kos
12:00 AM
@NathanOsman Ok. You mentioned a problem and thought that was the not intended part :D

Ah, okay. I misunderstood what you were saying.

kos
@Mateo That's hilarious! I've seen it in with 200 different captions I think!

yeah, a fake subtitle vid, but fits

@terdon how did you find loop in NM service? it is a compiled code

@edwardtorvalds Compiled code comes from source code.

12:02 AM
@Mateo dat laugh

haha
@NathanOsman terdon seems to show a bash script and not C :)

Where?

@edwardtorvalds no, not always... :P This is Free software after all!µ

@edwardtorvalds free software: you can find the source code!

12:06 AM
yes

@edwardtorvalds That's not Bash. That looks like C.

This is not Microsoft!!!

Switch statements in Bash are much uglier than that.

@NathanOsman I am sure it is bash,

12:06 AM
It's not Bash.

It's not bash.
Bash's case is not like that either :)

looks pretty java-ish to me

-.-

so experts ask me to write services in C and not bash...
LOL java? guess all languages you can :)

@edwardtorvalds not ask, tell!

12:07 AM
^_^'''' yeah, that was AWKward ( all puns intended )

This is what switch statements look like in Bash:
case $thing in
  1)
    dostuff
    ;;
  2)
    dootherstuff
    ;;
  *)
    dontdoanything
    ;;
esac

@Fabby haha, I am not an english man

Go is a great language to write daemons or services in.

kos
@edwardtorvalds My bet is C++ or Java, as C doesn't have booleans

12:08 AM
@edwardtorvalds I just searched the source code for while.

@edwardtorvalds I know... By the way: you still have to accept and upvote my answer as it seems to be helping you!!! :P :P :P

And no, that was most certainly not bash!

@Fabby dont mind you are bounty hunter :)

@kos That's not really a large problem - C programmers just use the convention "0 is false; everything else is true".

@kos it does! They're just very big booleans!

12:09 AM
haha

They often have:
#define FALSE 0
#define TRUE  1

@Fabby BOOLEANS

askUbuntu where all scientists debat LOL

@terdon I used bit-manipulation in C: 1 byte = 8 booleans! CC: @kos

/me listening to nightcore, it's all your fault @hbdgaf

12:12 AM
can services do something before they are killed/stopped, for example, jjust before shutdown or reboot?

kos
@NathanOsman Indeed, just pointing out that since that's not a valid code unless you define TRUE first, that's probably C++ or Java, although for the sake of the example that matters 0 :D
@Fabby What do you mean exactly?

@kos That's C.

@kos like network masks in an IP address...

guys.. ?

@kos so 11110000 has four true and four false bits

12:13 AM
what did one service said to another?

@kos C has booleans oO , i think it's bool keyword

@edwardtorvalds nothing

@Fabby we all are running and still at same place...

@Serg it's stored as a byte

@Serg No, C doesn't have a native boolean type.

12:14 AM
@edwardtorvalds :D Good one!

@NathanOsman hmmm, alright . . .but that code still could be C as they could do # define TRUE = 1
been a while since i coded in C

@Serg yes, but it's not a true boolean

Right, C doesn't have a native boolean type but there are lots of conventions for storing booleans.

a true boolean only takes 1 bit

priorities people, priorities

12:15 AM
@Fabby Well... C++ has a native boolean type and it uses more than one bit, I'm afraid.

@edwardtorvalds hey, we're teaching Serg C like we're teaching you about compilers/interpreters and batch scripts/services!!! :P

haha :D

kos
@Fabby That I'm afraid doesn't help, don't know nothing about that stuff. :D

12:16 AM
can services do something before they are killed/stopped, for example, just before shutdown or reboot?

@Fabby I've studied C, I just haven't polished my knowledge in a while

So C does have a boolean type?

@NathanOsman nah, not really

@Fabby my mom will kill me if she finds out I am still awake

Can any of the mods kick @edwardtorvalds out of the chat room?

