My goodness!
It works!
Thanks @aking1012
@Anwar I flagged as Very Low Quality.
Only trouble is my loops are all screwed up...
I hate debugging.
@aking1012 I meant my save script works... somewhat.
My eyes are sore... — njallam 20 secs ago
@Anwar Yeah, I think it's fine to close it as not a real question. Of course, it's a very new question...it would also be OK to wait. I voted to close. If we close it and then the OP edits the question so it's clear what the OP is trying to do, I'll vote to reopen.
@jokerdino Looks like it.
Thanks.
still not pinging huh...
No. >:)
When are "you can do this different thing instead" answers considered good? http://meta.askubuntu.com/q/3989?atw=1
12:12
Why can't PyGObject just be documented properly!
@aking1012 if you feel like some more Python, paste.ubuntu.com/1181323 <-- that method is driving me insane. See if you can spot some errors in it.
self.subjects is a Gtk.Notebook()
Each page in subjects contains another notebook.
Each page of that contains a Text View
@EliahKagan It was one of those short answers in the comment, that didn't really explain it, since I'm not going to maintain the answer, and it seems community wiki answers really seem to discourage others to improve(rep wise) I'm not going to transfer answers from comments that way anymore.
@jokerdino looks like, You are following him in Au
@Anwar :P
i actually edited two of the nice solutions.
but i kept finding newer ones

@Ketan_Patel great answer dude. — AthloX Aug 4 at 6:14
nothing to say
@mateo_salta You may want to post on meta about this. Posting CW answers with information from comments, to make clear how the OP solved the problem and close the question, is very common. I'm not saying you were wrong to delete it, but I do think this general topic deserves consideration and discussion.
@EliahKagan so the answer was basically to use help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
12:25
@EliahKagan I understand his POV. I stopped CW-ing answers that I didn't understand.
If someone questions its validity, I wouldn't be able to rectify it.
I can give you the full text if you want to maintain the answer.
So, I figured no answer is better than "probably might work answer"
@mateo_salta 10K+ can see the answer. :)
@mateo_salta Well, we're both 10k users, I can see the deleted answer. :-)
(I mean jokerdino and I.)
waves
@mateo_salta I'll consider reposting it myself as CW. I don't think your choice to delete it is in any way unreasonable. Let me think about the matter. (I didn't want to repost it before talking to you, though, since I wasn't sure why you'd deleted it ...plus, I don't have the original comment for reference.)
12:28
Why am I dominating the star zone?
anyway, I think, it is too noisy to see the deleted (red backed) answers ;)
@Anwar Yes.
I starred several of your msg, supporting it. brb
there were others, that I tried posting that they say solved... and they got put through the washer on "this is not an answer" and such, maybe its a bit different, but if the poster say they solved Its hard to tell where to go from there

There you go!
12:39
how goes the weekend @foss?
btw, i dropped a comment on that question.
@fossfreedom I'd dupe it to this.
@jokerdino quiet apart from an almost electrical failure with the car - struggled to get home!
@EliahKagan good dupe - thanks and closed.
@fossfreedom wow, fixed the car yet?
@EliahKagan Yay, fixed the numbering.
@fossfreedom It was inspired by jokerdino's comment (which was perhaps even intended as a reference to that question).
so, this is the best case for the CW comment to answer that I had, askubuntu.com/a/142087/47291 and this was the worst, askubuntu.com/a/174280/47291 so...
12:43
But, if he was asking to remove ubuntu and only install windows, then it would be an off-topic. anyway closed
@EliahKagan I was asking for clarification. If he had said yes, I would have linked to that question. :)
@jokerdino put in a new battery ... if it runs out of juice ... probably the alternator. You wouldnt believe how scary - middle of the night - middle of no-where with the lights and dashboard blinking and throwing warning lights and the car almost dying!
@fossfreedom it ... is... scary. --Shatner
@Anwar I'm not sure I fully understand what situation you're saying would be off-topic ...but I don't think it's obvious that a question about how to stop using Ubuntu is off-topic for Ask Ubuntu or any other Ubuntu site.
@mateo_salta You were doing the community a favour. Don't feel discouraged because of these incidents. :|
12:46
@EliahKagan ok. i got the point
maybe the question should be not how to stop using ubuntu, but how to install windows, I don't know why people feel there is some way to "uninstall" ubuntu, aside form using wubi.
maybe because they don't know, an OS can't be uninstalled. it is removed
@Anwar Well, I'm just saying it's not obvious. You may be right. It's a good thing to discuss on meta. (Oh dear...perhaps I am becoming to much of a meta fiend... :-) )
Got to discuss that on meta.. :)

