3:00 AM
Yeah, I just meant for the time being that way this summer, I can have an internship where I go in knowing a little bit.

@Flabricorn I'm a roll model though...

@RolandiXor Roll models declassify their locations.

@Flabricorn That reminds me. BRB.
What did you remove?

@Flabricorn but not their origins.
@Mochan his deep love for you.

@Mochan Now you'll never know.

3:02 AM
Coward.

@RolandiXor LOL
@Flabricorn //cries again

Watching Doomsday Preppers gets me so in the mood for writing about an alien invasion with aliens who do nothing but blow up cities and then kill anyone that's left.

3 years to become fluent in two languages. Doesn't seem like a lot of time.

message_deleted != love_confession

@Mochan ¿Porque?

3:03 AM
@RolandiXor If you're going to do that, please sort out your grammar first.

@Flabricorn it was deleted. You don't get to say what it was now ;)

@Flabricorn T__T

@RolandiXor Improper punctuation young man.

@Flabricorn where?

@RolandiXor What do you mean, "because"?

3:05 AM
O_o?
@Mochan ohhhhhhhhhhhh
my mistake

I'd say.

@RolandiXor "@Mochan por que?" - You have improper punctuation.

@Flabricorn sorry about that.

Major in JP and KP

3:06 AM
Been a while since I've used porque/por que.
@Mochan I care.
Your call is important to me.

@Mochan Interesting, very interesting.

Don't push it though, this new script is only valid for a few months, then we go back to "Your call is important to us".

Academic Plan:3119XBLANG Good plan...

@RolandiXor //kick
@RolandiXor -_-
@Flabricorn O__O;
Is this more of a comment?

@Mochan Yes it is.

3:09 AM
@Flabricorn ty

@Mochan You're welcome.
Busy stealing review tasks?

@Flabricorn Yup.
Actually, I did steal. There were two waiting, and it was the same answer. So I did one, marked it as done, refreshed the other page and marked as done. One review == two count.
I cheated O_O

How dare you!

LOL
It's all quiet...

Yes. They are shocked. All of them.

3:16 AM
My charger has been saved.

That's ... uhh ... creative.

Thank you Apple for making cheap crap!

I thought we had this discussion just a few days ago: Clumps of shiny plastic.

Well, it's only so thick because I splinted the charger that way the area that was no longer protected would not bend in that way any longer.

@Flabricorn LOOLL
@FEichinger +1
@Flabricorn Please don't tell me you own a Mac/Macbook

3:25 AM
@Mochan It was free, and I have nothing else.

@Flabricorn Well... OK...
Do you have Ubuntu on it?

@Mochan Clean install, wiped OSX right off. Good riddance.

@Flabricorn Ahhh~ good. Thank God.

I have two Mac machines, both second hand, one is 12.04 one is 12.10, both were extremely cheap or free.
But, on the subject of cheap or free does anyone know anything about Desktops?

@Flabricorn Non-Apple?

3:29 AM
Quite.

Oi! You stole my review task! >:O
@Flabricorn Hm~ what about System76?

@Mochan I did steal that review task. This is war. And, I was more looking into why the CPU is attached to the heatsink in this one I have right here.

@Flabricorn what type of specs are you looking for? Any brands you wish not to include?
@Flabricorn Ohhhh
No idea XD

I'm not sure I understand...

Techgasm
@Flabricorn That makes two of us

3:35 AM
@Flabricorn Uhhh ... what exactly is your issue?

@FEichinger It would appear that the actual processing unit, is completely attached to the heatsink.
That's what I get for buying second hand items.

@Flabricorn That's not good
@Flabricorn +1

Wait ... Now I see it ... Now that's hilarious.
Done by previous owner or intended by manufacturer?

Who on the face of the earth needs 64GB of RAM?

@Mochan Not me.
Graphics designers, gamers with an enormous e-peen?
3d artists?

3:40 AM
@FEichinger I'm assuming previous owner.

@Flabricorn Well, it kinda looks like someone mixed up superglue and paste.

@Mochan me.
@FEichinger there you go.

@RolandiXor y u no use cluster?

AMD Athlon 64

@FEichinger money

3:49 AM
@Mochan someone who's running a classroom all from the server side and all the clients are just thin clients running rdp?

I would like to use a cluster, but I don't have the money to pay the bills, or to use one online.

@RolandiXor I was joking. It's just a tech masochist funfest to go cluster on such stuff :D

@FEichinger :P
@Flabricorn interesante.

