@ByteCommander changing the dependencies similar like this askubuntu.com/a/675647/367165

@kos figured that one out, by the way
xieerqi:$ find . -type f -regextype posix-awk -regex '^\./file1[a-z]{1,3}' 2>/dev/null
./file1abc
./file1ab

@ByteCommander or this askubuntu.com/a/627459/367165

@ParanoidPanda Technically, yes. However, not after this afternoon. The cat now has a home.

user136984
@KGIII: Good, I wasn't so sure about you feeding it cheerios! :D

I didn't feed it Cheerios. SHE fed the infernal beast the Cheerios.

user136984
2:13 PM
:D

user136984
You don't like cats then I see? :P

@ByteCommander sorry, apt-get is wrong, he have to download the Trusty versions.

@ParanoidPanda No, not really. I'm not a big fan of cats. I'm a "dog man." I don't hate cats or anything. I just don't prefer them and don't really want one to live with me. It's okay to have it as a short-term guest, I suppose.

@Tim here?
Ping me when you are here. :)

Tim
@Ravan yep, day off school!

2:22 PM
Ah?
Very fast o_O

user136984
@KGIII: What about a "panda man"? :D

@A.B. askubuntu.com/a/700042/295286 Grep all the things !

I am kind of partial to pandas but I don't think I should be allowed to have one as a pet.

user136984
@KGIII: No, you won't be its master, it will be yours! >:D

@Serg =) The OP loves grep o_O

2:26 PM
@KGIII There's a joke about the difference between cats and dogs:

Unless I treat it nicely and then we might just be friends and not a master/servent relationship. It could happen.

@ByteCommander done =) askubuntu.com/a/700040/367165

Yes? @ByteCommander?

@A.B. yeah, probably because that's the only one they understand well enough so far . . .like me ! I understand AWK somewhat, but sed is my weakness . . . and grep . . . .

user136984
@KGIII: Don't you want it to train you in the ways of the dark side of the force?

2:27 PM
@ParanoidPanda No, not really.

A dog thinks:
"My humans - they feed me, they pet me, they love me. They must be gods!
A cat thinks:
"my humans - they feed me, they pet me, they love me. **I must be God!**

user136984
Pan?

user136984
:D

user136984
@KGIII: Well I do! I will become a Sith Lord, and eventually turn into a panda!

@ByteCommander LOL Yup. Sounds about right. My dog will come in and put his head on my lap while I sit on the toilet. That's love, right there.

2:28 PM
That... uhm... would be a bit too much love in my opinion though...

@ParanoidPanda I don't know how to say this politely but pandas actually are too lazy or dumb to have sex with one another so we have to use artificial insemination! I don't wanna be that lazy!
@ByteCommander True but it's total love. That there's a dog. A cat just comes to visit when it wants something from you. A dog comes to see if you want something from it. :D

@A.B. Why did you escape the dots only in the first half?
sed -i 's/libssl0\.9\.8/libssl1.0.0/' DEBIAN/control

@ByteCommander The first part is the RegExp
. without a leading `\` means, any char.

Alrighty, I must finish getting ready. I've some personal issues to attend to. I shall return this afternoon.

user136984
@KGIII: Actually, why don't they do that with pandas?

2:32 PM
Aha, I know basic regex syntax, but I did not know about sed.

user136984
(Artificial insemination.)

user136984
@ByteCommander: You sed it!

user136984
;P

@ParanoidPanda are you fine?

@ByteCommander: Why not just get rid of the American one then so that we only have one proper one? >:PParanoid Panda 34 mins ago
@ParanoidPanda ^ Really? :P o.O

user136984
2:34 PM
@A.B.: No, probably not... :P

user136984
I didn't have much breakfast this morning because I kind of ran out of milk...

user136984
So maybe I should go and have some more now...

@ParanoidPanda purge never removes your local config

user136984
So should I delete all the files they mention?

