@HeatherBrown: Are you a Tox user too by the way? :)

user139252
@ParanoidPanda Nope. I have Telegram. But I haven't used it yet.

user139252
Answered, by the way.

-____- this taiwanese girl doesn't get what I'm saying in mandarin every freakin time, so she switched back to english just now . . .

Taiwanese != mandarin. Just sayin'.
wait

@Seth they still speak mandarin in Taiwan, just different accent . . . I mostly speak with standard beijing accent

6:14 PM
@Serg they still speak mandarin in south China too, but it wouldn't get you very far ;)
Not everyone speaks mandarin in Taiwan (despite it being the official dialect). My Taiwanese friend for e.g. didn't learn mandarin except from a friend.

@Seth dude, mandarin is guo yu == national language , they learn it in school everywhere . . .

user136984
@HeatherBrown: Your answer isn't working for me...

user136984
Are you sure that that package is available for my version?

@Serg well, my knowledge is pretty dated I guess.. late 80's early 90's and before. So perhaps it has all changed ;)
@Serg so there are two possibilities I guess. Your mandarin is bad or hers is bad xD

I suppose it could have changed . . . .In any case, today I'm not that much concerned . . .I'm running low on energy and the amount of sense that i make . . .
@Seth there's a third possibility

6:18 PM
haha

user139252
@ParanoidPanda They may have merged it into the main tor package, try just sudo apt-get install tor torsocks

French MPs vote to allow government to block websites, social media under state of emergency - @AFP http://bit.ly/1PPu8IH
Whose dumb idea was that?

jrg
Ouch.

user136984
@Nathan: Well, maybe it's not such a bad idea... But, why did they decide to do it?

Oli
@ParanoidPanda Not seen the news in the last week?

user136984
6:33 PM
I mean if there are websites where ISIS terrorists normally go to communicate, maybe as a temporary block, it's not so bad...

user136984
@Oli: I have, but why do they think blocking websites will be a good idea?

Oli
The same reasons every politician does stupid things: because they're scared or because they want to be seen to be doing something... Or as here, both.

jrg
Yeah, both.
That just reinforces the idea of building a P2P darknet.

.@BreakingNews French MPs vote to kill democracy in light of terrorists attempting to kill democracy.

user136984
6:40 PM
@Seth: What...?

user136984
How are they killing democracy?

user136984
(The government, not the terrorists.)

user136984
We still talking about this internet blocking thing?

yes.

Yes, I think @ParanoidPanda

user136984
6:41 PM
Well, I wouldn't really say it's killing democracy...

freedom?

user136984
Just decreasing freedom...

what the people chose?

jrg
But once you start with decreasing freedom, you won't have any left.
4
It's a slippery slope.

user136984
Democracy is ridiculous anyway...

user136984
6:42 PM
Unfortunately we don't have anything better...

@ParanoidPanda removing or restricting my right to free speech is killing democracy.

This might be the type of potentially charged political debate @Seth says we should avoid (although he is joining...)

user136984
@Seth: Free speech isn't always a good thing.

@Zacharee1 true ;)

jrg
@Zacharee1 It is the type of debate to avoid... but it's an important one.

6:43 PM
@ParanoidPanda but who defines that?

A true conundrum

jrg
Because this could see us not having users join the site. So it's now the sites problem. ;-)

sigh

@jrg site's* ;P

jrg
@Zacharee1 hah.

user136984
6:44 PM
I think I had this conversation with someone a few days ago... :D

user136984
(Free speech, democracy, etc...)

@Locercus @BreakingNews this is what people miss. this is their goal, not blowing stuff up or killing people. Those are just means.
and I'm done.

user136984
We established that I have a bit of a problem (apparently you can't be a communist and an anarchist at the same time)... :P

jrg
@Seth you're a mod, fix my grammar for me you prick <3 ;-)

@jrg hah! Then you'd call mod abuse ;-)

jrg
6:45 PM
@Seth see but I don't think it's a valid use of the apostrophe.
Granted, I'm distracted and can't ponder english.
REGULAR EXPRESSIONS MAKE YOU DUMB. BAN REGULAR EXPRESSIONS.

