@EliahKagan keep it open

@jokerdino I shall.

@lazyPower oh i'm also re-installing with openbox xcompmgr and some other bits...tired of my nvidia getting hot with unity

Ah here is @jokerdino

Now who shall answer? ;)

Interesting
I've not had any issues with unity - but it seems like many are moving away from the 3dbydefault desktop.

10:07 AM
@smartboyhw I am starting to think you are actually a troll.

@jokerdino er why?

You provoke.

BBL

@jokerdino er.......

@lazyPower i like 3d support by default, but i think it's a little heavy the way it's currently implemented

10:09 AM
I can see that. I think I spend too much time in a terminal to really see the issue. My nvidia hasn't spiked without some 3d wine action as a catalyst.
but, thats me, ymmv

yeah, wasn't an issue on the desktop...is on the laptop

Ah, makes sense.
I thought your desktop rig was beast, i see my memory hasn't failed me.
i went with an ultrabook style laptop - haven't looked back. Carrying around under 3 lb's is a joy.

i'm actually liking openbox. thinking about slapping together a little "me" pseudo-package to pull in all the way i like it stuff once i get it set up in a vm just so

We should close this as off-topic, as it should be a bug report (and it's in 12.10):

Q: Unity failure on 12.10 after upgrade from 12.04

mohamed mekkawyAfter upgrade to 12.10, Ubuntu starts as normal however the system only loads the desktop background, the left/upper bars is not displayed and Ubuntu reports that gnome-control-center failed.

+1

i think it is the case of annoying configurations.
blow them away on every upgrade and you will solve half the bugs.

This question should be closed as a duplicate:

Q: How to change login wallpaper?

MochanSo, say my wallpaper is a picture of my family or something, or a picture of a flower. But, when I log in, I don't want my family/flower to show on the log in screen but instead be something separate. Is there a possible way to do this? Like, say, this is my desktop image: But for my log in scr...

they should know... its 'beta' :3

Of this question (the OP explicitly says this solved the problem, and wants the question closed):

Q: How do I change the wallpaper in LightDM?

Jorge CastroI would like to set the wallpaper in LightDM, how do I do that?

10:29 AM
ohh... i seen one post similar to this

A: What tools exist to report bugs

jokerdinoAll 12.04 systems, including desktop and server, have an "Ubuntu Error Reporting" daemon called whoopsie. It, along with apport, is part of the Ubuntu error tracker project. While it isn't one of the tools that allow you to report bugs, it is part of the system that processes the bug reports. S...

@EliahKagan Do you think that answer is enough? --^

@jokerdino I think more information about other tools, and about how to make Apport send a crash bug to Launchpad rather than using Whoopsie, might be helpful. Some of that could be provided in a different answer (by someone else), though. I do think your answer is good and appropriate.

@EliahKagan I would have but only if the question was generalized enough.
since he already mentions it, i wasn't sure if i should mention it nevertheless.

You may want to add information about how ubuntu-bug and apport-bug are really the same, and also information about apport-cli.

10:35 AM
Right. Will add.

@penreturn Good one:D

brb... going to my parents house... see ya!

Wow wait the last starred post is the @RolandTaylor post about @msPeachy can dump @jokerdino 19 hours ago? Nothing interesting in between?

10:52 AM
BRB

@jokerdino, sorry I wasn't able to answer your offer. Thanks so much for your concern

11:08 AM

Hey @msPeachy

:(((

@Mochan no problem
@msPeachy what about other review tasks?

@msPeachy Good job:)

11:30 AM
heya @WilliamHilsum

Hi
I was about to ask something, but, I think it is best as a question on the main site!

you can do both ;)

Indeed--for example, you can post it on the main site, then post a link to it here.

@msPeachy High Five
Same here

Ok... When i know it is a quicky, I like asking here - but, I know this one will be useful to others, so, best on the site

11:32 AM
Hey @AmithKK @OliveTwist

@WilliamHilsum Nothing wrong with that. :)

hi everyone

hi

hi @jokerdino @smartboyhw

@OliveTwist hi

11:34 AM
is there any thing like cpuz for Linux?
@AmithKK o/

@OliveTwist Hello ^^

Hi @Mochan

@Mochan Hi

Hi @smartboyhw and @OliveTwist :)
...anyone feel like solving a hard problem of mine? ಠ_ಠ

the icons are nice

11:37 AM
@Mochan i was.
long time no see banshee

@Mochan what this hard problem?

@EliahKagan: why do you think that password Q is not a dupe?

@jokerdino Hahaha. It's a different one though. I think. Long time no see indeed. I should muck around here some more

here you go @jokerdino and @EliahKagan ... hopefully not to silly...

Q: Where should I be looking/learning about the changes between Ubuntu (server) editions?

wilhilI maintain a few Ubuntu servers and it works great... but, I now have notifications on a few that state there is a new release available and I should run do-release-upgrade. Since these servers were initially provisioned, I have create a few extra ones that are on the newest version, and, I have...

@Takkat hello

Q: Dependencies not met on 12.04?

