Q: How to make duplicates with different names?

Pranit BauvaI want to duplicate the contents of a file. Suppose there is a file named "Hydrogen.element". I want to duplicate the contents of this file with a different name ie.make another file named "Helium.element". I am actually making a periodic table and I want to use the file named "Hydrogen.element" ...

09:21
@jokerdino ping!
@njallam \o
hello all
I'm sure U&L has lower stats than some Area51 betas.
Actualy
U&L was pretty solid when it went public.
No, scratch that.
09:33
Can you answer this? How do I install the Intel Graphics driver in my system? http://askubuntu.com/q/166224?atw=1 #drivers
@TheInterrupter nope. Sorry.
Hey, there's a new thing called GNOMEbuntu coming in October. YEAH! @Anwar \o
yeah, the news like a week old
@smartboyhw nice! I was looking for it.
Is it canonical release?
@Anwar community release
official flavour
09:44
Oh.. great!
One of my answer is accepted today, which i gave in june 14
I was waiting.. for it
Yep, I am trying to contact the dev team to see if I can help:)
@Ilay try accepting an answer if you get helped by any. This will benefit the future visitors — Anwar Jul 19 at 18:23
may be for this^
Anwar: Why is the last one removed? I can't even see it
This answer has a serious syntax problem and thus won't work. can you say which?

A: How to change the purple background color in grub?

FireHeronThis is my way: sudo gedit /lib/plymouth/themes/default.grub And change grub background color as you want, in my case I change grub background to black (0,0,0) if background_color 0,0,0; then clear fi Then, update grub sudo update-grub Regards

@smartboyhw wrong link
09:49
@Anwar Ah ha
@Anwar quotes?
no. it is a syntax problem in code, which will leave you with black even you give other color value
I learned it by doing the same mistake
is it ====
@Anwar Edit it then
@smartboyhw Or he could post his own answer.
09:51
there should be a space after the color value
@Anwar oh yeah.
@njallam I tempted to do so, but the answer is so similar.
@Anwar Oh OK
I thought it was like an incorrect script.
Anyway i am now using this color
i got an upvote on Unix. yay!
09:53
if background_color 35,00,60 ; then
  clear
fi
@njallam I suggest editing it
I've edited it already
@smartboyhw That's probably the better way to handle it.
@njallam Yes it is
@Anwar how good are you in bash?

@njallam you didn't upvote my answer? cool
I never upvote
I probably should
@njallam Please do
@smartboyhw Should I go on an upvote spree now?
@njallam spree?
What's spree????
09:56
@smartboyhw dude, stop flagging it
@jokerdino Flagging what?
@Anwar remove it before more mods come to the room.
I'm so confused.
@jokerdino I discover solution when i need one. otherwise not very good
09:57
smartboy flagged Anwar's chat comment.
@jokerdino Removed anyway
@smartboyhw i was kidding.
You can get banned for abusive flagging.
@Anwar ...
I don't like kidding with banning since I've been done on this before.
those small kind of things can be resolved without flagging, imo
09:58
On #ubuntuforums I almost got banned by the ops because they wanna try their ban skills, I have to go to #freenode to complain:(
@smartboyhw well, if you are going to act this silly again and again, you will be.
@jokerdino i knew your answer though
@Anwar what answer?

A: How to make duplicates with different names from a single file?

jokerdinoWhy not use cp command? for ELEMENT in {1..10}.element; do cp Hydrogen.element element$ELEMENT; done This command would create 10 files of the name element1.element, element2.element, etc. You can then just rename the files with the relevant element name. If you need to generate more element f...

@Anwar Oh. No Unix for me please:)
10:04
I am just gonna ignore a certain someone now.
@jokerdino ?
@Anwar Anwar, I updated the answer.
@Anwar Well clearly it's not
Heard of DNFTT?
@jokerdino Heard of a bit. Why?
10:07
@jokerdino who are you calling a troll?
Nice try
brilliant try
@njallam I want to ask that question too
Am I being trolled?
10:10
I am absolutely perplexed of whom @jokerdino is talking about
@smartboyhw I think he is the troll trolling us.
@njallam Good job mate
I am not gonna tell who but I think the person knows who is the troll.
@jokerdino you?
I won't ping anyone so as to not give it away.
10:11
@jokerdino I'm puzzled now...
@smartboyhw Me too
He said he was going to ignore the troll
@Anwar is ruled out because he pinged him
@njallam Yeah, but who's the troll?
I hate whodunnits
@njallam YEAH! ME TOO!
@njallam @smartboyhw @jokerdino
10:14
heh, that's a nice word.
@njallam I think he meant either you or me is a troll...
@smartboyhw hmm
\o @OswaldoNuñez
@smartboyhw ditto
@njallam Yeah, so I think @jokerdino hates us. Lets get out of here, before he wants to ban us:(
10:15
lol troll bait
@smartboyhw Meet me in the python room of SO
@njallam What is SO?
@njallam: Just create a chatroom here
@smartboyhw What should I call it?
10:17
Secret room of njallam and smartboyhw LOL
njallam: I don't have the rep to talk in Python

