Yes. it is

Honey = bees = bears = <even more> but not dinos

jrg
@Mahesh "the pirate" was trying to eat lunch.

@Takkat are u sure?

who is the pirate?

jrg
5:03 PM
@AnwarShah Dread Pirate Roberts, at your service.
Probably time to change the gravatar back to myself. As smashing as it is, it's not worth it. ;P

good evening

yes, change it

   changetrack is a program to monitor changes to a bunch of files. If
   files are modified one day, and the machine starts working incorrectly
   some days later, changetrack can provide information on which files
   were modified, and help locate the problem.

5:09 PM
@AnwarShah +1

I never used it.

@htorque Rothschild's Porcupine doesn't wokr unfortunately

There is no R name for porcupines :"(

Q: How to know what had done on my computer?

maythuxSometimes other users on my computer use my account. I want to know what did they do on in easy way with GUI. I dont want to read logs and such things. Are there such tools? If yes, please names.

Chromium has a load of improvements delivered today.
*had.

jrg
Oh, that's a very interesting problem.
@Mahesh oh? Anything that hasn't been in chrome beta for a bit?

Webapps were enabled to all I guess, and tabs which have pending updates to be noticed glow slightly...
Messaging integration is better..

jrg
Ohhh, cool. The glowing tabs have been there i think...

5:14 PM
things are working better than they were when I was trying webapps.
umm.. I haven't noticed. dropped prematurely out of webapps testing.
One thing I need to check... desktop notifications.

jrg
@Mahesh DESKTOP NOTIFY!

I got it, lets see if its annoying.
YAY!!!
its solved.
earlier, it used to bug me like for an hour.

sudo apt-get install tiger and zoo

So, it looks all good for now. No need to worry about porblem questions.
@AnwarShah do we have tiger and zoo?

yes
tiger = Report system security vulnerabilities

jrg
5:18 PM
tiger looks useful.

changetrack can send mail for modification in file

Things that dont produce OSD notifications, and which are not captured by any other component of unity also started triggering tab glow. All looks well, except that window focus needs small fix.

jrg
This on precise or quantal?

5:36 PM
Precise.
Thats the surprise. They rolled it in silently.

jrg
Wat.
that shouldn't happen.

umm... I dont have webapps installed..
and after an update today, these features rolled in.

unity will not be a compiz plugin in future, right?

I guesss yes.
not sure about that.

thx
i remember i read that somewhere, but as always lost the link

5:43 PM
@jrg you should be looking for chromium-browser 20.0.1132.47~r144678-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

jrg
@Mahesh you on -proposed?

surprising.. no mention in changelog...

BBL, may be tomorrow

@jrg nope. only security, updates
and there is a build in webapps ppa with the exact version number.

jrg
weird. not doing anything nice for me.
i have the same version too.

5:51 PM
well, except for a 0precise1+webapps7 at the end instead of 0ubuntu0.12.04.1
and I have the Unity webapps integration extension installed and enabled.
My best guess is that the ppa purge was not intelligent enough and did a half-job.

jrg
can someone ding me?

shrugs
@jrg ding!!!

jrg
Didn't work.
Again please?

@jrg dong!!

jrg
nope.
oh well
was worth a shot

5:55 PM
The presence of that extension was responsible for this.

jrg
ok, so it didn't do a clean remove.
meh.

chrome-extension://pmoflmbbcfgacopiikdcpmbiellfihdg
yup.
I didn't expect it to, anyway. :P
ppa-purge is a not so great solution that works at times.
most times i tried, it insists on uninstalling almost everything it finds, leaving me with a lot of unmet deps. Say no when asked, and it deletes the entry from sources.list or sources.list.d, but upon adding the same ppa again, you are bound to encounter a parser error from sources.list.
Those wierd errors on which we have a ton of questions here.
I love the consistency, atleast. :P

1 question.. after remove gnome... do i need to reboot 1st before reinstall?

not necessary IMO
there should be no harm still..

orite then

6:06 PM
but you may want to do sudo apt-get autoclean ;sudo apt-get update before proceeding.

Can you answer this? Can I SSH into a computer using Landscape? http://askubuntu.com/q/188037?atw=1 #ssh

@Mahesh thanks!

this ensures that cache, i.e, already downloaded packages are deleted, and package lists are updated.

😈

If you are doing a reinstall, I assume you dont want the old package to be reinstalled.
but if there are no updates, the same old thing will be re-downloaded.

6:09 PM
im helping one guy on FB. i donno the situation but he wanted to reinstall gnome

ohk. :)

jrg
@Joshua ok, no. I don't want you to stalk me on Google Latitude. ;P
(Trying to remember the last time I had Latitude set up...)

O.o

BBT

6:45 PM
@jrg I can't believe you don't want another stalker...

jrg
@Joshua what can I say, the paparazzi are rather annoying. ;)

@jrg I promise I won't take any pictures of you (at least none that you will know about)

jrg
It's the ones I don't know about that concern me...

Hi all
I want to use my Ubuntu server as a Git server
Which software should I use for that? I already looked at Gitolite, is that any good?

