(so quickly)

@Fabby I remember it because my memory is still that of a young man in his mid thirties.
Or, perhaps I use the search field at the top right.

Mod's prerogative?

@Fabby Nah, top right.
Every chat room has one.

@terdon I stopped using the SE search after a couple of weeks because it never turned up anything useful
It seems I should start using it again.

True, but it's kinda OK for chat.

12:09 AM
@HeatherBrown those are fun
@HeatherBrown oh, then we made shock boxes at school, high voltage low amperage - enough to clench your fist - we would hold hands in a circle, one person would hold the wire another touch the box to ground the loop ;p

That requires a lot of trust.

12:29 AM
yeah, the box had a transformer, resistor, small circut, fuse, and was made of steel and a switch and wire on the front
i still have it if you want to see

Sure!

they would never let kids bulid things like that today...

1:18 AM
sup @Mateo

hi @hbdgaf

had my conversation today. it sounds a little like they were going to ignore it, but they listened.
the funniest part was that i've never heard someone say "cheers" without a british accent, but I did today. I found it oddly attractive, but now we're neither here nor there.

intresting

i got called sir again, which felt weird too.

oo, there were matcha cookies left over today those should be good to try
@seth i was doing a testimonial on your page, im on my phone though, hope it reads ok

1:28 AM
oh @Seth has a page for testimonials for his membership? where is it?

star wall ;)

hey, anyone planning on buying a Nexus 6P.. this is for you: (Was @Nathan getting one?)

On the way.

@Mateo yeah reads fine :)
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!
ooookay, so after doing more research it seems the 6P isn't as bad as the video shows. Phew. Just don't crack the glass and then burn it ;)
@terdon nope but it's still on the list!
@RPiAwesomeness haha, yes I did.
@Fabby I did! Gave me a good laugh xD

@Seth How do you feel about {*} I met Seth as a young mod on AU. He has really developed as a mod here. Even when I'm on fire I can talk to him. He consistently tries to fix problems and level-headedly tries to sort it out.

1:41 AM
@hbdgaf Works for me :) Whatever you feel is appropriate. (although didn't we meet before I was elected? I've been around since fall of '12)

@Seth huh, something strang about that...

@Mateo Yeah. Initial reactions is like "what the..?!?" and then "waaaaait.. are we sure?"

@Seth We did meet before that. I just needed to leave it there because that's everything I'm absolutely sure of

:)

so @Seth you running for mod?
a flashback for you @Seth

1:49 AM
woo, throwback Friday.
We had some good times in this room :)

Nope, no new phone this year.
Can't even afford a smartwatch right now.
:P

Meh, nbd. I lack the $$$ for a fanceh phone anyways - so flaghip'll probably be like the Nexus 7X by the time I get one

@RPiAwesomeness it is. Turns out it isn't quite accurate though.

@NathanOsman hahaha
that's a good one!

But there was nothing compelling in this year's batch of phones.

@DavidFoerster and flagged for moderator intervention that an answer exists here!
Smoke! BRB

Does anyone know a catch-all question, that can be used as a duplicate reference for questions on how to upgrade the Ubuntu release like askubuntu.com/questions/689165/… ?
The best, I can come up with, is askubuntu.com/questions/458201/….

10:02 AM
@KGIII because you like to watch a lot of stuff getting done without you having to sdo much work?
(and not pay much neither???) :D
@DavidFoerster looking...

@Fabby That is true. That is definitely true. :/

@DavidFoerster The one you have looks ok already...
Las mich ein Andere suchen...
(and feel free to correct my German: I can use the practice) @DavidFoerster

Actually, the month is pretty much over. 'Tis time to see how much I didn't spend and send a gift to Canonical. Or see how much I spent and decide to go for broke tonight.

@KGIII What time is it over there now???

0600 @Fabby.

10:06 AM
@KGIII all-nighter???

@Fabby Yup. I could't sleep. I'm an insomniac and don't like the sleeping pills, they make me feel hung over. I end up staying awake for a couple of days, or more, and then I'll crash for 10 to 12 hours.