@njallam Good
I think, he haven't ignored any one of us yet
@jokerdino updated what answer?
ಠ_ಠ
UL answer
10:20
sorry, i see the same answer. it was edited 42min ago
yeah, your comment came in after my update
his comment came in before the update
just installed all the screenlets only to find out that I can not make them un-clickable
oh. make sense. sorry. I thought you updated after my comment
anyone have experience with plasma widgets?
@JoshuaRobison what do you mean by unclickable?
10:22
and anyone know if Ican make them unclickable?
move them?
I am using KDE now so have some experience
@JoshuaRobison unclickable means?
@jokerdino, I mean, when I click on a window underneath the widget, the window underneath the widget is affected
and the widget remains unaffected
so for example I have a clock widget
hovering above every window
oh
makes sense
you cant interact with the screenlet
and then some kind of popup window pops up and asks me to click "ok" button but the OK button is underneath the widget for some reason
so I go and click it but the widget gets in the way
I want the widget to be completely unnaffected by the mouse
as if the widget was not even there
10:24
i hate screenlets
screenlets get in the way
have you tried locking widgets?
my mouse clicks can not affect what lies behind them
@Anwar, yes ... locking them is great for locking in their position but does nothing to make them transparent to the mouse
When i lock widgets, there is no pop-up, only the time when i hover over clock
(if i understand you correctly)
@Anwar, but if there is an "ok" button behind the widget you will not be able to click on the OK button
the widget will get in the way
I want to be able to click on things that are underneath the widget
I want to be able to right click on a widget and my computer think I'm right clicking on the desktop because it can not even see the widget is there
10:29
@JoshuaRobison Thanks, understand now
but I guess I would need to check a kde forum or something to check on plasma widgets
what;s with kde?
Hey @jokerdino
nice try @njallam
10:32
good try
@Anwar :P
@Anwar Excellent try
Anyone who is NOT jokerdino please go to chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/4710/the-bunker
that would make a good ignore list.

10:34
@jokerdino TYPO!
@smartboyhw successful try
It needed to be done^
@Anwar Yes it is
@jokerdino What happened!
10:38
whodunnits
@njallam ?
@smartboyhw trying to get him to ping me.
@njallam OK
read the Gubuntu news. So, questions about that distro will be off-topic until it become officially recognized?
gnobuntu
10:44
@JoshuaRobison sorry, it seems we don't have the answer. thanks
yeah. I was talking about that Gnomebuntu
Hey! @jokerdino. What's my twitter username?
O_O
@Anwar :)))
I still stand by my opinion that @jokerdino is the troll.
nice try
10:47
But you're trolling us!
I could be working now!
@njallam it is clear, if he ignores you, he won't see your messages.
@Anwar huh

you're going to all of that effort for a silly game.

