4:01 PM
Ah I found it on Launchpad: launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/i386/libboost1.42-dev/… (we're talking about Precise though)

@Fabby Do you stay in 16

kos
And yes, it was deleted

16
B 16
Me B 15

kos
@wsw I'm not sure if there would be downsides in installing that version and then remove it.

@kos welcome home

wsw
4:15 PM
@kos I've been upgrading my Ubuntu every 6 months. Hence a lot of these leftover packages are from previous versions of Ubuntu. Maybe I'll just give up cleaning up because it's taking too much work.
@kos Ubuntu 15.04 would not let me install the old version of libboost
$ sudo apt-get install libboost1.42-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libboost1.42-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libboost1.42-dev' has no installation candidate
@kos it's annoying because I have so many uninstalled versions of old packages showing up in dpkg. For Boost, I have version 1.42 all the way up to 1.55. Maybe I will do a new installation at some point.

user139252
What should I do on Wily now?

user139252
I kinda like MATE as my DE.

That reminds me I need to fix my plymouth theme.

Tim
@HeatherBrown hmm GNOME

user139252
I have GNOME on my personal laptop. KDE 5 on my desktop. This one is my work laptop.

Tim
4:30 PM
Hmm for work - XFCE
good for getting things done

user139252
I tried that yesterday before MATE, but it was gross.

@HeatherBrown try a different shell :p

user139252
I like MATE now :P. What else should I install for productivity? :P

user139252
Also, LibreOffice 5 is nice. I like it.

a different shell!
(not graphical shell..)

4:33 PM
Try fish.

Tim
Love libre office 5
But, I'm not liking inkscape 0.98
I was on 0.48
and it's soo different

user139252
I'll try it out right now.

@jokerdino I liked fish, but it didn't support !! and && and I couldn't get over that. Now I use fizsh :P
(a fish frontend to zsh)

@565656 No, in 33, why?
@HeatherBrown tox! GIMP! atom!

@Seth lol, sometimes, bash is more than enough for most things

user139252
4:46 PM
@Fabby Got GIMP. Trying Inkscape.

@HeatherBrown gufw! gtask, CCSM, ambient noise, smartctl, figlet

@Seth - just reading your wiki - excellent! --- must remember myself to apply for ubuntu membership sooner rather than later

@HeatherBrown Could you give me some feed-back on InkScape??

user139252
@Fabby I've got toilet instead of figlet :P

@HeatherBrown Is it better then figlet?
(never did a feature comparison)
@Rinzwind o/

4:49 PM
hey

Tim
@Fabby Inkscape is fabby :P

user139252
@Fabby It's about the same, really... Inkscape is funny. Not liking it.

@jokerdino indeed xD

Tim
o/

@fossfreedom You should! You are much more qualified than I am!

4:50 PM
@Tim Huh?
@Seth Then, so is everyone here in the chat room!
(sorry, but that was an open door!) ;-)

o_O

user139252
I do like that toilet puts you into a mode that allows for continuous input.

Tim
@HeatherBrown umm?
@Fabby Inkscake is really good :P

user139252
If you run figlet, you can do figlet "Text" to show text

@Tim :D :D :D :P

user139252
4:51 PM
If you just do figlet, nothing happens.

Ah....

user139252
With toilet, you run toilet and it lets you send multiple things through it, one right after the other

better testing....
mmmh...
not compelling enough...
OK, OIlet has better colour filters!
+1

user139252
Yeah, that too.

user139252
It also tries harder to break a line at the end of a word

4:55 PM
@HeatherBrown oh, and toilet still allows you to run the figlet command!
(backwards compatible)

user139252
Yeah, toilet is basically just an expansion to figlet.

thanks for that tip.

user139252
You can use all the figlet fonts for toilet, too.

@Tim so how about InkScape?
better then GIMP? Better then mPaint for simple stuff???

user139252
@Fabby Couldn't find atom in the default repos for Wily.

4:57 PM
@HeatherBrown you need a PPA

user139252
@Fabby I found Inkscape confusing.

lemme look

user139252
Is Atom better than gedit?

@HeatherBrown ppa:webupd8team/atom
Erm is Notepad++ better then notepad?

user139252
Yes.

Tim
4:58 PM
atom is better in some ways

On Linux???

Is Ubuntu better then Mac OSX?

Tim
I like gedit tho
@Fabby nope :P

@HeatherBrown there you go!

Tim
Weeeel
Depends what I wanna do :P

4:59 PM
@Tim Apple is an overpriced piece of excrement! (for all of their products)

user139252
@Fabby Syntax high-lighting? Auto indentation for Python files?

