And we're live... nitroshare.net
HTTPS support is finally here.

user139252
@NathanOsman It's supposed to give an indicator, right?

user139252
I see nothing in my tool bar on MATE.

You should automatically be redirected to HTTPS.
My Let's Encrypt certificate was just issued.

user139252
No, I mean the app itself. Yes, I am directed to the HTTPS version for the site. But the NitroShare app is not showing up in my MATE toolbar.

Oh, hm...
It should show up - it installs a .desktop file which MATE should pick up.
But that may not happen until you restart or something triggers it to reload.

user139252
7:10 PM
I'll try logging out and back in.

In the meantime, you can use the "nitroshare" command to launch it.

user139252
It runs, starts listening, but I have no way of sending files now.

user139252
SHE TOTALLY SHOULD HAVE TAKEN HER HUSBAND'S LAST NAME!

jrg
That's probably why she didn't.

user139252
She could have been Iron Man :P

jrg
7:22 PM
Iron Man commander, Iron Man!
(If you get the reference, go meet real people in the real world.)

So I dropped that java class this morning . . . I'm officially out of work-study and with only Advanced Analog class left for the end of the semester . . . .
This fall semester was a trainwreck right from the start

user139252
@jrg All Google returns is Minecraft

@HeatherBrown It's a quote from The Martian.
@Serg :(

user139252
@jrg Have not yet read that. It's in my stack, though.

user139252
I have to finish "What If?" and "Saint Odd", then I get to "The Martian".

Is this in the top left corner?

@A.B. No idea what you mean...

@ByteCommander found it, thank you =)

7:42 PM
Enlighten me, please! :)
needs to install shutter again...

The following extra packages will be installed:
  imagemagick imagemagick-6.q16 imagemagick-common libbonobo2-0 libbonobo2-common libbonoboui2-0 libbonoboui2-common libcairo-perl
  libclass-data-inheritable-perl libcommon-sense-perl libcrypt-openssl-bignum-perl libcrypt-openssl-rsa-perl libdata-random-perl

Installing that as well then... And GIMP.

user139252
Mine shows as imagemagick being installed...

user139252
Though it may have been installed with MATE or GIMP...

@A.B. Ah. Never noticed that until now :D

=)
@ByteCommander your answer? askubuntu.com/q/693969/367165

@A.B. Feel free to take it, it's similar to the ones about KDE and google accounts I want to get merged above, but you're better in writing that kind of answer.

@ByteCommander Thank you, I will try it.

@jrg so you probably allready read the books I suggested huh ;)

Who's got kubuntu ?

Q: Emacs won't mouse wheel scroll on Ubuntu 15.10 with Cinnamon

AphoidI'm running Ubuntu 15.10 using the Cinnamon interface instead of the default. When I run emacs 14.5.1 in an X interface, almost everything works well with the mouse, except the mouse wheel scrolling fails. In the Messages buffer when I try to scroll up, it says: C-M-( is undefined And when I ...

Q: Run *ONLY* `/etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh` when power-button pressed, and not *ANYTHING* additional

Owen_RI want to run a custom script when the power-button is pressed. For a simple test, I put only a single line in /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh. That line creates a file it_ran.txt in my home folder. There is nothing else in /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh. So, testing: I check the file it_ran doesn't exist. I ...

@Fabby: I just discovered this fun little app! What do you think? :D

user136984
Also, do you know if there is any way of getting it so that only a certain app is allowed to find your geographical location?

@ParanoidPanda redshift is awesome; eases the eyes

@ParanoidPanda I think it's dumb! My machine has a sensor that does this!
:D :D :D

user136984

@ParanoidPanda No idea why I just gave you 15 points for that... ;)

8:22 PM
@Fabby Eizo?

So: question: not upvoted. Asnwer: upvoted!

Still having 415 more points than @ParanoidPanda! >:D

user136984
Not for long! >:P

Still has more points that both of them @ByteCommander @ParanoidPanda

user136984
@Fabby: Before you fix it it read "uestion" and not "question"... :P

8:24 PM
@Serg No more rain dance for @Serg! (CC: @ParanoidPanda, @ByteCommander)

@ByteCommander Engrish

@Serg "Gute Nacht" is correct.

@Fabby dropped that class this morning

@Fabby Fixed it yourself...

@Serg Good for you: a bit tough now, but better in the long term...
@ByteCommander Turned on the spell checker

8:30 PM
Goodbye - see you ... :)

@Fabby Yeah . . .gotta go ask my supervisor what to do now . . . .

8:34 PM
>_< I am no rain dancer yo @Fabby

@Serg You're on the wrong end, my friend: I'm the rain dancer!

73 first posts? No thanks :p

@A.B. come back from bed, I need you to translate what's @Fabby is talking about Oo

@Zacharee1 meh, there are some nice easy questions in there that can easily be duped...