Is this even a real question? askubuntu.com/questions/234251/… I mean you can't REALLY answer it.

3:54 AM
It seems hypothetical.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing close it :O!

Doesn't fit Q&A criteria. Might cause heated discussion about the reasons.

It's sort of like saying "Why doesn't MS release teh codez" and expecting it to be a question

There it is: not constructive.

kk i already just "agreed" with whoever already voted

3:57 AM
NARQ

Apparently the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ is a single core processor... What is it doing in this gaming pc?

at one point it was raw top speed or cores and games didn't utilize multiple cores. it changed.

This PC isn't that old though, which is why I was wondering.

that's fair. was just putting it out there

No, it's helpful information.
Hey, if anyone ever finds that they have a CPU stuck to the heat sink, just because of thermal paste over a couple of years, a razor blade will, if applied carefully to the side, will break the seal and the processor will easily come off.

4:08 AM
@Flabricorn: >_>
@Flabricorn: I'm assuming its an AMD, most intel processors since they switched over to LGA have a 'cage' holding the CPU in place

@Flabricorn you could have just twisted it passed the edge of the heatsink

'Tis AMD, Athlon 64 3500+
@AbrahamVanHelpsing It was incredibly stuck on, wouldn't budge an inch.

Rather, a millimeter.

also, single cores arn't that bad
not all that much software is threaded, and I find that in most cases GPU's the weak point

4:11 AM
okay. i've had the suctioned on, but able to twist/slide. that's my solution. twist it until you can break the vacuum ...

and
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Athlon_64_microprocessors Its an early athlon 64, none of them were dual core
I've had dried out
but thats usually gear thats had major heat issues

@RolandiXor are you still around?

@AbrahamVanHelpsing Mmm, I wasn't sure if I was going to break anything. Your way easily could have done the same.

this is true
i broke a heatsink mount on an old intel board taking it off once...a long time ago in a galaxy far away

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, earlier processor, might have had heat issues, the power supply is burnt.

4:19 AM
@Rol you're a blender guy...so question, what is the unit of measure for coordinates in blender for the game engine. e.g. - gravity is set to 9.8 or whatever. if i set realistic weights for objects, should 1 charting unit be 1 meter or what?
i guess i could test it with known size models and expected times to fall large distances, but i thought asking might be easier...

Alright everyone, I'm off.
Good night!

@AbrahamVanHelpsing ya
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Blender has its own units, but it can be a bit confusing when trying to work with real world values. Gravity AFAIK is set to a real world value, so you can set your gravity to something like earth an get realistic results, but the distances on the other hand are very different.
I'd have to do some digging and find out how to convert between Blender's units and real world units.

yeah, i thought it might make a good question for blender SE proposed...anyway. scale being constant gravity should work properly. i just didn't know if there was a good unit conversion

Speaking of that proposal - how is it doing?
I haven't checked Area 51 in a while.

4:31 AM
it's not looking so good

=(
Maybe if I share it on the Blender Communities on G+...

maybe. there's still a glimmer of hope - see the edits on discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/questions/5862/…

Cool

4:50 AM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing PIV? been there done that ;p

the heatsink was caked with smoker residue anyway. i just ordered a heatsink that came with the mobo mounting assembly thing

i'm a dirty smoker too, so i couldn't complain about it.

Q: Why are some hats not awarded?

RolandiXorEven though I've done what was required, some hats are not being awarded. Why is this? (I'm not chasing hats (don't care really lol), but just noticed along the way that some are missing or have big delays).

6:28 AM
well I missed a lot.

@GeorgeEdison I feel honored if I am not saying too much.
Though, I have been occupied with other things at the moment.

@jokerdino! LTNS!

Hi

Are you going to go for mod in 13?

13?
You mean 2013?
Probably not, but I haven't really made up my mind yet.
What really matters if there is indeed an election coming up.
anyway, i'll be back later in the day.

See ya...?

10:12 AM

@owl It's helpful to have screenshots, but it would be more help if it were written. It makes the post cleaner and easier to load. But - besides that - do you have Windows? If so, does it occur there?

owl
It does not occur on Windows. Thx for your tip. I bought this computer with Windows 7 pre-installed in it.