@Fabby did you reply to my bug?

@HeatherBrown Python? What's Python?

@Fabby I love the way you feel about Apple! My feelings too! :D

user139252
@Fabby One of the most versatile scripting languages.

user139252
5:00 PM
@Terrance I'm pretty sure that's how 99.9% of the people in here feel.

@Fabby the guy calls himself "Steve Langasek (vorlon)".

@NathanOsman Sorry, didn't see...

@HeatherBrown I will have to agree with you. :D

@NathanOsman Nah!

No, that's fine. I just wondered if the second reply was written by you.

5:01 PM
You know my real name!

:P
Oh right.

Nah!
@NathanOsman There's more then one Vorlon...
@HeatherBrown last thing I heard it had COBOL-like indentations...
can't make 16k one-liners...
Correct?

user139252
@Fabby It's been a while since I played with COBOL...

@HeatherBrown Does the position in which you type something in Python matter?

user139252
Blocks are indented by 4 spaces each

5:05 PM
@HeatherBrown I don't want it!
:P
Go is still next on my list!
(unless someone can prove to me that it's worse)

user139252
So, if one line is indented 4 spaces already, and you put "if this == that:", the next line will be indented 8 spaces.

user139252
Atom handles that for you :D

@Fabby yes

user139252
You can do some things on one line though...

@HeatherBrown nah, not interested...

user139252
5:07 PM
if Fabby == Awesome: print "Fabby is awesome!" would work as one line.

The only thing I do with positional languages is to convert them...
Last time I read COBOL, I converted it so C (and it's probably still running as it was for some financial institution)

how to find out which mode systemd is running in?

user139252
I find it a lot less confusing than Java, what with all of its brackets and semicolons and doo-dads.

Same as I said during a job interview: Last time I used an AS/400 was to get its data out to convert it to Windows! :D

@edwardtorvalds mode?

5:09 PM
yup, there are two modes, system and user

@HeatherBrown ...and the fact that Java is very verbose.

@HeatherBrown Also a non-compilable language...

@edwardtorvalds look like that's more for testing...

5:11 PM
then lets test :)

user139252
You can run systemd --test

@NathanOsman Erm, how about the edit bug/feature?

"up" doesn't work anymore?

If I disable the script, it works further in the past I've noticed in the mean time...
so, yes it kinda works...
(but not to the max)

Hm... that's odd.
I'll have to take a look at that.
Ah.
I see what you mean.

5:14 PM
yeah, disabled: more history.

It "jumps" over some entries.

off-by-one-error?

Tim
@Fabby Let's have a race :P I'm gonna give you a Mac running Ubuntu and I will have a mac running OSX :P Who can install everything needed and edit a 20 minute clip into 4 clips each 3 minute long? ;)

@Tim you will win

user139252
@Tim You already lose at math.

5:22 PM
And I'll beat you both with a PC running Ubuntu :P
(Provided downloading doesn't count.)

user139252
Also, most Macs come pre-loaded with video editing software, so that is an unfair advantage. A better test would be to have each run through a series of increasingly CPU-intensive simulations and see which performs better on the same hard-ware.

Yup, iMovie.
(...which just got an update for editing 4K video.)

@Tim Let's have a race: I'll give you a 10 year old MAC running OSX and I'll take a 10 year old PC running lubuntu and let's code and debug and run a 1000 line application in C!

user139252
@Fabby wins :P

:D

user139252
5:27 PM
d:

user139252
:pd:

<-- This guy will pop the popcorn and watch this war! :D

user139252
They're making out.

10 year old mac... that's what, Tiger?
v10.4.

sounds about right

5:28 PM
@NathanOsman nah... it'll have to run OSX... (which it can't)

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is the fifth major release of Mac OS X, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Mac computers. Tiger was released to the public on April 29, 2005 for $129.95 as the successor to Mac OS X Panther. Some of the new features included a fast searching system called Spotlight, a new version of the Safari web browser, Dashboard, a new ‘Unified’ theme, and improved support for 64-bit addressing on Power Mac G5s. Tiger shocked executives at Microsoft by offering a number of features, such as fast file searching and improved graphics processing, that Microsoft had spent several...
Yup, 2005.

Tim won't even leave the tracks...

If he uses emacs instead of vim, he'll win for sure.

Ah yes, the brushed metal look.

5:29 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Oh hey!
Long time no see.

Hey Nathan :)

Hey @StefanoPalazzo

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo Real programmers send out butterflies...

this suddenly turned into a mod chat room
:-)

5:30 PM
Wow, @jokerdino's here too. This is turning into a nice reunion.
:)

It's not like I go away for 5 years and pop up in a random day.