@jrg it's possessive, so if it's singular it's "site's." If it's plural it's "sites'."
You need it somewhere

user136984
I tell you, this is getting weird... :D

shhhh
No it's not...
@_ is someone on Twitter

ooh, I want @_@

@Seth lol
@Seth @_@ is impossible to use

6:52 PM
that's what I figured.

@jrg regex makes people dumb ? hohoho, you are probably picking an argument with @Oli or anybody who uses those a lot . . .
I for one find them useful, but they're pain in the butt too set up sometimes

goodbye ... see you tomorrow :)

later @cl-netbox!

@Seth goodbye :)

Guys, if you want to talk to me in qtox, ping me here first. I do NOT hear or see notificaitons form qtox which is in my VM

Oh, that thing
Hey, they have a Windows version

it's multiplatform ;)

Well, obviously
But I didn't know that until now

user136984

@Mateo IKR?! Or, better yet, studied any history?

@ParanoidPanda still low 2,000s.
@Seth what?

huh, 15.10 (UNITY!) got rid of shutdown on the lock screen?

user136984
@Mateo: Think so.

Not on GNOME

user136984
7:50 PM
@Zacharee1: I don't think my GNOME has the option... But I will need to check that.

Works for me

@Serg login or lock
because if you "log out" it is there
just not on screen lock "alt + ctrl + L"

o/

@Mateo lock, Alt + Ctrl + L. Wanna screenshot ?

how did you install - upgrade, clean?

7:55 PM
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L CROSSPOST!

not that I ever would want to shutdown form lock i guess...

@Mateo clean install , VM

so, this totally should not be closed: askubuntu.com/questions/699871/…
at least not as unclear

Will this be the time Go finally builds on my Pi?
Time will tell.

@Mateo yup.

8:03 PM
It's past the problem point from last time.
So I'm optimistic.

@serg only the b or o will take effect (maybe others)- @Serg some of the things that make it safe to reboot no longer are enabled on reisub

@Mateo well which ones specifically ?

the link said k,r,e,i were disabled
so it's complicated...

A: Alt + sysrq + REISUB doesn't reboot my laptop

geezanansaATTRIBUTIONS: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/Sysrq#How_do_I_use_the_magic_SysRq_key which was based on the original work by Credits Written by Mydraal Updated by Adam Sulmicki Updated by Jeremy M. I think it will reboot mine, but not sure it is doing it "safely" aka unmounting disks and all that...

@Mateo have you altered yours file ?
 /etc/sysctl.d/10-magic-sysrq.conf

no, and I don't plan on it
not something I'm going to recommend to new users any more either

8:12 PM
@MAteo what's the value of kernel.sysrq= there ? is it 176 ? because that's the same on 14.04 and in my 15.10 VM
 176 - allow only sync, reboot and "remount read-only"
Power-off option still works even with 176 , even though it specifies only reboot there

so it won't do "e" and "i" right?

@Mateo so on my 14.04 which has same 176 value, it says i is disabled , e didn't respond

8:33 PM
@HeatherBrown Believe me, Wily's not the headache ;)

user139252
@ThomasW. Then what is causing my strange issues with wireless?

@HeatherBrown Your network is infested with gremlins :P
(my point was Wily's just a little annoying, there's FAR worse out there than Wily :P)

user139252
WHO FED THEM AFTER DARK?!

@HeatherBrown I blame @Mateo and @Serg

user139252
Darn kids, always messing with my mogwais.

8:36 PM

@ThomasW. @HeatherBrown Just water them , and they'll go away

user139252
But then my network will get wet.

@Serg I prefer my solution
Burn it with fire

Wet network . . . sounds like a network for erotica sharing

heheh
bleh only 80 away from my next milestone rep amount

8:50 PM
@ThomasW. 8-is the new 20 . . . . eait, whtm i talking about

i think you need coffee
or anti-coffee, either or :)

user139252
ANTI-COFFEE?! This must be a lie.

yessir, i need cofee, and a lot of it. better yet, sleep
good thing i reserved a conference room. once i clock out form work, im gonna go there and sleep

I can leave this accursed city and this hotel room on Monday afternoon (or Tuesday morning, more likely)!!!!!!!!