11:07
should edits on answers be approved?
@msPeachy yes
Yes, when the editor don't have 2k rep or more
shouldn't they just post a new answer? this editor has added an alternative solution to an existing answer
@msPeachy Then yes, make a new answer
In that case, yes. but he may be too generous
11:10
If it is a slight change, like a minor script error, edit it.
I would always do a new answer though ;)
he/she is a new user with just 1 rep. It is not a minor change, he/she added an answer to the existing answer.
@msPeachy sorry, we can't do much about that.
you may try to say him, he may instead a new answer or should, if the edit is too much
Rollback and tell the editor to make a new answer,
Do you have the link? @msPeachy
11:12
so should we approve it? or advise him to post a new answer (although I'm not sure if this is possible)?
he didn't touch the original answer, instead he added an alternative answer
OK we don't have any reason to deny the edit also, i'd approve it
@jokerdino read from this
6 mins ago, by msPeachy
should edits on answers be approved?
@msPeachy wait. we have a guru here
11:15
@jokerdino hi
have you checked the link? I'll skip it, you decide
i bet it was suggested so many hours ago
people usually add an answer as an edit when the question is protected
5 hours ago, it may have been approved or rejected by now by a mod or another user
oh yes, I see it is protected
right. it happens time and again :)
11:18
3 mins ago, by Anwar
@msPeachy wait. we have a guru here
o.O
where's the guru?
Oh. the case was, it is protected.
@jokerdino so should the edit be approved or rejected?
@jokerdino he meant YOU!
i would just reject it o.O
hold on
I approved it
11:20
why?
okay, your call
can't hold on, need to take a shower and go to church...you guys decide.
be back later
Really confused now :S
TypeError: register_deserialize_tagset() takes exactly 2 arguments (1 given)
same with register serialize... it takes a utf8 string as an argument. that is a pygtk example not a pygi example
Oh, OK
What I have done is put the register_deserialize_tagset() and register_serialize_tagset() where the TextBuffer is created
and c_format = self.text_buffer.get_serialize_formats()[0]
Is that correct?
11:29
er...it should still error out with takes exactly 2 arguments (1 given)
So now textbuffer.register_deserialize_tagset(c_buffer.get_text().encode('utf-8')) && textbuffer.register_serialize_tagset(c_buffer.get_text().encode('utf-8'))
if the serialize version worked. i would think the deserialize version would be much the same
TypeError: get_text() takes exactly 4 arguments (1 given)
Wait I can solve that
.get_bounds()
...
textbuffer.register_deserialize_tagset(textbuffer.get_text(textbuffer.get_start_‌iter(), textbuffer.get_end_iter()).encode('utf-8'))
TypeError: get_text() takes exactly 4 arguments (3 given)
def get_text(start, end, include_hidden_chars=True) <-- according to PyGtk
I'm not sure about GObject though
I'm looking though /gi/types.py now
How do I view those methods again?
Like in Terminal
:S

Please go through the formatting help. The community can't afford to keep fixing your formatting. — jokerdino 1 hour ago
@mateo_salta You'd posted a CW answer in this question which quoted from the OP's explanation (from a comment that was probably removed after the CW answer was posted) of how s/he solved the problem. But it appears you've recently deleted that CW answer. Did it not correctly indicate how the OP said s/he solved the problem?
I'm asking because, if we do know how it was solved, that should be an answer (with two upvotes and/or an accept so the question doesn't appear unanswered). But if we don't, then the question should be closed as too localized. Please let me know (either by chat reply, or by commenting on the question where this is being discussed ...or if it's really complicated, in meta). Thanks.
I answered a question, which seems to be a duplicate later. should i delete the answer? (i have an upvote there)

hi?
@jokerdino hello
@Anwar If the answer is valuable, you can ask a mod to merge the answers to the closed question into the master question.
In my opinion, there are some circumstances where it may make sense to keep the answer but not request merging.
the question isn't closed

Q: Find what program/process is writing to disk and what file it is writing to

DfrI left my desktop untouched for period of time. The HDD led still flashes every second and makes a tick sound. Is there any way to find out which process is doing it and which file it writes to?

@Anwar no kidding. i fixed a number of his answers and he still keeps making the same things again
hmm.. it make sense. also he has 400+ rep now
11:52
@EliahKagan BTW, that question has another answer with one upvote.
@Anwar exactly
Now i have 2 upvotes on that answer. (i don't want to lose rep ;P)
:P
how old is the answer?
from gi.repository import Gtk

win = Gtk.Window()
box = Gtk.Box()
win.add(box)

text = Gtk.TextView()
box.add(text)

buffer = text.get_buffer()

buffer.set_text("Sample text")

this = buffer.get_text(buffer.get_start_iter(), buffer.get_end_iter(), False)

format = buffer.register_serialize_tagset(this)

data = buffer.serialize(buffer, format, buffer.get_start_iter(), buffer.get_end_iter())

print data

Gtk.main()
@njallam --^
Thanks
@jokerdino mine? it is today
11:55
@jokerdino Yes...but I'm not sure that answer will actually work, and even if it could, we don't know if that helped the OP any. Depending on what we hear about why the CW answer was deleted, it might be OK to close the question as too localized even with the other answer. (Questions are closed as too localized somewhat frequently, even with answers that have been upvoted.)
@Anwar merge!
@EliahKagan That's for me.
@Anwar A small amount of rep (and +20 should be considered small, given that your total rep is far higher) is not, in my opinion, something to fret over. But I wouldn't delete your answer yet. The older question has a similar but not identical answer. Assuming the question you've answered is closed as a duplicate, I do think it would make sense for your answer to be merged to the master.
@jokerdino Yes, sorry, leading whitespace. Fixed.
No worries. I know it was for me.
@EliahKagan thanks.
@aking1012 Why is it buffer.serialise(buffer... ?