12:17 AM
BYE

Otherwise he's going to be in trouble with his mom!
@edwardtorvalds good night!
SLEEP!!!!!
(important sleep at your age)
Well, to be honest: at my age too!
:D
@kos So do you know what a bit is?

kos
@edwardtorvalds o/

(and a byte)
>:-)

kos
@Fabby I've heard of them, but never really examined in depth

so what I'm talking about is to store 8 bits in one byte
or: 8 booleans in one byte!
that's it!

kos
12:20 AM
Ah got you. That sounds like the best way by the way

so you can have true booleans in c, it's just harder then in C++ who does all of that for you behind the screens
actually: the only way! :D
I need a SMOKE!
BRB

kos
@Fabby Did you write software for embedded systems or something or are you just very dutiful? I've never seen one going further typedef unsigned short int bool

@kos I used to write codified databases...
Forgotten technology
(and blindingly fast)
you cram as much data as you can into one byte: less disk access...
>:-)

So did we all just forget about Tox?
How does one start Tox after installing it in Ubuntu?

kos
12:36 AM
@Fabby Right.

@Zacharee1 Which tox did you install?

kos
@Zacharee1 It should be in the dash, isn't it?

@Fabby sudo apt-get install tox
Wrong one?

I dunno, I've got qtox....
lemme look
@Zacharee1 what repository???

main

12:39 AM
apt-cache search tox
detox - utility to replace problematic characters in filenames
fotoxx - easy-to-use digital photo editor
ipe5toxml - converts Ipe5 figures to an XML file readable by Ipe
libsqlite3-mod-blobtoxy - SQLite3 extension module for read-only BLOB to X/Y mapping
libwoodstox-java - High-performance XML processor
python-tox - virtualenv-based automation of test activities
qtox - The best Tox client.
qtox-qt5.4.2 - The best Tox client.
qtox-unity - The best Tox client.
toxic - Command-line client for Tox.
there's no "tox"

Don't see qtox
15.10?

nope... It's in a separate repository...
there's a question on the site how to install qtox-unity...

Ah, thanks!

RIP star wall

It's not that bad.

12:48 AM
No, it has definitely been worse

haha, @RPiAwesomeness did you see my fifo demo ;)

@Mateo No!

see the star wall

So what is fifo?

it is a named pipe, you can put things into it the read the file live

12:52 AM
In computing, a named pipe (also known as a FIFO for its behavior) is an extension to the traditional pipe concept on Unix and Unix-like systems, and is one of the methods of inter-process communication (IPC). The concept is also found in OS/2 and Microsoft Windows, although the semantics differ substantially. A traditional pipe is "unnamed" and lasts only as long as the process. A named pipe, however, can last as long as the system is up, beyond the life of the process. It can be deleted if no longer used. Usually a named pipe appears as a file, and generally processes attach to it for inter-process...

Oh cool

Everything I install seems to want to uninstall Chrome

Hrm...power of suggestion? :P

@ByteCommander ROTFL!

kos
@Seth I was looking to your profile, isn't that Alice in Wonderland by the way?

1:00 AM
@kos yes, yes it is. Can't believe I never noticed that >.>

kos
@Seth :D

@Seth 'cause it sounds Alice 'n Wonderland and your brain turned 'n into and.

1:21 AM
@Seth that's not an iguana

@Seth And I always assumed you meant the pr0n movie! >:-)

And then there's @Fabby

I'm evil: I know...
(sometimes)

Up that to often :p
Every other comment from you is sarcastic

@Fabby -.-

1:33 AM
lol, you should put from the book now...

@Seth not responding to my troll...

@Zacharee1 Yeah, but it makes people smile!

Tru dat

@Fabby but it's a dupe..?

1:39 AM
No it's not!

Well how will upvotes help?

@chili555: You're out resident expert: Can you have a look at this poor schmuck?
@Zacharee1 sorry!
REOPEN votes...

What?
Oh

not UPvotes

Well then, no
Need 900 more rep for that
So unless you want to give me 90 upvotes that I can use before they're recognized as serial voting, there's nothing I can do :p

kos
1:43 AM
@Fabby Voted to reopen. Why was that even closed?

