1:20 AM
@Fabby ha, saturday night fever in front of my dual-monitor setup. I am single as fsck -N , so no partying with girls for me. Meanwhile it's mid-autumn festival, a big asian holiday, so I got myself some moon cakes to snack upon tonight

@Fabby =) yes!
@Fabby I understood I need to find better answer, correct?
@Serg o/

Is it normal for the big email providers (Gmail, Outlook.com, etc.) to introduce a delay when receiving emails containing attachments?

1:45 AM
@Ravan o/

@NathanOsman Yeah, attachments take long. I've mostly gave up sending attachments

Oh, hang on. I found the error.
[gmail.com] 555 5.5.2 Syntax error. rt6si16567356pab.69 - gsmtp
It doesn't like the "User <user@domain.com>" format of the "From:" field.

Usually send a gdrive link

@Mateo Right - but in this case, I'm writing a program to act as an SMTP client. So it kinda has to support attachments :P
As soon as I fixed the format of the "From:" field, it arrived instantly.
Attachments intact.
Oh wait a minute... I think I might know why it doesn't like the format...

2 hours later…
3:38 AM
@Fabby btw, this edit was ok: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/458858
removing a dead link is good.

4:23 AM
This basically says it all http://t.co/7Unpymk4bU

4:36 AM
@NathanOsman Lol. You should probably include that bit into your blog on the ideal language

Q: why I was not notified when my post was deleted?

RavanI will get In-box messages when , I got chat reply My post edited (that too only for first edit) a comment posted on my post or in response to my comment on someone else post when there is a message with @Ravan etc.. But I am not getting message when my post was deleted(either by peer or ...

5:31 AM
@NathanOsman Also, let me guess. That blog is wordpress and hosted on digitalocean. Me be correcto ?

5:47 AM
Well... not exactly.
It's a WordPress blog but it's hosted in a Docker container on my Linode.

6:00 AM
o/ all

6:11 AM
How goes the app?

Coming along. Adding direct multiplayer support with xmpp instead of client/server

Cool.

Yeah, should cut out any "set up a server & pay some money" overhead. It'll make move validation for all clients harder though.

@A.B. What comment? Could you be precise? Maybe add a link so I can see what you're talking about. Thanks :)

I wonder if I can auth to two different google chat xmpp addresses at the same time from the same ip :)

6:23 AM
So . . . I just watched this: youtu.be/Av2Umb6nELU
2
And still kinda don't get what docker is
but i think i get it
it's like . . . . neutral platform for any app
right ?

@Serg ...
are you there?

@Ravan yesh

don't mind - are you a programmer ?

@Serg Yes. Give or take. If you wanted to run anything anywhere, docker could give you an identical deployment target without depending on which linux flavor you were running.

@Ravan I'm not a programmer. I'm just a lowly engineering student , with a feeble attempt at computer science minor

6:26 AM
@Serg please have a look here

@Serg I officially love that guy. "You hot glued and duct taped... You did what? Also, no problem."

@hbdgaf yeah, his presentation is quite interesting, although he looks nervous a bit
@Ravan reading
I'm pretty sure it's not quite possible with lightdm, but there may be another lock screen that does it

@Serg any idea?

@Ravan not at the present moment

@Serg ok

6:36 AM
In other news, I just found out I got SWATed this week while I wasn't home.

@Ravan how exactly did you add those lines to the file ? Can you explain what is happening in more details ?

@Serg sure!
@Serg I will add that file to pastebin

ok

@Serg Can I tell you what happened?

@Ravan go ahead, yes

6:48 AM
I tried 6 incorrect logins but 7 th time it logged in with correct password...not blocked.
Next time same 6 in correct...I opened tty1..It doesn't accepted my password until four times....then accepted.when I run the command "pam_tally2 --user ravan" ....It showed 0 failure attempts
@Rinzwind hello

@Ravan I'd probably try to remove those entries for now from the file. As for limiting login attemts, i know there is /etc/login.defs file
I used to use it on my old HDD, to set max logins to 3
however , it resets counter after 3 attempts, it doesn't lock as on android

@Serg yes /etc/login.defs is there!
@A.B o/ morning

Q: switching to debian 8.2.0 x64 from ubuntu 15.04 x64 need help

Muhammad SufiyanI am currently using Ubuntu 15.04 x64 and now want to switch to Debian so for that I have prepared a bootable usb stick but I don't want to lose my data that are in /home directory of Ubuntu but also I don't want to use Ubuntu (although it is good OS ). as I am not very expert with Linux install...