@KGIII yaaaay . . . but what about missus ?

8:53 PM
She'll be coming with me, else I'd have left long ago. :D
And the cat has a home. Life is good.
Her younger brother has inherited a cat and I can get back on the road. This makes me happy.

@HeatherBrown It's called decaf for a reason
@HeatherBrown I've also had things that 'claim' to be coffee, but it does NOTHING to help keep awake :P

user139252
Starbucks?

the stuff that is brewed by staff here (don't know what brand, it may taste and smell like coffee but it is not coffee, and I of all people would know)

user139252
Probably Peet's.

user139252
That tends to be popular in office supply catalogs.

9:10 PM
@Serg o/

@Neil o/ hellow

@Serg i have to wait until 11 am to see my test results
40 mints of waiting

@Serg you had a question about virtual machines?
(<--- is going through their inbox)

9:39 PM
@Neil what test ?
@NathanOsman can i move virtual machines from one pc with virtualbox to the other without problems ?

You sure can.
I just did that very thing yesterday.
What you want to do is go to File->Export Appliance to create a single file you can copy.
Then on the other machine, just open the file to import it.
Boom. It's that simple.
AFK.

user136984
Right, well, goodnight folks! :)

@ParanoidPanda adios , Mr. Panda

10:03 PM
Uh-oh.
The disk access LED is saturated on my Pi.
That can only mean one thing: swap.

oo, fun. Sounds like Windows :p

Yes, but this thing only has 384 MB of usable RAM.

My old computer's disk light was constantly on in Windows
@NathanOsman that might be why it's using swap :P

I know :P

Why so little

10:05 PM
They did that to cut costs, I guess.

huh
@HeatherBrown o/

And it's actually got 512 MB but the GPU uses 128 MB.

Wow

user139252
\o

Seems to have calmed down now.

user139252
10:06 PM
@NathanOsman What are you using your Pi for?

Building Debian packages.

user139252
Fun.

It's been building this package for 4.1 hours now :P

user139252
After some conversation with @KGIII last night, I used mine to seriously annoy my room-mate.

I try to be helpful. ;-)

10:08 PM
O_o

user139252
I used a motion sensor and 17 LEDs strung together to flash every time she moved around her room.

When I opened this ^ question, I was like OMG what kind of abhorent formating is that ? Oh wait , that's a screenshot

10:25 PM
I hope they don't have to read it at that size @Serg.

@KGIII well, if they do have to read it at that size . . .. then it means their vision sucks . . . .Which is something true for me - I have to keep chat and askubuntu maximized in firefox . . .

user139252
Single-payer health insurance!

user139252
I'm disappointed in Randall Munroe.

user139252
It has been weeks... nay, months!, since his last update to What-If.

That's what I figured @Serg.

10:32 PM
There is a horrible lack of questions that i can find . . . i mean those that i kinda feel i can answer
My knowledge is pretty limited so far

LOL I'm too tired to answer much of anything tonight. I am, kind of, still working on my man-page project. I've got the data in HTML format now.
I'm working on converting it to PDF.

user139252
If I think of a question, I'll ask you.

user139252
In here.

@HeatherBrown There's a user who constantly does so, much to the bemusement of other users - from what I've observed.

user139252
@Serg Here's a question! Do you want to move to California and stop smoking?

10:41 PM
Hmm... ISTR he wants to move to China.
Or bring someone from China here. :D

@HeatherBrown California ? Maybe . . . not enough money to move even to another town nearby . . .Smoking . . . .yes . . . .just haven't made a firm decision when and how

"Going to California" by Led Zeppelin is a good song. No, no I have nothing constructive to add.

user139252
@Serg You can move into the 5-bedroom house I just got into, and stop smoking then :D

@HeatherBrown That sounds appealing, and I'd gladly accept if only I was just a little bit more financially stable . . .

user139252

user139252
10:49 PM

I think Seth mentioned the other day - thanks for the reminder @HeatherBrown!
It might have been Nathan? shrugs
Anyhow, She Who Must Be Obeyed insists that I am hungry. Where should we go for dinner?
We did sandwiches for lunch and a steak house for dinner last night.
So we've got Mexican, Chinese, Italian, and Indian. (And standard American fare.)
Oh, and there's a Thai place and a Vietnamese place across town but I don't feel like going that far.

