Tim

who's?

Tim

that gives 2

Tim
1:22 PM
okay kewl
@Fabby ^^

by deleting his own he has blocked himself from asking anything else

Tim
:P

@fossfreedom :D :D :D
@Tim thanks!

Tim
System working it's magic there!

hg8
1:26 PM
@Fabby Thanks =) I think default pre-written comments are pretty rude for newcomers.

@hg8 I agree and tried to get better close reasons, but failed...
@Tim Sorry, just rolled back your last edit. I don't like the Royal Plural. I can change he/she/it to "it" but definitely not to "they"... :/

Tim
@Fabby nah that's fine :P

Offended?
@Tim whew!

Tim
lots of people get uppity about singular they ;)
it would read better or s(he)
or (s)he

1:36 PM
@Tim In other languages then English, plural is only used for reigning monarchs...

kos
@A.B. Our answers here are wrong: askubuntu.com/q/691765/380067, I found a duplicate: askubuntu.com/q/440345/380067

Tim
@Fabby hu?

(English doesn't really have a plural)

Tim
They is allowed

1:37 PM
also: english.stackexchange.com/questions/48/… for gender neutral usage

@Takkat yeah, but that's talking about a group of people, here it's an individual...

Tim
@Fabby nah that is the singular they
Singular they is the use in English of the pronoun they, or its inflected or derivative forms, such as them, their, or themselves, as a "pronoun that is neutral between masculine and feminine", to refer to a single person or an antecedent that is grammatically singular. It typically occurs with an antecedent of indeterminate gender, as in sentences such as: "Everyone returned to their seats." "Somebody left their umbrella in the office. Would they please collect it?" "The patient should be told at the outset how much they will be required to pay." "But a journalist should not be forced to reveal...

kos
@Fabby My related question on ELL: ell.stackexchange.com/questions/62371/…

@Tim that's "it"...

Tim
:P nah it is an object
or a pet :P

1:39 PM
It is a perfactly grammatical way of not saying neither male nor female.
Grammatically correct for neither male nor female...
I refuse to use the Politically Correct new-fangled singular they.
It's an impediment to progress.

Tim
:P

You don't like being called "he"? Then I'll "call you she"
or it if you like neither...

Tim
let's take it to the Supreme Court!

that's as far as I'm wanting to go...

Tim
nah he is fine for me :P

1:41 PM
@kos o_O

@Tim Is there one in the UK???
(and called like that?)

@kos deleted

@Tim :D just found that one too!

Tim
@A.B. how many attempts? :P

1:42 PM
@Tim for what?

Tim
@A.B. the edit for that message :P
The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, commonly known as the Old Bailey from the street on which it stands, is a court in London and one of a number of buildings housing the Crown Court. Part of the present building stands on the site of the medieval Newgate gaol, on a road named Old Bailey which follows the line of the City of London's fortified wall (or bailey), which runs from Ludgate Hill to the junction of Newgate Street and Holborn Viaduct. The Crown Court sitting at the Central Criminal Court deals with major criminal cases from within Greater London and, in exceptional cases,...
That's just for london tho really

kos
@A.B. yup. It would have take to read dpkg's man page to understand that.

@Tim All of whom are basically ignorant, really. I've never understood why people get so worked up about it. It's been commonly used for centuries and by most of the great writers in the language. Objecting to it has as much grammatical or historical basis as objecting to ending sentences with prepositions.

Tim
Oh I do that a lot :P
And really, I over use really.

These are fabricated rules, invented by uptight and close minded Victorian grammarians and do not reflect either grammaticality or correctness.

Tim
1:48 PM
Yes.

Hanging out on English Language & Usage quickly disabuses one of such conceits.
@Fabby That's where you're wrong. There's nothing newfangled about it. It has been used for centuries. Nothing to do with political correctness, despite its having been appropriate by certain groups. It is as old as the language itself and has been used by authors from Shakespeare to Shaw.

Tim
What do you guys think of "Critique"? "Request clarification" - are they common English words that non native speakers with limited english would understand?

What would be better?

@Tim Request clarification

Tim
@JourneymanGeek nah just are they easy to understand from a non native speaker perspective?

1:54 PM
@Tim Critique will also be understood by speakers of any Latin language, so that's probably better for non-natives. Unfortunately, it is not a synonym of request clarification.

I donno
I'm indian
(well culturally anyway)
English is like "Oh those snooty victorians, we'll beat them at their own game, those rapscallions"

Singaporean==Indian?

and then some folk lost their way
lol
@terdon: My mom grew up in india

@JourneymanGeek That's what you get for doing the needful :P
@JourneymanGeek Ah, I see.

