An eccentric yet compassionate extraterrestrial Time Lord zips through time and space to solve problems and battle injustice across the universe, traveling via the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space), which is his old and occasionally unreliable spaceship that resembles a blue police phone box (but changes its appearance depending on its surroundings) and is much, much larger inside than outside.

@NathanOsman could you clear the comments here please? The OP was nice enough to sort everything out with me in chat so they are no longer relevant. I'd flag but it might not be obvious why they're obsolete and since you're here. . .

Now I have the Dr. Who theme running through my head over and over!

By the way, this script is excellent, works like a charm and deserves some upvotes:

Q: Make your own custom "magic links" for comments!

ᔕᖺᘎᕊThere are loads of feature requests on Meta for adding specific 'magic links' to comments. (links that expand, eg. [edit] -> [edit](/posts/id/edit)). So I made a userscript that allows you to create your own magic links to expand to your own custom URLs. Usage At the top of the script, before ...

@terdon Sure.

Well, balls ! My script is working on 14.04 but not in 15.10 VM

12:01 AM
@terdon The ones from the OP?

@Zacharee1 except he doesn't quite know how it all works, and it is stuck as a phone box ;)

@NathanOsman Yes, thanks. He has since fixed the issue that wasn't letting me use it so they are no longer relevant.

@Mateo Yeah. That's just the IMDb or Wikipedia description

@Serg Which one? The take a break thing?

@terdon Done.

12:03 AM
@terdon no , unity greeter wallpaper changer

@NathanOsman Cheers
@Serg Ah. No idea then. Serves you right for using Unity :P

It is clearly working . . . but only half way . . .
the background clears
but new picture isnt set

printf("Starting bash...\n");
execv("/bin/bash", 0);
printf("Error: %s\n", strerror(errno));
And what helpful output does the kernel give me?
Starting bash...
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000004

and they are up to 13 on people that have played him...

No error or description of any sort!

12:06 AM
@terdon but it WERKS in 14.04 ! It has nothing to do with Unity

I'm sure it doesn't, I was being silly.

@terdon i know :p I'm just being overprotective over my script

@Serg bet they changed some things, to prevent dual wallpapers that flash when you get to the login
I get that on 14.04, quickly displays the default, then changes to my wallpaper

I found it . . .image didn't have read permissions for other groups
I'll need to put that into the script

12:35 AM
@Mateo no , it was just permissions of the image issue. I'm gonna post the script once i am home. Let me know if you need a link to it
Also, if anybody else is interested, let me know

@Serg cool

So many extra drivers included.

georgeHow can i send a message to a log file (not the apt log) after the installation of a package. I simple want to log which package (package name) was installed. ie. "links installed successfully"

@NathanOsman how is it wasted time better to try than not to try.

It's frustrating when you don't accomplish the original goal.

@NathanOsman You got to keep trying if you give up now then the time will be wasted.

There's got to be a point where you give up.

2:39 AM
what would you gain from giveing up.

The remaining time I'd waste.

you have a time limit ?

Well I obviously can't be doing this forever.

It's making me wonder if something is loose...

@NathanOsman SD card gone bad

The card is in fine shape. I'm not so sure the card reader is connected correctly though...

@NathanOsman What PI do you have ?

I have a RPi model B and a RPi 2.
But the SD card is for the model B.

@NathanOsman i got a RPi B+ i heard that the SD slot on the B is not that good

That does it. I'm using a different reader.

Why does the name "Pomodoro" look so familiar? :/ (I know about @Serg's script.)
Heh, wait, it's the time management thing from the 80s or 90s. Never mind. :/

@KGIII well, it's basically how 30 minute work - 5 minute rest sessions are called
yup
So , that's why I called my script tomatoScript

It's also good for your eyes, take your eyes off the computer screen and let them focus on something distant.
I have issues with that sort of thing. If I stop then I get confused and spend time getting back on track.

OK, link to script posted on my recent answer as well as the high - voted standard answer. Hopefully folks will find it useful. This question has received so much attention, that it should definitely become handy to some

Kinda like a "download and extract here." Is there a way to make extracted files go to certain system locations? You could make it self-extracting so it would "install" itself.

You could pre-package it with directions, I guess. My thinking was that it would be good practice for you and you'd learn new things. It's well above and beyond the requirements for the answer, but you know that. ;-)
I know that with Windows you can set up to extract to $USER and $DESKTOP and things like that. I don't know if such functionality is included with Linux. :/
You can even do stuff like $SYSTEM/folder/sub_folder/filename.ico or the likes. I have no idea if such is possible, or a similar path, with Linux.

5:12 AM
@Serg GitHub is a good idea

@KGIII I've just left a voicemail to my friend who is also a graphic design major in university, she can design me a tomato icon, and maybe I can package that script into some form of tar of deb package

Awesome! Don't forget to put up a small page and donation links. nods

Lol , too early for donations

Well yeah, but when it's done and then is running properly and you're willing to support it...
Ya never know, maybe you'll be the next bigwig in personal time management software. It could happen. ;-)

I am going to do that for you bro :)

Yes but now you can point out that you get gold stars! (And it is educational.)

@KGIII What can you do with gold badges i got one :D. Nothing right

You can print them out and put them on your mother's fridge. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing one can do with them except for feel a sense of accomplishment.