@Fabby Boo! there are dark storm clouds appearing outside now >:(

8:37 PM
@ByteCommander: @Serg has no clue about me rain dancing!

@NathanOsman :D :D :D You should look out the window here: it's as black as night!

@Fabby Because it is night? :P

@Zacharee1 Too few? Try Close Votes. We have 228 of them! >:-)

@ByteCommander too many. I hate going thru them. Also, I need ~900 more rep for the close votes
@Fabby lol
@ByteCommander LQ and LA are fun, but not FP

user136984
8:39 PM
@Zacharee1: Can f.lux also be installed from the repositories?

@ParanoidPanda That's how it's installed

@Fabby wait till it's December, I'm gonna be snow dancing . . . .if that's a thing . . . also >.< i still have no clue what's it all about . . . .
Hmmm, and i don't dance well . . .

user136984
@Zacharee1: Why does the CRDF AV think that it is a malicious website?

@ParanoidPanda erm
idk

and I don't like cold . . . .You know what ? No dancing ! I'll stay at home, drink hot tea and watch youtoobz

8:42 PM
I fear asking for dmesg was not what I wanted here: askubuntu.com/q/693972/367990 CAn anyone help?

I've used it on Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS and have not had any viruses @ParanoidPanda
soo
I wanted to use it on Android but you need CyanogenMod to do that and stupid Verizon locked my bootloader

user136984
@Zacharee1: That could mean two things: there weren't any viruses, or they were so amazing you couldn't find them. ;)

@ParanoidPanda xD
@ParanoidPanda Seriously, though. Try it out. It's more stable than Redshift (at least in my experience) and it's actually made to help with sleep patterns. I use it on my iPad and it's wonderful.

user136984
@Zacharee1: Ok, well I'll run some more thorough scans, and then maybe have a look if they think it's fine. ;)

@ParanoidPanda OK, but it's not like I'm trying to infect computers. Or am I? :p

8:46 PM
@ByteCommander well , the message in OP's screenshot is due to /etc/rc6.d/S40umountfs script, i can tell you that much right now

user136984
Probably not you (but maybe :P), but the site could have got hacked, or perhaps the owners aren't as nice as they seemed to be at first.

@Serg Better tell it the OP, not me. I don't know much about that... I just tried to get some more error messages, but obviously dmesg gets reset on reboot.

@ByteCommander I've not much clue either

@ParanoidPanda The website has no firewall, which is probably what you're seeing

user136984
@Nathan: It's been a while since @GeorgetheDev's last video, you and him working on another one? :)

8:50 PM
There will probably be one more before Christmas.

user136984
@Nathan: Oh, you really should do a Christmas themed special! ;)

does 15.10 come with upstart ?
or systemd only ?

user136984
@Serg: I think systemd only.

@ParanoidPanda Oh I will.
@Serg It comes with a compatibility shim for Upstart though, IIRC.

@ParanoidPanda What are you using that finds it as a malicious site?

8:51 PM
@NathanOsman Oh! yeah! ;-)

user136984
@Zacharee1: I was just looking at the VirusTotal report on it.

user136984
Now I'm running some deeper more thorough scans though.

@Serg He who does the vertical dance well, does the horizontal dance well as well...
Tip: take dance classes!

@ParanoidPanda 1/66 finds it malicious! Oh noes!

@Zacharee1 :D :D :D
@ParanoidPanda Just stay away from Pr0n sites!

8:53 PM
Hey, I remember when I came across some malware that only one antivirus program was able to detect.

@Fabby Here we go again...

(and don't download any executables and scripts you haven't read the source code of)

I caught a sample in the wild before the major vendors had updates for it.

@NathanOsman I think F.lux is a trusted site though

user136984
@Fabby: Don't worry, I don't like the taste of prawns... :P

8:54 PM
@Zacharee1 I'm just speaking generally here.

@Fabby I never check programs I download and have never had a virus problem
@ParanoidPanda haha

@Zacharee1 I've only ever seen viruses on other people's machines!
I don't know how they catch them!

I have tons of stuff in my inbox, @Fabby, if you want some samples :)

@Fabby actually, my friend has managed to break I think 5 laptops by downloading programs from trusted sources

I get all kinds of stuff (viruses, phishing, etc,) in my inbox.

8:55 PM
@NathanOsman You have a bad spam filter
Gmail gets rid of everything

@Zacharee1 Trusted by whom?

Well, I'm gonna go smoke and get my a$$ to college. Have to talk to supervisor . . . . I dont know how to feel today: angry or depressed or happy, or psychotic o_O

@Zacharee1 I run my own mail server.

user136984
@Fabby: You look at Norton's list of bad sites and then you go to one without Norton... :P

@NathanOsman You've never heard of F.lux? It's in the news

user136984
8:56 PM
Oh, I do love this song!