Q: How to change color of the frame of a maximizing window

SteliosSkThough I have read and tried some advises regarding the change of colors in a theme, I found no answer regarding my question, which is: When I drag a window to the left (or right or up) side of the screen an orange frame shows up, indicating the area that the window will occupy. This frame is in ...

I voted it to close as dupe
though the question is narrower
and not exactly dupe
but can be answered with that same answer.
Am I doing it right?

6:57 PM
@AnwarShah Do you know which software I should use for creating a local Git server?

No, sorry

Ok, no problem
I am trying to follow this guide to install Atlassian Fisheye
4. Create a dedicated FishEye user (recommended)

For production installations, we recommend that you create a new dedicated user that will run FishEye on your system. This user:

    Should not have admin privileges.
    Should be a non-privileged user with read, write and execute access on the FishEye home (install) directory and instance (data) directory. These directories are described below.
    Should only have read access to your repositories.

If you created a dedicated FishEye user, ensure you are logged in as this user to complete the remaining instructions.
However I am pretty new to Linux so I must ask
Is it normal to install programs in the home directory of a user?

yes, if you are the only user
as sometimes, we install netbeans in home directory

If you look at the guide steps above
they ask me to create a fisheye user only for using their software
now, I don't understand if I should install it in the home directory or in /usr/local for instance?

ahahaha im surfing askubuntu using wondow$ :3

7:01 PM
In /usr/local the normal fisheye user won't have access...

you can give access using chown and chmod command

but is it normal to do this in e.g. /usr/local?

yeah. we install in that dir too

What is the difference?

@penreturn do you think, i am right in saying this dupe?

7:03 PM
exactly!

@Dude the difference is, /usr/local is owned by root and you need to give some users privilege to write in that dir

@penreturn i don't think that obvious, cause the second question is narrower

Why would you put files there and not in the home directory
Just asking since I am new to Linxu

@Dude to give more users access to that dir.
if user is only one, i'd install in home

7:06 PM
Ok, so it is a shared folder location?

hmmm yup .... ahh

@Dude sort of
but not exactly as windows shared folder imo

Dang... it is 2pm already...

<-- 3 am here T..T

1 am here

7:08 PM
@penreturn shouldn't you be in bed then???
Oh wait I forgot you are Tony Stark/Batman....

9pm

oof/thump/thud

after i finish my 3d

One that doesn't require sleep, and the other that sleeps during the day...

@Joshua ahahhahhaaha

@aking1012 some OP forgets to do a vote also. they only say +1 in a comment

leme give him

@aking1012 you agree with the dupeness of this one ? askubuntu.com/q/192555/61218

7:13 PM
cant do anything with this
When I drag a window to the left (or right or up) side of the screen an orange frame shows up, indicating the area that the window will occupy. This frame is in orange.
theres 2 question there

@AnwarShah working my way through the review queue...give me a minute

no it's not a generic theming question. the window preview color and click/drag highlight color aren't affected properly by theme iirc

i can change the color
should i answer?

i think there was a better duplicate somewhere
i think the comment needs another uptick

7:21 PM
done

Which Git server software should I use on my Ubuntu Server?

It seems it's not a dupe. i was wrong with selected_bg_color
@Dude i think @aking1012 can help you

@aking1012 Hi, can you recommend a Git server software for a Linux beginner?

i was afk

I have looked at Gitolite but I don't know if that is good?

7:27 PM
as far as the server part...whatever is easiest for you to install...iirc it's gitosis is deprecated
short answer: use gitolite
0
A: What do I need to correct to get Gitosis to work?

ArrowmasterThis isn't really a proper answer to your question, but I recommend you switch to using gitolite instead of gitosis. Gitosis is deprecated and isn't being developed anymore, so if bugs are found they will likely never be fixed. Gitolite was created as a gitosis replacement with far better featur...

@aking1012 Ok, thank you:)

aking, am i correct in saying "there isn't any lens manager yet for Ubuntu"
"But some apps are really in their way to appear soon." Such as? — Uri Herrera 41 secs ago
@aking1012 i need your help now :P
what was the name of that app i saw this morning?

7:43 PM
lenstoggle was my app. it's in ppa and github. people really want it: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/06/lens-toggle-quickly-enable-disable.html

so design team appears to be listening: https://lists.launchpad.net/unity-design/msg09969.html
not that anyone dropped my name on the mailing list or anything :|
@AnwarShah --^

I'm going to name your apps in the answer, is it ok?

sure...
or you could link to the other question and vtc it...

A: How do I remove the video lens?

aking1012As it turns out, I turned the renaming lense folders into a small project that I made into a PPA. It's located here if you want to try it out. You have to log-out and log-in after you apply the changes. It works fine for me. Leaving the rest of the answer for historical purposes. Interesti...

do you think, it's a dupe?

idk. the answer is the same. it's just more general than "disable video lens". i tend to be a little harsh. i think if the answer is the same they should all point to one. people can read the question and follow the original answer if they want. just my opinion

thanks

np

Though N.N has different opinion ;)

lots of people don't share that particular opinion of mine. that's what's beautiful about opinions ;)

Q: Is it possible to install paid apps in a development release?

zubozroutI wonder if it is somehow possible to install paid applications in a development release of Ubuntu? I think most packages could be easily installed, though is there a way I can convince Ubuntu Software Center to think I am running the older version of Ubuntu so I can install those apps? Thank you.

kill it with fire...also it's a dupe of that humble indie bundle question @RolandTaylor answered yesterday

but ubuntu+1 question which can be useful are decided not to be closed afaik
though, it may be dupe

A: When will the Humble Indie Bundle 6 games be supported on Ubuntu 12.10?

