jack offAll of this nonsensical shit, just, just , just to get a fucking OS to work fucking really? No fucking wonder the rest of the world uses Microsoft OS's most people don't have ass fucking loads of time to fucking waste over fucking nonsensical bullfuckingshit.

flagged this, but this should be deleted as well

check my edit

I did, but then it wouldn't be an answer either.

exactly. i flagged it as well. it just doesn't need to be sitting there in all it's anti-glory while we wait

i see.

@aking1012 oh man, you edited it. no more fun.

anyone know if there's a way to set relative depth for "always on bottom" windows?

i wouldn't know.

good morning

@karthick87 did you ever get up with jrg about your nagios issue or figure it out?

4.6 gig would be the biggest others around 4.3 — robert 6 hours ago
It doesn't make sense.

@aking1012 i have not seen him in chat to to get a clear picture abt the error.. Moreover i am facing this error only on adding ubuntuservers for monitoring. There is no problem with other distributions.

@HoneyBadger they might have a list of checksums for known pirated movies...kind of like some other file hosting places have sum checks so you they only store each blob of data once no matter how many people upload it. then if it gets reported, they only have to ban one blob

@aking1012 I think he is uploading 4 movies with each of them 4 GBs.

yes...but if they're not showing as uploaded after completion it could just be that he uploads, it flags, and isn't available. doesn't matter how many he successfully uploads or how many times. it's not in his store actually, so it doesn't count
most reasonable explanation from my perspective

5:09 AM
Yeah, fair point.

Is there any way to be able to share a folder without installing guest additions?

Q: How to configure Backuppc in ubuntu 12.04?

karthick87I would like to setup Backuppc to Backup files of all remote hosts. A need guide with screenshots will be appreciated. Details: All the hosts are running ubuntu, i need to set incremental backup for the files which is kept in their desktop. Need to monitor backup status from server using web G...

@Anwar yes. nitroshare and bridged networking or a thin file upload simplehttp server in python...

@aking1012 thanks. I want to learn more about the last option

@aking1012 simple http server in python? How ?

5:17 AM
i wouldn't use that code exactly since it lets you do lots of things you shouldn't...like browse folders...but still, something like that
it's not exactly "shared" either. just a way to send files to the guest

Thanks

np

i'm trying it

Nice guide :D

hello everyone...good morning

5:22 AM
if you wanted to make something that actually did a shared folder like thing, you would need to run scripts on both sides and use inotify/FindFirstChangeNotification to keep them in sync

hello @ErangaFernando

Hi there...

@aking1012 I'm running it on my host. is it sufficient?

@Prasad hiiiiiiiiiiii

@Anwar you'ld be running it on the guest to get files in, or host to get files out

5:24 AM
Thanks. i can browse the host folder !!
very nice and a quick one!

Because it gets its job done what else do you need from a notification bubble?. — Uri Herrera 20 secs ago
good show sir...good show

@aking1012 do you think, my downvote was a bad one
(i was actually getting bored that time)
not my usual habit

not really. i generally don't vtc AND downvote unless it's a REALLY bad question, but i don't think it was a "bad" downvote

:)
it's not my usual doing..

so i'm thinking about switching to server/openbox for my laptop. does anyone have any feedback on how openbox compositing looks as compared to cairo-xcomp?

5:30 AM
@sandroid OK. there is no downvote! — Anwar 9 secs ago
does openbox have composition?
I don't think so.
I think, it's a bare minimum

openbox has a tiny bit of built-in compositing according to the mailing-list/arch forums
no plug-ins though
on your thing with @sandroid - two of the four questions are feature-requests/complaints. i wouldn't feel bad about the downvote (see the horizontal scroll question)

openbox is installed with lubuntu here. didn't tried yet though. may be there is a change in recent versions.

yeah, i'm looking at REALLY thinning out the laptop.

Actually I had seen two ubuntu+1 question is succession. that was the cause of the downvote

Who downvoted what?
Only I can do that. :*

5:35 AM
I think, i also REALLY need this thinning. (only 1GB RAM can't give me any room for experiments)

@HoneyBadger downvotes the comment ;)

haha

> Further edit below for the daft commentary and the obvious support for it... hopefully it'll get a few (constructive) answers and less comments.
I wanted vote it to close for being non-constructive. :P

What about a "it is by design dummy" answer?

You just come across as ranting. If the option isn't already there, it just means it is by design or the developers don't have the time to make it configurable yet. — jokerdino 1 min ago
well jokerdino answered that in a comment.

5:41 AM
well, he does it all the time. Putting answers in comments.

nice @jokerdino
ha ha

shrug
so anyway, his question is, how to show notify-osd in both monitors or where the mouse cursor is in.
someone edit it.

initially he asked about quantal...then edited that bit out when he got close-votes. i'm not touching it

fair point

A little ranting about mods in chat.MSO helps.

