@ParanoidPanda anything on f.lux?

12:28 AM
@Oli permit me to say that there are times I want to hit you for being specific. Reread my first freaking sentence: "You cannot make the first master Apache process start as non-root for the master process in a sane way." (emphasis mine)
@Oli your argument says I say it outright can't, I didn't say that, I said it can't be done in a sane way.

Oli
I did it in 4 lines.

You can't do it without sending the server to the asylum.

I'm permitted to have my opinion. You still get an upvote, but you get a lashing from me about not analyzing entire clauses and statements as a whole before rendering judgement on what one is trying to say in their sentence.

That's all I have to say
I'm going to go find coffee, I haven't had enough so it's making me irritable

You can give the "in a sane way" get-out on any software-related answer. *Can I play Doom on kcalc?* Not in a sane way, but you could spend a few months rewriting it to have a Doom component. Anything is possible.

That's why I read that as "No you can't do that, stop being silly"

Out of curiosity, is it possible to configure the kernel to allow a non-privileged application to listen on a privileged port?
Now that would not be "sane" but I'd be curios to know if it is indeed possible.

I am pretty sure you can do exactly that with rump (I think) on NetBSD @NathanOsman but that's not really an answer - I'm just making conversation, sort of.

Oli
@NathanOsman Yeah, by path
That's the basis of my answer

Oh, I didn't see your answer.
starts reading...
Yeah, Docker would be his best option.

Oli
IT department employees that has heard of Apache would be a good start ;)

12:42 AM
^--- this
I've got a fairly complex setup for the group of websites I run. I've got nginx proxying virtually everything and behind nginx, I've got an assortment of Docker containers, local scripts, and FastCGI processes.
The concept of "root" is blurred a bit in Docker because "root" in the container doesn't necessarily translate to "root" on the host.

Ah - I finally found said question.
Being a wishy-washy sort, tonight, you both get votes. nods

1:00 AM
@Fabby this.
but no stars because this is the Ubuntu room, not the politics one ;p

Anyone know why the code tags don't work in ordered lists? See: askubuntu.com/questions/694067/… for an example.

why are you using HTML?

Q: Linux networking in VM ware

nishanth babuI have a doubt in Linux networking in VM ware. I have VM ware and i installed three Cent OS in them. I would like to network them all in a local LAN in VM ware itself. One among these three VM machine is made as server. This server have to contact outside the LAN. In physical systems we will...

It might not be the prettiest but, damn it, it's kind of pretty. Yes, yes I was that bored.

no, I mean for the list.

1:31 AM
It looked nice and was easy to follow. And, well, to play with the feature. :D (You're expecting a better reason, right? I don't actually have one.)

@KGIII they do work.. I don't see it not working there. Can you be more specific?
also, really weird. bzr builddeb is building my package with nothing but the changlog, control file, and README o_O

Where it say sudo apt-get update (as an example) - I put the sudo .... in there and it just showed the ` itself instead of the gray background like normal code.
Alright, chat is eating some of it. I used the ` around the commands.
It did not show so I took them out.

huh, worked for me..
(both backticks and single line)

This happens with <li>text 'code <-- Not closing it to stop chat from eating it.
Hmm... It was eating it - lemme try to edit it and see what happens.
Notice where the PPA is instructed to be installed? The bat quotes around that do not seem to work.
@Seth I see - extra spaces. I'll finish editing it now that I see how.
Thanks!

np :)

1:39 AM
Wait no - you took out my pretty formatting! :D
LOL All good, I'd rather it "work" than be pretty.
Cool. I can just use a hyphen instead of HTML. Nice, thanks again @Seth!

@Seth the three most important files for building a DEB are the changelog, control, and rules files.
I don't understand how it could work without all three of those.
The changelog has the version, the control file has the dependencies and package names, and the rules file dictates how the package is built.
(Not to say you won't get warnings and complaints if some of the other files are missing. Just that those are the absolute bare minimum required files.)

I'm not even sure what to say for that

@NathanOsman Looks perfectly fine to me. No errors, nothing. All the files are there it's just none of the actual source is built into the .deb file after the build command.

@Seth So...I'm checking a couple 'o things, put in man apt and it says No manual entry for apt. It took an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize in Fedora right now.

haha
Can't say I haven't done similarly xD
but man, I can't figure out why builddeb thinks I don't want any of the actual source in my .deb file..

2:03 AM
Take a break from it and you'll see it when you get back. :)

@Seth Probably because rules is missing :P
Oh wait - we're not talking about debuild?
Ah, in that case I don't have any idea what's going on.

I'm getting to the point of just doing it the manual way, yes.

Yup, that's him.

LOL I just linked another person to it - they want to open the terminal when a USB drive is inserted and Google found Seth for me.