7:04 AM
@Mitch this is the link

And I mean this comment
> Ouch. One of the approvers has approved over 10000 edits... and rejected only 4. One of your mods should have a close look at what that user is doing.

I"VE HAD IT WITH MISTYPING SUDO WITH SUDUO
I'm gonna alias it to something now

Morning guys

sup

7:27 AM
Good Morning ! :)

7:38 AM
@RAvan so far i have no clue how to actually implement it. Pam at least in my case doesn't seem to work
i will come back to your question tomorrow
for now, upvoted it
and favorited

@Serg how are you ?

@cl-netbox OK, a bit tired. Ready for bed .
how are you ?

@Serg fine - thanks - just left bed - about 2 hours ago ... :)
@Serg do you have time to recheck an answer for me ?

sure

@Serg ... had a lot work with it ... askubuntu.com/questions/678719/… ... hope everything is correct ... :)

7:59 AM
@cl-netbox i think that question is more suitable for @Fabby . Besides , I am not familiar with linux bootloader and neither could I find bcdedit on my ubuntu

@Serg The answer derives from own experience - bcdedit is a Windows command line tool - thank you for checking anyway.

I am very inexperienced with Windows. I am much more comfortable on Linux :) Though I don't know a lot in linux either, just n00bing around

@Serg Okay - I didn't know that (most people used Windows before switching to Linux) - in case I miss your leaving point - have a good night and sleep well my friend ! :)

Well, I was a Windows user, just not a windows power user
My experience there was limited to watching youtube and basic stuff
and some feeble attempts at coding in visual studio
Then one nice day I was very upset with myself and my school stuff. . . and decided to install ubuntu
Anyway, i am gonna go
Good night

@Serg Good night - sleep well ! :)

8:10 AM
@cl-netbox o/

@Ravan o/
@A.B. Good Morning ! :)

@cl-netbox Moin =)

@A.B Publishing has been disabled for this archive.
what does it mean?

@Ravan What?
@Serg sleep well my friend =)

@A.B. I saw that message on launchpad for certain ppa

8:14 AM
=)
:24354542 Don't understand

8:41 AM
@A.B. Unfortunately we have no jurisdiction over at stackexchange :(

8:53 AM
@Mitch And what do you think this is a bug and / or a duplicate?

9:06 AM
@cl-netbox for [you ](askubuntu.com/questions/662739/…)

9:36 AM
how do I apply different GTK and window decoration theme on Ubuntu?

9:50 AM
Guys I need halp

@Mitch if you're around, do you have any idea why my flag on this answer was declined? None of those comments are remotely useful, do you guys not want me to flag obsolete comments?

I've installed Nvidia drivers on my 15.04 PC, and am getting an error on boot
[.......] ACPI PCC probe failed.
starting version 219

Ah, Mitch has left. @jokerdino I'll bug you then.

After that, it just stays on that
Only way to get out is to long-press the power button

@MadaraUchiha Before anything is loaded? At what point does that happen?

9:52 AM
@terdon Right after grub

Old machine?

Brand new
I had it all set up correctly and everything worked
Then I tried to install nvidia drivers so that the animations are less clunky
(I have a GTX 970)

Try the acpi=off parameter. Just in case. Hit e on the grub screen and add acpi=off to your kernel's options.

One moment

When you say right after grub, are there no boot messages displayed? Nothing?

9:54 AM
Under setparams 'Ubuntu'?
@terdon Nothing
@terdon Where do I add that?