MochanNow I'm very aware that there are many questions out there that are quite similar to what I'm experiencing, but I have looked through many and I have not found a suitable answer. You are welcome to suggest questions that are similar, but I doubt that it will help. Getting on to the issue at hand,...

@WilliamHilsum check the release notes ofcourse

Hi @OliveTwist - what about a new avatar? ;)

@Takkat Because the related question doesn't have an answer that says how to remove the minimum entropy requirement...and adding an answer with that information would probably not fall within the scope of that question.

@Takkat Agree! Hi also:D

@Takkat what are you talking about?

11:39 AM
@jokerdino I said that at the end, but, I am sure I missed a few things... if that is the official place, then, maybe I just need to read better!

I have tried all apt-get commands in terminal... all are deemed useless because the libapt-pkg4.12 and libapt-pkg4.12:i1382 (?) are both broken for some reason///

Hi @smartboyhw

@OliveTwist Changing the gravatar :D

@smartboyhw It takes ages ;A; I changed mine a couple hours ago and it still hasn't chnaged

@WilliamHilsum What version are you on and which one are you upgrading to?

11:40 AM
@EliahKagan kk :)

@Mochan yes it does

@OliveTwist the present one is so unfractalish.

hmm.

@smartboyhw Very annoying. Spell check is annoying me too. Changed*

@Mochan you are using 64bit?

11:43 AM
@OliveTwist Yes. Why? -craves info-

disabled all 3rd parties?

@OliveTwist Check.
Did I mention that I destroyed the Software Centre in the process of trying to fix it? //cries
...Tricky, isn't it?

what were you trying before this?
like installing or removing

Before? Like what I installed or how I installed it?

@jokerdino well, I am not really doing anything at the moment (as I am worried to do it), It is 10.04.3 on a few... and installing the latest LTS in test

11:47 AM
I think, some installation or removal process get closed/interrupted . is it? @Mochan

on the latest, it was where I saw a few differences and just wanted to know how I can learn before I deploy

@WilliamHilsum i added an answer. in short, check release notes and changelogs

@OliveTwist ...I'm not sure. As far as I knew, I haven't really done much installing. I think the last program I installed was like Xscreensaver or something... the last thing I did with the apt was probably installing a indicator or something.
Hi @hakermania

Oh god! I installed AutoCAD student edition at my Windows partition and it seems to have altered some windows registry entries
now I have stuck to an infinite reboot loop, right after the bios load

@Mochan try to open the history.log file in /var/log/apt and give the last installation part

11:50 AM
I cannot see the grub loader etc.... Only a blinking cursor for 2 seconds and then reboot again... My files are OK though (speaking through a live cd now)

@jokerdino That's fine - I read the basic release notes and found nothing.... I just see pro Linux guys and I really don't feel like that at all despite doing this for the best part of 6 months now.. If this is what you guys do, then, guess it is the right thing to do

@OliveTwist Will do. BRB

sorry, that sounds wrong... I know I am not pro from just 6 months!

Well, I am not pro.

I just mean, well... you know... so many mysteries!

11:51 AM
Definitely not with servery stuff

@OliveTwist Blank.

you did the last installation from terminal or software center? @Mochan

@hakermania I think this is more of a Windows problem. Especially if it messed with the Windows registries. You ought to look in a Windows 7 forum or something similar. I'm sure it would be harder for us to help you here :)

@hakermania it probably messed with your MBR (e.g. for copy protection) - try to reinstall Grub but AutoCAD may then not work anymore.

@OliveTwist Terminal, most likely.

11:54 AM
@Mochan Try downloading the respective packages i.e libapt... and install it with dpkg
BRB

@Mochan I don't have a Windows repair CD and there doesn't seem to be any other option for me rather than fixing it through a live usb. @Takkat This is what I believe. Should I try to re-install grub to the partition it was before?

@Takkat Actually it turns out that did fully meet the OP's needs. So I recommend closing this question as a duplicate of this one after all.

@hakermania Oh I see! Sorry, I must of misread something there ;)

/me suggests closing the manhole cover over Eliah.

@EliahKagan time solves issues ;)

11:55 AM
@jokerdino +10000

@OliveTwist Where would I get the packages from?

@hakermania yeah just put it back where it was.

That was a joke. No malicious intent :S

@Takkat the grub is installed on the linux partition. How was windows able to access and modify it (BOOT NOOB HERE :D) ?

@Mochan 12.04 or 12.10? if 12.04 check packages.ubuntu.com

11:56 AM
@OliveTwist 12.04. I'll do that :)

@hakermania it needs to be on on the boot drive - not partition. E.g. /sda not /sda1

They actually have Quetzal listed too, but nvm
Hey @msPeachy

@hakermania it the MBR GRUB boot record that resides there. Grub itself may be anywhere.

@jokerdino done too, will try again later

@msPeachy woah

11:58 AM
@Takkat I see. So all Operating Systems have access to sda and sdaN represent the partitions. Any good guide to follow?

check meta review queue then :P

@OliveTwist It doesn't seem to be there. Not under 'Libraries' anyway.

what is wrong with you?
:D

@jokerdino meta? okay will go there