Here we go again...

@ParanoidPanda eww, Norton

@NathanOsman Like I said: other people's machines... ;-)

My computer came with Norton Internet Security bundled

8:57 PM
@FAbby Tries to dance with a dog, but stomps all over dogs paws . . . . Nah, thanks . . . .I'll be looking for a gf who likes intellectual conversations rather than dances . . . .I like girls in glasses anyway

@Zacharee1 Break? Laptops?

user136984
@Zacharee1: I used to use their products when I was on Windoes, actually they detect more viruses than most vendors.

Actually break???

It kept asking me to register it and I would press "Do not show again" every time, but it would just keep going
@Fabby He killed Windows :p

Last time I broke a PC for a bet with just software is over 20 years ago...

8:58 PM
@ParanoidPanda I've had nothing but bad experiences with Norton

nowadays you have to write a device driver to accomplish that!

@Fabby Well my friend has an "affinity" for doing this

All you need is rm -rf ... - wait, is Terdon around?

user136984
@Zacharee1: How so?

@ParanoidPanda :D True!

8:58 PM
Locked himself out of an ASUS eeeBook

@NathanOsman Definitely NOT starring that!

^_^

@ParanoidPanda They come bundled on Windows computers and won't stop asking you to register
Then they expire and won't stop asking you to buy

@Zacharee1 :D

8:59 PM
@Zacharee1 Yup, I've seen that.

They're like those fake virus scanners that find 25,000 viruses and then 0 when you buy them

That's crapware, not malware!

@Fabby never said malware

Nowadays, Windows ships with Windows Defender.

Or scareware

9:00 PM
@Terrance Ransomware!
there was one on the site not long ago...

@Fabby That too! =)

@NathanOsman My Windows 8.1 computer had Norton

Lemme look!

Now we're talking about something actually insidious.

@Terrance Boo!

9:00 PM
@Zacharee1 Boo?

Scareware?

@NathanOsman if you actually want something insidious , look up usb killer - it's been a thing frequently mentioned on security stack site. not software thing, but still evil

Yeah, it scares you into buying their crap faking you out showing that there are many things wrong with your system

MMMh, I thought I answered it. Apparently only left a comment!

What happens is a rogue script encrypts a bunch of your personal files and transmits the decryption key to the bad guy. Then he offers to sell it back to you.

Basically extortion.

Chat too fast :p

@Serg The one that short-circuits the host controller?

user136984
@Zacharee1: Well, I bought Norton Internet Security and I found it rather over protective which is something I liked... :P

@ParanoidPanda I do a good enough job with my brain it seems

9:03 PM
@NathanOsman That's Ransomware

@NathanOsman no, it has some large capacitors inside, gathers current , then reverses it back into the usb port

I know.

@Zacharee1 That's @ParanoidPanda's main problem: not thinking with his right head!

@Serg You can buy an optically-isolated hub to work around that one.

@NathanOsman Ah, you were answering someone.

9:03 PM
sigh

@NathanOsman yup, but . . . how many people do that ?

@Serg Very few :P
But how many people plug in random USB devices they find lying around?

idk why I'm even on here. I just had a 100F fever

@Zacharee1 Oh my!

9:04 PM
^_^ raising hand i would do that before i got smarter . . . @NathanOsman

@Zacharee1 Get some rest and use chilled cloths to cool yourself down.
@Serg Then our job is to educate people.

I don't have it that bad anymore, but I am going to lie down
ttfn

I mean... who finds a random discarded appliance by the side of the road, takes it home, and plugs it in?
That's practically begging for problems.

@NathanOsman em . . . .a lot of people do that . . . . free stuff makes people forget everything about security

"Oh lookie here - a discarded circuit-board-looking thing. Imma take it home and plug it in to see what it does!"

user136984
9:06 PM
I just saw a blue version of this on the left side of my profile picture here but it went away before I could see what it was, what was it?

@Serg Wow. That's actually pretty scary.

user136984

@ParanoidPanda A chat flag.

user136984
Wait, what? I haven't got 10k yet...

My friend's sister in law , actually took in a PC lying outside some home . . . .I snooped around it . . . admin account had no password, there was a resume with previous owner info : email, address, phone, everything . . .

9:08 PM
That is a fail on so many accounts...

user136984
@A.B.: Do you know anything about this by the way? :)

user136984
I guess I reached 10k in chat...

You did.

I deleted all that, but man . . . .did those people never hear of identity theft ? or phishing ?

Yeah, pretty poor on their part.

user136984
9:09 PM
Cool! :)

user139252
What are we talking about here?