Roland TaylorI know this questions is considered off-topic by most, but I'm going to answer because I got it to work for the previous humble bundle (Which was gifted to me). You just need to install the debs as usual, and it will work as if you were on 12.04 (at least it did for me).

closed and comment by a mod. some may be trying for infighting on 12.10 should be on topic sometimes. my opinion is no...never. because then it becomes a judgement call. black or white. no gray for AU although generally i am a fan of gray area

but that question can be a solid question. such as how can i download daily builds like
i mean, not dependent on any specific +1 version

+1 should be out of bounds. even if we have closed canonical questions, we can still direct users to closed questions. closed isn't bad it just means those questions are discouraged and the community at large shouldn't feel bad about not answering them

hmm

if we start accepting any +1 questions, the door is open and this will only get worse:

Our answer rate is unacceptable, keep up the review efforts, and answering those questions!
again, just my opinion

i'm thinking it fell into the first catagory
but that just a qn.

i saw. there are points on both sides. saying it's okay sometimes just makes it complicated. i told you my opinion. you're not going to convince me otherwise

ok.
I'm actually a bit confused

is convinced

community disagreement. both sides are full of true believers ;) see ffmpeg vs avconv

Most +1 question are on half baken features or even bugs that may change.
But some aren't.

Ok, thanks and sorry for not obeying the rules (I didn't notice it is not allowed to ask about development releases here). — zubozrout 28 secs ago
poor guy

We should take care not to close the gems amongst them.

Thanks

IIRC qestions on Launcher and Dash were not closed at a time when we were still in beta.
They were too important.

8:05 PM
he's not a poor guy...
i think if you use dev release you assume a certain personal responsibility to sort stuff out.

someone encourage him in comments if you want. it's fine to disagree with me. that's why we have 5 people required voting to close to actually close it
@Takkat that's fair i guess, but maybe those users should be directed to the mailing lists...just saying
i don't like being the support forum that fixes issues for a money making company (Canonical) while I peel and cut potatoes for a living
i'm going to stop now...afk for a while to cool my jets

<-- takes out secret (unremoval) weapon ;)

i see it, i'm just taking a break so i don't say something ignorant i'll regret @AnwarShah @Takkat

that i don't know
who uses fat32 any more?
don't answer that

I'll answer anyway Those of us who have to live in a mixed world. :(

My TV set expects a FAT32 drive for hard disk recording.
It does not like ext4

true. i was in a windows only environment at one point where some software required ntfs and broke if you installed on a fat32 partition (oddly discovered because one of the other fellows elected to format an XP install as fat32 :/)

This world is so alien to me.
First thing it showed me.
How should I know and choose - I am a noob in this world.

top tier in my opinion are in no particular order eset, bitdefender, fsecure, and kaspersky

Next thing it says: it blocked one of those sites for downloading Virus protection - for security reasons! :/
@aking1012 which one is free?

there's a disk scan free for bitdefender. eset has a 30 day trial
comodo is free for a near commercial grade solution

Bah - cutting my internet connection of the VM then.

why do all the really interesting shows get cancelled? endgame was really good/fun/interesting

Your taste may not be that of others?
I stopped watching TV (only 10 minutes before I fall asleep maybe)

8:52 PM
i'm not in to reality tv drama... thanks god jersey shore finally got cancelled

by significant other is - thats enough for one house
Oh - the kids watch strange stuff - sometimes not even bad ;P
I would have never seen "Despicable Me" without my kids forcing me into it ;)
I force them to use Ubuntu in return.

think i'm putting in an app at a local sheet-metal fabrication place. someone told me they were looking for people to work and give more hours+pay than what i'm doing now. but they said "non-union" like it's a bad thing...i used to live in an employed at will non-union state so...yeah, used to having to work for money ;)

here most people are "non-union" but still the unions have some vanishing powers.
They do things now they could not do 20 years ago.
Too sad.

jrg
Wait, my day is made.
Is Jersey Shore really cancelled?!

jrg
9:03 PM
sweet

@Takkat the only place unions have any power is for teachers in chicago evidently

lol

/me thinks they should just fire all the complainers and hire a new round of teachers...it's not like we have a low unemployment rate among people with degrees...just saying

I don't want to be a teacher in Chicago
lol - the virus scanner spits out a !!WARNING!! - it says it's own .exe is password protected.

which one?
@Takkat 70k/yr in a city where the average income is about 40? sure. do that job

9:05 PM
Its a free one: Avira - not the best but does online scanning.
I don't want to be a teacher anywhere. They complain about too much work (they have like 12 weeks of holidays here).

9:21 PM
