdd/packages oldhd" to the sources.list
but whenever i type in "sudo apt-get install -t oldhd", it doesn't see the repo. :l
anyone know what's up? I've been working on this for soooo long

user136984
What is the name for this bit of Nautilus?

user136984

user136984
I mean like the proper name for it.

I don't know if the proper name, but I call it the locations panel or locations pane.

@ParanoidPanda That's the sidebar

user136984
8:48 PM
@Terrance: Is there any way to customize it?

user136984
Like to add sections to it?

@ParanoidPanda You can drag folders over to it, and it will create a Bookmarks area for them.

@NathanOsman - design question. What do you think about using XMPP as a peer to peer communication channel for fisticuffs?

Any ALSA experts care to take a shot at this?

Q: Sound (Beats Audio) problem on HP m6-1035dx Linux Mint

LordRaydenMKYesterday I installed Linux Mint (17.2) on my HP Pavilion m6-1035dx and I'm experiencing problems with my sound. The laptop has 2 speakers and a subwoofer (Beats audio). Only the right speaker works. I checked with the sound app (Sound test). After exploring I found a relevant article on linux....

9:04 PM
Is there a way to disable "apt-get clean" so I don't ever run it again

@terdon I'm not sure if it's related, but I killed pulseaudio not so gracefully on an Intel HDA laptop from HP and the card got stuck in an inconsistent state. I don't remember what it did to fix it, but even ALSA broke related to a pulse state problem. Just putting it out there that the problem might not be alsa.

@hbdgaf Hmm, thanks. I don't know much about this either.
@AmagicalFishy Why? I mean, what exactly do you want to avoid?

Well, my old computer died and I transferred everything to a new one. I don't have access to [good] internet now, so I can't download all the packages I need
but I do have my old HDD in an external case, and have set it up as a repository
but the /var/cache/apt/archives folder doesn't have all the .deb files (like I thought it did) because I've run apt-get clean on it before
actually
i'm just going to set up an alias for "apt-get clean" that echos "NO DON'T!!!"

@hbdgaf Hmm... I've never used XMPP before but it sounds like a good idea.

9:08 PM
@NathanOsman You don't have to do any socket manipulation or router hole punching and you don't need to have a server any more. That was my thinking.

Right - and that's a good thing.

@Darth_Vader - I don't know whose idea it was to put a mustache on Vader, but it's awesome.

thanks

@Takkat - If you have any tips on this question @tedron was looking for help.

@Darth_Vader Hello.

9:14 PM
If anyone on AU has an answer for you Tedron - Takkat is the one.

@blade19899 It's a pretty installer.

Looks nice!

9:18 PM
oh wow

@hbdgaf Hope we can test it soon

Will Unity be updated to that look?

@Zacharee1 Yes. In the long run.

Oh good
Unity really doesn't look very good right now IMO

that... just looks like windows 8

9:20 PM
I think it looks better

I think the changes will land in Ubuntu 16.04. 15.10, Wily Werewolf, is to near it final release to add new changes.

@AmagicalFishy No dull colors

i don't :(

@AmagicalFishy Never seen Win8 installer

@AmagicalFishy They're bright and textured

9:21 PM
everything is bright and textured now a days

I like the Windows 8-y tic tac color swatches as a theme. I was and am against a tic tac root menu system with no trees at all, but I do like it as a "theme"

it's like hanging christmas lights everywhere

But Windows 8 is just a bunch of dull colors

i find what unity looks like now a lot more relaxing

iOS 7, 8 and 9 are all just gray

9:21 PM
wait, we might be thinking of different things

OS X is just gray as well

@Zacharee1 I wasn't talking about colors. I was talking about shapes.

@hbdgaf not you

that's what i was talking about @hbdgaf --- but, on the color-subject

9:22 PM
That image gallery of the Windows 8 installer shows it does not look like the Ubuntu Installer

windows 8 is super colorful o.O

No it doesn't
Win 8 isn't colorful
They're all REALLY dull colors
It's do depressing

huh.
this does not strike me as dull colors
what unity is now does (and i like dull colors)

Compared to Win 7's bright and transparent colors it's dull

I like muted monochromatic sorts of themes, so I'm not the one to talk to on colors.

user136984
9:23 PM
Goodnight! :)

geeze
you must like some really, really bright stuff. :p

Yesh
I like the transparency especially
but Windows 8 never looks good to me
I had to install Glass8 on my Win 10 install b/c the solid white was too boring

at least we can agree on that, haha

No one likes Win 8
No start menu, no customer influence

I hope part of the redesign is to turn off or be able to turn off transparency for most UI elements. That way you only have it when you want it - and you can run lower temps/better performance on low end GPUs

9:25 PM
@hbdgaf this
yes
definitely
gtgfn

@Zacharee1 this is what my ubuntu looks like now:
the least colorful ever ;v

I love Deepin's look. Unity should really improve the icons, to be simple yet bright. Also the panel

@AmagicalFishy Or, if you want to avoid someone else or the system running it, you could always rename the executable to apt-dirty or whatever so it won't be found. Easy enough to move it back once you have decent internet access again.
@Serg If Unity got rid of the icons, I might consider using it.
I hate this trend of designing everything for touchscreens.