2:13 AM
haha
grr. packaging isn't supposed to be plain weird.

@KGIII At least it wasn't like what happened to me the other night where I needed something and Google found myself for me :P

@NathanOsman I can understand that. I'm pretty forgetful so finding stuff I've done before isn't too unusual. I blame it on age but, really, I just get distracted quickly and things just get forgotten.

Yeah.

2:30 AM
Oh, yeah. Half the time I half to review my old answers before I can make a new answer. Who can remember all the quirky details you research for some of this.

2:53 AM
well. I give up.
None of the packages are building right.
I'll try again tomorrow.

@kgill That's not going to work. He needs to set xdg-mime default x-terminal-emulator inode/directory (or similar, that's off the top of my head) to open the terminal when he inserts a usb. Although to open it in the right directory, he'll need to run a script with something like danplanet.com/blog/2007/11/11/… (thx @hbdgaf for the link)

No? Hmm... Let me take a gander - I am going to have to spin a new VM up for this, I think.

@KGIII Well, you could make it work that way if he plugs in the usb at least once first to put the script on the usb itself.
But in that case it's also a duplicate :)

3:25 AM
LOL I didn't find a dupe. I told him to feel free to join chat - I'm going to test this in a VM.

There's several potential dupes actually, but I'm sure there's plenty of room for a new answer.

I'd like to submit an entry for longest package name: golang-github-hectane-go-nonblockingchan-dev

Did you get cut off?

@JourneymanGeek No, but it's my best attempt so far :P

...non-blocking-changhrhgkrhgkrhgkr-dev?

3:37 AM
Okay, well, yeah - if I was making up a name it could be infinitely long.
But this is based on Debian naming conventions and the name of the upstream project.

E: Build-Depends dependency for golang-github-hectane-go-nonblockingchan cannot be satisfied because candidate version of package golang-github-hectane-go-attest-dev can't satisfy version requirements
Wait - what?
The dependency is listed as golang-github-hectane-go-attest-dev (>= 0.1.1).
And the repository has the package golang-github-hectane-go-attest-dev_0.1.1-0~201511050502~ubuntu16.04.1_all.deb‌.
Methinks 0.1.1-0~201511050502~ubuntu16.04.1 is indeed >= 0.1.1
Apparently it isn't!

@A.B. morning.
APT has a bizarre sorting order for version numbers.
0.1.1-0~201511050502~ubuntu16.04.1
0.1.1
0.1.1-0
0.1.1-1~2015
0.1.1-1ppa1
0.1.1+1
You can call that a lot of things - but ASCII order ain't one of them.

@Fabby hmm I do have an... interesting view of this. If I'm honest, I could see myself working in one of these places - GCHQ or general government mathematics etc. Or Army / RAF computer science.
But yes I get that government monitoring is a controversial subject.
I never have liked that quote. I'm not sure why the liberty is essential (I mean I live here, it's the governments job to keep me safe - so they should do what is needed) and I don't see how the safety is temporary...

@Seth Yeah, but this is even more important then Ubuntu! It's about life and freedom!

An ex-developer, ex-systems engineer, ex-network engineer, ex-DBA, ex-IT Auditor and looking for a job as an IT Manager or Project Manager (or worse)
(So I'm the manager you can't fool)
@Tim The safety is temporary as another insecurity will come up for which more liberties will have to be taken away.
Another one you won't like then is:
The road to hell is paved by good intentions!

@A.B. Good morning my friend ! :)

10:33 AM
alright, im really getting freaked out now. I just installed google authenticator for ssh based upon digital oceans tutorial, which is basically the same as @hg8 suggested (just that it uses neno instead of vim. pewwwww), i configured everything, have my key in my google auth, restarted the ssh service, even restarted the complete server, but it's still not asking for the auth code
could it be that a different ssh server is handling my login at the moment? so that all my configuration isn't even being read?

hello guys. he didn't accepted the answer. askubuntu.com/q/693153/228051 what happens now?

