1:01 PM
@JorgeCastro great idea - done

<3
@StefanoPalazzo send me a mail and I'll intro you to the team

hey that's fantastic, will do
I'm really looking forward to this ubuntu developer week too
it's got nux, gobject introspection, python pacakging → five days of awesome

Any ideas for a strapline?

what do you mean? for which one?

1:08 PM
so, I haven't thought this through properly yet: @JorgeCastro what are your thoughts on re-laying the #ubuntu-classoom sessions into the SE chat via an IRC bridge?

for AUC

We were also thinking about pushing questions back the the irc discussion channel. it's a bit cumbersome and complicated, but it's a great way to get a big audience

hey, if something is listed /dev/usb/hiddev0 does that mean I have to use that device file for interface? Actually this is a usb programmer kind of thing which works on windows with the device name robokitsusbprog

@StefanoPalazzo how did u make your command working? :O

@Alvar which command?

1:12 PM
@StefanoPalazzo ctrl + alt + print + k

are you on a laptop?

@StefanoPalazzo ctrl + alt + print logged me out
@StefanoPalazzo yes

@Alvar without the K?

@StefanoPalazzo it didnt work

@StefanoPalazzo Is that even possible? If so, that would be great.

1:13 PM
I was logged out any way

@JorgeCastro yeah it should be doable. We have one guy developing flack bot and another guy who spends his time working on IRC bots. I'm estimating it to be pretty straightforward

anyone?

@Alvar it shouldn't do anything by itself, Ctr+Alt+Print that is.
but if you also hit K, naturally killing all of the processes on the current TTY will log you out
or more precisely: kill your session

@StefanoPalazzo no only print made me log out the k did nothing...

is your print-key behind the Fn key or something like that?
my laptop has SysRq bound to Fn+Print
making the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+(Fn + PrintScr) + k
(but just print works too, in my case)

1:18 PM

try it using a TTY by the way, killing gnome isn't a good idea
so, Ctrl+Alt+F4, log in, run "sleep 1000" and then try the shortcuts
mh that keyboard looks totally normal. it should be Ctrl+Alt+Print+K

1:29 PM
@StefanoPalazzo we're still looking for lightning talks for UDW
5 minutes

@JorgeCastro I was just going to ping you about that \o/ - I can't remember the name of the person I talked to last time

my laptop almsot jsut crashed
dont know why, is there a way to find out?
OMG skype used 67.8 % om my REAL ram! :P

@Alvar isn't htop a wonderful tool? :P

@TheEvilPhoenix yes, but skype is scary
I opend skype and chrome at the same time = ram crash

@Alvar exactly why I dont use skype :P
its now a Microsoft product

1:36 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix true

and we all know my opinion on microsoft
do NOT make me rant on it again :P

this is the best I can do it looks like :\

@TheEvilPhoenix you know what I had done if I ahd enough money to buy microsoft?

any good?

OH NICE...
checks the classroom channel calendar on the IRC

1:37 PM
cancel it and sell skype
brb coffeeeeeeeeeeeeee

does anyone want to get the source and maybe work on it? I don't really like it as is

aw DAMN IT
the one session i'd like to be in for the dev week on the irc is smack dab in the middle of a meeting </RAGE!>
"Python packaging with dh7 and dh_python{2,3}" is the session I'd love to attend
stupid meetings >.>
@Stefano going to be around at 20:00-ish GMT so you can attend the session in my stead?
:P

@TheEvilPhoenix very possible

btw this is the calendar for the IRC channel for the classroom: ubuntu-news.org/calendars/classroom
5
yes, i know were things are :P

"introduction to upstart" <3

1:43 PM
what they really need to do is have a session about getting packages into either Debian or REVU
because if your package gets into Debian, then its automagically included in Ubuntu
according to teh MOTUs i've talked to of course

@TheEvilPhoenix as far as I can tell, they've tried that over the years
maybe it just doesn't fit into one session

well why the bloody hell not :P

you'll have to do it yourself ;)

@StefanoPalazzo that ad looks awesome!

it does?
if you say so :-)

1:48 PM
@Stefano I can't even get any INFORMATION from them to teach that session

its like they want me to go away and die
@StefanoPalazzo we need an ad for the Classroom here on AU

we do. I've been trying to come up with something
but all I can think of is a chalkboard and some handwriting. very cheesy

lolololol
go hire a graphics designer then xD
lol i kid
but seriously
:P

lets brainstorm

1:51 PM
cough cheezy cough

its almost as bad as if I were to draw a Microsoft Windows logo and post it in here

ikr :)

although i'd be shot :P
and i still don't have my replacement hard drive...
i HOPE its at my other address...
otherwise i'll have to do a last-minute cancel on the Packaging sessions
postpone them for a week

remember that next week is UDW, so I was thinking they shouldn't be any sessions that week