My grandad learnt english from an authentic scottsman
@terdon: Clearly the old country got fed up and decided to butcher the english language to get back at the old colonial oppressors.

Tim
1:55 PM
@terdon no, I'm looking for synonyms for both of those really
"provide feedback" sounds a bit better and "ask for more information".

@Tim Give us an example phrase.

Tim
“This does not provide an answer to the question. To critique or request clarification from an author, leave a comment below their post.”

@JourneymanGeek Unfortunately, the Brits are doing so as well (no offense to those of them in this room). I was sat there indeed!

@terdon This is what they get for republicanism, and not drinking enough tea.
(note, this is entirely in jest)
Them and their fake empire.

@Tim Ah, yeah, I'd leave that as it is. Critique is relatively uncommon in English but it or its derivatives are quite common in other languages.

1:58 PM
Also critique is neutral compared to criticize
Same root
but a critique can be positive too

Guys why is this user blocked from asking questions? askubuntu.com/users/466702/akalank-prakash
sorry if that's been discussed before, but it doesn't look right to me

@StefanoPalazzo Because he asks questions and deletes the questions when he gets a comment that answers his questions...

Okay I see

@StefanoPalazzo You're a mod: you should be able to see this...
(The rest of us plebeians can't)
;-)

I can see that they're blocked and that they've deleted questions. I didn't put two and two together.

2:10 PM
@StefanoPalazzo 4! ;-)

@Tim looks like you have malware

Too bad. They've had two legitimate (albeit low quality) questions

Tim
@Mateo yeah it was a chrome extension decided to do that today :(
I liked that one as well

ah, I see the q/a

Tim
yah

2:12 PM
@Tim It's not the same, but you can highlight any monetary amount, right click and go "search google..." and it'll convert it into your locale's currency

Tim
@StefanoPalazzo yeah and I have custom right click context search so I can set the up, and I have a custom search "gbp" that does gbp to usd
:P

Inter-bank rate (so you know how much you're being ripped off)
Daily rate
Everything you'll ever need and from a Swiss bank!
Absoluely trustworthy!
;-)

Tim
I have to say when I was in Switzerland the rates were lower than the UK
I had francs and wanted some euros

(At least: I haven't found anything better and I've been using it for longer then you've been alive!) :P ;-)
@Tim Anywhere in Europe is cheaper then in the UK...
(let alone the London area!)

Tim
yeah :(
Oh dear london is just what!? I mean it's expensive enough that there are different uni grants to live there

2:18 PM

@Tim I used to get bombarded by job offers to come work in the city until I started replying: your office is at whereverstreet and rent is x so my salary should be 4*x to rent or 3*x to buy...

you want more than that? luxury!

@fossfreedom What is that?
Your flat 15 years ago?

that is a £480 per month shed in a lounge - bargain!

@fossfreedom 480 a month?

2:19 PM
yep

Wow.
London prices are really insane.

agreed london prices are just mad

@fossfreedom for the white shed in the background?

Tim
yep that's pretty standard

2:20 PM
@Fabby yep

@fossfreedom Didn't they find a few people living behind coffeemachines in Heathrow a few years back?

(and they turned out to be employees there?)

£500 under the stairs in london

hg8
@fossfreedom is that harry potter room

2:21 PM
bbl

Tim
@hg8 that is a genuine rentable room

@hg8 480£/month bedroom.

Tim
where I like a studio flat (so a building) is about £700 per month
so where I live isn't cheap either

@Fabby 48297.04 Indian Rupee

Tim
Cambridgeshire, and a fairly posh part of Cambridgeshire :P

hg8
2:22 PM
@fossfreedom @Fabby how much m2 is that ? Is it even legal?

@hg8 that would not be legal here...

hg8
@Fabby would not be legal in europe no?

to rent out something, you need a separate toilet per renter.
5 people in one house? 5 toilets at least.
Scrap that!
1 toilet per contract!
So a family of 5 can have one toilet.

Tim
Yeah there are lots of rules and the fire safety is tricky

5 separate contracts need 5 toilets.

Tim
2:25 PM
and then we have laws about house tax making money and you have to pay tax on the earning (2x tax) etc

kos
@Seth Could you reopen this? askubuntu.com/q/691765/380067

@Tim Where does all this tax money go? Buckingham Palace?

hg8
9m2 minimum in france. In europe too?

@kos why?

