It won't load any operating systems, not even vista. And it's sad to say but I can't find out what its saying as the error cause my screen is broken :P

hahahahahah

:D?
:)?
Anyone?
I am all alone.

@RolandTaylor not quite alone but with someone who has not a good idea (yet).

lol
Know how to get a Toshiba to turn on when the power cord seems to be shot?

How do you read errors without a screen?

8:06 PM
+1 @Takkat :D

(Or know how to tell if the laptop works without power :P?)
(Yes that's insane)

@RolandTaylor it is - only kids still have fun with powerless equipment.

@Takkat :)

My boy takes them apart, my girl plays "office" ;)

so I'm stuck between a Toshiba that needs a new power cord, and my dv7 works but the screen is broken and grub is being... itself.

8:07 PM
You don't have a replacement cord, I guess,

Sometimes they still work in a very subtle certain position.
But this could as well cause a short circuit anywhere.

:P
Welcome to my life :)

Only when the cable is broken mechanically. If it's the external power supply this may be the cuplrit.

I got some new power cords for my old laptops (well one is not mine technically)

8:10 PM
Your life is great - you are an Ubuntero!

and my dv7 is not letting me get in without this live usb
and the usb drive belongs to my brother.

All family - there is worse in this world.

@Takkat I consider great having a phone.
And a working system.
And enough money to make you satisfied.

There never is enough money.
Not even if too much money is the main cause of lack of sleep.

^ yeahhh

8:13 PM
But if you don't have a power cord because of lack of money that's a good reason to complain.
Is the power supply still working?

That's not why I don't have a working power cord for it
I was given it just today
I don't have a proper laptop because of a lack of money
To put it in perspective, I have never owned an android device
or even a symbian device
get it?

wewww

@RolandTaylor: good can be done with a soldering iron. Bad needs replacement.
@RolandTaylor I never had a smartphone. Only my wife needs such things.
My kids start needing such things :/
I am happy with my desktop.

8:23 PM
I've never had one either - could never afford it :)

Its not very new.

cool
@penreturn your rep?

i donno... cant understand the stack applet... its showing more rep :D

has anyone understand January's question? askubuntu.com/questions/194382/…
I don't get it at all...

@hakermania my spontaneous thought was of a webcam attached on the ceiling to see who physically sits at the console...

8:30 PM
@Takkat how the heck does somebody thing that the PC can through a keyboard and a mouse to detect who is the physical person typing to it? You need some kind of detection, like you say

I think he needs to know the user who is typing at present, irrespect of who is logged in on the other TTYs
Who's TTY is active in other words. But even the active TTY is a virtual one, as I understand this all.
Never came across this question so I have no idea how or even if this can be done.

I don't know what to do with my dv7
:/

jrg
@penreturn what setup is that?

the longest question + explanation i've ever seen...

I will have to try to create a 64bit live usb and try that
it's my only hope :/

8:32 PM
@RolandTaylor is the drive/cables broken?

@jrg which one?

@Takkat nope - the drive works fine
the problem is grub - but I don't know what the problem with grub is!

jrg
@penreturn your last screenshot

stackapplet.py
it shows current rep, inbox, notice

jrg
i meant the desktop environment. i know it's stackapplet. :P

8:34 PM
@RolandTaylor Grub says it can't find the drive it looks for. So either Grub looks the wrong place or the drive is damaged.

@jrg shell

jrg
kde, xfce, enlightment, gnomeshell, something else?

@Takkat how do you know?

LOL!hahahahaha

jrg
@Takkat makes sense.

8:34 PM
I don't think the drive could actually be damaged, because I can actually access it :(

jrg
what does disk utility say? i could access my drive, but it was failing and failing fast and hard.

40 mins ago, by Roland Taylor
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?).

@jrg I have to install it

jrg
@RolandTaylor it isn't on the live usb?

@Takkat I've had that error before and fixed it
@jrg not that I can tell

Its been on for 44 days, and has 2359382 bad sectors, so i'm "ok", right?
i mean, i'm so dumb, but i was still operating with that many bad sectors. you could just have bad sectors in the wrong place. :P

@jrg lol

@RolandTaylor it has only one drive, has it? BIOS?

@Takkat yes one drive, can't access the bios

jrg
fun.

xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ fuser /dev/sda5
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ sudo fuser /dev/sda5
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$
but yet!
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ sudo umount /mnt/sdmatey
umount: /mnt/sdmatey: device is busy.
(In some cases useful info about processes that use
the device is found by lsof(8) or fuser(1))
I tried to chroot, but that didn't work

jrg
8:39 PM
can you reboot?

wait, let me try something
I will have to reboot :(
but I don't persistence on this usb
so I'll just go through the hard work one time and see if I can get this 64bit iso
AHAHAHAHA
I AM GOING INSANE

ouch

What did I do. Really...
First I lost my phone.
Then a laptop dropped.
Now this.
I am supposed to give up technology?

Did you try to sudo grub-setup /dev/sda?
@RolandTaylor technology is made by human beings for human beings. I sometimes doubt that.

@Takkat just did that - am I supposed to see output?

8:49 PM
@RolandTaylor dunno - it prepares the drive/MBR for Grub.

i.hate.getting.a.flat.tire. /rage
3

@Takkat prepares?

