@GeoMint so what are you trying to do ? I've nothing better to do right now, so i may as well play with some bash code if you need help

@Serg Modify the ping script above to iterate over an array of IPs.

@serg i am creating a bash script about ping the hosts of my university ssh servers
we go in a private room if you want to not spam here :P

@GeoMint meh, sure . . .

but i have already finished it :P

Oh . . .well . . . I guess you don't need my help now, right ?

user139252
7:06 PM
That link posted a few messages ago is exactly what @GeoMint needs.

@ByteCommander @Serg paste.ubuntu.com/13114822
@HeatherBrown i found out what i needed :) you guys helped me a lot
@Serg i don't think so :P but thanks for your interest

@GeoMint Well, if it's only 2 IPs, that's totally fine.

@ByteCommander i will not use the IPs
there are 20+ machines here

Then it will be a longer line...
Would be better to set up an array at the beginning of the script instead of placing all of them in the middle of the actual code.
But that's just a design question.

ok :P
this is the script i will use paste.ubuntu.com/13114857

7:10 PM
As long as it works and you're the only one using it, nobody cares about that.

but it works only inside the university, to prevent hackers :P

o.O?
I guess if you're in that university, the servers there will have local IP addresses anyway, no?

i have ssh into a machine right now
we use another machine to ssh to them
we double ssh :P

user139252
So, you have to SSH into one machine in order to SSH into another?

yeah

user139252
7:13 PM
Like Home Computer > Open-to-internet Uni Computer > Closed-to-internet Uni computer?

yeah

user139252
That's bizarre.

@cl-netbox good night

@A.B. He's long gone...

user139252
G and c are nowhere near each other.

7:14 PM
@HeatherBrown it is called security :P the open-to-internet computer does not let do anything other but ssh

You use agent forwarding?

user139252
But you're still accessing a Uni computer from an outside resource. Once you're on the destination host, can't you essentially do anything you want?

Whenever I see this question title, I think he asks about spamming on his monitors...
0
Q: How can I span my triple monitors so they act as one for gaming?

MikeJeromeI have an nvidia gtx960 and 3 identical monitors. They work great but they each act separately. When gaming, I'd like to be able to span the game across all 3 monitors. I can't find where to enable this in the nvidia settings. I'm on Ubuntu 15.10

@NathanOsman something like that :P
@ByteCommander i found that image at google i.ytimg.com/vi/yNpHjAWKjx4/maxresdefault.jpg
@Serg are you still here?

Now he'd just need another row on top of them.

user139252
7:21 PM
I'm going to get a 27-monitor system and create a cubic display.

@HeatherBrown How do I have to imagine that?

kos
@HeatherBrown That would be pretty cool actually

user139252
@ByteCommander However you wish.

That gives 3 planes with 3x3 monitors each. Now will that become a cube?

kos
Well I've imagined it made of three sides, otherwise it would be rather unuseful. :D

user139252
7:25 PM
Wait... yeah, nevermind.

user139252
I'm going to get a 24-monitor system and create a cubic display.

6 planes with 2x2 monitors then? But where will you get quadratic monitors from?

kos
No, bull, up to five it's fine. What did I eat?

user139252
@ByteCommander Yes, and what do you mean by quadratic monitor?

user136984
@Fabby: So what do you think of my latest Q&A in the series of great but sometimes odd software? :D

7:30 PM
@ByteCommander i used for host in ${hostnames[@]} and now it works :D
with an array called hostnames=( 1 2 3 4 5 ... )

Great!

@HeatherBrown I hope you can fit all four video cards in your machine :P

lol

@HeatherBrown Well, you can't make a cube out of rectangular faces.

kos
By the way they invented the cubic monitor already: image.made-in-china.com/2f0j10UBjQufhzvEVJ/…
:D

7:33 PM
not... really...
Hey, I've got a cool idea!
use 36 quadratic displays, arrange them as a cube surface with 3x3 displays per side and put them on a Rubik's Cube like mechanic with motors so that your monitor-cube can rotate itself.

someone told me that VMWare is better that VirtualBox

Depends what your needs are.

can you tell me more?

Tim
I use VB

@Tim i use vbox too
i opened vmware and it wants an email to work for non-comercial use

Tim
7:44 PM
hmm
well you can just block it if you want tbh but...
cmware doesn't have snapshots

what they mean non-comercial ?
i understand what that means. but what has to do with commercial use?

free for non-comercial use

@GeoMint You may use it at home for free, but not at work.

i don't really get it :P it sounds stupid for me

7:59 PM
anyways :P i will still use VB

user136984
@GeoMint: I think the non-comercial one is the free (limited) version, and the comercial one is the paid for (full) version.

limited?

user136984
@GeoMint: Doesn't have all the features of the full version.

i know the word

And which features not?

8:03 PM
excactly. @A.B.

user136984
@A.B.: I think that the free version only allows you to run VMs, but just VMs, no integration, no settings, nothing, just the ability to install one.