@kos I can vote to reopen: you can put it in the re-open queue by editing it...

Tim
2:26 PM
@Fabby ahh now that's interesting. The Queen costs 60p per tax payer per year. But her properies being rented earn us each £2.40 per year, i.e. we make a profit of £1.80 a year I think

@kos (leave a good comment for the edit)

ah, I see the comment now.

@Tim Wow!

Tim
the video is cool!

2:28 PM

@cl-netbox he's watching the video :P

@Tim understand ... :)

kos
@Fabby Why 20K? It shouldn't take less than 5 250 reputation user, or does it?

@Kos and you should think about installing the chat room script

kos
@Fabby Thanks

2:35 PM
@kos Is it 5K???
lemme check.

@Fabby Fabby ... your lawn ? ... not from your server on Mount Everest ? :D

kos
Always praying Linus of the Torvalds and Richard of the Stallmans when things get risky :)

@kos Oh god! It's become a meme!

@kos This is @Fabby origin stuff - so we truly have to pray for ... Fabby of the Fabbies ! :D

kos
@Fabby I don't know, but I think I'm stealing it. :D
@cl-netbox Those are different occasions though. When your hard disk is damaged and stuff...

2:57 PM
@Fabby better let us stop praying and switch to THINKING ! =)

@cl-netbox That'll be the next meme:

@Fabby and ... what ... now ... ? :D

kos
@Fabby Are you making those?

@Fabby thanks

3:03 PM
@kos yeah...

Q: The pro forma comments come across as quite blunt - could they be changed?

TimI'm wondering if there could be some changes to the pro-forma comments from the "Recommend Deletion" button in the Low Quality Posts review queue. This question is asking for suggestions for what would sound better. Currently they seem really blunt, especially to a new user. This is comment...

@Ravan You're welcome.

@Ravan yup.

@kos a funny question this package thing :)

3:06 PM

3:23 PM
Hey @wsw! Did you edit your question?

Hi @wsw

hg8
@all Question : Do you think Ubuntu 15.10 is not recommended for newbies ?

Tim
@hg8 nah it's fine

@hg8 I like LTS and I'm not a newbie...

Tim
I've used Ubuntu for 4 years and I use LTS

3:26 PM
It's an RC, not a beta, but not really for beginning users...
Smoke! BRB

Tim
mostly because this computer is my "production" computer - i.e. I don't have time if it goes wrong to fix it.
So stable is better

typically LTS makes sense for newbies

Q: Abortable task on startup on Ubuntu 14.04

Per von ZweigbergkI have a VM that needs to boot up, perform a specific task, and then shut itself down. It also needs to be possible to abort the special startup sequence to get the "regular" bootup behaviour, i.e. either before the application run, or before the shutdown. I've tried to accomplish this using th...

The pages are i wrote.

@xiaodongjie is that all the stuff you certified???

@Fabby yes.

Tim
But 14.04 is no easier to use than 15.10 tbh

3:29 PM
@hg8 that's a link to a user...

hg8
@Tim I agree.

@xiaodongjie Do you work for Canonical or so??? ;-)
(or you've just got too much time on your hands...)
:P

I'm not a Canonical member.

wsw
@Seth I will do it tonight when I get home

@Fabby I'm just Ubuntu Member.

hg8
3:30 PM
@Fabby I corrected it

@xiaodongjie Actually, now that you're here,
what License does your version of Sticky notes use???

@Fabby yes, it's commercial. Private now, but open source.

(It, says "proprietary" in the Ubuntu SW list)

@Fabby yes, right.
@Fabby Do you use the Sticky Notes?

@xiaodongjie No, because I didn't know what license it was, so I didn't download yet...

3:33 PM
yes

if I see "proprietary" I normally don't touch...

@Tim Totally agree ! :)

@Fabby are you a Ubuntu Member?

Tim
brb

@xiaodongjie no, Just Launchpad...

3:34 PM
yes.

Anyway, I desperately need a smoke!
BRB!

yes, soon.

@wsw That package wasn't installed using apt-get or any dkpg frontend, unless you used some debian repository. Can you figure out how it got installed in first place?
A solution would probably be reinstalling it using dpkg and then removing it again (always through dpkg)

wsw
3:54 PM
@kos: I am pretty sure it was installed using apt-get. It's possible it was installed before I upgraded Ubuntu to 15.04 .

kos
@wsw There's no package under that name though: packages.ubuntu.com/…. I could find it on the debian repository. Probably that's the problem then, it was there before an now it has been removed.