10:45 AM
LOL @SmokeDetector is a bot :P

hg8
@GeoMint That would be a lot of work for a real person =)

:)

11:02 AM
@danielwinter If it's on digitalocean, you can log in using the console in your control panel

nope the server is on hetzner
but DO provide the best tutorials imho

ah
hetzner has a browser based console as well but it's terrible...

haha
well i'm currently thinking about moving my server
so renting a new one and transferring all the data onto the new one

I've moved all of my stuff from hetzner to digitalocean.
so much nicer....

mhm this might be too expensive for me to be honest
i have 2 small droplets for varys.io and a webshop and I enjoy DO
but I use it also for seafile and 2 game servers, which use quite a lot of space and cpu

11:05 AM
I don't know what your use case is. I also like these guys scaleway.com
oh okay don't go to scaleway to host a game server

haha
my current server is pretty damn cheap at least

to find out what ssh daemons are running, type ` ps aux | grep "[s]shd"`

core i3770K (8*3.3ghz) with 32gigs of ram and 2 3tb hard drives for 44€ is quite nice.
ah k

And you should see one /usr/sbin/sshd, one danielwinter [priv], and one danielwinter@pts1337

mhm looks usual:
root 1194 0.0 0.0 26036 2360 ? Ss 11:26 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -D
root 5199 0.0 0.0 28596 2680 ? Ss 11:44 0:00 sshd: root@pts/0

11:08 AM
yes that's fine.
You probably just missed something configuring pam I'd guess

I never changed it though, and the config file looked good to me. strange. would you say that SSD is a must for servers these days?
on the productive side I mainly run php projects using laravel and some node stuff. I know that especially node is depenend on opening hundreds of files, but I never had any issues so far and my sites are pretty responsive

I wouldn't say it's a must. But it makes a big difference if you use databases like Postgres or MongoDB for example

kos
@cl-netbox Why is it necessary to reinstall the Windows boot loader here? Won't installing GRUB overwrite it and consequentially superseed it (i.e. fixing it is unuseful)? askubuntu.com/a/694247/380067

@danielwinter In your node projects, all those hundreds of files will only be read once so it doesn't matter.
php with fast-cgi too
I guess if you have small amounts of data, go with SSDs (why not?) and if you have large amounts of data, go with spinning disks

@danielwinter nah. not a must. RAM is still more important. We use ssd just for the booting and a big raid array for the databases.

11:21 AM
alright, thanks for clearing this.

@kos because of this comment of OP under the other answer : I tried but when I select windows 10, it shows only ubuntu MATE option but when I select this it get's me an error. - just to get sure ... he is a 1 rep user ... :)

and memory is still the thing you get the least on digitalocean.. hm

@danielwinter GCE <3 cheap, stable and flexibel

google compute engine?

yes

11:31 AM
hm
I'm currently thinking about splitting everything up

Our software runs on Ubuntu inside GCEs for almost most of our clients (some on 1 GCE, some have their own GCE or even more than 1).
we have a client that uses a GCE in China, the US and in Europe for the branches in those continents.
and we have 1 GCE that holds about 300 clients (so they are all using the same software )

I don't really need seafile on my own server, so I could transfer that to a dropbox pro account. I could also drop the counterstrike server, so that would be gone as well, minecraft on a single scaleway server for 2,99€, a single scaleway machine for gitlab / sentry / jira and then something for my websites.. that would result in 16€ so far, leaves up to 24€ / month for a pure webserver.
I can imagine that GCE or even AWS would be cheap as well, but damn.. they're pricing is so hard for a little freelancer that just wants some sites online. Not that it would be expensive, but you basically have no idea how much that would cost :D

11:50 AM
ok, if i see that correctly I would get 1 virtual cpu, 2gb ram, 100gb storage and 2gb sql instance for 122$. that's quite a lot. (GCE)

0_0
That sounds massively pricy.

it might be cheap if u plan to scale a lot
but for a usual web server thats way too much

@StefanoPalazzo Can I have an chat for a chat room please? OP has 9 reps: askubuntu.com/q/687674/367165

@A.B. you should be able to creat a chat room on your own. You will then be the owner which means you can grant access to users with a low reputation.

@Takkat Thank you

11:56 AM
I have not done this before becoming a chat mod so it may not work - then just shout.

@Takkat No, he can't add a user with less than 20 rep.
@A.B. create the room, then give me a link and the user's name, I'll give them access to it.

I may be wrong but I always thought that you can do such things as an owner. Actually I tried to add that user to the room, but they are not being displayed in the access tab... weird.

@Takkat You can't. See here and here for relevant feature requests.

12:12 PM
@terdon aaah! Thnaks, I forgot about the room mod tools... ;)

12:31 PM
Doesn't work for me
@danielwinter They aren't as cheap as you think in my experience. Definitely go with something that gives you a price per month. I've had some horribly slow aws instances that cost me something like 15 euros a month all things considered. DigitalOcean just resells aws instances at a lower cost, that's what you want.
GCE is cheaper. But I haven't used them.

goddamnit scaleway is out of stock, they don't have any servers left

Yeah, that's going to be trickier since the user doesn't have a chat account. I think I'll have to mod ping them and then add them. Hang on.

@stefano We recorded your signup, but we’re out of stock.
To ensure a full experience, we do not accept new signups at the moment.
We will notify you when new resources are available.

@A.B. OK, done.