@MadaraUchiha On the "linux" line, there should be something like :
linux   /boot/vmlinuz-4.0.0-1-amd64 root=UUID=5e285652-3677-4e0d-92c5-3904a97ddf5a ro  quiet
add it to the end of that line.

OK
Now it just says "starting version 219"

lol, one down, one to go :)

But I still couldn't get the service enabled
I entered recovery mode and started a root terminal

@terdon What's up?

9:58 AM
And cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager tells me /usr/sbin/lightdm
sudo systemctl enable lightdm.service -f gave me the same error as the one in the question: Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Could not connect: No such file or directory (g-io-error-quark, 1)

@jokerdino Just wondering why a flag was declined. Not complaining, just curious. I've had some flags I raised on useless comments declined and am wondering if the AU mods would rather I don't flag them. It's the kind of thing I would remove on U&L. Latest example here: askubuntu.com/questions/678695/… (the second flag on my raised flags list)

I also tried purging all of nvidia's drivers from apt-get, but it told me there was an error with the lock.

@MadaraUchiha Huh? While in the rescue shell?

Hm, I would have purged the comments myself.

10:00 AM
That's odd. Sounds like you'd be better off posting a question. Make sure you link to the ones you mentioned.
@jokerdino Yeah, me too, which is why I was wondering if you guys feel differently.

W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock
E: Unable to write to /var/cache/apt/
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

@terdon maybe he would like you to individually flag those comments. Not sure.

@jokerdino That's odd. That's 10 times the work!
For you, I mean.
@MadaraUchiha Hmm. Were there any problems when installing the drivers?

Usually, I will read them all and delete individually.

None that I've seen

10:02 AM
@jokerdino Yeah, me too. In this case, none are relevant any more. Those that were have been incorporated into the answer and the rest are noise.

@terdon The comments are removed now.

@MadaraUchiha I must be missing something. Any issue with the drivers shouldn't appear until a good deal later in the boot sequence. I'm guessing it's a DKMS issue but I don't really know enough to help. Post a question.
@jokerdino Cheers. And you, at least, would say that such flags are useful? I don't want to bug you guys if you don't.

You should ask the guy who handles the flags the most :P

@MadaraUchiha Ah, no, hang on. You were in read-only mode there I think.

@terdon Yes
Managed to mount for r/w and removed nvidia packages

10:05 AM
@MadaraUchiha OK, then that error makes sense. Not the rest though.

Worked like a charm

So now you're back where you started?

Almost

@terdon, no flag is useless. Keep flagging obsolete comments.

Now when I startup I get the "Sorry, Ubuntu 15.04 has experienced an internal error" dialog

10:06 AM
@jokerdino Will do, thanks.

And opening the details shows it's /usr/bin/Xorg
Although everything appears to work well.

@MadaraUchiha WHAT? Bloody hell, they really are turning it into Windows.
<rant> Time to start using a grown up distro </rant>

"an internal error" indeed. Next we'll be having a BSOD

There was a question somewhere about properly installing nvidia drivers
Anyone has a link handily?
Those 5FPS animations are driving me insane.

10:09 AM
The “Starting version 219” thing seems to be quite common. I found quite a few posts about it but no clear solution so far.

Yeah, it appears to be a bug

@MadaraUchiha I normally do it thusly (but it's been a while, things may have changed):
sudo apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
sudo m-a auto-install nvidia-kernel${VERSION}-source
sudo apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-settings nvidia-xconfig
sudo nvidia-xconfig
And that's on Debian, I think Ubuntu has some sort of GUI tool for it.

For crying out loud, this sort of crapness happens on every machine that happens to have an NVidia graphics card
Why is it so damn complicated?

Actually, I haven't had a problem with nvidia for years.

Q: Tag synonym request: duplicate -> [duplicate-files]

muruduplicate's wiki says: Two or more files that exactly same. ... which is pretty much what duplicate-files says right in the name. Either way would do, but one of them must go. Aside: Ah. We can't have [duplicate] in question titles. :D

@terdon I get these problems every time I install a new PC.\
The animations look like crap
Then I try to install nvidia drivers
Then it all collapses into a huge mess

Dunno, they've installed fine for me over the last few years.
Did you try i) the Ubuntu GUI tool and ii) the commands I gave above?