@ParanoidPanda
xieerqi@15:~$ ls /home/xieerqi/.config/tox
qtox.ini  serg-xie.ini   serg-xie.qtox_history.encrypted
qtox.log  serg-xie.lock  serg-xie.tox

user136984
2:39 PM
@Serg:

user136984
qtox.ini qtox.log TheNomad.ini TheNomad.qtox_history.encrypted TheNomad.tox

user136984
Is what I get.

@ParanoidPanda NO do not !

hg8
@ParanoidPanda By the way, can I add you on tox?

@ParanoidPanda You know that there also exist other nutrients besides lactose, casein and triacylglycerol, right?

2:42 PM
@ParanoidPanda Well , ini files are config files , so . . . if you remove them, you reset the config . . . @hg8 removes everything, so that's more general approach . . .I'd go with his solution . . .Personally, I'd try to remove .ini files one by one to determine which is the right one

hg8
@Serg I tried, and removing only the .tox file is not enough

@ParanoidPanda Just move instead of REmove and you'll be save.

@hg8 Well,then . . . why don't we just . . . rm -rf .conf/tox ?

hg8
@Serg Removing the .ini is not enough either

@ParanoidPanda @Serg : if you delete the ini - I think you have to reinvite all your contacts

2:44 PM
> I have forgotten my password and wish to create a new profile, but also delete the old one
^ He has to do so anyway.

user136984
@cl-netbox: That's fine, I have no contacts! :D

@ByteCommander yes if you forgot ...

@ParanoidPanda nuke it all, rm -rf .config/tox/*

hg8
@Serg +1

That makes soooo much sense. A messenger without contacts.

hg8
2:46 PM
@ParanoidPanda If you had no contact nor conversation, you can delete the folder

@Serg correct - but then you have to create a new profile and provide the new ID to all your contacts
smoke ... BRB

Leaving for today - seeya!

hg8
Bye @ByteCommander

@ByteCommander goodbye ! :)

There has to be a way to export all contacts form qtox , right ?

2:53 PM
OMG tomorrow interview :\
I am still here o_O

hg8
@Serg export your .tox file

namei - follow a pathname until a terminal point is found nice

hg8
is enough

When you click your own profile info in qtox, it says /home/.config/tox/PROFILE.tox is the actual profile, so that's the correct one that must be deleted , so you were right @hg8 Also I've figured the export out already

user136984
@ByteCommander: Bye! :)

2:55 PM
xieerqi:$ namei /home/xieerqi/testFile.txt
f: /home/xieerqi/testFile.txt
 d /
 d home
 d xieerqi
 - testFile.txt
@A.B. that's cool yo
xieerqi:$ namei /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator
f: /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator
 d /
 d etc
 d alternatives
 l x-terminal-emulator -> /usr/bin/gnome-terminal.wrapper
   d /
   d usr
   d bin
   - gnome-terminal.wrapper
And it follows symlinks

@Serg Nice tool

user136984
What does it mean to make qTox "portable"?

user136984

@ParanoidPanda "port" means make it such that you can use it on more than 1 platform (Linux, Windows, Phone for instance)

@ParanoidPanda when you hover the mouse over that text, it says that config files will be saved in $(PWD) rather than in $HOME/.config

user136984
3:09 PM
@Serg: How does this make it "portable"?

@ParanoidPanda No idea . . .
Devs must have had their reasons

user136984
@hg8: How do I add people? :P

@ParanoidPanda not every OS has a ~.config put it will have an installed path ;)
*but

hg8
@ParanoidPanda Click the little + on the bottom =)

user136984
Ok... Then what?

hg8
3:16 PM
Paste my id

user136984
@hg8: Ok, I've sent the request. :)

@ParanoidPanda Are you ready to add me ?

user136984
Sure! :)

hg8
@Serg May I add you back?

@hg8 you already have Oo
but sure
@ParanoidPanda done ? can i delete ?

hg8
3:21 PM
@Serg Yes but changed computer and forgot to export my profile...

user136984
@Serg: Yeah.