@kos ask @ParanoidPanda that

I have just seen Windows 10. :/

@KGIII better than 8

And I am returned from the dead (or busy) at least for now.

Almost as good as 7, but still not there

1:44 AM
@kos Because he mentioned another question... Herd mentality!

lol

@Zacharee1 True. I've seen that one. I never used it on my own system but I've seen it.

@KGIII 7?

8

@seth ever see Dreamchild

kos
1:45 AM
@Fabby Yep, likely.

@KGIII If you haven't had Windows 7 you need to get it
Oh

@KGIII The zombie apocalypse has started! Get out the ammo and shoot these undead!

Ew, 8

>:-)

Oh I have 7.

1:46 AM
@Mateo hmm, nope. Is it a sequel?

@Fabby shut up pls ;p
@KGIII bonissimo :p

LOL I'll just go north @Fabby - The undead will freeze and I'll be safe. No shooting needed.

@KGIII you're the undead

@Zacharee1 As long as it's not a mod telling me to shut up, I'm continuing to talk! ;-) >:-)

@Fabby Don't shut up!

1:47 AM
Oh? Damn it... What'd I do now?

@Fabby >:/

ladiyadiyaa! :D ;-)

lol
sigh

@Zacharee1 "Don't say him shut up!"

@xiaodongjie Don't tell him...

1:48 AM
@Fabby here we go again...

to say something

@xiaodongjie sarcasm

to tell a story
@xiaodongjie How are you today?

@Fabby I'm fine, and you?

still not converted to GPL???
;-)
Job interview tomorrow!
(I'm good!)

1:48 AM
@xiaodongjie 1024 rep. How octal

Actually: later today: I should go to bed!

@Zacharee1 yes, it's correct 1K

Buenos dia de la muertos.

Feliz* @KGIII

@KGIII Yup, here too!

1:49 AM
@Seth sort of like Finding Neverland

(at least until 3 hours or so ago)

Feliz Dia de los Muertos

That works.

@Zacharee1 English, Hebrew, Spanish... Any more???

I finally have all of the belongings of the missus loaded into a moving truck.

1:50 AM
@Fabby 1:50 for you? Go to bed

@Mateo I watch practically 0 TV/movies. (practically) so I don't know anything about that one either :P

@Fabby What?

@Zacharee1 02:50

Q: Probably broken laptop

FulaphexA friend of mine has a laptop, that sometimes when trying to boot up happens to have a kernel panic. The problem is, that it has been happening to her and she returned the laptop a while ago to be repaired by producer. It helped for a couple of weeks, but now it is back. Laptop also randomly hang...

@Fabby Oh DST
right

1:51 AM
My friend should be here tonight to drive it back to Maine and put it into my house for me.

@Zacharee1 It's a joke (but not a good one apparently)

confused

Zacharee is a typical Jewish name, and obviously you speak English, so
when you posted a correction to KGIII's Spanish

Oh, well I am Jewish(ish :D)

I said: English, Hebrew and Spanish... Any more???

1:52 AM
@Fabby I speak English
@Fabby Ich Spreche Deutsch

@Seth so, make a story about writing the story and people that inspired and do parallel fictional stuff spliced in

@Fabby Hablo espanol
(sin acentos)

@Zacharee1 Ja, ich auch...
Io no habla Español!

@Fabby Aber Ich habe vergessen viel

Io parlo l'Itaiano!

1:53 AM
Gah. This is a seriously issue with Ubuntu/Unity/LightDM (or whatever it is). Stupid thing will have a full screen app freeze & lock up input.

@Fabby obviamente no

@Zacharee1 Ich habe viel vergessen!

Killing it via sudo killall in TTY 1 just sends it to a black screen

At least you remembered that annoying second verb thing @Fabby

Es ist zeit 25 Jahre her das ich Deutsch gesprochen und geschrieben habe!
(I forgot a lot in 25 years...)
A language is definitely not like riding a bike: if you don't practice, you forget!

1:55 AM
@Fabby k den

>:-)
OK!
I'm off!
Good night all!
(including @GeorgetheDev! Wherever you are!)

night! @Fabby

kos
Goedenacht @Fabby!