@terdon What gui tool???

@MadaraUchiha Ubuntu has some kind of "install restricted drivers" GUI tool.
What is it called and how can he get it Ubuntu people?

I'm thinking "additional drivers"?

10:56 AM
It used to be called jockey, no idea what it's called now.

OK, now there are more weird problems
The "Starting version 219" problem is back
But when I go through recovery and resume booting, it works, plus the animations appear to be smooth

Oh. Progress, of sorts.

What did you do?

Went through the "Additional Drivers" tab in the Software and Updates GUI\
And selected the first proprietary driver there

11:04 AM
OK. Do you have inxi installed?

Following askubuntu.com/a/615426/133672 seems to have made good progress
I still see the error briefly, but then it loads fine
@terdon I do
:P

Install it. It won't help here, it's a diagnostic/system info tool but very useful. I think it's in the UBuntu repos now, so try sudo apt-get install inxi and then show us the output of inxi -G.
@MadaraUchiha :)

> > $ inxi -G ⬡ 4.1.1
Graphics: Card-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
Card-2: NVIDIA GM204 [GeForce GTX 970]
Display Server: X.Org 1.17.1 drivers: nvidia (unloaded: fbdev,vesa,nouveau)
Yeah, disregard the 4.1.1 it's extra output generated by nvm

OK, so you're using the nvidia driver.

Yes
Setting nomodeset appears to have done quite well

11:10 AM
Did you try using the nomodeset option as described in askubuntu.com/a/391608/85695
@MadaraUchiha Ah, good. Are you sorted then?

Looks like it
I shall return if more shenanigans arise :P

Cool :)

3 hours later…

@terdon This was a case of pressing the wrong button due to kids jumping on their dad :) Συγνώμη

> "Open a terminal and start sudo -i gedit /var/lib/dpkg/info/avg2012lms.prerm. Make the changes and save" Yes but how to save? xD
AAAAAH

2:25 PM
@terdon yeah, that's not nvidia specific. I get it on my machine and I only have intel graphics.
(cc @MadaraUchiha)
I think it has something to do with systemd, but I'm not sure.

@Mitch No worries, I was just curious and thought there might be a different local policy. And yeah, I know the feeling, no kids but quite familiar with misclicking on flags :)
@Seth Huh, OK. Good to know

user136984
2:54 PM
@NathanOsman: How could anyone call @GeorgetheDev annoying...? :(

user136984
What annoying about what he does?

I love him saying goodnight to me (even if he sometimes gets the wrong person...)! :D

user136984
3:30 PM
Anyone have any ideas for how to use this software by the way?

user136984
Well, that is the software in the answer. :)

Did you try reading the manpage?

user136984
Also VTC this as off-topic.

@ParanoidPanda why?

user136984
@Seth: I attempted to, however there is an indescribable bug in my man program which I am not really able to describe and therefore can't report, but also makes it so that it is rather difficult to read manpages.

user136984
3:36 PM
Because it is cross-posting, and doesn't really ask anything anyway.

@ParanoidPanda try maximizing the terminal window and then open the manpage :)
@ParanoidPanda Check the latest revision ;)
You're two behind.

user136984
@Seth: Oh... :D

user136984
You see in man if I scroll down, when I try to go back up again, almost like a sleeve, some of the bottom of the page goes up too meaning that I am unable to see all of the page, nor am I able to get to it. Resizing does not really help.

oh that's odd.

user136984
It's like when I go down, and then back up again part of the bottom of the page comes up too like a sleeve over the top of everything.

user136984
3:48 PM
@Seth: If I do man dpkg it starts off looking like this:

user136984

user136984
However if I scroll down to the bottom of the page and then up again I get this:

user136984

I almost wonder if that is some sort of feature..
an error massage.
Not sure how I would feel about that.

user136984
Wait, are we talking about your thing or mine? :D

3:51 PM
@ParanoidPanda everything before the image is about your situation.