IT WERKS, ERMAGERD

#Ubuntu_hunger

I should learn the Google Maps API and then use /urandom to help me pick some place to eat. Seeing as you two aren't helpful tonight.
By then, she'll have found her own food and I'll have learned something new. :D

10:59 PM
Go for Thai or Korean

> "Yes, it's that time of the week again, when we want to delight our readers with yet another blog post from the "Watch" series of articles, and this time is going to be a lot of fun because it involves Ubuntu Phone devices and an old-school FPS game loved by millions of players around the globe." - Phoronix, Watch: DOOM First-Person Shooter Video Game Running on Ubuntu Phone

user139252

@crasic Thai is closer than the Vietnamese food so that's not a bad idea. I've been there once and it was good.

Sweet jesus I forgot how I hate dealing with XP cd keys
now which one of these 100 keys is valid

LOL Which version? (I've got keys left over from my MSDN subscription.)

11:03 PM
@HeatherBrown #LinuxFlirting #PenguinsInLove
I think I've spend too much time on twitter today, tracking the Anonymous and #OpParis

x86 SP3
Maintaining old VM's is an unfortunate necessity

user139252
@Serg What are you implying? ;P

One sec.

^.^

In other news, I did a blind upgrade to 15.10 from 14.04 and no problems

11:06 PM
@HeatherBrown whats that tag "flirtatious"

Grr... Having issues finding it - might be a minute.

user139252
Not for you.

I have a whole folder with 'em.

@KGIII Heh, no worries I tracked one that the installer accepted
Probably blacklisted but who needs windows update on XP anyway

Alrighty. I'll still look. I'm waiting for the missus to find out if we need to make a reservation.

11:08 PM
I have Win7 keys from MSDN a while ago, but lost all 10 of my virgin XP keys

:(
I could have got my hands on some OEM keys but they would have been useless.

@HeatherBrown hehe, well what were you implying with the flirtatious tag ?

The current reason for bringing up XP is because someone really likes to use old versions of solidworks and apparently hyperterminal never got ported to win 7

user139252
That....

user139252
Hey look, a bear!

11:10 PM
A bear ? <.< you mean @ParanoidPanda ?

I think they may not be storage that's not actually attached. I'm nowhere near the device to power it on. Still checking though.

@KGIII To make you feel better I'll clear my review queue

LOL No worries. I am curious now as I am pretty sure I powered it on before I left. :/ I just haven't actually checked until now.

@KGIII Tonight's dinner was boiled potatoes then fried in butter with some extra nutmeg and celery salt, Prague Schnitzel, and mushrooms and green and red bell peppers brunoise cooked in 33% cream...
Hungry yet??? ;-)
(sorry, clicked wrong reply)

That sounds good! :D
@crasic Hope you found one that worked - it turns out that device is not enabled. :/ Or at least not showing up on the network.

11:16 PM
@jrg Ben Franklin etc... ;-)

@Fabby You have poor timing tonight. I'm going to dinner. We don't need a reservation or anything so we're out of here.

@KGIII Well I have VL image and found some key, doesn't seem like it asks for activation so I don't have a 30 day clock running

(I get to leave this accursed hotel on Monday afternoon!)

@KGIII Enjoy!

I shall return. :D

11:17 PM
@KGIII Woohoo!

<-- gone celebrating and eating :D

Not me: I'm going to read up on SCRUM and probably fall asleep behind my computer...

@crasic That person really needs to upgrade.

GTG, bye

@Serg see you later.

user139252
11:19 PM
@Serg Adios!