@HeatherBrown good old "M-x butterfly"

@NathanOsman I do come here and lurk on most days.

oh man. I just typed in "M-x butterfly".

@jokerdino Really?
I never see you :P

5:32 PM

Is that an XKCD reference?

@NathanOsman Our shifts don't happen to overlap, unfortunately.

@StefanoPalazzo Is that Mac?

5:33 PM
Oh no, my cover has been blown
@jokerdino yeah
I'm at work

"work"

yeaaah
Just started a new job last month

Nice.

Hey anyone here interested in an invitation to keybase.io?
I have a couple left

I have some left too :)

5:40 PM
I thought there would be more people on it

Yeah, and they've been in beta for quite some time.

They are doing a great job solving a problem no one has. (:

@Seth: Lots of stars, but not many testimonials! ;-)

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo I would like one :D

user136984
Is Ubuntu One still operational in any sense?

5:44 PM
@StefanoPalazzo all they need to do is build a social network around it :)
(Yes, I'm kidding.)

@HeatherBrown you got it. I need your email address. either post it here, if you want, or send me an email at hello@palazzo.link

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo I don't mind if others have my email. It's hbrown0579@gmail.com

should be there shortly

user139252
+10 Me points for anyone who deciphers the meaning behind that string of numbers :P

They're all odd numbers.
(Well, except 0.)

5:46 PM
May 79? surely not.

user139252
If you add them to a single digit, you get 3. If you subtract them starting at the 9, you get -3.

user139252
I like things like that.

And you were only going to give us 10 points for that? :P

kos
@wsw Actually I meant to install it using the deb package in the link I posted (launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/i386/libboost1.42-dev/…) and to remove it using dpkg, e.g.: sudo dpkg -i libboost1.42-dev_1.42.0-4ubuntu3_i386.deb and sudo dpkg -r libboost1.42-dev; if a reinstallation is what you're after in any case, maybe it's worth a shot.

It's also the first four digits after the decimal point of -(gamma-log(2))/2.
:P

user139252
5:54 PM
Yes, they are :D

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo Gets the points for the math.

Yey! now I'm off to google, to figure out what a gamma-log is!

user139252
...

user139252
NO POINTS FOR YOU! D:

5:57 PM
@Fabby :(

user139252
You can now look me up at keybase id heatherb

I looked it up. It's just a (log(2) - gamma) / 2.

@Seth Are you looking for testimonials yet?

@ParanoidPanda yes, it's an openID provider
@NathanOsman starwall ;)

/facepalm
I'll add one, don't worry :)

6:00 PM
;p
@StefanoPalazzo haha that's true isn't it. I hadn't considered that.

Top secret stuff. Sorry.

although I guess you could use it has a way to bypass IRL key signing? I dunno

@Seth that's the idea. I have been to these key-signing parties. They are ridiculous.

I've never been to one.
And I need to attend one sometime with Debian maintainers present.
IIRC, I can't upload to Debian unless a couple of them sign my key.

so you just use your social identities instead. If i've worked with you on github for a while, that's a great basis for trust. Better than your id card or drivers license at a key signing party.

6:03 PM
^--- this

yup.

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo So, how do I decrypt that with keybase, now?

at this level we're all more online identities than we are real life ones..
@HeatherBrown keybase decrypt.

You can also hit the big decrypt button on the site (which I like because it works on my phone)

But you have to have uploaded your private key to the site for that to work.

6:05 PM
ah, true.

IMO it's not a huge deal since your key is encrypted and all the decryption is done locally, but others disagree :)

The only reason not to do it is this: an attacker has all the time in the world to guess your passphrase.

I had keybase generate a key for me.

@StefanoPalazzo true.

I wasn't going to upload the key that I actually use for stuff to keybase. So I had it generate one for me as well.
This mac that I'm using at work has BitDefender antivirus. so I know I'm safe!
4

user139252
6:08 PM
@StefanoPalazzo @NathanOsman I also had them create one for me.

user139252
I don't think anyone is guessing my passphrase.

Unfortunately the only easy way to move your key from one machine to another (as I found out) is to upload your private key :/

I started working on an app to simplify key management a couple years back. Unfortunately, I never finished it :(

I made this when I was unemployed: github.com/sfstpala/zpy
let's you encrypt stuff with your SSH keys

Cool.

6:10 PM
I didn't know the make system supported python.
but maybe I'm just showing my extreme ignorance :p

make does everything
having a makefile in your python project absolutely wonderful :)

debian/rules uses make.
I even found a guy using make for a Go program :P

user139252
What does tracking do?

It's kinda like "follow" in other social networks.