Q: installing google chromium i.e. chromium on ubuntu 11.10

Mahak GoindaniI want to install google chrome i.e chromium on ubuntu 11.10. I went to the software center,and then tried to install chromium. But the error shown was check your Internet connection but the net was working fine.

Google Chromium?
@EliahKagan yes. i was saying "helping removing ubuntu may be off-topic"
12:49
@jokerdino It's probably a typo. (Or just a mistake. I remember I called it Google Chromium for a while after I started using it, before I realized that Google is not in the name for Chromium.)
I just happened to read the question when fixing the answer.
the answer? may be it is the second answer ;P
heh :P
@jokerdino Edited. (And upvoted Uri Herrera's comment.)
Looks like it is a dupe then. Main dupe - askubuntu.com/questions/77487/…
12:54
@fossfreedom It seems to me that the answers in this duped question ought to be merged into the master question.
@Anwar Ketan Patel specializes in Wine and boot.
@jokerdino Agreed.
can be.
@EliahKagan Thanks.

A: how to install ubuntu 12.04 on mac book pro

EinoI would say, don't do it. I messed up my Windows because I wanted to test Ubuntu. However, it is nearly unpossible to uninstall it and switch back to Windows. If I would be you, I wouldn't do it. Don't waste your Macbook. Ubuntu doesn't run even Modern Warfare 3.

13:21
I feel like a terrible person.
@Chan-HoSuh That is just wrong.
terrible u say?!
@Anwar yeah lol
How many votes are required for a question being considered answered. is it 2?
@jokerdino why?
13:24
@Anwar hm i edited most of his answers >.>
but i didn't downvote any of them though
nice!
@jokerdino Nearly impossible is very subjective. For some people, if they don't have their Windows installation media, switching from any OS to Windows might seem nearly impossible.
@EliahKagan I was talking about the ideology behind the answer. :)
> Don't waste your Macbook. Ubuntu doesn't run even Modern Warfare 3.
hey @Sathya
sock puppetware
@jokerdino when I saw Ubuntu didn't run Modern Warfare 3, I realized I had made a mistake installing Ubuntu! :-p
13:34
@Chan-HoSuh :P
He forgot Mac doesn't run MW3 either
@jokerdino heh... it's funny you know that
What's wrong with me saying that?
don't be so defensive :-) I was just surprised you'd know it didn't run on a Mac. Do you know a gamer with a Mac?
Well, everyone knows no game runs on Mac. :)
Except for Farmville.
aha, well. Ok.
I think what's important is you can run DOSbox on OS X.... really, what more do you need?
13:40
Can dosbox run modern games?
dosbox. lol
@Chan-HoSuh I do know gamers with Macs. Most of them run Windows on their Macs. One of them games on Mac OS X (a number of Steam games--including Half-Life 2 and its offshoots, I understand, run natively on Mac OS X now).
3
looks around. I know nothing about Mac.
4
Nobody's going to star my DOSbox comment?! :-|
@EliahKagan yes, that's true. I haven't kept up, but it always seemed Macs were underpowered for games, even putting aside the OS issue.
@Chan-HoSuh ★
13:43
Incidentally, DOSbox is easy enough to get running on Ubuntu using apt-get :-)
you mean historically? ;P
@jokerdino hi there
@Sathya heya. Who pinged you?
@jokerdino in here? no one, just dropped in
@Sathya Alright. Cool then. Have a nice stay.
13:45
:-)
Is U&L older than AU?
Probably not.
Then i'd say, this guy is awesome
@Anwar He is everywhere :)
He once answered my question on UL. He had 10.5k rep back then.
I am reading this answer from him
I also decided to use that style (before reading his answer)
13:50
The reason he has that much of rep is because, the ratio of posts to voters is pretty high in UL.
er I mean more voters for less posts.
hmm.. are there really less posts?
How do I put it?
You haven't explained anything about /dev/stdin and friends here. The question isn't about how to program in C. — Gilles 11 mins ago
Much less questions. Congregated voters. Significantly high quality answers. == 100k rep
@jokerdino I don't think so, his answers are just awesome.
13:53
I wanted to use his answer to answer that question. God saved me
@Anwar :P
@Sathya Not disagreeing. His answers are top-notch.
believe me, I first wanted to call him to answer this question
Get him above 10k rep. :P
oh, Tim is here, too ;|
@Roland mine is back up to 12, but I'm on it now!
13:55
@Sathya The curious tim? :)
2
can't do it, he is still 500 rep behind
He has less than 5 answers in the entire SE network. Scratch that. less than 10
well, yeah