@KGIII Wow!
If I ever have a roll-out like in South-Africa (39 hours straight)
I know who to call! :D

@Fabby Heh... That's not too, too bad, I sometimes do 80, 90 hours. Not often but sometimes. Usually, I'll crash no later than after 72 hours unless I get busy and occupied with something else.

@KGIII You're the perfect project resource when the excrement hits the ventilator! ;-)

@Fabby LOL Probably, it was great for rush times when the business was still mine. It does have its perks.
I also figure that I'm way ahead. See, if you sleep eight hours a day then you'll have slept for twenty years by the time you reach sixty.
I'm probably at about fifteen years - an extra chunk of life to experience. Of course, it was in the dark and bored but, hey... Why look a gift horse in the mouth?

10:14 AM
@KGIII :D Good point.

Q: How does one costumize Wingpanel in Elementary OS Freya and Dock?

D3uteriumIs there a way to costumize the wingpanel in eOS? Also how can I alter the dock so that I can get a windows style Taskbar? Thanks in advance, -D3uterium

@Fabby I've had a lot of time to think about it.

@KGIII :D My grandfather used to say:
If you don't smoke, drink and chase women,
you won't live any longer...
... it'll just seem longer!

He was a wise man.

10:39 AM
I want to buy new RAM, is there any way to find out information about the RAM installed right now?

I usually look at the physical chips - most of the time the sticker has all the info you need, if not look up the pin configuration and writing on the chips, # of chips ect...
chips on both sides or not might be important in some edge cases(mostly older computers...)

>_>
lshw/dmesg?

1 hour later…
12:07 PM
@edwardtorvalds sudo lshw -class memory

@Fabby That's almost correct. Only one missing double consonant and a spurious capital letter: „Lass mich eine andere suchen!“

:/ andere is not a noun?
(and thanks!)

No. And it's not a noun-like reference to an indeterminate collections of things.
like "etwas Großartiges"
I don't even remember, how these adjectives turned nouns are called in German.
So, it's a bit like in maths lectures: I remember most of the rules, but I forget their names. :-D

12:34 PM
Hello :)

1:01 PM
\o/

@Seth I'm very good at marketing other people....

@DavidFoerster :D

Heh... This looks an awful lot like homework: askubuntu.com/questions/692236/…

Nür der Deutsche Klub in die "Chat room"!
@KGIII I have a standard comment for that: [I will not post homework questions on Ask Ubuntu!](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MeO65BoP3VU/VLb1Q8JGBPI/AAAAAAAAGxg/‌48tIxC7Yjrg/w426-h237/Homework.gif)

LOL I'm so gonna steal that and use it on this post. ;-)

@KGIII Too late! Already done! :P

1:10 PM
I see that. Sneaky @Fabby
Voted, of course. I approve of that message.

@KGIII Too bad we don't get rep for upvoted comments...
I would have much more rep by now!
(even if it would have been just +1)

@Fabby I just figured out that you get rep for questions. :/ I hadn't really paid much attention to it.

@KGIII yup! onmy +5 for an upvoted question, though...

@Fabby True. I can't find an answer for it, after much searching, so I finally asked. No takers yet but someone voted it up. I guess that I'm not alone.

@KGIII looking...

1:15 PM
(I have no idea how to make them show up like the others do - non-links but an actual title and whatnot.)

@KGIII Oh, I found it already!
ah! then you just paste it all by itself:
askubuntu.com/questions/692221/… if you add anything behind it, all that dissapears.
(on a line)

Cool, thanks.

(even an @KGIII )

The more you know! (And knowing is half the battle!)

@KGIII what version of lubuntu are you on?

1:21 PM
15.10

That's the answer to your question... @KGIII
and duped!
:P
Next time when you need something complex like that do a google search, but add at the end "@oli site:askubuntu.com"

That's a list of what IS installed by default. I want a list of what I installed.

(without the @)
you always end up with nifty answers!
@KGIII ah!
revoking dupe then!

I'll try that. ;) It's still not an answer.
Well, it is an answer. LOL
But not the one I was hoping for - I already knew that one.

Duplicate revoked and upvoted...
@KGIII HOWEVER: there is /var/log/apt/

1:27 PM
@Fabby output does not provide any useful information that I can lookup:

about systemd, if multi-user.target and graphical.target are not loaded, and just network.target is, will I be able to run network commands?

