Can you answer this? Ubuntu Server 12.04 as a router. Problem with DNS?? Or Routing table? http://askubuntu.com/q/193239?atw=1 #networking

12:20 AM
Is there a generic performance question this can be duped to? I don't think it's likely to be answerable.

Q: 12.04- ubuntu becoming too slow

Hello, i mouted my new ssd as a secondary drive, but i cant seem to find it on my ftp client
where do i look for the harddrive?

@ccrama Try /media. The disk is monuted where the FTP client is running, not on the server?

no the ftp client is on my pc. The ubuntu server currently has 2 harddrives. The only harddrive that shows though is my original harddrive
but il try /media
nope its not there\

hmm
not there either o_o

12:25 AM
Are you sure you monuted it? Search for palimpsest or disk utility and check the mount point there

i think i did something wrong

Or issue mount wuthout any arguments in a terminal.

ok one sec
lemme ssh
carlos@carlos-A880GM-M7:~$ mount
/dev/mapper/carlos--A880GM--M7-root on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755)
thats the output of mount

You sure ths disk is plugged in and spinning up?
BBL

Its a SSD
il check cables again

Q: How do I install a DVD decryption library?

rocket101I recently built a computer running Ubuntu 11.10. It works great, except for one thing. With some video DVDs, when I insert them into my drive, the movie player just says "An error occurred. Could not read DVD. This may be because the DVD is encrypted and a DVD decryption library is not installed...

Q: How can I play encrypted DVD movies?

eugenemarshallMy machine can't play encrypted DVDs on a fresh install. How do I add this capability? Another useful bit of information would be what programs are best for playing DVDs, once I'm able to do so. See the similar question here. Will I be able to play DVD movies from any region?

@ccrama I'm not sure what the solution is, but it seems to be the same problem as in this unanswered question:

Q: Disk '______' doesn't contain a valid partition table

JimHaving recently run through EnableHibernateWithEncryptedSwap, I now get 3 separate 'Disk doesn't contain a valid partition table' when I run sudo fdisk -l: Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--t10194-root doesn't contain a valid partition table <br/> Disk /dev/mapper/ubuntu--t10194-swap_1 doesn't con...

Is it your intention to use LVM on the drive?

OH the problem was that i didnt mount the drive to a directory
i just did mkdir /hd2
and /mount /dev/sdb1 /hd2
and it seems to be working
:)

@ccrama Cool. I'm glad you solved the problem. Does this mean you'd be able to answer that open question?

oh well turns out that i didnt read it right
the othere drive is my booting harddrive
so theres still a problem tehre
but its functioning fine
so idk whats up with that drive

Q: How can I share drives on home network?

BenLike to share whole drives on a home network not only folders, not a unix user and an old trying to learn, need simple instruction I can follow. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Q: Share Ext4 Partition Over Network

Binyamin SharetI have an Ext4 partition (not auto-mounted) that I would like to share (entirely) in my home that contains Mac OSX, Windows and Linux machines (currently the most important is sharing with the Mac). How may I do this?

(Unrelated to all of the above.) Is it really true that Ubuntu One doesn't work from behind a proxy server? If not, did that used to be the case? Why would there be such a limitation?

how do i duplicate files from one directory to another?
i want to duplicate the files from /craftbukkit to /hd2/craftbukkit

Q: How to relocate the Unity top panel to the bottom?

okramerHow can I relocate the Ubuntu 12.04 task bar (a.k.a. title bar) -- NOT the launcher bar. The task bar is currently at the top of both displays and I want it on the bottom of one. It contains the clock, volume, shutdown menu icon, etc.

Am I right that the question is a dupe? I edited the title
Dropping this here so I can check back when I get home

@jokerdino Yes, I believe it's a duplicate. And Oli's answer in the dupe target answers it. If necessary the terse answer present in the dupe candidate can be merged in, but either way, I think this should be closed as a duplicate. I have close-voted.

