Q: I'm having problems with Ubuntu

denYesterday I tried to install Ubuntu. I burned Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop on a CD, and it was really slow when I tried to boot from the CD. So, I tried to install it from a USB-flash. I used Universal USB Installer and set it to my E:/ hard disk. Now, I can't load any system. Windows can't load I don'...

I dont know. Anwar answers one every week.

jk

I think, he accidentally deleted the E: drive in the internal disk
lol

i found one to dupe it to
btw, a recent update nuked my screensaver settings. grr

9:10 AM
follow my method: "don't update" ;P

follow my method: don't bother customizing
stick to defaults
remove settings every day
or use unity

or another one: "remove your .folders in home every week"

you can't customize much anyway

power management - never modify behavior, screensaver - always off, starts hulu...laptop goes to suspend and fails to resume

@aking1012 that was a bug in 12.04

9:12 AM
headdesk
it was working for me until last night

someone sent me an email from ask ubuntu regarding power management today.

let's patch in some regression...

I liked these screenshot tooo much.. nicee askubuntu.com/a/154554/61218

@AnwarShah that looks like wallpaper

@AnwarShah i'll switch to server with openbox first. i saw a nice theme i like on boxlook

9:13 AM
i am gonna switch to LFS

@jokerdino i am talking about the shadows.

@AnwarShah oh i read it as screensaver instead of screenshot.

@jokerdino this is the same guy that was going to switch to fedora for deb-delta's right???

@aking1012 ehehe
fedora's fonts look ugly

@jokerdino you should install a package
wait i remember the name
freeworld-freetype or something
As you may already know, all of my plan is planned for planning

9:16 AM
hm
your plan is planned for planning.

let's have a meeting where we'll discuss a timeline for putting together a plan... joke

haha

nice idea

meanwhile in the dark reaches of somewhere, a lone developer solves the problem...
time to go cut up a bunch of vegetables...bbl

@aking1012 cya

Q: Local ftp access

beacon_bonanzaI had a strange situation where I was setting up a small network all with fixed IPs. I had a NAS drive that I had enabled ftp on. I was using ubuntu 10.10, when I used the 'connect to server' menu I was able to connect fine (or just entering in the URL in nautilus). However from the command line ...

hello...everyone :)
O.O....new gravatar....cool

Hi guys

11:04 AM
hiya

Hi @RobinHood

12.04 suck

@RobinHood For what reasons?

I'm fed up,
keep hanging and hanging, I have to restart my system five times in a day
is there any plug-in is missing or some others issue I'm facing?
can someone suggest me which version is recommended one?
sleep time? :P
@smartboyhw copy cat :D
ooh.. your one is in zoomview :P

@RobinHood ;D use 12.10 then

11:12 AM
are you using? & performance?

@RobinHood 1. Yes and 2. Great!

can I upgrade directly?
without uninstalling and installing/

@RobinHood Yes:)

hummm..thanks..lemme search the steps.
It will erase any kind of data while upgrading?

@RobinHood don't
don't upgrade to 12.10 listening to a wannabe

11:23 AM
hahahahaha

it is still in development.
if you can't even use 12.04 without frustration, 12.10 will drive you to windows
2

1 . Backup everything
2. Prepare to fakap ( lost everything)
3. Remain 12.04 which is LTS version

Hi @jokerdino

@smartboyhw please don't give unsuspecting users malicious advice.

@jokerdino /me does not think it is malicious....

11:27 AM
@smartboyhw i don't concur with you
i run development release and i know how unstable it is compared to precise

O C'mon thanks, but then what problem messing with my system?

common thanks?
i wouldn't know what problem you are facing.

@RobinHood graphic?

keep hanging and hanging, I have to restart my system five times in a day

there are million questions about "ubuntu keeps hanging"
and none of them would get a good answer because they can't give relevant technical details

11:29 AM
hahhaha spec it self

it can be graphics, it can be lack of ram, lack of disk space, poor hard drive performance, bad hardware drivers, etc

+1

see if unity-2d makes your experience better.
or switch to a lighter DE like LXDM.

but normally it occur while I'm using browser(chrome or fire fox) and sometime its due to eclipse.

ram? run top and see the output

11:32 AM
they are both resource intensive programs. sounds like you could use more ram

2GB

there you go.
32 bit?

yup

so you have limited resources.

what kernel are using right now? im using 3.2 and it use almost 50% with ff chrome, xchat, skype, firewall, virtualbox on 8g ram... but when im using kernel 3.4 i feel like its more stable... ram around 32%

11:34 AM
i run a 64 bit, 4 GB ram and unity can be sluggish. you have half of what i got.

so all blame goes to ram?

unity is itself resource intensive. so, with 2GB ram, it is pretty tricky
try lighter DE, that's all i can tell.

--^ yeah - that.
o/ all

o/

DE?

11:37 AM
\o/

desktop environment.

Q: Was there a debate about my post? If so, can I see it?

Peter JankuliakThis question is about posts on askubuntu in general, but I'll use my post as an example: How do I backup the pre-installed Windows before installing Ubuntu? Only recently I've found out that the post has been closed for being off-topic and then later reopened. http://askubuntu.com/posts/16693...

I just run this command sudo apt-get install lxdm and its installing packages. @jokerdino
on track?

you run sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop for a better experience
on a terminal

Q: resolution of attached widescreen

user857990I wanted to connect my TV (Sony Bravia) to my Laptop. My laptop has a displayport and the TV a HDMI. So with the adapters, I'm able to connect those two, and that part works. What doesn't work, is both screen are widescreen, but it does configure both of them automatically (Kubuntu 12.04) as 10...

Can you answer this? How do I change the order in which lenses appear in the dash? http://askubuntu.com/q/192327?atw=1 #unity

Q: How do I install LXDE / Lubuntu?

RahulI want to install lubuntu on my current (pre-existing) Ubuntu Install because of it's light-weight footprint. Can I preserve currently installed apps after installation?

I am guessing he installed lxdm and logged into Unity and expects system to not hang.

Qin ZhengI am using Ubuntu12.04 with gnome3.4. I installed conky to display my system information. And everything is good except that conky can't autostart when the system starts. I have configure gnome-session-properties with /usr/share/conkycolors/bin/conkyStart but it doesn't work. So how can I have my...