@edwardtorvalds did you sudo?

of course
I copy-pasted your command

That might work - I dunno if that also covers apps installed with GDebi or not. @Fabby. I'll check.

Q: Grab the load average with top

SamulThe command below is grabing only the first load average, I would like to grab all the 3 load average. How can I change this code? top -b -n 3 -d 1 | grep "load average" | tail -n 1 | awk '/load average:/ {printf $10}'

1:29 PM
@Fabby maybe you are not on UEFI system

@KGIII the history.log contains everything you installed...
@edwardtorvalds no I'm not, but that shouldn't matter...

weird I am on Ubuntu 15.10
about systemd, if multi-user.target and graphical.target are not loaded, and just network.target is, will I be able to run network commands?

@Fabby Are you sure? I'm seeing the updates for Opera (installed by .deb and GDebi) but not the actual install. In fact, the update is six days after the date on the original .deb and I know I installed it within seconds of downloading it.
So if a program has never updated - it may not be listed in there if installed by GDebi.

@edwardtorvalds I'm still on trusty... Dunno

maybe my bios dont support this

1:33 PM
@edwardtorvalds download the service manual, open up the PC, look at the labels of the chips!
:P

haha the only way

@KGIII mmmh... (thinking and looking at mine)

what is the difference between, network-online.target and network.target, the former one indicates that all network components are up?

LOL I thought I'd looked there. It's kinda sorta close to what I'm looking for. :/
First listing for Opera:
Start-Date: 2015-10-02 09:40:05
Commandline: aptdaemon role='role-commit-packages' sender=':1.72'
Upgrade: opera-beta:amd64 (32.0.1948.19, 33.0.1990.11)
End-Date: 2015-10-02 09:40:55

@KGIII I don't use gdebi, so ...

1:35 PM
Note the "Upgrade" portion. If I've never upgraded AND installed with GDebi then I'm not sure it will be in that list.

nor deb files...
nor compile myself...

Me either, normally, but I have to check on various things for people. :/

if it's not in the software repository or in a PPA, it's probably not good enough! :P

Or just 'cause it looked nifty and I have the self-control of a child 1/12 my age.

@KGIII hold up your left hand...
then count out loud on your fingers how old you are!
(mentally)

1:37 PM
And?

:P

LOL

I can go back a month with my history.log

Q: How to get a specific column of a string

SamulI want to get the third column of the first row of the output of free command. So far I have this: free | tail -n 1 | NOW I NEED TO PRINTF the second column value How I do that?

@KGIII my bash skills aren't good enough to read the locate database to see what's installed, then compare to the manifest and then join to the history.log
mmmh, maybe I can do it in sqlite...
Interesting problem, but too much work!
nah!

1:40 PM
I was actually just pondering some Perl. :/

@KGIII :D Just read your comment...

Or just manually using a text editor that and filter and do differences. I'd only have to check it once in a while and update it once in a blue moon.

locate DB is the answer to that!

We're pretty close! LOL

yeah, now just do the work!

1:41 PM
Yeah, I'm Googling locate DB now just to see where I'm at.

Does anyone know why I have these (seemingly duplicate) GPG keys in /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/?
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp.gpg~
otto-kesselgulasch_ubuntu_gimp.gpg~
phablet-team-tools.gpg~
phablet-team_ubuntu_tools.gpg~
Can I remove one or the other?
All they seem to do is add _ubuntu_ somewhere in the name, do they do anything differently?
Dangit formatting

I mean, yeah, I use the locate command but I don't actually know what it all does. ;-) This should be fun. I seem to recall something about sed. I'll have to check that too.

@RPiAwesomeness what are the contents?
I don't have dupes in mine...

Of the entire folder?

:D no!
of the files!

Oli
1:44 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Do you regularly manually edit files in there? A ~ suffix is commonly a backup file creating during a save.

cat otto-kessel*

@Oli No, I don't think I ever have

do yyou also have these files without the ~ ?