Thank you

Oh thanks. ALso how can i exclude files?

1:54 AM
@ccrama What sort of exclusion criteria do you have? Also, while we're at it, what are your requirements (if any) for the ownership, permissions, and timestamps for the copy? (If you have sophisticated requirements, rsync might do the job better than cp.)

Well i think im just gonna tar it up and copy to new file location
and use the --exclude flag
how would i use rsync?

@ccrama Similarly to cp, but it supports more advanced options. See the manpage for details. It supports exclusion options similar to tar.

ok thanks
:)

jrg
I <3 rsync

@msPeachy don't tell our AU mods. they will feel hurt.

Q: How to submit a Tiffany Bridals video to youtube.com?

stacbrideYouTube is a video-sharing website, created by three former PayPal employees in February 2005, on which users can upload, view and share videos.

spam

@jokerdino Oh no, it is just an observation.
good morning to you too

good morning.
I know SU mods are pretty fast. but they also have a high mod turnover.

high mod turnover? what does it mean?

they burnout and resign

3:07 AM
Oh I see
but they sure are fast

yes they are. they usually handle my flags within the first half hour
and they also hang out in chat often.
probably it helps one of the mods live in my time zone.
compared to AU mods who don't share my time zone

mine within minutes, I just flagged 2 now

ok that's insane

yes, well the latter still waiting to be reviewed but the first one was approved

maybe because they have more 20k active users who review more often?

3:13 AM
I see
do they have a gen room too?

@msPeachy they do.
@msPeachy i don't know actually. i am just speculating.

 Root Access

For all you Super Users out there. You have backups, right?

oh okay
will check it out
and you're there too

yeah. i usually hang around in that room.
but just joined it because i was too lazy to get the link earlier

whoa I've just seen the progress bar on my AU review

i think they added it today or something
didn't see it yesterday for sure

3:16 AM
same here

(note to self: cleanup drive and external)

how many drives do you have?

i was talking about the tags on the site. :P
i have a single HDD and a couple of usb drives

ohhh lol
there's a hard-drive tag right?

yeah
i need to map external to external-hdd or external-monitor
but we also seem to need an external-soundcard

3:21 AM
too many external
btw, how was the party?

there was none

how about a cake?

a couple of them

that's nice
who made them?

i think my friends bought them or something

3:25 AM

nope o.O

lol sure

lol
next year have a beer or a glass of wine.

maybe
i dont drink

3:28 AM
I don't drink beer but I like wine.

Can you answer this? Custom LightDM sessions to launch an application http://askubuntu.com/q/116155?atw=1 #lightdm

@msPeachy i have only tried root beer so far

root beer?

day dreaming

lol
my mother loves root beer
but we're gonna have wine later since it's her birthday today

3:32 AM

Here I give some supplement. In my notebook, the excpetions is threw by gspca_main module. So I removed the gspca_main mod...

yeah looks like it

@msPeachy I think it (or part of it) is a substantive comment on the answer to which it refers. I'd recommend it be converted to a comment (and preferably shortened in the process).

3:42 AM
he did add something but still

@msPeachy I do think it should be flagged.

ok i should stop retagging now

@EliahKagan okay, thank you and o/
@jokerdino lol

there were some other tags i wanted to retag. can't remember now

when you say retag, you search for questions with that tag and manually edit them?

3:44 AM
yeah

wow that's quite tedious

sorta
there aren't better ways.
unless a mod is free and willing

what are tag are you replacing it with

i was replacing external with external-hdd or external-monitor or external-soundcard

(Unrelated to the above.) The OP has confirmed in a comment that this question was fully answered by an answer to this earlier question. So we should go ahead and dupe it.

3:46 AM
@jokerdino I can do that after I finish my review.