Yeah, a lot of people have the same situation (including me). Um... what have you tried to wake it up?

owl
No, I set the computer to "do nothing" when lid is closed, and when I reopen it, it only shows me a blank black screen.
Have no problems when I installed it on my other older computer

No, I mean - have you pressed keys, the touchpad/mouse?

owl
10:20 AM
No, just closed the lid

I don't think you understand. When you close your lid and then reopen it, what do you do? Do you just turn it off?

owl
No, I have a blank screen so I have to turn it off and on it again.

OK. When that happens, please try:
1) Pressing many keys on the keyboard
2) Moving your mouse or touchpad
3) Pressing the power button *once*.
4) Report back with the results.
I know you've set it to 'do nothing', but you never know. Ubuntu is not perfect. Especially not with nVidia.

owl
Ok. I can't try it on this environment, but I will test it and update the post as soon as possible. THX!

@owl No problem, I hope it works for you.

owl
10:38 AM
I am using Linux Mint now and there was no problems when I closed the lid and reopened it. But I like Ubuntu's features

Did you try in Ubuntu like I told you to?

owl
Going to reinstall and test it ltr

OK. But please do not ask me for any help. I don't mean to sound rude, but if you are looking for advice - you should at least take it.

Q: Can questions closed but not as duplicates have their answers merged?

Eliah KaganIt is possible for a moderator to merge a question that's closed, but not as a duplicate? For example, this too localized question doesn't seem like a candidate for reopening, except that it seems to be a duplicate of another question and it has a good answer that would also help that question: ...

@AbrahamVanHelpsing there is someone who hacked the hats

@jrg around?

@iSeth No hacking involved. Their gravatar itself has those images included. It's clever, but it doesn't look anything like having actual hats, which extend beyond the borders of your gravatar. I can't imagine that this would be considered a violation of any policy.

@EliahKagan Yes I know. He only has one hat. Its still 'hacking' them though. There isn't another way to do it without access to the servers AFAIK.
I don't mean literal hacking of anything.

@iSeth I know what you mean, but I disagree. This is like saying that someone whose gravatar is a picture of an onion is fraudulently claiming to be an onion. The hats are smaller and are shown inside the gravatar--if you look at anyone wearing hats on the site, you'll see that the hats are larger and extend beyond the gravatar.
Further, since there are multiple "hats" shown at the same time in the gravatar, but only one "real" hat can be work at a time, it's obviously not an attempt to fool anyone into thinking he has those hats. (Also, what do you mean by "access to the servers"? Everytime we use the site we're "accessing the servers.")

I don't know why you are thinking that is what I meant at all...
he downloaded them and added them to his own picture.
there was an earlier conversation about this that you weren't at.

5:11 PM
Oh, ok. Seems I'm out of the loop then. And perhaps I left my sense of humor by my beside. :) I had thought you were objecting to his avatar.
If not, my bad.

no, there isn't anything wrong with it. @AbrahamVanHelpsing was asking is anyone had tried to "hack" the hats and add more than one/get ones you don't have.

@iSeth it's photoshop not a hack. the hats mostly overlap the picture borders

face palm
just forget it.

this is getting ridiculous.

5:15 PM
It seems perhaps I've stirred up a mini-muckstorm unnecessarily. Sorry! :(

@EliahKagan its OK :)

It was for a while more after my arrival.

ahhh, I can only comment every 15 seconds... that's such a long time :/

Q: sudo and root user

w_dsi am new to ubuntu, so maybe the question will sound noobish - i warned you ;-) i've installed ubuntu desktop 12.10 on a fujitsu amilo 1536 notebook. it works just fine. to extract a tar-archive i need root-privilegies but i haven't. i can't use sudo to switch because the user i use is not in ...

interesting question.

@iSeth i don't think so...download the tar as a non-root user. he's asking how to get root he's not entitled to in order to install software. i'ld post the redownload as non-root, but it would sound...mean.

Q: How can I see the review status of an edit?

guntbertA few days ago I suggested an edit to a question (Terminal bell without a PC speaker to correct a wrong path). Can I see the review status? The place in the review queue? I may have made the edit as anonymous user.

@guntbert - your edit was either applied or rejected. it's not pending. see my comment on your meta question

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I wondered....

@AbrahamVanHelpsing @AbrahamVanHelpsing thx, so it will not hurt if I suggest the edit a second time?

@guntbert it won't hurt as long as you're sure the edit is right. suggesting wrong edits gets irritating for people that review them, but someone might have seen it and changed something else forgetting your particular edit

I don't lose any rep for downvotes anymore... whats up with that?