@hg8 shall I delete the old profile then ?
No, wait , it shows you are online now

hg8
@Serg Ah yes... Because I exported my profile before adding you... So I have the same id than before

@hg8 so . . . you don't need to reset password in any way if you export profile ?

hg8
@Serg, no it's the same password
seems like username, password and contact list is stored in <username>.tox

kos
3:26 PM
For the sake of my sanity, please tell how to make Bash inherit everything from the parent shell (environment variables, shell variables, alias, functions, options, everything).
Is there even a way?

kos
@Serg Thanks, but that only puts options set with set in the environment. I mean it's something, but I'd need all the rest as well

@kos well . . . . maybe dump everything you need into a file and then source it ?

kos
@Serg The unholy thing!!!
:D

3:36 PM
@kos wat ? oO

kos
Beside, that seems to be the only option
Dumping and sourcing :D

@kos no. parsing is more elegant than sourcing :=)

@Rinzwind done

Q: Ubuntu 15.10 won't boot if GDM as default display manager

edward torvaldsI have just installed Gnome-Shell 3.16 from Software Centre, every thing is just fine, except I cannot boot with GDM as default display manager. On the other hand if Lightdm is used my system boots fine. Is there a way to fix boot with GDM?

user139252
3:48 PM
I'm getting upset with Wily...

>:)
all my problems with wily went away when I started using the prop.video driver and switched from symlinks to editing the config file for the /home/*/ directories

user139252
First, I was having issues with it forwarding my traffic through OpenVPN while wired... I disconnected from wired, and now the wireless won't even connect.

user139252
I boot back into Trusty, and everything is fine.

@ParanoidPanda What tox means by portable in this case is that it would take all of its files and pack them into one folder so you can move it between computers easily.

askubuntu.com/a/700065/15811 windows software = naa
@Seth make it snappy :=)

4:05 PM
I wish I haven't already ran out of points . . . It's gonna be a long day, and I'm probably gonna be posting bunch of answers because . . . boredom

user136984
Are there any good Network Intrusion Detection Systems for Ubuntu by the way?

@ParanoidPanda um . . .fail2ban ?
Which is too confuzzin 4 meh

user136984
Isn't that just a blocking and not reporting thing?

It should be reporting to logs

user136984
Not good enough! I want email updates! :P

user136984
4:13 PM
Anyway, where are the logs? And does fail2ban need any configuring?

@ParanoidPanda any sort of firewall type of thing needs configuring . . . i'm no expert on firewalls though . . .

@ParanoidPanda Fail2ban should need some configuring. Mainly you want to copy the /etc/fail2ban/jail.conf as /etc/fail2ban/jail.local then do all the configs in the .local file

anybody gnome desktop user?

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Me! :)

@ParanoidPanda Also look into Permanently Banning certain IPs wireflare.com/permanently-ban-repeat-offenders-with-fail2ban

4:17 PM
@ParanoidPanda do you know how to get minimize, maximize button in panel when window is maximized and on window it is not fully stretched?
@ParanoidPanda there is not place for background apps like in unity

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Background apps?

yes, like dropbox icons in panel in unity

user136984
Oh, you mean appindicator?

user136984
What version of GNOME and Ubuntu are you running?

3.16
gnome shell

4:24 PM
@Terrance hey my friend, all servers up and running?

@A.B. Hello! Working on getting them up and running. =)

What is the main difference between Fedora and Centos?

jrg
Release speed.
(well, now that's the main difference)

@A.B. Typical CentOS users are organisations and individuals that do not need strong commercial support in order to achieve successful operation. CentOS is 100% compatible rebuild of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, in full compliance with Red Hat's redistribution requirements. CentOS is for people who need an enterprise class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support. (distrowatch.com)

jrg
think of CentOS as the LTS, Fedora as the 6 month release.

4:28 PM
@cl-netbox great, thank you

@A.B. :)

Installing CentOS ...

