@Serg If you would invest as much time in single girls as you invest in taken ones, you'd have a girlfriend already!
>:-)

@Fabby but but but . . . she was single before T_T
@Fabby anyway, I haz a question

Is she paying for food and drinks while you do the homework???

@Fabby generally, no
We have traditional relationship - the man pays most of the time

Then start the homework, ask for something to eat. If she has nothing, tell her you'll hop to the shop and then come back an hour or two later and just have a good time without the home work!

@Fabby advice, plz . . . .should I drop class and be left without work-study till the next Spring, OR stay in class and get bad grade, but still have the work-study and the money ?

12:04 AM
(too tired to do any hmework )
@Serg What's the disadvantage of the bad grade???

@Fabby em . . . .extra semester in college and Grade Point Average goes down . . . and more money spend on tuition . . . and my parents' disaproval and critique

Do you get more money then the tuition costs?

No
But still some money

drop
What you have is a negative ROI...
don't do any negative ROI ever!
Work, love, study, ...
Doesn't matter: ROI should always be positive...
:/
Sorry!
You asked my opinion and now you've got it!
Did you ask anyone else? @Serg

My turn :) I have something I need to brainstorm.
I'm splitting up log messages for my mail app and I'm having trouble deciding which are "info" messages, which are "warnings", and which are "errors".
Oh, and then there's also "debug".

12:10 AM
@NathanOsman Examples?

@Fabby asked thomas

@Terrance One sec...

@Fabby what's ROI ?

@NathanOsman OK

@Serg Return on Investment///

12:10 AM
@NathanOsman Your sec is up! :P
Just kidding

gottit
OK, gotta go
bye guys !

@Serg What did Thomas say?

1. application starts up and stops (obviously "info" level)
2. message is received in the mail queue ("info" or "debug"?)
3. delivery fails temporarily ("info" or "debug"? it could happen a few times for each message)

Ciao!

@Serg Bye! Have a great time!

12:11 AM
2 info
3 debug
@NathanOsman ----^

@Fabby Okay, thanks.

@NathanOsman I am going to agree with @Fabby on this one.

Okay. I just want to balance "enough information" with "too much information".
I don't want my poor users to log into their server and suddenly find a 200 MB logfile because a network link went down.

:D That would indeed be a good thing...

By that I mean the log would contain 10,000 lines that say "cannot connect to x.y.z" - which is obvious if the network was down :P

12:16 AM
@NathanOsman you could do the following:
if the message logged is the exact same message as the previous one,
don't add it but add:
previous message repeated i time(s)
where i is an integer obviously

Thanks for the idea, but the logging library I'm using doesn't seem to make it easy to get the previous message.
I'd have to add that by hand.
Probably not worth the time.

define "probably not worth the time"

More than a couple hours of work.
...for something unlikely to happen to 99% of users.

is the time you're going to invest be larger then the time the users are going to spend reading duplicate messages???

Depends how popular my app becomes :)

12:20 AM
OK, then forget about it! ;-)
@NathanOsman put it on the roadmap for the next version

I suppose I could do something like that.

then allow end users to vote for what they want done first for the next version...
;-)

Or I could just make an option for logging levels :P

@NathanOsman That should be in there already! :P
>:-) ;-)

Fair enough.

12:27 AM
@Zacharee1 I'm currently in Vilvoorde by the way...
Good night all!

@Fabby Goodnight! =)

@Fabby basically he said it's up to me but he said my thought process leans towards dropping , so recommend dropping

I was just about to press the shutdown button!
:P

I really regret staying in this class so long. The professor is super tough on requirements , grades unreasonably harsh, and gave us no feed back up to last week

Anyway, you asked 2 people and they told you the same thing...
What class is this?

12:31 AM
Computer Science 2, basically java , data structures and algorithms

And always look to the ROI for anything you do...
Java?
Drop it!
algorithms? download an e-book on algorithms
Data structures: take it somewhere else...

I have no problem with the language. Have ebook. It's the professor
Hold on let me find her

ROI again...
AFAI understood the broad is pure negative ROI

Wow.
That page nearly killed my browser.
Opera froze and the CPU shot up to full load.

12:36 AM
@NathanOsman huh ? Works fine in Firefox.

I sense competition

@Serg Anyway, I was able to read enough to get an idea.