@ParanoidPanda Meh, I think this one is better, but as yours is going to be useful too, I've upvoted anyway! ;-) :P

8:22 PM
o/ @Fabby

user136984
@GeoMint: Well, it it's been a long time since I read about the VMware products...

user136984
And that page won't load for me... :P

user136984
@Fabby: Thanks! :D

user139252
I wish my last name was Null...

user139252
I would name my son Deven.

8:24 PM
@HeatherBrown ahahahah

kos
@Fabby o/
@GeoMint What's that dock? Looks very clean

@kos its gnome's dock

kos
@GeoMint Since when GNOME has a dock?

user139252
8:27 PM
Spoiler alert!

it is preinstalled in ubuntu gnome

kos
@GeoMint Thanks!
Ah, I see. I'm considering switching to GNOME, that's why I asked

A dock in GNOME per default?

@kos i can send you my settings

@GeoMint what version ?

8:29 PM
15.04

kos
@GeoMint Thanks, can you just tell me the pack of icons? I'll get my head around it somehow

Cinnamon?

kos
@GeoMint Thanks! I really like the icons.

user139252
I really like sleep. I think teachers should be given a designated nap hour.

8:33 PM
@kos :) this is my settings

@HeatherBrown :)

@A.B. ubuntugeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/104-150x150.png this is at 14.10 installation time
you can clearly see the dock

BRB

kos
@GeoMint Thanks, also the Window / GTK theme looks nice. I like minimal / clear / uncluttered things.

8:43 PM
:D
@kos that's why i picked it :P
you may have problem with firefox thunderbird and software center themes
@kos what desktop environment you are using currently?

user136984
Oh I do like this!

user136984
@ByteCommander: What do you think of their first album? :)

@ParanoidPanda I don't have the CD, so I didn't listen to it very often... It's different. Every album is different. But not less good.

user136984
Yeah, I like that about them, how each album is so different.

8:56 PM
(Can't listen to it currently, PyCharm eating up all my memory... :P)

user136984
Ok! :D

Doing self evaluation for my job, and it's asking "what are your weaknesses" . . . .um, bacon ?
7

user136984
:D

kos
@GeoMint Unity. I've always liked GNOME more, my only problem with GNOME is the missing launcher and the workspaces arrangement, I prefer Unity's one. But I'm considering switching. When I'm in the mood these day's I'll reinstall Ubuntu GNOME to test it once again

nice :) unity is better in some parts but as you i like more GNOME

kos
8:59 PM
@Serg Who hasn't? :D

@kos I know, right ?
Speaking of bacon, I went to Korean BBQ place yesterday. Mmmmm, yummy

@Serg And smoking... :P
And JAVA!

kos
@GeoMint Extetically IMO there's no comparison :)

@ByteCommander Like I said, I've no issues with java, I've problem with the professor that was teaching java this semester . . . .Anyhow, I dropped that class, so i am freeeeeee, like a biiiiiird

;)
@kos my favorite DE are GNOME and XFCE

9:03 PM
@Serg Just FYI, if you literally translate "free like a bird" to German, that means "outlawed" back in English... (means everybody could have killed you without committing a crime back in the dark medieval ages)

@ByteCommander thank goodness we live in the 21st century . . . .

kos
@GeoMint XFCE / LXDE are bit too minimal for me, after all I have a pretty decent laptop, but I liked the lightness. Another DE I quite liked was Cinnamon

its nice
i like it more on linux mint

kos
@ByteCommander They seem to have the top panel though...maybe they just hide the launcher?

> I've lost my top and left panel on Ubuntu 14.04

kos
9:11 PM
@GeoMint Yea, I used the Minty theme with it. Very nice

I've voted before the picture was edited in @kos

@kos that's why i choosed mint in my username :P

Don't know now...

kos
@GeoMint Right. :D
@ByteCommander I had the missing panel / launcher problem, but...the panel was missing :)
I don't know, maybe it's a variant of the same problem though.

No idea. Good night folks! o/

kos
9:21 PM
Night @ByteCommander

@ByteCommander o/

user136984
@ByteCommander: Goodnight! :)

Remember, Seth's meeting is in half-an-hour.

Tim
@Serg Good Luck!
Night all o/

9:36 PM
goodnight @Tim

@HeatherBrown Care to explain? I don't get it...
@Tim Good night!
Go away before you turn into a pumpkin! ;-)
@kos @A.B. \o

user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, the main reason I created the Q&A was because I found Redshift and thought it was a great app that everyone should know about, so for me it would kind of beat the point if I started getting other answers, because anyone can really see that it's posted to promote a solution for a specific problem, and that I am sort of promoting the solution rather than looking for another, but you can do what you want. :)

@_@ Smart women -> another weakness of mine; My coworker just basically gave me ideas what to put onto the evaluation . . .Aside from being super hot as always

user136984
@Tim: Goodnight! :)

user136984
@Zacharee1: Though I don't want to appear as though I only accept an answer from myself even if another is better. And I understand that what I just said in the message above could have been taken negatively by some, but I did not mean it so. :)

user136984
9:50 PM
@Zacharee1: And maybe I should have used the word "share" rather than "promote".