Q: I have an Nvidia GPU GTX 470 - Can I get it's Serial number with out opening the case?

SaarikoIs it possible to get the serial number of a GPU without opening the box? The current card is an Nvidia GTX470.

yeah, look at the back of the box
lol
@JorgeCastro oh the close votes?
13:57
i have 11 here.
@jokerdino the word was perfect! thanks
@Anwar I have been following him since quite some time. He is one of the peculiar people on the network.
peculiar now you say. I am getting interested.

sure you are, Gilles

Sarcasm level : Gilles
13:59
Then what level we are in?
my rep throughout the network has been stagnant :/
Don't even look at mine.
I'm trying to give mine away!
promises not to look
@JorgeCastro I could use a bump to 3k ;p
find me something to bounty
I have an open bounty I can use
14:02
Sathya, I approve of your proposal.
@JorgeCastro What about a question "setting different default applications for different DE"
But I have upvoted almost all of your posts :/

Q: ubuntu 11.10 gets stuck few minutes after booting

mythi have installed Ubuntu 11.10 it works fine for a while and then it gets stuck.Mouse pointer moves but everything else is frozen.Any help is appreciated

such a fine question
wish AU had a garbage collector.
we do

Q: What should I do when Ubuntu freezes?

ændrükAll operating systems freeze sometimes, and Ubuntu is no exception. What should I do to regain control when... just one program stops responding? nothing at all responds to mouse clicks or key presses? the mouse stops moving entirely? In what order should I try various solutions before decidi...

easy dupe, heh
cleanup.thepcspy.com is a good garbage finder
we just need to use it more
14:08
oh wow, i totally forgot about that
we need one more cleanup before 12.10
yeah, it should be easy now with the close queue
openid failed error is shown. i used my gmail account
same error here
it worked with launchpad account
thanks. got in
14:18
@njallam - I don't know why you're doing it such a tedious way. If you have a notebook of notebooks and you're going to be operating on the text a lot, subclass the interesting page and define a "save" method so you can just builder.get_object("my_custom_thing").get_children()[0].save()
Holy paranoid much? Something has been hidden and renamed unexpectedly... IT MUST BE A VIRUS TARGETING ME FOR EXTORTION!!!! ;) — techie007 Mar 24 at 17:49
OK I'm back!
Jorge is on full cruise mode. Time to take a slack.
i have been given this question , where is @HacktoHell?
14:26
Don't know.
Your highness Gilles makes a presence.
@Sathya yes, as opposed to professional
@Sathya funny, that's not the profile I'd have cited
@Gilles how do you mean?
@Sathya Wouldn't my U&L profile be more relevant?
@Gilles you bio's same, I was mentioning that :) plus your U/L profile is linked above (not oneboxed though)
Just curious. Who pinged him? o_O
14:30
@HacktoHell can you now tell him, what process should he follow? askubuntu.com/q/115843/61218
@Anwar Relax. You are not compelled to cleanup everything.
@Anwar migrate, I can close as dupe & then merge
oh. ok thanks @jokerdino
Just flag for migration as Sathya suggests.
@jokerdino it's that comment thread that Anwar cited (askubuntu.com/a/183241). I was wondering if kmassada was asking for my head in chat (it happens, sometimes — I've had accusations of plagiarism (!), for example, in situations pretty much like this one).
14:38
> if kmassada was asking for my head
lol
@Gilles I don't remember him coming to chat.. at all. Well, I did upvote your answer.
ah, I was forgetting
@Anwar AU is older by a couple of weeks, see askubuntu.com/q/1 and unix.stackexchange.com/q/1 or look at the Area 51 pages
this was back when Area 51 was less strict, otherwise both proposals would have been closed as duplicates of SU and each other
In a way, both the sites left a legacy.
Do you believe they are duplicate?
They should have been closed as dupes of SU.
14:46
@Anwar no, they all have different communities
@jokerdino SU should be closed as a duplicate of U&L + Apple + Windows + PC
(the latter two don't exist)
SU is too broad
^^ exactly, IMHO
@Gilles fair point.
AU has its own audience, the topic is a subset of U&L but the two are very different
you couldn't merge U&L with AU: either the Ubuntu content would drown the rest, or there wouldn't be all that Ubuntu content
@aking1012 I have a tendency to overthink things, also this way makes the file easier to understand in a text editor. Although I agree with you, to sacrifice easy to understand filedata for a working save script may be better.
anyone know a quick way to add tiling to xubuntu?
bodhi has an awesome tiling feature for enlightenment DE
wish I could mimic that
I'm using a tablet with xubuntu so ... really want to keep the xfce panel and compositing and then just make all windows open full screen without wm boxes around them
I could open and close them from a script attached to the xfce panel
14:51
@Gilles I agree. IMO, Robert Carataino explains it well here:
Robert Cartaino on August 13, 2010