A: Can we merge distro, distribution, distributions and linux-distro tags?

Shog9These tags have been destroyed. Please care for the widows and orphans.

Please quickly list the thread that needs retagging. I will get the SE team to do it for us :))
I mean, put them here and I will make a meta thread.
Hello?
Anyone?

erm, i avoid metaso

@aking1012 I am posting in metaAU
I just talked to them in chatmetaso

Q: Retag requests that need to be taken care of

jokerdinoSome of the retag requests have been left in limbo for quite a while and if someone could take care of it, it would be nice. Listing the threads for reference: Synonimization of singular/plural tag pairs Can we make some low quality tags synonyms, and outright remove some others? Tag synonym re...

6:48 AM
No one ever says anything. Bravo!

Hi

How can I say anything when still in bed...

You need a bed coffee.

<-- needs wake-up-poison

6:51 AM
lol

Tagging is important but retagging is a PITA

Unless you got mod powers.

Once all is done people start using freshly deleted tags again

so, increase the rep needed to create new tags.
that reduces the chance of people creating clutter.
It currently is 300 rep. Should be increased to 1500 rep like in SO.

good thought at least we do have enough users having that much rep.

6:56 AM
higher rep required means lesser people can create them. better chance of regulating new tags.

Still, even >1500 rep users will create unwanted tags

True D:

Nothing stops the tag vandals

and more people start using those tags.
I can't imagine it.

Yeah, like ;)

6:58 AM
whoo, it doesn't exist yet

It did some time ago... :/

it got killed.

with fire

haha

Someone should create a list of unwanted tags and a red message popping up "Dont create me"
This list would be endless.

7:00 AM
no, i am not gonna do that. :P

Like a tag whitelist would be endless too

blacklist is easier than whitelist.

We may have to live with bad tags that do the most harm to people using it

at least there is a limit of tags you can use.

7:03 AM
five is too little IMO
needs at least 15

Imagine a question tagged with: installation, ubuntu, crash, freeze, sound, graphics, usb, networking, wifi, wireless, nvidia, ati, intel,...

oh god no

Jorge would burst

Oh I forgot about the dreadful

7:05 AM
we have a freeze, lag, error among others

yeah these tags are not really useful but then they make it easier to spot the q to close

funny you say that

In fact we should create those tags only for that purpose
In the hope people use it.

i think we should rename them to

lol
like synonym all of them to the secret

7:09 AM
lol
all mint, debian and BT should be ubunot

yeah these and then we need in addition

or [tag:don't-bother-reading-this-question]

This is not needed - its enough you create 2 pages of unformatted terminal output

hah
all those people know some dude with time to kill will improve it for them.

Here on the netbook thant makes 4 pages and no scroll wheel
<-- hates touchpads

7:14 AM
i got used to it

My thumb is almost as big as the tp here

Mine isn't that big. yay

My hands are not made for touch devices. I have trouble with them all around.
Good we have a daskeyboard on the desktop

I would like to try that keyboard.

It nice - very precise and not really that loud.
Well I can hear someone typing in the other room here

7:19 AM
ah, since @JourneymanGeek is part of the keyboard mafia, he can provide us with some input on this.
@Takkat wait, is it like some typewriter ?

omg, he is back.

you DID @ me ;p

it feels like typing on a typewriter but its not that loud - not at all

@Takkat: that mechanicals are invariably loud is a bit of a myth

7:20 AM
it is - I was disappointed in the first place ;)

Unless you had a model M ;p

I wish I had

My BW (with cherry blues) is about as loud as my logitech
and quieter than a cheap chinese keyboard
lol

yeah cheap keaboards can be louder: squeeking when pressing any key

I'd likely getting one as a home keyboard when I get a job

7:22 AM
get a job then!

(and a cherry brown based keyboard for work)
LOL
cough
Working on that ;)

lol

also, apparently for some reason the last time I tried to order one, they cancelled my order ;p

thats not nice of them.

no idea why
Don't care, getting one, somehow
even I have to bribe my friend in boston (who's a sweetheart and helps me get stuff), to lug it home

7:26 AM
there is a cheaper version made by Cherry with the same keys but their case is sort of made cheaply

er
cherry dosen't do BS springs
no one does
unicomp makes the model M as the customiser

oh - I was referring to the Cherry keys that are not only in other brands but also in keyboards made by Cherry themselves

Cheap Cherry boards however may not last long in case you type a lot.

I'd probably go with either a BW stealth or some other gaming keyboards
I LOVE my BW other than the ultraglossy finish
the new one is dumping that
(black widow - razer's mechanical)

7:29 AM
Glossy == dusty

fingerprint magnet too

That's ok - so you always knwo who used it recently
And who it was that bricked your OS

not me!

Like all those questions starting with "Suddenly..."