@A.B. I would prefer fedora-server ... more for you to fiddle around ... =) what do you say @Terrance ?

hg8
I leave
Bye guys
and girls

@hg8 goodbye ! :)

4:30 PM
@hg8 o/

Bye @hg8
Sure, I turn away and I miss another distro questionaire. =)

@hg8 o/
@cl-netbox o/

@edwardtorvalds hello ! :)

@cl-netbox Most of my experience in the server department is with RHEL.

4:32 PM
@Terrance \o/
@Serg here?

@Ravan Hello! o/

@Terrance so what is better for @A.B. to learn red hat stuff - CentOS or Fedora ?

If an app not loading for 10 seconds, I am getting force quit or wait option. How to avoid it? @Serg

@ParanoidPanda excuse, gone?

@edwardtorvalds How are you today ? :)

4:34 PM
@cl-netbox pretty great, what about you?

@edwardtorvalds fine as well - thank you ! :)

after installing gnome shell I cannot see desktop notification of our chat

@edwardtorvalds look in the left down corner ...

@cl-netbox I would say to learn CentOS as it seems closer to RHEL server wise, but end user it would be Fedora.

@cl-netbox it is nowhere
I am not talking about setting but actual notification

4:37 PM
@edwardtorvalds I am having GNOME 3.18 in fedora VM and there it is (hidden) in the left on the bottom of the desktop ... only appears when something happens ... system notifications are on the top ...

A girl just told me "Have a great break !" I was just talking with a guy about the Thanks giving break, and it took me a minute to respond to her "You too " . . . Seriously, I regret staying up all night

@cl-netbox oh that, I have disabled it, because I want to put appindicator in panel just like in unity, do you know how?
@cl-netbox enough of edits :p

Ah! Edward is here! Now I can finally un-ignore him!

Is there a way to see the original source of the shortened links , such as those used on twitter ?

:P ;-)

user136984
4:39 PM
@edwardtorvalds: Install this.

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: And you may need to then follow these instructions.

user136984
:)

@ParanoidPanda thanks it worked

user136984
Great! :)

user139252
@Serg Yes, this: bit.ly/1n3mMDr

user139252
4:40 PM
Yes, I did shorten the link to a link unshortener :P

user139252
Just for irony's sake.

@HeatherBrown well . . .that's what I was about to say : "How ironic . . .a shortened link for a question asking about unshorting them"

@hg8: you still around???
I need help with French...

@ParanoidPanda also there is no minimize/maximize/close button in panel for maximized windows

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Could you post a screenshot of what you mean?

4:43 PM
@ParanoidPanda on unity if I hover over to top left I can see minimize/maximize/close button

@edwardtorvalds okay - nice ! :)

user136984
Are you running the GNOME flavour of Ubuntu, or some sort of odd mixture of the normal Ubuntu and the GNOME DE?

user136984
And are you running 15.04 or 15.10?

I am runing Unity-ubuntu 15.10 and I have installed gnome-shell from software center

user136984
4:46 PM
Yeah, I think that that is slightly inadvisable... I had major trouble when I was trying to install gnome-shell on normal Unity Ubuntu. Have you removed Unity?

@ParanoidPanda you have a qtox Q&A day to day , it seems :D

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Well, you're never going to fully have GNOME Shell then... You might also get some competition between Unity and GNOME Shell, you should probably (if you really want GNOME) just do a fresh install of Ubuntu GNOME Remix.

user136984
@Serg: Yeah! :D

ok
@ParanoidPanda @cl-netbox meanwhile askubuntu.com/q/700068/294611

4:53 PM
AFK - BRB :)

@A.B. oops
@ParanoidPanda if lightdm is not getting loaded, how can it fonflict?

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: How did you disable it?

user136984
I would at least try removing it though... You can install it again after removing it if you want it back.

@ParanoidPanda during installation of gnome shell it asked me to choose between gdm and lightdm, I choose gdm,

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Well, I remember trying to do what you are doing now (I ended corrupting my whole system, but anyway...) and having to remove it.

4:57 PM
@ParanoidPanda OK, I am not getting settings for AppIndicator Support

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Settings?

we have settings for each extension in tweak tool right?

user136984
Have you installed GNOME Tweak Tool?

user136984
The settings are in there, though this one does not have any settings.

