9:01 AM
who here is stalking my comments? >:D
hey @jokerdino are you keeping my trust in you up? >:D

@Rinzwind yep. What happened? :D

I got told i am not allowed to code software where I work... we got an audit on our software :D
and if it passes we gonna get tons of money :-D

Oooh~ Awesome.
Is it enterprise software or consumer stuff?

funny thing... there is 9 other companies doing the same for the same piece of the pie and we got ahead of them big time
cuz we got the document outlining where they are going to look for _O-
enterprise.
we made a webbased version for car maintenance software

@Rinzwind eheh. that sounds great.
undercutting the competition is always awesome news.
@Rinzwind ooh. so you guys target the car service folks.
and good call on going web.

9:06 AM
besides that we made it 100% webbased and going to implement a bugzilla into it too (1 of the points is to track the software)
Yeah. 5 of the 10 are still using PC install software :X

@Rinzwind pretty pretty.

it's been crazy the past year :-X thing is... we are 10 (incl. my boss who codes most of our software)

usage details generally help making them better.

and beside him and me there is 1 other that can code JS .......

@Rinzwind much easier to update software coz of web IMO.
Wait, 10 people coding a badass enterprise software? you guys are too productive :P

9:09 AM
well... it is mostly 1 person (my boss ;-) ) I follow him coding new stuff as quick as I can be he IS badass:D :D
he also has stupid ideas though ;-)

haha. looks like the badass compensates the stupid ideas

plus we have our old codebase and clients that take up the time for the other 7 here ;=-)
he codes with hard coded paths in software :D thing is: he has not got the time to make it flexible. So I took that upon me ;-)
you know... he is interested in new stuff work and does not care how _O-

Yeah, that's one thing I love about team work. Everyone helps :P
sometimes, it helps. sometimes, not.

the other 7 got told off the other day... he expects them to learn sql, JS. And wants them to learn to at least read perl.
guess what language we used before this .... you get 3 attempts. If you get it in 1 you get 30 rep from me and loose 10 rep per false one :DDDDD

wut -_-

9:14 AM
guess what language we used to code are old software before this ;-)

well, it cant be JS and Perl. C and related are out too

@RolandiXor I love editing spam out :( you gonna take away my fun?
@jokerdino correct ;-)

that leaves us with Java

nope
you get a hint when the next one is wrong too :D

:D
It's not the easiest thing to guess :P
Wait a sec. Basic.

9:16 AM
o

:P

excellent @jokerdino :D

I should have looked at your profile earlier ;)

now you know why they got told off ;-)

> Coder. JS, Perl, Python, Basic

9:17 AM
:D
well most think I mean Visual Basic :X

Yeah, if they are still stuck with basic, they ought to be told off.
lol basic and visual basic aren't the same, that much i know.

our old clients are still using our software but most we get out of them is a service contract
sometimes a bit of coding but that's it... 1 of the downsides of making 100% customized software: when it is done like the client wants it... it is done.
the biggest 3 that use our old version are already being transformed to webbased version of their software :D
1 sec.

so, you guys are maintaining different software for each client? that sucks

nope
well sorta
our finance and production components are as is
sales is customized. but 90% is based on settings that are general. But we do code documents (like invoices) on a per system bases

well, are you working on a solution that is not unique?
the webbased one that is ^

9:22 AM
o/

o/

The webbased one for our old software is going to be built for 1 client and the others have to abide by it ;-)
unless they pay for us to make something extra ;-)
lol... my boss says yes to anything :D :D

@Rinzwind yep that's the way. force them :P
@Rinzwind hey, your boss sounds too awesome.

ah thing is ... my boss has better ideas than our clients so we are always on the good side ;-)
he is he is.
I am on my ... 2013-1992 is ... 22nd year now
and there are 2 more here that have been working here longer than me :X and 1 that came working here 4 months after me

wow, working for several years.

9:26 AM
2 rep awarded. took longer than expected cuz I found lots I already upvoted :D

@Rinzwind :P lol thanks.

Q: Add custom shortcut by command line

BenCesWe're working on a script where we need the following: disable all keyboard input (also shortcuts) enable 2 keys to be pressed (Alt B in our case) run the following when Alt + B is pressed: /home/administrator/bash.sh this has to be done in a bash script, no clicking! Also running on Ubuntu...

homework! :X

Hm that question.. programmers.SE is not the right place.

yeah I saw that :=)

Yeah, either try U&L or SO

9:31 AM
I am not allowed to edit that out

Hm, you want me to edit it?

sure! massacre away!
:=)

actually SU
bash isn't real programming

some might not get any further than bash :-D

oh, I haven't, I know a little python but not enough

9:34 AM
Eh, edited it to SU

bash is more my style since I just string stuff together ;p

@JourneymanGeek hack the answer together? :>

@jokerdino: you HAVE seen my most upvoted SU answer right?

You mean the answer?
104
A: What's the quickest way to count the number of each character in a file?