Yeah
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp.gpg
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp.gpg~
otto-kesselgulasch_ubuntu_gimp.gpg
otto-kesselgulasch_ubuntu_gimp.gpg~
phablet-team-tools.gpg
phablet-team-tools.gpg~
phablet-team_ubuntu_tools.gpg
phablet-team_ubuntu_tools.gpg~

@RPiAwesomeness ok, can you still cat phablet*~

1:46 PM
cat phablet*~ returned nothing.

and otto?

Just cat otto-kesselgulasch* returns something.

ok...
diff them?
diff otto-kesselgulasch-gimp.gpg otto-kesselgulasch_ubuntu_gimp.gpg

No difference on the diff

Is that the cat or the diff?

1:48 PM
The cat
cat otto-kesselgulasch*

@RPiAwesomeness OK, lemme look here for a minute or 2
are both ottos also present in ../sources.list.d
(with a list extension instead of gpg?)

$ ls | grep otto
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list.distUpgrade
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list.save
otto-kesselgulasch-ubuntu-gimp-vivid.list
otto-kesselgulasch-ubuntu-gimp-vivid.list.save

cat those.

So, is it possible the _ubuntu_ ones were created during the upgrade?

That's what it looks like from this side...

1:52 PM
Aha.
otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list is empty
$ find . -size 0c | grep otto
./otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list.save
./otto-kesselgulasch-gimp-trusty.list

I think you've got your answer???

Possibly!
Let's hope anyways

ok, well now you know which one you can rename and if it doesn't break anything in a weeks time, you can delete...

And it's going to save you a TON of diskspace! (NOT!)
>:-)

1:54 PM
ikr
:P

@RPiAwesomeness If you convert it to a question, I'll answer...

@Fabby Will do

at least I get something out of my work!

Q: how can i get all of packages repository for ubuntu server 12.04

Yopi HardiantoI am new with Ubuntu. I want to setup a local repository for Ubuntu 12.04, because i don't have internet access on my laptop. I downloaded repository using local link(mirror ini indonesia) but some of repository error, does have a link or etc for download. Thanks for response (in Advance).

He wants to download the ENTIRE repository.
Like, all of it.

2:03 PM
@RPiAwesomeness All ~ files in /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ are empty, same here

@NathanOsman Would know about that, he runs an apt squid proxy

That's just crazy talk! I like it.

@KGIII It's because he has limited internet bandwidth, it just saves him bandwidth in the end to only download the updates once

Only if he uses less bandwidth in his updates than he uses to download everything in the repository, yes? @RPiAwesomeness
I wonder how large the entire repository is. I'm gonna Google that.

Yeah, but since he has like 3-4 PCs that all run Ubuntu, it saves him bandwidth by only downloading the updates once to his local server
Then his PCs are set up to download from that local server

2:07 PM
It's like 500 GB.

Wowzerz, that's a lot of data

In 2012.
He's gonna be a while to make that economical or efficient.

@RPiAwesomeness you can remove all, after that, run sudo apt-get update and import missing keys with, e.g. sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 00A6F0A3C300EE8C
apt-get update shows the missing keys
He @Serg

@A.B. hellow ^_^

halloween?

2:12 PM
Yeah, halloween, but . . . I don't quite care . . . . @A.B. @Fabby in addition to the "I will not post homework questions on askubuntu" meme, I suggest

@Serg =)

As for halloween , I don't quite have plans for it, except spend this day at work, probably won't have anything done again, and then go home, and sleep . . . or watch youtube till I fall asleep :D

According to Jeff, the guy in the lobby, we've actually got kids who come stomping through begging for candy - in a hotel. So, I've got to stock up on candy for 'em. I should get 'em all a toothbrush.

@KGIII that's actually very thoughtfull ! Candy + toothbrush or toothpaste. Restaurants should do something like this - free toothbrush and paste for orders over 10$
jotting that down for myself if I ever open a restaurant

@Serg you're too fast for me

2:25 PM
I'll probably go to Target, buy a bunch of candy, and a stack of those travel packs of toothpaste and a brush. I could probably just ask the hotel, they have them in my bathroom.

@A.B. hehe, am I ? I'm a pretty slow and lazy guy actually

=)

@Oli I actually chuckled aloud at your answer to the guy wanting to download the entire repo.

2:46 PM
@Zacharee1 thank you for my new wallpaper