@HeatherBrown When I track you, I sign your identity (or your identity at that particular point in time)

user139252
6:13 PM
I tracked you.

So I'm asserting that you are who you say you are based on the social profiles you put in

user139252
I think

6:17 PM
Yup, I can decrypt that.

user139252
Any way to encrypt a large amount of text into a file that I can send to a user to decrypt?

You can use the command-line client I think.

user139252
Yep, found it.

Instructions are on the right-hand side of this page.

keybase encrypt nathan attack-plan.txt -o shopping-list.asc

6:19 PM
attack_plan.txt O_o

A common trope in cryptography circles, officer, nothing to worry about. no secret plans to break into quora's servers at all.

Hey cool, Keybase has a Go client.

user139252
@NathanOsman justbeamit.com/cu5na

I'm on Windows ATM, so I'll have to decrypt that later.

user139252
You're on an ATM?

user139252
6:25 PM
How'd you access the chat?

I just walked around the corridors. It's half past seven on a friday night and there are still a lot of people in the office.
that's either a very good sign or a very bad one.

user139252
Very bad.

user139252
It means you can't be silly.

Lol.

6:34 PM
to be fair it's more fun to be silly when my coworkers are around

@Whaaaaaat LOL
sometimes that's me.

I have no idea how to use Git, but I always try to make it pretty

Eminent people of India from their official account are doing rubbish on twitter what does it mean please tell me?

Hey, Randall Munroe seems to be on AU (or uses it). Look at the mouseover text:

user139252
How do you log-in on Git command-line?

6:37 PM
@HeatherBrown What are you trying to do?

user139252
Figure things out.

user139252
Probably best to just keep using browser

@HeatherBrown you take your ssh public key (cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub, run ssh-keygen first if you don't have one) and paste it into github at github.com/settings/ssh

I use the browser to find what I am looking for, then I use the git clone command to get the item I want.

@terdon Well, I don't know what happened there but I swear I got a different mouseover text referencing a particular AU user and "+1". I swear!

wsw
6:39 PM
@kos I see. I will think about it. I already have the latest installed (v 1.55.0).

@terdon comic number or direct link?

@Whaaaaaat ?

@terdon what does the mouseover have to do with AU? (xkcd.com/1441)

Am I imagining things? I coudl swear we used to have one-boxing for xkcd

I think that's Gaming.SE or Programmers.SE

6:43 PM
Guy's I'm gonna go home.

@Whaaaaaat Nothing at all. There must have been some browser bug and it was showing me text from the AU page. It changed when I switched focus away from the tab.

@StefanoPalazzo thanks for stopping by.

have a lovely day, evening, or time of day in your particular time zone, and see you soon. :)

Almost afternoon here.

@StefanoPalazzo We do, you need to copy the image's URL, not the comic's.

6:45 PM

@terdon that's just image oneboxing :P

too bad it doesn't do the hover text

#BrokeTheBlueStreak

@Whaaaaaat Yes.

user139252
6:46 PM
@StefanoPalazzo I'm having my students make me a new Pokemon game.

user139252
I mean...

user139252
I'm teaching my students how to modify a ROM and inject their own pieces of code so that they can learn valuable programming skills.

I thought you taught english
that is pretty cool!

@HeatherBrown PokeROM?

user139252
@Terdon What?

Q: How to attach Link

Rahul RajI had seen using people link in their answers.Please let me know how to do that so can I answer in an effective way.A snapshot is added to explain which type of linking I am talking about. Actually the way "Announcer,Booster"have been linked I want to learn.

user139252
@StefanoPalazzo On Fridays, I advise a club of students interested in the sciences (particularly computer sciences).

@HeatherBrown New Pokemon game + modifying ROM = PokeROM.

user139252
We've so far: established our own VPN, built arcade machines out of Raspberry Pis, learned basic Python Programming, and built a few small electronic devices (radios, synthesizers, what-not)

@terdon you embedded the image so the tooltip isn't there -.-

@HeatherBrown that's fantastic. It was a teacher of mine who got me interested in programming, so they are pretty much responsible for my career.

6:52 PM
@StefanoPalazzo later!
xkcd does onebox though:

charging my phone before I go :)

with tooltips!

oneboxing doesn't work over https though, that might have caused the confusion.

user139252
Has anyone used the "Wish" shopping app before?

6:57 PM
no

user139252
It seems too good to be true... I don't know if I can trust it.

it looks a bit spammy to me. Can't put my finger on it
the prices are preposterous

user139252
Yeah, it's like 6 bucks for a dress that would cost 20...

and there's a lot of fake stuff (i.e. fakes of brand name products)