@Serg Great teacher. She really takes an interest in her class. Some material is not easy and many students dropped or stopped showing up when it got harder. However in the end it all gets easier. I think she was frustrated with the lack of student participation, which does degrade the entire course, but she presented hard topics and explained them well.

That sounds terrible.

@Serg WOW! Tons of negatives on her to begin with, then one all happy right in the middle of them all.

12:38 AM
Anyone know C++?

I do.

Can you take a look at this and see if, keeping the 'for' loop, the result can be made more efficiently?

Sure.

Thanks

@Zacharee1 Use a switch statement

12:39 AM
The first thing I'd suggest is a switch() statement instead of the ifs.
@RPiAwesomeness ah, you beat me :P

@Zacharee1 Use switch

@NathanOsman how does that work?

Haha! I have bested the master!

@Zacharee1 I'll show you...

@RPiAwesomeness lol

12:40 AM
(and I don't know any C++)
Just C

@Fabby (Neither do I) :p

@Fabby that reviewer must have been professional developer or magically read her mind

switch(x) {
case 5:
    doSomething();
    break;
case 4:
    doSomething();
    break;
//...
}

ohh
hmm

@Serg I was going to say: that must have been herself!!!

12:41 AM
@seth Hmm, how do I edit your testimonial page?

I'll try it out

I'm off!

@chaskes You'll need an account on the Ubuntu wiki to edit the page.
@Fabby Goodnight.

I thought I had one and I'm logged in, but I'll doublecheck that.
thx

Does curl come installed by default?

12:42 AM
o/ @all

Hello @KGIII

\o
Thanks for the 'switch' tip, guys!
Way faster

I wish Python had a switch statement :P

@Fabby well, i already signed up for retaking that class with different prof. Anyone but her is good
Meanwhile, my girl is still not answering

12:46 AM
@NathanOsman Cool

libcurl3-gnutls:amd64 is installed.
I can't remember if that one provides the curl command though.
Hmm... I'm still not sure that's the correct list...

Hello guys, I hope you're doing fine

@Lucio o/

Should I pay godaddy to hide private data for a domain? Asking for a friend

It really depends. If you ever need to prove that you own a domain, you'll need to keep the data public.
But if that isn't ever going to be a problem, then go ahead and hide it.

12:52 AM
It is just a fun side project.

@RPiAwesomeness So it does seem to be included in the desktop installer.

Does anyone know if there's an installer for Chromium on Windows?
I can't find it if there is

Hmm...

@Zacharee1 Yeah, but that's possibly buggy

12:55 AM
It appears so @RPiAwesomeness - I just search for Chromium and Windows. :/ I... Umm... I don't actually have anything handy with Windows on it.

That's the Chromium for Windows

Isn't installing Chrome an option?
You can disable all of the Google stuff I think.

Yeah, I was just curious

Wait no - that's chrome...

Yeah, Chromium is what Chrome is based off of. It's fine

@hbdgaf care to answer the above question, please :)

@NathanOsman I found the edit link. thanks. First time I've edited the wiki. I guess I need to start doing more of that for when I apply. :)

This site looks interesting IF you trust them. chromium.woolyss.com

@KGIII That's where I got the link above

@Zacharee1 Heh, neat... I'm actually poking at the site now just to see what they're about.

1:00 AM
They seem trustworthy, since they lead to the actual download

They have burger time - they must be okay.

...

And definitely within my price range
Ah. Bad quality ... never mind :P

Q: What is Warning failed to connect to lvmetad mean and how to fix it?

Henry HugginsMy Ubuntu Laptop does not booting to the desktop it pause on start up saying Warning failed to connect to lvmetad how to fix the problem it happened after I installed gnome.

@RPiAwesomeness Have you seen the new System76 that came out today?

1:12 AM
@chaskes I didn't

I think they may be the same as the person I linked to in the comments. Similar verbiage in use.

Looking it up now

system76.com/laptops/lemur Starts a little higher but looks great

I tried building a decent one there and couldn't get it below $2000 :P

I would love a system76, but I'm fairly limited in budget and they tend to be expensive :/

1:13 AM
This goes up to i7 with 16 for under $1000
If you don't mind a tradition hdd
This one wont ship until the end of the month, so I might be able to save up.