Journeyman Geekgrep -o foo.text -e A -e T -e C -e G -e N -e -|sort|uniq -c Will do the trick as a one liner. A little explanation is needed though. grep -o foo.text -e A -e T -e C -e G -e N -e - greps the file foo.text for letters a and g and the character - for each character you want to search for. It also ...

yeah, I did

9:38 AM
Yeah, that one I know. Waiting for your answer. ^_^

actually, better bash scripting (l00ps!) and network stuff is probably my next hol projects

9:52 AM
damn nice bash'ing @JourneymanGeek :D

@Rinzwind: easy to write, but hardly efficient ;p

Efficiency sometimes needs to take a backseat. Results are often more important.
or as my boss often stated "it works on my machine"
yeah if you hardcode pathnames it works indeed... on your machine :D

where is @jrg
@jrg!!!?

10:08 AM
we are not good enough @mojo706 :=D

@Rinzwind I didn't say that
are you interested in Ruby perhaps?

nope >:) I have my hands full helping ppl here getting used to sql and JS. No time to learn a language myself :X

and that's why I'm calling jrg

and he is ignoring you >:D

given the time-difference - jrg should be safely tucked up in bed.

10:12 AM
and why are you sideways @mojo706 ?

I actually don't know how that came about. Originally it was right side up

flip the sides around.

@jokerdino what do you mean?

Making omelettes here.

sunny side up ftw

hey @Takkat

Takky!! wie geht's?
hmm he ignores me too :(

@Rinzwind busy as hell here - all these important stuff sighs
Why can work items never wait until tomorrow?

same here >:D
STARSHIPS WHERE MEANT TO FLY

But in order to fly they have to be built first...

10:31 AM
hey we had a big step towards that goal y-day

I read you have the spanish inquisition at your workplace - my sympathy @Rinzwind

One of the new moons of Pluto is going to be names Vulcan so now Spock had a birthplace :=D
yeah audit in progress.

fascinating!
We should build one of @RolandiXor 's ships to visit Vulcan.

The internet connection being a b
am I allowed to curse here?

@mojo706 Nope. I got a ban hammer.

10:35 AM
no curses here - unless you want to get banned.
jinx

@mojo706 yes but do not use english curse words >:D

small word --> big hammer

:( warning heeded

and try to not use ones others might recognize >:D
takkat is german...

but what is the point of cursing then
if no one understands

10:36 AM
We have more than 4 letters in our swearwords ;)

so sch*** is out ;-)

@Rinzwind better idea: invent your own so that you know you are cursing but can defend that they are not curse words since they only exist in your head!
BTW, no its not cool to curse on any language while on chat

hmm jokerdino does not have a location inserted :(

@Rinzwind flagged :P

lol

10:37 AM
@Rinzwind Indian / Singapore

since we are getting starships soon we could start with klingon :=D
always good to learn their language since we gonna meet them soon

Klingons should never be addressed with their own swearwords!

@Takkat thought those were always to be taken as compliments...

why is this unbrokenspectrum.wordpress.com/2013/02/05/… the last blogpost @jokerdino ?

@Rinzwind Yeah, too lazy to update the results. I'll get to it tonight.

10:40 AM
slacker >:) do it now

:P

lol
I HATE windows caching :P

I hate CTRL-ALT-DEL when I'm on the phone.

10:59 AM
hey @jokerdino what if I want a stable build of unity_tweak tool?
?
do I still add the daily-ppa?

@mojo706 yeah that's the stablest build :>

oh ok TY

thanks :D

@jokerdino it says daily unstable :(

yeah. it is a bit unstable.

11:15 AM
plus it says 404 Not Found. Please check out the issue

are you on 12.04?

yes

well, we dont have a version for 12.04 :(

:( its from 12.10 upwards?

yeah
brb

11:17 AM

A 10 year old chinese girl ate her own hair for the past few years and had a 9 centimeter ball of hair in her stomach that someone had to surgically remove...

link?

can you read dutch? >:)

11:25 AM

omg - this is entirely off topic here... :/

So that's what inspired catwoman!

lol

And on that note: Heya, folks.

11:27 AM
"Rapunzel, Rapunzel, eat your hair"

@jokerdino Regarding that post you deleted, was it because the question was closed, or did I do something wrong?

@Rinzwind yes, I can.

haha I didnt think it was true

@ObsessiveSSOℲ can I help? link?

11:34 AM
tidying - the dupe Q has that answer there already. Removing the dupe answers will allow auto-redirect to work.

OK, now I understand. The autoredirect was forced for new users before?

not sure I understand "forced" - redirect will not work with questions that have visible answers.

OK.
Thanks!

Q: Ways to run Nautilus with elevated privileges

Desmond HumeWhat are the differences between the following ways to run Nautilus with elevated privileges: a) sudo nautilus b) gksu nautilus c) gksudo nautilus Which should I use?

TAKKAT lunch time! :=D

@Rinzwind why lunch?
Lunch is useless. Makes people go away from Au, lets work wait until afternoon, makes you lazy...
<-- works in an unequal-opportunity lunchless office
Coke is my meal atm.