5:01 PM

user136984

user136984
Sorry, I am not able to go to the imgur site... :P

@ParanoidPanda see this from your post: i.stack.imgur.com/UwsFC.png

user136984
New security measures...

5:02 PM
you are in office?

user136984
No, but what is my first name (of my username)?

user136984
:P

user136984
I've installed a new extension recently which has upgraded my security.

@ParanoidPanda I got it :D LOL
@ParanoidPanda what makes you panda :P

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Anyway, you do get settings for most of your apps there, just not that one. (It's the button next to the remove button.)

5:05 PM
I know, there is settings for that app shown in your answer but not in mine, leave it :D
@ParanoidPanda also if I try to reorganize the position in dock, gnome shell restarts

user136984
Did you restart GNOME Shell after installing those extensions by the way?

yes, by pressing Alt-F2 and typing r and then Enter

user136984
I had a lot of problems in GNOME 3.16, why don't you just install GNOME 3.18?

@ParanoidPanda for that I may need ppa right?
ppa breaks system :)

user136984
Does it?

user136984
5:13 PM
You'd need to install the semi-unofficial GNOME3-Staging PPAs maintained by the official GNOME3 team.

@ParanoidPanda you mean this: news.softpedia.com/news/…

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: Yeah, that's it, they always make it sound scary and like it will break lots of stuff, but if they had managed to get GNOME 3.18 into the latest version of Ubuntu then they wouldn't be saying that, plus it's the version they put into many other Linux distros, I've never had any trouble with it.

user136984
Well, they always say scary things, but neither me, nor anyone else running 3.18 that I have spoken to have had any problems or ever broken anything.

user136984
Oh, I was referring to the message you deleted.

5:19 PM
anyway, is there a way to change animation?

user136984
Animation?

yes, when we minimize and maximize

user136984
But you probably shouldn't use those PPAs to upgrade to 3.18 if you're not using the official GNOME flavour, you've already sort of done it not fully, so trying to upgrade it fully probably won't end up in anything good...

user136984
@edwardtorvalds: You should be able to change that with different themes.

ok
@ParanoidPanda lastly, if I change the position of apps in dock gnome shell will crash

user136984
5:24 PM
Sounds like the result of your bugy install. You really should install the GNOME flavour properly if you don't want to keep running into problems, because Unity is so well integrated into the system, installing GNOME Shell and kind of removing it a bit may cause you big problems (I tried the same as you once).

user136984
But you should ask @A.B., he's the real expert round here. :)

Q: How to tunnel Tox through Tor?

Paranoid PandaI recently installed qTox using this guide, but as I read in the Tox FAQs that Tox doesn't actually make any attempt to cloak your IP, I was wondering as it mentioned: A workaround does exist in the form of tunneling your Tox connections through Tor. How exactly you can use Tor with Tox? I am ...

qtox + tor ? U m m m , I haz no experiencez with tor
you know how you have a person next to you, and you really want to conversate but have no idea what to say ?
Typical me . . .

Start with Hello

@Terrance we're past that part

@Serg Ah, OK. It's been over 19 years for me since the dating scene, so I don't think I would be much help.

user139252
5:38 PM
@Serg Tell him/her that you really like his/her shoes.

user139252
@ParanoidPanda Check my comment.

@HeatherBrown done that, complemented her nails and attire
@HEatherbrown Thing is she's cute, smart , she used to work in the labs, but i never worked with her, she just stops by every now and then . . . Today and last week was two times I've talked with her for more than 1 minute . . . Problem is . . .>_< I'm not very creative ! When it comes to converssations, especially when I am running on no sleep and coffee and nicotine . . .
And she's biochem major . . . so i cannot impress her in any way with my Ubuntu / Linux knowledge

user139252
You can impress her with your sense of humor?

user139252
Be funny. I like funny guys.

You know what . . . I'll stick with Linux knowledge . . . my sense of humor is non-existent or too crude for general public . . . .