I'm looking at a $500-$600 budget :/
Er ... @NathanOsman any idea:

@RPiAwesomeness pcpartpicker.com

@Zacharee1 I'm getting a laptop, not a desktop, so PCPartPicker isn't really that helpful

ah

@RPiAwesomeness O_o

1:16 AM
Ooh, good luck then

@RPiAwesomeness Well, the stock i3 is 599...

Actually, that looks similar to the errors from the stacking bug.

@chaskes Yeah, but that's 4GB RAM + a 500GB HDD. Not so amazing
I really want to have 6-8GB

@RPiAwesomeness you must have 8 GB of RAM.
Even at the cost of CPU speed and disk space.

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah, if you can afford to take it up to 8 or 16 the i3 is worth it. Just a thought.

1:17 AM
RAM is going to be your biggest pain point.

An i5 is still very respectable.

You can live with a lower-end CPU easier than low RAM

^--- yup

Definitely. I'm not really looking at anything more than an i7/A8-A10

1:18 AM
Do you need discrete graphics?

Looks decent

The Z50 is definitely a good choice

@NathanOsman I wouldn't mind them, but since I really only do stuff like CS:GO & MC

I'm not sure you want to buy from Lenovo...

@NathanOsman why not?

1:19 AM
Aren't they the ones that loaded malware onto their laptops?

If you don't mind plastic

@NathanOsman That is true, forgot about that

What screen size do you want?

1:20 AM
@Zacharee1 way beyond my budget
I honestly don't care. Most likely 15"

oh right
oops

You can get a decent machine for $500 with an i5, integrated graphics, and 8 GB of RAM.
At least, up here you can.
And your dollar is worth even more than ours :P

Drive size?

Probably a 500 GB mechanical drive.
But that can always be upgraded later.

No @RPiAwesomeness
What drive size are you looking for?

1:21 AM
Let me see what I can find...
Do you have a preferred brand?

@Zacharee1 At least 500GB

OK

I'm somewhat partial to Dell right now :)

@NathanOsman Nope. I've had good experiences with Toshibas (my current laptop is 8 yrs old & it's still chugging ... with some help) but I don't really care
Just not razer

@RPiAwesomeness do you care about weight at all, and what processor at least?

1:23 AM
@Zacharee1 Weight, no. Processor, I'd like at least an AMD A8+ or i5.

OK
@RPiAwesomeness amazon.com/s/…
Search I compiled
See what you like

That top one actually looks pretty decent

Meh, I don't have Prime anyways

How about that one?

1:26 AM
Decent...don't like the 5400RPM HDD though

It has a Pentium processor :P

Seems to be a common theme :P
5400 RPM HDDs that is

Why wouldn't you want that? the 7200s just get really hot in laptops
@NathanOsman I honestly can't believe those are still around

It's slow

Not really

1:27 AM
This looks pretty good if you don't mind refurbished: bestbuy.com/site/…

Bu, but Windows 8.1 :p

> "Battery Life 14.5 hours"
Not sure I believe that...

yikes
4.5 maybe
14.5? no

Yeah, our netbook with an Atom processor only gets about 6 hours.

That screen alone will drain rapidly.

1:31 AM
AHA!
^--- best deal I've seen yet

@NathanOsman That is actually decent specs too.

> "100GB Ethernet provides reliable wired data connection"
Who writes this stuff?

@NathanOsman low res screen, 5400rpm drive, integrated graphics

@NathanOsman I can't find that for the US :(

Lemme see what I can do...

1:33 AM
@NathanOsman LOL too funny! Under the specs I see 10/100

Basically, if it can run MC decently (with mods occasionally) and possibly CS:GO, as well as playback HD video/multitask well I'm happy.
That makes a lot of things an option, and I'm not picky about having stuff be super new/non-refurbished

I found a refurbished one... bestbuy.com/site/…

@RPiAwesomeness then stay away from integrated graphics

There is nothing wrong with 5400rpm mechanical drives. I put a WD 1TB in my MacBook and it runs great! store.westerndigital.com/store/wdus/en_US/pd/ThemeID.21986300/…

> "Ethernet 10/100 Fast"
10/100 is not "fast".

1:35 AM
That's just it @Zacharee1, having discrete graphics adds a fair chunk to the cost :/

@NathanOsman Ethernet Technology: Fast Ethernet
@RPiAwesomeness The ASUS laptops in the search are pretty cheap and they have AMD graphics

@RPiAwesomeness At least with Intel you get something pretty stable.