12:13 PM
Im starving
BBL

Starving is useless. Makes people go away from AU, lets work wait for somebody else, makes you dead eventually...

back :)

Hahahaha @Takkat By me Lunch then
I won't leave just send it to my Paypal

<-- still refuses to have PayPal connecting to his bank account in any way
<-- cancelled his PayPal account after having his email been spammed to death for the mail account he sent them.

hahahaha now I am leaving will be back later after about an hour

12:23 PM
The spam did not stop, they may still send it to there (now its /dev/null).

haha

One long hour eating??? That's luxury pure.

1st I go look for food then cook then eat
:)
BBL

<-- envy people who can also have a nap after lunch (like Peachy)

12:36 PM
I am so pre-nap now but all my work is ahead, waiting to be done.
Let it wait!

go nap
no food anywhere near me
I'll settle for a Fanta

@flabricorn I dislike mint more for personal reasons than technical. The Mint community has traditionally been rude and unhelpful. On the technical side though, they make enough changes to Ubuntu core that it isn't something I could use.
@Seth minitechme is a good guy.
Is on the repo collab for the Ubuntu book.
And Luke and I are aware of our mutual existence. Fun guy.
And finally: what's up @mojo?

@jrg I've never really found the answer why Mint guys insist on going their own way - they really should come under the ubuntu community umbrella :(

Fork all the things.

not a good philosophy to have.

jrg
@fossfreedom pride. But again, I was just telling him my personal reasoning behind my dislike of mint.

Oli
@fossfreedom You could argue the very same about Ubuntu and Debian. They're downstream but they want their independence. Let them have it.

jrg
1:07 PM
@fossfreedom @jokerdino wish some people at work had that attitude. :-P
Ubuntu and Debian isn't a fair comparison though. We have sent stuff upstream. Don't think Mint moves upstream.

They probably also send to Debian.

jrg
They became "popular" because of some ideological differences in late 2010. aka, when unity started getting attention for the 11.04 release.

Yep. That's all they ever did "right".

ye-gads - Unity is just another DE - no need to drop your trousers and set fire to it!

lol
btw, i have some issue with apport crash bugs.
update-notifier and software center crash bugs are getting filed against unity tweak tool
just two of so far but it is still weird

Q: How to syncrhonize Tomboy notes

user218651Since UbuntuOne is shutting down, what service I could use to syncrhonize my Tomboy notes between my android, Windows, and Ubuntu boxes? Without proper sync'ing, i have no incentive to keep using it. Thanks.

man, i feel this guy.

@jrg UbuntuOne is shutting down?

jrg
Ubuntu one note sync is.

personally never found much use for tomboy, gnote sync stuff.

jrg
Man, I loved it. Moved to Evernote and everpad though.

if you want to remember something - just write a google-doc.
hey - that's an idea - change the save API to use googles API - and save the note as a google doc! volunteers anyone?

jrg
2:22 PM
Ew.

Evernote is great, use it all over the place

hey mods
we have links from ubuntu.com to to preseed questions
those should still just work right?
oh nm, it Just Works!

Oli
@JorgeCastro Awesome. I did the one on the Touch wiki front page but didn't think about the others.

yeah
come to think of it, I didn't think of any of the websites at all when we were talking about the tag
I am glad that Just Works, we'd be doomed otherwise
@Oli We should tell new people to just use ubuntu-touch right?
like the engineering team?
(SOrry I wasn't responsive earlier, I was travelling and didn't have a chance to ask David a bunch of the questions about where people should be subscribing)

Oli
2:39 PM
@JorgeCastro Yeah. As I said in the comments, if anybody is subscribed to the mobile tag (in order to see new questions) they'll need to move over as the feeds don't redirect as intelligently (a the feed for "mobile" 404s)

ok, most of them use the email subscription afaik
but I'll send the word out now, ta

Q: Should a question involving proper use of terms be asked in the meta section?

cipricusI have some doubts about a question on the correct use of terminology when talking about video players. So, it may seem that it is about "how to ask a question" and be seen as improper in the main area of the site and more suited for meta. But I think that it is about a matter of fact (what is ...

@Takkat good choice :D

I know - it looks fast and easy to build. Also it must have the anti-gravity feature I could use now (my eyelids!)

All of them have anti-gravity :)
I wouldn't say it's easy to build though because it uses elements that "don't exist" :P

Virtual matter is the future!
"Beam me up to Vulcan" is a piece of case for a ship built of VM.

@BrunoPereira my mom (77) happily uses Ubuntu, your GF is right!

@RolandiXor well, she was impressed that she could search for Brightness and Lock in the dash instead of needing to go to the Control Panel :P

3:35 PM
^_^

- Can I just write brightness and it will take me there?
- Yes
- WOW (^^)

:D
Now if only they would make the Dash perform faster :)

@RolandiXor bah, it performs just fine on a sort of lousy laptop

Not for me :(

i use no blur setting and it is a bit better
dash searches are however relatively slow

3:45 PM
@RolandiXor See the common factor here? (you)

Oh no you don't.

I have the same problem as @jokerdino :)

I actually went ahead and removed my comments.

jrg
@jokerdino likewise.

how do I turn a comment thread into a chat?
I clicked on "turn this into a chat" and then it said "There was an error" and I reloaded the page and it was gone.

@RolandiXor huh, that's funny. You can turn that around and it still makes sense!
Don't spam edits.