@edwardtorvalds did you try what I suggested ?

nope, sorry, but your answer were lil vague

@edwardtorvalds what ? - did you read my comment ?

4:55 PM

okay - start VB GUI
does it open ?

all the VMs are gone

@edwardtorvalds did it open without error ?

5:33 PM
yes it did (there is was no problem in launching)

so @edwardtorvalds that is exactly what I assumed and what I explained in my answer - and in my comment !!!

anyway whats next?
@cl-netbox Now I am making new VM but I am getting same error

@edwardtorvalds Did you temporarily delete the folder in which you placed the old VMs ?

can you make a screenshot of the error message and upload ?

5:39 PM
see my question

is debian mentioned again ?

I am getting same error for all the VMs (except for the name part which changes)

for which VMs ? - I think you deleted them ?

in past I was getting same error for all VMs, now I made new VM it also is giving same error

was this in earlier versions as well ?
@edwardtorvalds did you completely uninstall everything relating earlier versions of VB before installing VB 5 (including extension packs) ?

user136984
5:49 PM
Time for some music! :D

@cl-netbox I have resinstalled Virtual box v5

@edwardtorvalds did you completely uninstall everything relating earlier versions of VB before installing VB 5 (including extension packs) ?

yes
@cl-netbox I appreciate your kindless, but I have to go now, thanks

@edwardtorvalds okay I think about it and maybe I find a solution until tomorrow ... goodbye ... see you :)
Goodbye everybody ... see you ... :)

anyone play around with Arduino kits?

10:24 PM
@Chan-HoSuh I would if I had the money to afford the parts :P
But all my (meagre) funds go towards other hobbies..
I have too many >.<

@Seth sounds like a nice problem to have :)

well
kinda
anyway, long time no see @Chan-HoSuh. I hope things are going well for you :)

ya, things are alright. Been thinking about how consciousness arises. Where my other sock went. Etc. Same old, same old :)

hehe, that's good then ;)

spent a few days finally going through some details of Godel's Incompleteness Theorem

geez, my Amazon wish list has items from more than 12 years ago ... and a few years ago I expunged it to remove items from the late 90s...

@NathanOsman So yeah.
I had a splitting headache last night. And I finally saw the structure of PHP
Things that that shouldn't connect that do connect somehow.
And as a result... The hell that it is.
PHP is terrible.

most commonly used technologies are. There's a reason for that

anybody play board games? I've had Settlers of Catan on my Amazon wishlist for more than 4 years ... am I missing out?

It's not a bad game.
I like it, but IMO there are better ones out there.

@Seth like.. ?

(I don't actually own it, but my super gamey cousins own just about any game under the sun..)
@Chan-HoSuh Carcassonne and Dominion are some of my favourites.

@Seth Dominion ... sounds very familiar. Is that the WW2 negotiation game that takes several months to play?

@Chan-HoSuh no. You're probably thinking of Diplomacy.

11:08 PM
@Seth oh right, Diplomacy. :)

Don't get me wrong, catan is a great game, it's just not first on my list.

@Seth thanks!
@Seth do any of your hobbies involve going outside? Or is this too personal a question (lol) ?

@Chan-HoSuh yes :)
I'm not super involved in any one activity (too many for that lol) but my interests include biking, hiking, sailing, and bird watching.
I like photography too but I don't have a very good camera nor tons of time for that.

Sailing, always wanted to get into that ... would seem to involve renting or buying a boat though. Both of which sound kinda expensive.

@ByteCommander George would be proud.

11:17 PM
@Chan-HoSuh it can be, yeah :/
I only recently managed to find a way to do it.

Whenever I'm not programming, I'm usually practicing some musical instrument.
(Either my electric guitar or my brother's piano.)

@Chan-HoSuh naw. That came off way weirder than it really is ;)

@NathanOsman very nice... wondered for a minute if you picked one at random :)

I can also play the drums but I don't have a drum set.
I'll fix that when the budget permits.

@NathanOsman there's a guy around New York City I've seen that plays on buckets and various containers. Finally one day I saw him playing with a real band ... and he was still playing on the buckets.