Update: we ultimately put this to a vote on each community.

You may have noticed that two similar Area 51 site proposals have reached commitment and launched betas:

You might well ask: aren’t these the very same thing? Why have two communities on the same topic? What, then, is the difference between unix and ubuntu? The answer to this question cuts to the very heart of what community is.

I sometimes wonder what Stack Exchange would look like in an alternate universe; one where we, as Evil Stack Overflow Inc., bypassed the community-process of Area 51 and came up with our own site ideas; a series of logical subjects, neatly organized into their own Q&A sites. …

and then split the screen. since it's only a small 10inch I only would need one split
I know that blue tile is one option
but anyone know of a better option ... blue tile still leaves open/close buttons on the windows as well as an ugly panel
1 more close vote needed to dupe this:

Q: NTFS for Windows

EinoI want to install Windows to my computer. However, Windows needs NTFS -filesystem for hard disk. I want to replace Ubuntu with Windows. How do I do that, because Ubuntu doesn't use NTFS, and Windows installation requires it.

@EliahKagan that was closed in a giffy.
28 minutes without a mod.
Hello @jokerdino
@JoshuaRobison you only want to use xubuntu? or maybe try i3-wm?
14:54
<-- (wonders how Eliah Kagan finds all those questions needing 1 more close votes)
@Anwar 10k close queue
@jokerdino, yeah, i expected a suggestion to use a full tiling wm but I just want to use xubuntu with tiling added onto it... like e17 does
or bodhi linux
I still keep all the compositing and xfce panel which is cool. but just makes all the windows open full screen
i would suggest you ask on SU. Better chance of a good answer.
14:55
and cuts off the open/close buttons
@jokerdino not U&L?
Sure. U&L would work too.
I think Gilles would answer that question anyway :)
:)
@jokerdino no, you might have noticed I hardly ever answer GUI questions
I answer about the tools I know... I've been using sawfish for a long time. Other wms, I don't know much.
the thing is U&L ... I almost never get answers there... is anyone alive in there O_o
14:58
@Gilles I do. You answered my question long time ago on U&L.
I'm actually surprised at askubuntu recently as well....
@JoshuaRobison no one alive in here?
@JoshuaRobison surprised for?
@JoshuaRobison you have a single unanswered question, it's not that bad
ok, I admit I didn't look at the quality of the answers
@jokerdino not so much, when you divide by the number of questions
@jokerdino, so i've posted several questions on askubuntu.com formally and then didn't get any answer for several days... nothing.... so then I come into this chatroom and directly ask the same question and two minutes later I have the answer