9:22 PM
@iSeth questions versus answers

ah, OK.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing thx for the words of caution :)

Q: Nuking Help Required

Dragoniz3rI am sad to say it, but I am turning my back on Ubuntu. One last thing I need to know though is how to nuke my hard drive. I have tried a couple sites, but they are all using Ubuntu Live CD's, which I am assuming means they want to get rid of a standing OS, white downloading Ubuntu. What I need i...

that desperately needs a new title.
but I'm not sure what he wants

fixed
he wants someone to suggest dban or similar
it's an anti-ubu nut trolling

you really think that?

9:26 PM
yes.i.do. it could be a fedora/bsd junkie (i like bsd, but not enough to troll ubuntu discussion areas). just saying. it could be a "ubuntu is an african word for can't configure debian" type of fellow
that's actually a definition in the urban slang website. just saying someone had to add it

interesting

i desperately wanted to add a comment to that definition -- and debian is a word for doesn't understand the meaning of UX
anyway...moving on

I hate that site.
almost nothing useful.

no reason to hate the site any more or less than any other. let it go. it's just a popular troll-ism for people that feel superior because they use linux, not want other people to use it
it has occasionally helped me explain a slang term or two to @jokerdino - what i mean to say is it's more useful for non-native english speakers

No.

9:32 PM
sometimes it is.

@RolandiXor no at what...and NEW HAT

BBL

@RolandiXor i have a nice gold watch for you btw...it's really cheap

Ouch, I get "Oops! Your edit couldn't be submitted because:
Edits must be at least 6 characters; is there something else to improve in this post?" - isn't that silly? I have to edit more than necessary - but now I know why the first edit didn't even make i into the queue - I must have overlooked that error message :-)

@RolandiXor not a lot, you? i'm making some courseware and thinking about things that "should already exist" because i'm making a course. it's alternately enlightening, frustrating, and homicidal maniac enducing -- i was serious until the last one...

@AbrahamVanHelpsing catching up compiz news and resting from a long day

@guntbert just add comment whitespace. it's called a ninja edit if you add a funny message in there
direct quote what you are trying to fix here and i'll show you if you want
@RolandiXor i'm listening to a la roux glitch mob mashup on loop at the moment...so yeah. my long day is not over

9:40 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing tried that, but the system was smarter, it said "6 non white space characters" - no worries, I found a needed "a " to be able to submit the edit, but thx for the offer

and i was working on documentation at a laundrymat. i'm either that epic or that awful depending on how you look at it

lol

@guntbert check the source ... like try to edit again.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'll remember that.

it's horribly useful when something stupid legit needs a one character edit or line breaks with only whitespace additions

9:45 PM
I've had those times.

I'm writing an article on packaging a Qt5 app.

@GeorgeEdison question, do they have a package for mult platform button yet?

Not yet.
The framework itself never took care of packaging for any platform.

they'ld have me at go if there was a "build for all platforms" option where i got a .app .exe and whatever for linux

I could create something that did all but the Mac .app.
I had a script like that for StackApplet that built the Windows installer.
On Windows you basically have two choices: Inno Setup and NSIS.

9:48 PM
no offense, i really appreciate it...but if it doesn't cross the build for mac hurdle it still makes me buy mac os.

If you are cross-compiling, you have only one choice: NSIS.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing There's essentially no way to develop for the Mac without a Mac.
I've tried. Trust me.

the use case is "i'm comfortable using mingw32/64, gcc. i just want apple to stop being a retard"

Even went as far as downloading the 4GB XCode SDK... and got lost.
Cross-compiling for the Mac... it's right up there with time travel.

then i must figure it out ;) insta-billionaire
listening to sublime is measurably less pleasurable when you're sober...just saying

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I'd likely pay $100 for something that could reliably cross-compile Qt apps for the Mac.
...and now I have a new business idea :)

9:53 PM
yeah, but how many developers are in that boat? just saying. it's def a billion dollar idea

An online service that you upload a .tar.gz to and twenty minutes later receive an .exe, .app, and .deb/.rpm containing installers / binaries.
That way I keep the "magic code" that does it all proprietary and charge a monthly fee.

i think it sort of exists atm, it's just not a button in Qt studio or whatever you call it

But not if you don't have a Mac.
I'll say it again: ain't nobody compiling for Mac without a Mac.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing good idea - thx for the hint + the final edit :)

@guntbert np if i could reparent it to you and demonstrate at the same time i would...but i can't
@GeorgeEdison there are mac build services

9:57 PM