I've had no linux trouble on 2 asus with intel graphics

My biggest issue with Intel graphics is that they take forever to update their drivers
So you get crap performance unless you're on an LTS release

heh

1:37 AM
The AMD APU processors have a combined CPU+GPU.
No idea if they make mobile ones though.

Took the AMD CPU option out
My dad actually has a Dell 17R and it's 6lbs, but pretty nice
What the hell?

I'm fine with AMD, just so long as it has OpenGL 2.0+ support

I have an N5110.

There
It's the one you said looked good

Huh, that's not bad. 1TB SSHD installed on the used one

1:40 AM
2GG VRAM
yeah

I'm seriously considering that

Just remember it's 6lbs

@NathanOsman You have an AMD card, how bad were the drivers?
@Zacharee1 Pshaw, my current one is at least that

This is the one that sits on my desk at work. It is a good laptop by Dell.

I do on my desktop.
The open-source drivers are flawless.

1:40 AM
Whoa 6.2 actually

But they don't do OpenCL.

Have you dealt with Radeon drivers at all?

@Terrance that's the laptop my school uses
@RPiAwesomeness :p

The Catalyst drivers are a bit faster and support more but they're a little bit buggy. Not too bad though.

@RPiAwesomeness AMD is much more stable on Ubuntu than NVIDIA
And is pretty stable anyway

1:41 AM
I stick with the open-source ones most of the time though.

@NathanOsman @RPiAwesomeness has to game though

I can't even remember the last time I had the slightest problem with them.

eh, depends on the exact card in my experience.

Well, not have to

@Zacharee1 Works great, no issues with it, and the battery lasts a good chunk of my day when working out in the data center itself. =)

1:42 AM
They work not too bad for gaming TBH.
@Seth That's true.

It's just a nicety. If I really want to game I'll use my desktop

@chaskes Looks like you figured it out :)

heh

It's not the most intuitive system, that's for sure. Thank you for the kind words :)

@Seth did you approve my tag wiki edit for hibernarnation?

1:42 AM
I think most recent AMD cards are fairly well supported.

@Zacharee1 no.

@Zacharee1 The tag was deleted.

@NathanOsman AMD is great on Ubuntu

And it was :P

@NathanOsman aww
:p
I figured it would be

1:43 AM
Anyway, supper. AFK.

Time to do the driving thing! Have fun all! :D

@Terrance have fun (?)
I've been shopping for @RPiAwesomeness instead of doing homework :p

@Zacharee1 :)

Way more fun

1:45 AM
Urgh. I tried to post that link too many times and now the chat is making me wait so long between messages
brb
Ok
Nope. Didn't help

Goodness. This is way more complicated than I remember building my desktop being...

Finding a laptop? Yep

Then again, I could pick and choose each individual part instead of having to find the perfect combo :P

yeah
You can build a laptop, but it would be pretty expensive

Do you have a public budget @RPiAwesomeness?

1:48 AM
Yeah, it's not really worth it to build a custom laptop
@Seth $300-$600, but preferably on the lower side

This is what I originally wanted to get, but it ended up falling too far outside my budget:
That particular listing is outside yours too looks like, but sometimes you can get it cheaper.

Looks really nice, but yeah. A bit too much :/
Then again, I technically have ~$1300 to work with, but I really don't want to cut into that 1k too much (saving for a car)

nice.

@Seth Yeah, First time editing a wiki page and the edit button wasn't obvious (at least I had trouble finding it).

I've got a job, but haven't been working recently because they haven't needed me

1:51 AM
@chaskes yeah, the wiki system the ubuntu wiki uses is... less than intuitive.
@RPiAwesomeness Getting an i7 for ~$600 isn't going to be easy if you want new..

My biggest problem with all these laptop finder thingies is that they qualify "gaming" as AAA titles or 60 FPS on High. I just want to be able to do CS:GO & MC
@Seth I'm just fine with an i5

@RPiAwesomeness search business laptop then
Speaking of laptops, does anyone know where I could get a cheap mSATA SSD?

Amazon?

Recommendations

ah. I've never had a machine that supported it so.. :/

1:55 AM
Dual-core...hrm. How big of a difference does a quad-core make. I'm assuming a lot

It does

integrated graphics

no dedicated graphics though