1:55 PM
oh good my megakey got synced to all the keyservers :P
@StefanoPalazzo i never hold sessions during the actual week :P
there's nothing on the weekends though :P
double checks the calendar

right :D

besides...
during the week... I have work :P
weekends: I do not :p
FOOEY! The Q&A session with someone about Launchpad is today
and i have MEETINGS at that time
note to self: do not bang on the keyboard

pfew
3 supply posts demolished \o/

I didn't read the paper today, is there a civil war in holland, or just general disarray ? :-)

:P
well @StefanoPalazzo if there isnt ANYTHING, you can always cause a problem hides the weapons

1:59 PM
heh

@StefanoPalazzo smart move putting the dates on the ad without a background
we can easily just mod it from now on

totally intentional ;-)

hey, GeorgeEdison had a bit where anyone can run the ads on their own blog or whatever right?

don't know about that
@Jorge do you have his email address?

2:03 PM
declares war on flag-worthy posts

oh of course, you're on google plus

yeah, I can send it to you if you want

I was going to do the same thing ;)

he's usually around here enough where I don't need to mail him

is the google+ hype already over?

2:07 PM
@StefanoPalazzo i think i enjoy flagging misbehaving posts too much... :P

seems media got interested for a couple of days, now i don't hear/read anything about it anymore

yikes. 20 flags
taking a break from work \o/

> Having read many claims that ‘Google+ will kick Facebook’s ass,’ I’ll go out on a limb and predict that Google+ will fail miserably.

I'm on it, it's nice
the killer is the video hangout thing
the rest is basically a cleaner facebook without mafia wars and all that crap

2:13 PM
@Stefano btw, mark this one as invalid: askubuntu.com/questions/52213/…
i flagged that when there wasnt a question :P

@TheEvilPhoenix thanks

but the user then fixed it and put the question in :P
so its actually a question :P

facebook reminds me of windows - it's flawed in many ways, yet people stick to it. :P
diaspora sounded interesting, but imo they did a bad job on promoting it

all done -_-
some really great flags today,
the 10kers invalid votes are especially helpful

2:19 PM
I can't stress that enough - keep 'em coming

@StefanoPalazzo i take it at least my flags were targetted and not considered indiscriminate flagging :P

oh - I see the irony of what I said there :P

i only flag things that I'd hit with a precision guided munition, though, if this were war. :P

some were kind of crap this morning
imo
you can just downvote too
(I dunno who flagged them, I don't mean to sound like your specific flags were crap)

@JorgeCastro i dont downvote unless its absolutely necessary

2:20 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix for me, only about one in twenty flags is invalid; and often for the best of reasons

besides, I like having a flag weight of over 605 :P

I downvote every day!

like these:

Q: How do I symlink certain directories in /home to an SSD?

N.N.In Is a 40GB SSD practical to use for ' / ' Jorge describes how he symlinks things in his /home that would benefit from being on an SSD. How is this done? I've figured that I need to do the following: Create a directory on the SSD to hold what I want to link from /home, e.g. mkdir /var...

FLAG TIME!!!!!!!!!!

you can be forgiven to flag these as duplicates
but they don't seem to be

2:22 PM
OH
well too late :P

believes they're too similar to not flag

one is about "how to symlink" and one is about "what to symlink"

so merge them
they're basically the same

argh I clicked valid by accident

2:23 PM
LOL
My Flag weight: 610.8552
thanks, @Stefano xD

bank error in your favour, collect 0.029211 flag weight

they're not the same
one is what dirs to link

yes we're aware.
he just stated that

the other is how to make the symlink

2:25 PM
(valid as in "flags are valid - no further action needed")

I didn't close or merge

Q: what kind of support or performance can i expect from ubuntu on a chromebook?

browephas anyone installed a ubuntu on a chromebook (acer or samsung ) yet? What has been the experience so far? What kind of hardware support is there? Are you getting expected performance?

something about this strikes me as localized and not really a question...
sounds more like a discussion

I think that depends on the answers in this case
if someone answers "they're exactly the same as any other laptop", it's okay.

so if they answer differently than that

2:29 PM
if people start saying "well first of all you should be using bing, and google steals your data, also the governement.....", I'll close it :)

then its flag-worthy?
ah
okay then
goes back to raining fire and brimstone down upon Windows

there's a general rule that works quite well
flag if you know exactly what should be done with the post

:P
i try and limit flags to obvious ones: low quality, not an answer, not a question, etc.

otherwise, [down-vote and] leave a comment

that way i dont have to justify my flags much :P
perhaps its because i'm in /review too often

2:31 PM
I never know what to do with low quality flags (but that's my fault, no worries)
uhm
@TheEvilPhoenix can you buy chromebooks yet?
never mind, you can

@Stefano any reason why I can't flag a comment with "Other"?

450€ :(
@TheEvilPhoenix what's "other" in your case?