All manner of things.
Destructive USB devices, viruses, etc.

user136984

user139252
Like the USB device that will fry your computer in seconds?

user136984
I think that was the one... :P

9:12 PM
@HeatherBrown yup, the USB killer

@HeatherBrown If you don't have an optically isolated hub, yes.

@NathanOsman Ive done it before

i've been lurking a bit on security stack site

user139252
@Serg I wear glasses ;P

@Mateo You have to be careful though.

9:13 PM
you find intresting things about some people...
yeah.

@HeatherBrown <.< oh, you found that part of conversation too blushing

user139252
You smoke, though. That's a deal breaker.

user136984
:D

I don't smoke ;)
lol

I'm working on that part :)

user136984
9:15 PM
@Serg: Next you should ask "What kind of glasses?"... :P

Three rules:
1. If you don't know where an attachment came from, don't open it
2. If you don't know where a USB device came from, don't plug it in
3. Bacon is awesome.
3

hides a block of Pyramids behind his back

@Serg what?

user139252
@ParanoidPanda X-Ray vision?

@A.B. @Fabby was saying something about rain dancing, and I've no idea what he's talking about. Do you understand vorlon slang ?
@NathanOsman also add don't click unknown links

9:17 PM
That too.

@Serg no :)
/me now sleeping, back in 8 hours. :)

Aaanyway, where was I ? oh, right . . . .i was on my way out . . . .

user136984
@A.B.: Goodnight! :)

sudo close chat && drive-to-campus
printf %s bye

9:18 PM
just unplug your computer, then thermite the thing - then you are good ;p

user139252
@NathanOsman The first thing I do when I find any strange USB device is insert it...into the nearest garbage receptacle.

O...kay...
--- FAIL: TestChanRecv (0.00s)
	chan_test.go:28: true != true
That was helpful.

user136984
@Serg: Bye! :)

user139252
True is not equal to true. Don't you get it?

@HeatherBrown Probably the wisest thing to do.
@HeatherBrown Oh I happen to know what's going on in this particular case. But that doesn't excuse the poor error message :P

9:22 PM
@NathanOsman no internet + live CD/DVD + photorec

@Mateo Yup.
I would definitely not let anything onto my private home network that wasn't personally verified by me.
If someone comes over, they get connected to the guest network :)

Dumb question at first but nifty question after editing and even niftier answer:

Q: How do I completely nuke my system and start afresh?

Vivek GopinathanOn a brand new DoS only laptop I installed Ubuntu. I got Unable to create disk partitions so I used a Windows7 installation CD to create disk partitions. I ended up erasing the disk with the Ubuntu and now on booting it goes straight to grub rescue where all disk partitions are unknown filesystem...

(question rescued from the close queue)

@Fabby if you can even get nukes...

@Mateo Try recovering from a new partition table...

> "Note: The code above works with bash but may not work correctly with sh."

9:26 PM
in the desert with a very long remote detnator ;P

[citation needed]

then buy a new one :)

user139252
@NathanOsman That edit seems silly and useless. Also, doesn't the inclusion of !#/bin/bash force it to use bash?

Well, yes and no.
It will use Bash if the file is executable and run from a shell.

well, the church tv is almost done, just need a network run
turns out the mini pc has a strange wifi that crashes the kernel, won't run with it on in the bios

9:31 PM
@NathanOsman Nothing bash-specific!

That's what I thought.

Reject???

As far as I can tell, it doesn't apply...

Q: How to install ubuntu on an Asus VivoPC vm60?

Damian GreenI recently tried installing Ubuntu 14.04 on a new Asus VivoPC vm60 and it didn't work. The grub loader would abort with the message: drm_kms_helper: panic occured... I wasn't able to find any direct help regarding this so I thought I would post my solutions here.

Bricked Windows: VTC please

9:35 PM
so, that - but I guess a newer kernel regressed back to the same issue
we are going to plug it in to ethernet, so not a big deal...

user136984
Oh no... The UK government wants to pass a bill the means that they will keep our internet records for a year and can know everything we've looked at and sent on message apps... It disgusts me how they even say: "Almost certainly the way in which the firms could co-operate would be to turn off the encryption and give people the illusion it is still taking place,"

user136984
@Tim @Oli: You guys are in the UK aren't you so you will be affected by this too if they pass the bill?

@ParanoidPanda let's just run every internet line back to rome - let the pope setup a supermassive data center...

user136984
9:54 PM
What is the actual name for this !#? I mean in terms of having !#/bin/bash at the beginning of a bash script.

but, yeah, this totally is going to cause companies to setup more extensive internal networks, that don't even use the internet

@ParanoidPanda It's referred to as "shebang".

chrunch bang, shebang - exclamation point, hashtag

user139252
I'm on telegram now!

@ParanoidPanda And now you've got it backwards.

9:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda pling pound?