@RolandTaylor checked in a VM it gave no output. That always a bit eerie.

what does that mean?
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ sudo grub-setup /dev/sda
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ sudo grub-install /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?).
xubuntu@xubuntu:~$

:(
from the German Ubuntu wiki (wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB) they recommend to
cp /proc/mounts /etc/mtab
but I have no idea what that does. :/

8:59 PM
I will need to download a 64bit iso somehow

Looks like the best idea.

o/

o/

\o

choose one :D

9:02 PM
KTHXBYE
(exit statement in a certain language)

@penreturn um,
how?

better to have 1 live usb.. just in case...

jrg
you're preaching to the choir with roland. :P

@penreturn why the Windows8 preview? What worst case scenario might that be that you need this one?

:p

9:10 PM
@jrg got that right :)
Boot repair has a grub legacy option :O
I wonder if that would work...

jrg
@Takkat Nothing wrong with checking out the competition.

ahahahhaa... just download for my friend... he's using broadband... might finish up all quota

jrg
@RolandTaylor You're not using grub legacy. probably.

@jrg I'm not, but I wonder if I can install it and then boot, then fix the problem from there
(I hope that's possible)

jrg
@RolandTaylor ohhhh. that probably is.
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Hey, it could be worse - you could have no car at all.

9:12 PM
if u use pc and have separate HD i will suggest you to switch sata cable

he's on a laptop. Switching cables is not an option.

I could check that the drive is in properly, and I keep getting the impulse that it might not be
though why, I don't know.

:(
any change @RolandTaylor ?

@penreturn nope, I'm on a break for now

ohh okey...

Q: Not able to start “Linux from scratch”. How to start

SanI have started learning Linux from scratch to create my own for my requirements. But before i start, I was in a confusion on how to start. I have windows 7 as the actual OS. I have various Linux's like Ubuntu, knoppix, Backtrack in vmware. Now As recommended, we need to create partition for new ...

I need a 64 bit environment for boot repair
will have to reboot
and I'm not going to do that right now

Sound plays through head phones but not speakers http://askubuntu.com/q/197223?atw=1 #sound

@jrg in point of fact i don't have a car. i got a flat tire in someone else's car

jrg
ouch.

ermm cant u just install new ubuntu.. then install back grub to sda... update grub.. after everything fine delete the new ubuntu?

10:00 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing yikes
@penreturn I guess
but I would need the space for it

<-- off to bed cu

cya
d/l a 64 bit iso now

ohh

10:35 PM
bbl
when the iso downloads, I'll use it + boot-repair to repair this issue

gud luck!

1 hour later…
11:44 PM
Darn! The chat room is all but dead.
Haha that seemed plotted

@Mochan I'm here.

im here too

@EliahKagan Yay~ people. I thought I was lonely ^o^

hi
anyone online?

Yup. All three of us

11:46 PM
hey Mochan
a quick question

Hi @Elysium
Sure

I am trying to change an icon
firefox icon...for something custom

OK.

anyway....the issue is that I can log in as root...and copy the icon to the usr/lib/firefox/icons
and it works just fine

Alright.

11:47 PM
but when I log back with my normal user account...the icon is not shown and I cant replace it...since no root access can be given to that folder with my normal account
so.....how can I copy it?
I mean the icon into the folder

Right... so your trying to get the icon replaced for FireFox... but is it the shortcut on the side-bar thing or on the desktop?

shortcut on the quick-start bar
but I want all the icons to be the same
I mean that's the idea
it works perfect on my root account....but I have permission issues on the regular account
so now.....it is a red crossed circle O.o

Right. And you logged into root using Alt+F2 and 'gsku nautilus'?

alt+f2

OK. You could probably ask this as a real question, but I'll check to see if it works for me...

11:51 PM
where do I hit alt+f2?

on your keyboard

I have already asked....no useful answer

Lol haha

nothing happens when I hit alt +f2 on my keyboard :P

(Totally unrelated to the above discussion.) This question is a bug in 12.10, and is thus doubly off-topic here; we should close it as off-topic (the reason you don't see my close vote yet is that I have to wait until the end of the "day" to get more):

Q: how to enable keyboard layout indicator in gnome-shell?

Gal Ben-HaimI upgraded to 12.10 beta 2 and in gnome-shell I don't have the keyboard layout/language indicator in the top panel. I have two layouts enabled and I can switch between them. I used to have it in 12.04 and also its visible before logging in. how do I enable it in gnome-shell ?

11:52 PM
@Elysium Right. If you hit Alt+F2, then the dash should come up saying 'Type command...' or similar. You can type 'gksu nautilus' to log in as root. Did you use that method or something else?

@EliahKagan ... gnome 3.6... only few indicator works ... some goes to 3.5

that is ctrl+L
alt+F2 doesnt work at all

This will allow you root privileges to edit the file-system and not log in totally to root.
Oh really?

I am using 10.04

So pressing alt+f2 does nothing?
...Oh.
Damn. I'm thinking of 12.04.

11:54 PM
@Elysium okey open terminal and type gksu nautilus

Let's see...
@penreturn +1

:p

just did it penreturn
I got an error message

What is the error message?

saying that "no command gsku found"
gksu
one sec
typed it wrong...I guess

11:55 PM
@penreturn could it be sudo gksu nautilus?
Oh?

gksu to open graphical interface with root

@Elysium What is coming up now?

now it works just fine
missed typed it
it lets me copy
do I need a restart for this to work?
I mean the icon

just logout and login back

ok, one sec

11:57 PM
Yeah. We'll be waiting.

n dont forget to share your desktop after finish it ;)

ok, sweet
works just fine
share my desktop?

Yay! Problem solved!
Take a screenshot of it ;)

what does that mean penreturn? O.o
ah...loool, my screenshot is shit

\o/ horeyy!!! Enjoy Ubuntu!

11:58 PM
I can show you guys the icon
it is really cool

-eager-