@msPeachy good luck. there are some other weird uses of external as well.
haven't figured them yet

okay, good luck to us
@EliahKagan yes I think so too

@Eliah, can you edit tripleboot tag wiki to three or more? that would be nice i guess

triple or more?

yeah

3:49 AM
how about multiboot

Is this spam?

multiboot is duped to dualboot
@EliahKagan yes

dual means two

@jokerdino Probably. Hold on.

but multi means many

3:50 AM
it was flagged on other SE sites
@msPeachy so, the best thing is triple boot
personally i would have wanted multiboot but we can't recover it

I see

@EliahKagan ping me so i can approve the edit when you are done. thanks much
Thanks; done.

@jokerdino I've edited the tag. You can approve it...then if you prefer it be worded differently than I did, go ahead and edit it and I should be able to approve your changes.

it sounded fine. i approved it

@EliahKagan Multiple posts on multiple sites. Flagged them in as many places as possible.

@jokerdino: besides, least on SU, I get VERY irate if I need to get off my arse and flag something

:D
@JourneymanGeek I give you retag privs. Now help me retag stuff.

lol
I don't like to do retags either ;p

who does?!
not even mods like it :P
you can take and play with them

i'm writing an answer..
hope, i won't be very wrong

@Naveen installing 3.6 isn't an official way. but you can add quantal repos and install from their i guess. and you need to keep doing this to get updates too

@GeorgeEdison oh

I hate it when the solution is that simple.

5:45 AM
lol

@Anwar you still here?

Any important matters?

If you read this later take a look at this edit: askubuntu.com/revisions/196593/2 The question is assumed to be on-topic and editing only to bold-face 'my Iphone' just inflames the close-voters. Consider cancelling your down-vote (if you did) and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Good day to all!

@Takkat Hello!

@TomBrossman Wow, what do you call that? Subliminal something.

6:15 AM
@jokerdino I think the only way to get a question closed faster is to change it to 'So, I'm using Mint and ...'

Yes haha
I also edit mergelist questions' title

@TomBrossman how did this question come to (4) close votes before the OP even had a chance to comment on the OS they are using?
Sometimes we close too quickly (me included)

@Takkat well if a question has -2 downvotes on front page, people naturally get curious

Can you answer this? Unity greeter background on Xubuntu 12.04 http://askubuntu.com/q/144863?atw=1 #xubuntu

Dunno, probably just a misunderstanding. If it's on-topic they still get good answers if it gets closed accidentally.

6:16 AM
@jokerdino Yeah but the OP should be given a chance to improve. Reopening is much harder.

yes but where is he?

Its only an hour ago. Some people do not sit in front of their monitors staring at things that might happen or not.

@jokerdino He's booting into Mint and will be right back!

lol

lol, that would be hilarious

Should this be migrated?

GCC is on topic on SO

its 2 years old...

It's about installing GCC on Ubuntu, not about using it.
@Takkat It is, but 10.04 is still supported, plus that exact error does occur on Precise.

It is one of the dev tools and is definitely on topic on SO.

I'm testing the solution now.
@jokerdino OK. I will not flag it for closure.

6:20 AM
@EliahKagan don't we have a question on that already?
seems we have not...

i find that question familiar

@msPeachy well, you can either edit it into an answer or flag it for deletion and ask Ryan to make an answer.

what would you do?

@jokerdino how can I tell if it is eth0, eth1, or something else?

i think the command was ifconfig
bah, i know so little about networking
should install arch
@msPeachy i would look for duplicate question

But how can I tell which listed interface (if any) is the one I want (digital...)

@jokerdino okay

6:34 AM
@soandos clearly it is not eth1
do you have a ppp0 or something?

True..
what do you mean?

what other interface do you have?

eth1

im thinking eth0 here

@soandos The 00:15:5D MAC looks up to Microsoft, so probably not your DEC chip from the screengrab, right?

@TomBrossman considering that this is a virtual network switch out of microsoft hyper V it might very well be the chip
@jokerdino it is not waiting for network connection to boot up.