My membership meeting is in 5 minutes! :D

I'm already there :)
#ubuntu-meeting on Freenode for the curious.
^--- everyone should go here

in other news, who re-did the community site in bold typeface o_O
btw, does anyone know of an IRC client that will let me sort the join/part messages into a different pane/window/something? I like to see them but not in the middle of messages.

user136984
Goodnight! :)

Sure is quiet in the IRC room...
Ah here we go.

10:00 PM
@NathanOsman i joined just to see :P

I see you :P

george_e.

[ SmokeDetector ] Bad keyword in body: What this S.M.A.R.T. information means? by HerrFelix on askubuntu.com

@SmokeDetector err..

I embedded the image.
But I have no idea why that got flagged...

10:06 PM
@Seth :D
@NathanOsman :P

Lurking in IRC, hanging out here, making edits. ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Like a boss.

hi...
Anyone out there?

...not that kind of boss :P

hahaha

...its alive!!!

10:09 PM
lol

How do I make a launcher for Minecraft?

318
Q: How can I edit/create new launcher items in Unity by hand?

IkeWill Unity allow making custom launcher icons from .desktop files or via menu editing system? (Right now the launcher doesn't give the option to "keep in launcher" on all programs. For some programs I use, I have to make custom launchers or .desktop files. For instance, daily blender builds are...

Is that what you mean?

well I mean tlike on the desktop...
Or the unity bar would be fine...
but I have tried a couple of methods with no sucess

you need to make minecraft.jar executable. i had that trouble once

@daBoss well you will have to show us what you've tried ;)
or tell us.. tell us is fine too haha.

10:13 PM
@Seth I don't remember it was like 3 weeks ago...

@daBoss then I guess you'll have to start over ;p

Your you can :-P

whoops, I keep dropping letters today lol.

All I need is a script to run the command to launch it no?

depending on what all is required to launch it, yes.
Scripts work for just about 99% of things.

10:15 PM
java -jar Minecraft.jar
will launch it
if the terminal is in the same directory

You could always make the path to Minecraft.jar absolute.
Then you could launch it from anywhere.

@Seth how can i vote for you?

@GeoMint you can't vote, I'm afraid.

How do I do that?

@GeoMint only the council members get to actually vote.

10:17 PM
But you can voice support.

hmm ok

I forget how many people are on the council.. but not that many ;)

Members get to vote on the council :P

By the way I have go to get me one of these!

whoa, that's freaking awesome!
If only we were all millionaires :P

10:19 PM
@daBoss Meh, you can keep it...
(I don't like boats)

Congratulations to Seth who is now an official Ubuntu Member!
18

The SeaXplorer 100 comes with 2 helos!

@NathanOsman I wanted to post that. *glares at Nathan with all the evil of Hell itself behind the glare*

@Seth CONGRATULATIONS

@ThomasW. I was faster :P

10:20 PM

Congrats, @Seth!!!!!

thanks guys!

@Fabby you may not like boats...but if you had billions of dollars and you did, this would be the one to buy :-D

6 / 4 votes :P

What are we congratulating @Seth for?

10:30 PM
10 mins ago, by Nathan Osman
Congratulations to Seth who is now an official Ubuntu Member!

@ThomasW. Ah, many thanks!
@Seth Congrats!! =)

thank you!
Thanks to @NathanOsman, @ThomasW. and @GeoMint for being there in person too :)

its an honor :)

btw, has anyone else been experiencing issues with chromium lately? It kinda freezes up every once and a while. I have to resize the window to make it work again.

10:35 PM
@Seth isn't that the general behaviour of Chromium?

@Seth firefox :P

@daBoss haha, no.

When did newegg.com redesign their webpage?

@GeoMint I prefer FF in general, but Chromium has some features I use regularly that FF either doesn't have or doesn't do well.. :/
@daBoss looks like it.

@Seth i am curius to know what features

10:39 PM
@GeoMint mainly his automatic porn history deleter...

hahahaha

bookmark syncing is one. I know FF supposedly has this feature, but I could never get it to work. Chromium also lets me manage my sessions across different machines really easily. I can open a tab on one, walk to another and open that tab with just a few clicks. The other one is userscripts. tampermonkey works so much better than greasemonkey.

@Seth I'm always lurking :P
@daBoss Hasn't changed for a couple months now

I haven't changed what?

@Seth that's a good reason

10:56 PM
@daBoss If my uncle had tits she'd be my aunt...
@Seth You're a mod... So now you're a member, does the 20-star PSA still have to remain now that we have a new one? >:-)

@Fabby ah, nope.

Thanks!

Meant to remove that, sorry ;)

@Seth Hey, you should know me better by now then to apologize!

doesn't mean I don't do it :P