P.S. this package build has taken 5.25 hours so far.
I was only expecting it to take about 5 hours.

user139252
@Fabby I was just instructed not to trust you.

@HeatherBrown I suppose that was very sound advice!
By whom if I may ask???

reading

11:20 PM
Mos Eisley has issues period.

user139252
I'm seeing that.

user139252
Good distraction from work though.

user139252
I had to teach three pre-calc classes today.

user139252
I have now aliased fortune | cowsay to moo

@NathanOsman Hyperteminal stops at XP, so no upgrade path (srs)

11:23 PM
I meant that they need to upgrade SolidWorks.

2007 is good enough for anyone
or so they say

@NathanOsman that C++ you helped me translate (well, more like did it for me lol) worked perfectly. Thanks!

@NathanOsman that's only a 5% deviation until now...
Pretty good in my book
Do you know how to estimate developer time? @NathanOsman

I'll get back to you guys soon. Really busy ATM.

@HeatherBrown Mos Eisley does have issues.

user139252
11:32 PM
Too many

Updating nvidia driver?
That's been a while...
Does anyone know why Ubuntu doesn't use bittorrent to send out updates or uses patches instead of the full Monty?

Delta DEBs?

@NathanOsman I thought you were really busy, but yes, that's what I'm talking about...
The tech can't be that difficult: I used to have an algorithm to use patches to send database updates like 20 years ago...

I'm walking back and forth between here and the kitchen.

Ah! What's cooking???

11:40 PM
@Fabby The concept is simple but getting mirrors to distribute all of the delta files...
@Fabby It's supposed to be a black forest cake.
We'll see if that's what it becomes... :P

Woohoo!
otherwise just call it "Canadian forest cake"...
(if it's documented, it's not a bug!) ;-)
@ByteCommander :D :D :D

user139252
I find it disappointing that I have to offer gift cards to get students to turn in work on time...

Doesn't the stick work any more nowadays?

user139252
We're not allowed to do that.

When I was a kid: every day late was -1 point...

user139252
11:44 PM
One of the classes I teach is Character Education, where attendance is 30% of the grade.

No! it was -1 first day late, an additional -2 for 2 days late, aetc...
@HeatherBrown O_o
so just for sitting in class, you get a third of the grade already???

user139252
It's a lot of team-building, class discussion, and sharing of personal experiences

I'm all for deducting marks / grades when students are absent.

@HeatherBrown Hold on: that's really lousy, or maybe school recognized you're just a horrible person and then that 30% is actually low! ;-)

@NathanOsman even in college/university?

user139252
11:47 PM
It's actually how I came out as trans to my students. We were going over pessimism and optimism, and I shared how I could have been pessimistic about my situation would have ruined me.

@Seth ...without a good reason, of course.

@Seth Nope! there I'm all for: if you're smart enough to study in the library and get full marks, you don't need to attend at all!

I don't want kids showing up sick.

@Seth OTOH: In a Chemistry lab, attendance should not be optional...

@Fabby agreed!

11:48 PM
College and university are a bit different in that you aren't required to be there. (Ignoring that some of the later grades are optional too.)
I never did anything beyond high school.

(I mean, if you get in to the second lab of creating Nitroglycerin and you don't know you have to use ice, you're in for a very big surprise!!

@Fabby Because packages are compiled from source on a validated controlled server farm
that is the value of the repo
The whole point is that you can trust the binary that comes from the repo, when you submit a package you submit the source, and the deb package info that tells the system what it need to build it\

@crasic yeah, I understand, but why can't one of the nodes be a bittorrent seed???
but poisoning BitTorrent is a thing of the past...

Well, in terms of upsteam updates, ubuntu already plugs into git and mercurial

DEBs should be signed with a PGP key, so where you get them from is a non-issue.

11:51 PM
It used to be possible (well, still is, but it would take a tremendous amount of computation to get something other then a denial of Service)
Now I know why I got an nVidia update:
NVIDIA graphics drivers could be made to run programs as an administrator.
Anyway, good night all and enjoy the Forest cake! (whichever version it happens to be!) ;-)

user139252
heading home from work.