@KGIII How do you do that :D

I'd print the page and use a magnet.

I installed a "favorite users - stack exchange" extension. I keep forgetting that I just did that the other day. So, now your posts have a green indicator bar @Serg and it keeps making me look at it funny. Ah well. I will get used to it. ;-)

I went with "Smart RSS" as an extension. It's beautiful.

@Neil that one finds all files that have number at the end of file extension jpg and moves them to trash
pretty much how OP wanted
I also added -print flag for listing the files it finds, just in case OP notices it removed something they didn't wanna remove
also i send files to trash instead of rm, because . . .safety !

@hbdgaf I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. By my count, however, we're owed two more movies as there were six books in the series. (Unless I've forgotten - I'm not home to check.)

@terdon @A.B. @Fabby @muru suggestion needed : whats in demand right now on AU ? What new topic should I try to target ?

@KGIII If memory serves at least one of the books was published post mortem... and was finished by another author

6:28 AM
@hbdgaf I think that's correct. I seem to recall that it was his son who finished the last one from his father's notes but I could be thinking of another author.

@KGIII Pen names and all. No telling. It wasn't another Ludlum that finished it, but it could have been his son trying to break out as his own thing and not ride coat tails.

Maybe. I've got the series at home but, alas, I am not home to check it. :D
I should see if I can find them in eBook format and reread them. It has been a while.

If you haven't read them, they're low fantasy... some of the best books I've ever read though, the Aurian series and the Coldfire Trilogy.

@Serg you gave me the answer some time ago askubuntu.com/q/699281/367165

@Serg beyond expectations :P
@hbdgaf Hello

6:33 AM
I've never really considered them fantasy. Instead, I've really thought of them as what I call "soft science-fiction."

@Ravan o/
@KGIII Bourne was just fiction. When I say low fantasy, I'm referring to swords and sorcery.
Gerald Tarrant of the Coldfire trilogy is by far, my favorite anti-hero

I don't think that I've read it. :/ I've a habit of forgetting names and authors of books that are read for entertainment rather than scholarly pursuits.

You'ld remember if you read it.

Maybe. LOL I don't read as much as I used to, at least not books. I probably should read more.

Leisure reading is something I used to do... not so much any more. It's one of the greats I got turned on to by a friend that wanted to be an author, and as such had read the majority of the fiction section in a bookstore where we worked.
He also tried to get me to read game of thrones, but it seemed like too much work.

6:42 AM
I've never read that, either. I hear it's a good television show but I don't really watch TV so I'd never know and it is unlikely that I'll ever seek the series out online.

I seem to remember the words came out of my mouth "Dude, if you'ld just read nonfiction instead, you'ld be the smartest guy I know"

LOL I used to read huge amounts like that. Then the internet happened. :/ I was in my mid-to-late 20s when we'd dial into BBSes and then, later, we had the WWW. My reading took a serious hit at that point.

I still read after BBSs. Broadband killed it for me though.

Yeah, I think it was the advent of the WWW itself, beyond the BBSes, that took away my reading time. Ah well... I still read - a lot. I am just not reading books. I guess, it could be said, I'm reading more non-fiction than ever.

6:49 AM
I sort of miss that bookstore job, but let bygones be bygones.

Bookstores are a rarity in some areas now. Back home, I don't have any new bookstores for about 100 miles. At least not that I'm awarer of. There is one used bookstore, down in Farmington, but it's not very large and tends to cater to things that don't really tweak my interests.

If you're up for a funny one, same guy: "Where's your Urban Fiction section?" I'm sorry, our fiction section is completely integrated, so if you want an ethnic author, you're going to have to find it mixed in with the rest of fiction. -- We laughed and laughed about that one.

snickers

Yeah. I got stuck on stupid. I was all "The fuck is urban fiction" -- of course I didn't say that, but he stepped in, and his response was great.

7:06 AM
You had an ethnically diverse fiction section.

Yes. Yes we did.

Ah, the implications of separating them by the ethnicity of the author... "We're a separatist bookstore!"

Yeah, but the same people that would protest it demand it. So, I was infinitely amused.

The Klan would probably approve. I wonder if people actually think about the consequences of what they ask for?

Probably not.

7:11 AM
They probably meant well. Ah well... Such is life, I suppose.

Probably so.

I do miss the impulse buys at bookstores. I miss them a lot.

I don't really miss the bookstore proper. I miss being able to find smart people I can talk to face to face on the patio reading ten pages of something to decide if they want to buy it. I mean, you don't go to a bookstore because you're stupid... usually...

I can't say that I've really conversed at most bookstores. There was one that was more a coffee shop and, suffice to say, I didn't really enjoy the vast majority of the people there.

I met some people ten years ago that I still know today based on the bookstore/coffeeshop patio. It's just how it works I guess.
Probably ignored 9/10ths of them, but there's always one.

7:17 AM
Yeah, I imagine that I've just had different experiences with you. Or, perhaps, I just don't like people.

Q: Linux ignoring multicast route over loopback

Bruce MerryI'm trying to test some multicast code on a single machine. I'm trying to get the packets sent over the loopback device (lo) instead of the default eth1. Googling keeps turning up the incantation route add -net 224.0.0.0 netmask 240.0.0.0 dev lo ifconfig lo multicast but even after doing this ...