@Serg I like the sleekness of the stock icons in the taskbars now. No matter what the color scheme is "color a foreground - color b or transparency for background" just looks so neat and clean.

@terdon Well, the fact is touch devices are here to stay, so OSs will adapt accordingly

9:29 PM
@Serg Sure, but why do we need to have the same interface on both?
All that does is give us an interface that doesn't really work well on either.

@Serg because buzzwords

@AmagicalFishy what ?

because it's fashionable. touch is the new hot thing
so if your products don't support touch, your products aren't the new hot thing

Windows and Unity keep trying to provide this silly "computing experience" and it has to be the same for all your devices. I want an interface that's designed to take advantage of whetever machine I'm using. Not one that is forced into a one size fits all mentality.

@AmagicalFishy yes, that ; and making users feel at home on any platform. At least that's how i see it.

9:32 PM
yeah.

I think that whole "convergence" thing goes back to something I saw/read somewhere about a child being able to use it without being told how. A 4 year old picks up a flip phone and tries to make the screen scroll by swiping. Then once they can use one device, they can use them all and feel "safe" doing so.

@terdon well, probably developers should give users an option, choose touch interface or cross-platform interface.

Anyway, them's some ugly buttons. I used to like that sort of thing when I was using WindowMaker but there was nothing else around!
@Serg Yup. I think Windows actually does that. You'd think Canonical would as well!

I'm with tedron though. If it's a desktop, I want it to feel like a desktop. Best interface for the hardware.

@terdon with time; don't forget that Linux is a penguin and penguins go slow but far :)

9:33 PM
Is it just me or is pushing to GitHub extremely slow today?

@hbdgaf Great. Now I can sleeo soundly knowing that next time a nuclear engineer brings their kid to work, they will know enough about the interface to cause a meltdown. :P

It took me about two minutes to push a few KB.

I haven't pushed anything today, so I don't know.

@Serg Unity has been around for a while now. And it's the only DE that does that kind of thing. Even Gnome aren't so obsessed with touch.

@terdon You know what I meant. We agree on how we think it should be. I just think this is the why.

9:35 PM
@hbdgaf I know, I was just yanking your chain.

Meanwhile, I have exam in about 30 minutes in my Analog Electronics and still only half-ready
dem sexy opamp circuits yo !

@Serg Go study then!
@Serg otherwise I'll just ping you.
I can kick you out of chat if you like.
How about a half hour suspension? :)

@terdon be my guest, ping me as much as you like :D
i can meowltitask
@terdon actually oli did that before when i needed to do homework
that was quite effective :D tho i still was lurking in the chat, reading

I'd be happy to oblige. I tend to hang out in chat rooms with nice people like yourself and have very rarely had reason to use my hammer.

@terdon that probably means the community quality is good , if one uses the ban-hammer rarely

9:40 PM
Oh yes! I certainly wouldn't want it any other way.

There's a joke about The Bridge just waiting to be made here...

I think I've only ever kicked anyone from chat twice.

Frankly, it seems like askubuntu is much more friendlier compared to stackoverflow . If you look at the comments there it's like argument on argument :/ At least so it seems
@NathanOsman the bridge ?

Another chat room for the Gaming.SE folks.
It's... uh... a very interesting room...

Yeah, well, there are a couple of reasons for that. 1) Everyone here likes Ubuntu (well, except me) so there's less room for argument. 2) SO is about 50 times larger, or so;
@NathanOsman Yeah, don't spend much time there. Plus, no mod powers there anyway.

9:42 PM
In chat?

wow
so many messages

@NathanOsman Oh, hang on, sorry. I was thinking of the tavern.

@Zacharee1 yeah, it tends to happen when there's lots of people

@Serg sarcastic face

9:44 PM
Side note : told my mom I wanted to build a variable power supply for my electronics projects ; she was full - serious : " No,no,no. You're gonna blow something up. "

Well maybe you will

Lol , i think she might know about my non-existent engineering skills :)
@Zacharee1 eh, two 9 V batteries cannot make that much boom, can they ?

Depends on how you plan to make that explosion
If you heat them vs if you directly short them out

Heh, I prefer more elegant methods : like frying them with deodorant + a lighter. Kidding. What I really want to do is something like this : circuitstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/…
Two 9 volt batteries , in series make 18 V, then with voltage regulartor I can vary output from 5 to 15 V
and then I haz meself a simple power supply that costs around 10 $

Just DO IT - you know who

9:51 PM
Obligatory Shia Labeof

@ParanoidPanda you should off course use this list instead of the one in my answer
(As you still need holding hands and stuff)
:P :D
@A.B. ping
@ParanoidPanda I just did... :P >:)
When I say "Reading", it means I open stuff in a tab and I'll get to it when I get to it...

Who be smart about systemd over here ?

E.G. for @Serg's answer, it took me 2 days! You're just lucky that I got to it so quickly!
@Serg Not me... Rinzwind is...

@Fabby what is E.G. ?
@Rinzwind so . . . someone (hint,hint) told me you are smart at systemd stuff ? askubuntu.com/q/679419/295286
OK, I am officially late for my Analog Electronics exam. Fish me luck, guys !
sudo shutdown -P now

@Serg Good luck!!

