Not sure if you saw that.

@TheX do you have invites to give away?

@trampster, actually it's just open
go and sign up

plus.google.com says Google+ is in limited Field Trial..... Leave us your email address and we'll make sure that you're the first to know when we're ready to invite more people.

How should I store a password that is used by a script? http://bit.ly/qyzrhG #security

1:38 AM
@GeorgeEdison I did, looks good

Took a bit of Google-ing to get the right Unix functions to use to communicate over serial.

2:20 AM

@trampster would you like an invite?

Q: Is there any way to 'hook' the messaging menu?

George EdisonI would like to write an application that receives a notification whenever the messaging menu is activated (the blue envelope lights up) and whenever it is deactivated (the blue envelope returns to its default color). Is there any way to get a notification for this? I'm not really concerned abou...

^--- Guess where I'm going with that...

@trampster yes I have invites

Good morning!

6:36 AM
morning

Hi @htorque :)

Recognize new harddisk after hibernate wakeup http://bit.ly/nNNELP #1010

hm, shouldn't this be a bug report? ^^

not sure...

a wishlist bug maybe... i'm not sure that's supposed to work

6:40 AM
This may not be an everyday situation (plug in harddisks and not being able to reboot)

he could plug it in after the boot

I plug in new disks every two years or so...

sata should be hot pluggable

only if BIOS does
(mine does not)

then it's crappy - afaik that's a sata spec :P

6:43 AM
I'd love to get this done - I have my external disk attached via eSATA
and it's definitely not recognized

at least it works here - with my old board i had an sata -> esata adapter and that worked fine with ubuntu
the question is: is it the fault of the bios or the controller

In fact my board is not that bad - should do it! Haven't done much research though
there may be a BIOS option I haven't checked yet...
or I need an update :/
Ha - I have a project for the weekend \o/

:D
oh noes, system disk crossed 10k power-on hours
that's when i replace them
hm, what to buy now... 2tb? 3tb?

good idea to do before it fails.. ;P

they usually all failed after 10k hours here
i use them as additional backup disks until they die.
you can't have enough backups :P

6:50 AM
I wouldn't want to backup a 3TB disk - that takes ages...

true
plus, they aren't that cheap
2tb's the sweet spot with 27.85€/TB
oh, that's 5400rpm
ha, i don't think so

:D

now that i have sata iii ports, i read some reviews: it doesn't matter if your (rotational) hdd is for sata ii or sata iii
about the same speed across all tests
probably not true for ssds, but there's no money for that :D
unbelievable... i remember buying a 160gb disk for over 100€, now you can get 1tb for 40€

Yeah SSD unfortunately are still costly - like HDs those days :)

the small ones are fine imo, but i'd need a larger one to fit ubuntu and windows on it
i need coffee
all those typos
:D

7:05 AM
I so much would like to build me a new system. Unfortunately my old one is still sufficient for my needs. Too bad...
My only reason for a new system is the fans that are getting louder over time. I could just replace them... (but I want a new system!)

that's like buying a new car because your tires are bald
but i fully understand :P

exactly :D

in my case the system was insufficient
i'd never have been able to kill the backlog in time with that old single-core crap :D

I can run Ubuntu and two virtual machines same time on my 2GHz dual core so what do I need more... It would only be for a little bit of more speed (when most of this speed is waisted from things I do afk...)

7:30 AM
morning
last holiday :(

Hi @Rinzwind :)

morning @Rinzwind

:)

so all you did during your days off was killing skeletons?
:-o

he was faced dragons as well :)

7:37 AM
and dragons!

oh, then it's okay :P

my saying...
Better dragons and skeletons than mosquitos and sunburn

and I am going to see Prince later tonight
and on sat-sunday night

2 times?

yeah sold the sun-monday night ticket >:-D

7:44 AM
so I should have asked "two times only" :P

yes you should :+)
oh I also killed 2 wyverns at the same time :=)
bbl gonna kill some Yshrinians >:D

8:03 AM
AWESOME!
I just built a circuit that lights up an LED whenever I have unread emails!
And I can set its brightness based on the number of emails!

How did you do that? Sounds like "want to have" :D

I built it myself with an Arduino and a Python script I made.
@Takkat You might be interested in this.

Is that on USB?
Just saw it - USB \o/ likes electronic devices

That might be a nice project for my son and his dad for summer break!

8:17 AM
It's not that hard :)
All I did was write a Python app that connected to my email's IMAP server and then based on the number of unread emails, writes a number to the serial port the device is connected to. The device of course upon receiving the number sets the LED brightness accordingly.
It was fun!
Night all!

@GeorgeEdison Goodbye!

@RobinHood Where r u?
Central European Summer Time (CEST) is one of the names of the Daylight saving time offset using in the UTC+2 time zone, 2 hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time. It is used as a summer daylight saving time in most European countries. During the winter, Central European Time (UTC+1) is used. @StefanoPalazzo That much?

I might need to install windows just for this game...
@StefanoPalazzo I LOVE super mario brothers...

@Oli in any case, less expensive than a months worth of batteries for the damn thing ;-)

hello evit pheonix

11:56 AM
good morning @The

@TheEvilPhoenix i really like that derezzed remix...

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Considerably less than the power you needed for a Sega Game Gear. That took 6 AAs at once and could be finished with a batch within a few hours.

I know, I had one :D

@YiJiang poooooooooooooooooortal

11:59 AM
I love Conky, but it seems to be unstable, crashing after anywhere from 5 mins to several hours

Oli
@YiJiang Stick its loader in a loop:
while true; do conky; done

I didn't think anybody else bought one @Oli - as far as I remember, it was hideously expensive and there weren't that many games

@Oli Huh, interesting idea

only the cool kids ;)

I got the emulator :D

12:00 PM
it might be this one
WD My Book Essential Edition 3.0 2TB

how much is it @Alvar?

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo Speaking of not many games, I wish I could find my Virtual Boy.

@StefanoPalazzo not much 99 euros

Oli
Mario Tennis 3D FTW

no way

Oli
12:01 PM
And there was a 3D Wario game I had for it

o sry
105,17 euro

that's brilliant :) It must be a real collectors item by now
@Alvar that sounds good, it's 94€ on amazon germany - don't think you will get it for much less than that

Oli
@StefanoPalazzo If it still exists... I've moved house several times and haven't seen it in my travels (although a lot of my stuff is in storage somewhere)

@StefanoPalazzo well 100 euros isn't too much for 2TB and 5gbit/s

Oli
Holy ****. You can get a lot of money for a VB now. £150-400 depending on the condition.

12:05 PM
yeah I though so

Stefano PalazzoSend the SIGQUIT signal with Ctrl+\. .. $ sleep 10 ^\Quit → This is equivalent to kill -3 pid. Programs run in user-space don't ignore sigquit. A: Why is a Virtual Terminal "virtual", and what/why/where is the "real" Terminal?

Stefano Palazzo basically serving the same purpose: ie. A command line environment for various optional command interpreters This isn't strictly true. Virtualy Terminals are merely programs that send keystrokes and recieve output (this is called Standard In, Standard Out[ and Standard Error]) to a proce...

Jorge CastroThere are some events in the Ubuntu Community that I'd love to run as Community Promotion Ads, but unfortunately I don't have the skill to make nice looking ads, so this is a place where people can request ads for that thread and people can make ads.