I've been too conservative with my gear my lately

7:32 AM
I upgraded the netbook to 12.04 yesterday.
no issues

lol. Need to rebuilt my server. Swapped most of what I was actually using it for to a VM
(at the moment, testing my duct tape and bailing wire notification system

Having a powerful server running various VMs is cool

good morning

if i want to modify what is considered as a default setting, what do i edit?

Hi @htorque

7:35 AM
@htorque hey

@HoneyBadger why would you change defaults? That sounds asking for trouble

@Takkat i keep resetting defaults every once in a while. So, i want to manipulate the defaults.
or i can write a script that resets and does the added modifications.

@Takkat: powerful?
Its a c2d i built in 2007 ;p

@JourneymanGeek thats about the same age my desktop has. It still is fine, only that 12.10 is so slow in the VM..

lol
I'm running xubuntu on it

7:39 AM
@HoneyBadger depending on your app you could keep a custom user setup as a backup to copy back,

@Takkat this is regarding unity launchers and gnome launcher

@HoneyBadger: the latter sounds like a more sensible idea

@JourneymanGeek yeah. time to learn bash scripting. :|

lol
Its easy!
| <- ceci un pipe!

7:41 AM
Thats the SINGLE most useful thing

ok, time to concentrate now :P

can I call notify-send from a bash script? It fails with me...

@Takkat sure.
you need to use the binary or something instead of the command

ah binary or something sounds easy going,,, ;P
why does the command not work? It should!

DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/notify-send "TITLE" "MESSAGE"
use this one --^

7:46 AM
I see. I missed the .0 in the DISPLAY def

Thank me later

Thank you later.

Later is now - THANK YOU

I ran into it earlier. Figured it from a mailing list.
was going through my bash history to know what I did.

7:48 AM
XD

@HoneyBadger it doesn't like bangs btw

thats odd

don't know.

it didn't work the first time, but did later

oh and it doesn't honor timeout if you set an error to critical...i was expecting flashy red or something, but honoring the timeout...

7:51 AM
so, where are the launcher favourites stored?
ah found it
com.canonical.Unity.Launcher
i don't think it works that way o.O

they hide stuff from the users ;)

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites

anyway, found a way to remove the workspace switcher icon >:)
@penreturn format for adding new things?

gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites "$(gsettings get com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites | sed "s/, *'yourapp' *//g" | sed "s/'yourapp' *, *//g" | sed -e "s/]$/, 'yourapp']/")"

evil.

7:59 AM
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcher favorites "['penreturns.desktop']"

bah
doesn;t work.

hello everyone :D

no thanks

Need to backup gnome 3 extensions....how to backup it?

8:03 AM
copy the .local/share/gnome-shell/extensions
loves it when the answer is the first hit on Google.

Usage:
gsettings [--schemadir SCHEMADIR] set SCHEMA[:PATH] KEY VALUE

Set the value of KEY to VALUE

Arguments:
SCHEMADIR A directory to search for additional schemas
SCHEMA The name of the schema
PATH The path, for relocatable schemas
KEY The key within the schema
VALUE The value to set
@HoneyBadger ahahhahaa

@penreturn i am on 12.10. your answer is incompatible.
thanks for your work. will figure it out myself.

@HoneyBadger Thanks a LOT...

<--- end user here... works only with stable release T..T

@penreturn :)

8:07 AM
Nobody seems to dare touching this one: askubuntu.com/questions/191897/…

@Takkat i asked on community room IRC
will get an answer when some one wakes up. no worries.

good to know.

OK...i did copy them..but how to use them now? (sorry)

copy it back where it should be.

@HoneyBadger Done.

8:10 AM

did that more than twice

what exactly did you do?

@HoneyBadger have you logout after doing that? hahhhahhaha all my favorite item gone... \o/

@penreturn i did a unity --replace

hahaahhaha

8:12 AM
Why you laughing like a maniac? :S

I did copy them to the same location...and also reloaded the gnome shell...but I can't see any extension running ..do I need to use Gnome settings tool?

not necessarily.
i would do your job but i am trying to figure out my own problem here.

@HoneyBadger lol..what is your problem? :D

unmounted mounts show up in launcher
what?

@HoneyBadger I also have that matter
but not every time....rarely....
all the parttions in the launcher?

8:16 AM
this is modified unity configurations. making me go grr

Need to go...some tweaks ahead...slow browsing when downloading :) bye all

thanks
tweaking too much is a bad idea these days.
i keep purging my configurations. so i stay as close as possible towards the defaults

@Prasad share me your desktop after finish tweaking \o/

<-- stopped tweaking after purging Windows

8:29 AM
:D

Defaults make sense 99 % of time
99,9 % to be precise

i dont know... get boring with my default desktop...

@penreturn looks like your desktop is too solid.
use devel release and spend time making it usable.

no lah! just wallpaper, awn n 1 conky hahahaha

8:33 AM

Looks nice.