"This post seems to be in concurrence to the OP's question, trying to state they have a similar problem and are trying to get support within this thread by posting their own details. This is not necessarily a good practice, as nobody can read the details they're providing. Its better if this were its own question." regarding second comment on question: askubuntu.com/questions/3222/my-webcam-wont-work-how-do-i-debug

hello

@Stefano the flag system won't let me hit "flag question" when i choose other for the reason (the box pops up for text, i enter text, but it won't send the flag)
@StefanoPalazzo bug, or no?

2:35 PM
Hi @Brandon
@TheEvilPhoenix I don't see that comment

What's new and good

@Stefano that's not the comment :P
sec.
that was the flag reason

oh right

this is the comment: ihave the same trouble with my acer aspire 5571 laptop.... It used to work on cheese and then stopped all of sudden.. Gstreamer properties is also not detecting... I was told it might be a faulty driver. lsusb gives the following Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 ...

too long?

2:36 PM
by sid
@StefanoPalazzo even if i write in one sentence
still wont submit
so...
either my browser is broken
or AU is broken

Don't worry about these kinds of comments

Does anyone know what web server google uses?

the might not be very helpful, but they're not hurting anyone
(by the way)

(which can be rectified with an evilly-written meta post)

I'm not sure why you can't flag it

2:37 PM
@BrandonR their own proprietary software
non-open-source

Did they code it themselves or is it like IIS or apache
oh

35 secs ago, by The Evil Phoenix
@BrandonR their own proprietary software

@Brandon_R if you're looking for a web-server that's extremely scalable, check out nginx

substitute "proprietary" with "coded-for-themselves"
NGINX!

(I'm no administrator, but I've heard very good things about it's robustness under heaver load)

2:39 PM
NGINX PWNS ALL! ALL HAIL NGINX! </crazy>
<--- uses nginx instead of Apache or others, where possible

Yep
scalability is what i'm looking for

but Google uses their own software
and its not openly available
although nginx can sometimes be tricky to configure

@Brandon_R do do know about Ubuntu's "Ensemble"?

Nope but its only a google search away :D

and
5
Q: How do I get started with Ensemble?

Jorge CastroI want to mess with Ubuntu Ensemble, how do I get started?

2:41 PM
Is this cloud thing really worth getting into?

It's Vorsprung durch Technik ;-)

Or should i have my own web server?

@BrandonR depends on what you need, but usually your own webserver works well :P
again, it depends
<--- runs three separate standalone web servers with DNS subdomaining pointing at different boxes depending on what's being requested

If jobs in the future will look at cloud experience i might take the time to get into it and learn and gain experience

i.e. mainframe.domain.com --> box 1
systemoverload.domain.com --> box 2
domain.com --> box 3
and my favorite:
admin.domain.dom --> /dev/null xD

2:43 PM
:D

@Brandon_R I don't really know what Cloud means... I have (access to) an Amazon EC2 instance and a normal, traditional VPS. And they seem exactly the same to me
except that it's much easier and quicker to get a hold of an AWS instance

(still angry about the paperwork)

throws more paperwork at @Stefano

nooooo

2:45 PM
which, strangely enough, is not as evil as me throwing government illogic at people

does any one have a usb mono headset working???(sorry for being irrelevant )

wth is a USB mono headset

As you work for the government, I'd rather you throw Illogic at me, than paperwork. I can only imagine the horror...

a headset lol

throws the paperwork that documents the government illogic as well as the government illogic at @Stefano

2:46 PM
probably a headset with a combined jack

there, THAT'S evil xD

because its double-barreled government illogic
:P
@KevinMaghuyop i've got a Plantronics USB headset, works ootb on Ubuntu 10.10, 11.04, and 10.04

@KevinMaghuyop They should work without you having to do anything

2:47 PM
s/ootb/out of the box/

holy cow - is it only nine minutes left?
oh 28 minutes until launch

lolwut?
did your brain implode there for a second, @Stefano?
;P

sry?
did I get it wrong?

twelve days in that thing? eeew

there
the clock says -9:00:00

2:50 PM
isnt that nine hours?

I've no idea - obviously :P

-00:09:00 would be 9 minutes :P

t-26
:P

No I think I'm right, it's in 26 minutes

of course, i'm being an evil person today so :P

2:51 PM
:)
how exciting is this

not at all :P

it's not like the first moon landing :P

you're weird
it's freakin' space

:)
it's friggin empty space

2:53 PM
@StefanoPalazzo its not like we're testing an FTL drive here...
so itsboring

you americans are pretty damn great
saving the world and then walking on the moon to celebrate it, that trumps a messed up healthcare system in my book

who says i care about the obamacare plan? its crap
imo, no government is better than obama government :P

damn now you've got me stuck on politics

only needs 2 more upvotes!

2:59 PM
what are they waiting for? every crew member to pee? :P
only one more to go ;)