10:14 PM
@Serg "Exempla Gratia" (Latin for "For example")
@Serg Good luck, fingers crossed, knock on wood, (Ouch! Passes out...)

@hbdgaf I'm here now (sorry for the delay)

@Seth No problem. I was just pointing at the github if you want to play the cli prototype. I'm up to working on multiplayer now. I'ld have to get your gmail address to play/test with you once I get it that far.
It's hotseat only for now. I need to get networked games working, but I got distracted on Sunday. It was for the better though. I met a local author (walking distance) that it would be fun to play chess with. You don't get that every day. So... anyway.
@Serg love that one

10:54 PM
He really set himself up for these when he decided to stand in front of a green background

Even if it makes fun of him a little it is a good message to send, so I don't think it really matters.
What are you going to do? Say "Stop telling people to get motivated." It's not like they took anything out of context and crucified him with it.

11:14 PM
@hbdgaf I'll give it a go when I get some time. aking on github I assume? (I didn't see a link in chat..)

@Seth Here
Still very much a work in progress

Cool!

@hbdgaf is this a Python 3 app?
Nvm, answered my own question.

Yes. ahhh too slow

Seems to run okay.
I'll have to spend some time learning the rules.

11:22 PM
If you look at my rules and the originals rules, you'll see differences that I think make it more balanced/obvious.
Think "Game action for defender only pieces attacking". It would have been simple to write a rule for that, but this other way makes more sense.

@terdon I thought they were eventually going to put in the icons they were making on the phone, those are nice

Next steps are XMPP communication and breaking out the "client/UI" from the "server/validator". Everyone runs their own server. You just publish your move. If you disagree about the board layout, you both disconnect from one another. Could lead to some weird error conditions if someone plays a client that doesn't agree, but oh well.

I'm not writing unit tests until I have it client-server. So, I can just say "send this move and see what happens"
I suppose I could put in an "authentic" game mode and an "enhanced" game mode eventually.

The prof says the input file should contain no new lines then goes and posts her sample file with one blank line in the middle of the file. WTF yo ?

Same as me saying follow pep then using 2 space indents like Google does.

@hbdgaf you'd make a good comp science prof then ! Lol

11:37 PM
Do as I say, not as I do... until you understand when it's okay to break the rules.
7
^^ I just made a tshirt.

@hbdgaf for sure
anyone here have Win 10?
anyone here?

If it's a question, I can spin up an IEVM, but no - it's not already installed. nobody paying me to use it right now.

I was just wondering who had it and what their opinions were

Somebody star that hbdgafs quote !

@Serg Which?

11:43 PM
Do as I say, not as I do... until you understand when it's okay to break the rules.
^^ I just made a tshirt.

done
It's good

there now in order ;)

Time for Custom Ink
hey
There we go

Another idea for a tshirt
Roses are read, violets are blue, i run linux, Microsoft? F u !

lol
But Windows isn't that bad
7 was amazing
and XP
8? ugh
10? meh
And let's just forget about the atrocity named Vista

11:51 PM
And Windows ME. Don't forget Windows ME.

ew
I think we want to forget it

I haven't played with with xp much but i had vista on my toshiba a215 and win 7 on another toshiba. Since then i nuked vista but still keep win 7 because i have a circuit simulation software which costs 40$

On a side note, the way I experienced Windows 3.1 was by putting it on my iPad
@Serg Seriously. If XP hadn't gone out of support, most people would still be using it

I'm considering getting win10 into virtualbox but not sure if that is worth my money and time

People still use it ;p
8 is pretty good outside the UI
as is 10
but meh, I'll probably just throw classic shell on 8/10 if I was unhappy with it

11:54 PM
Yeah. 8 is functional, but no one likes it because they removed the start menu w/out warning

@Zacharee1 xp is out of support but it's not like people cannot use a pc with it :)

I actually like 10

I'm almost purely running 10.

@Serg no, but most programs no longer work

My dad has a XP box
(I run my webserver(s) on ubuntu)

11:55 PM
Windows 7 is the new XP

@Zacharee1 which programs?

also ugh. Not having any working linux boxen sucks.

Newer ones, more advanced ones, that sort of thing

(My linux box had a hardware failure, its getting RMAed but it'll take a few days)

I need to get Ubuntu on here eventually

11:56 PM
Duh , it's the developers problem not xp

But Glass8 and this amazing theme atlas do a good job at making me like 10
@Serg sarcastic?

@Zacharee1: I tend to run fedora + KVM for my 'core' systems
then throw ubuntu over that

I love KDE Ubuntu, but there's one thing that bothers me about it

(fedora has the most recent KVM builds from what I can tell, and fast, semi rolling releases. I run ubuntu LTS since its got the best application support for my needs)

THE STUPID XORG MEM LEAK

11:57 PM
lol

I need a fix for it, but there seems to be none

KDE is pretty but my laptop doesn't handle it. So i use gnome or one of the boxes. Openbox or blackbox
Meanwhile I'm in luuuv with deepin

How old is your laptop?
