Q: How do I open a .bak file on Linux?

Mikko SetäläI have received a file of .bak format, let it be foo.bak. I don't know if it is a MS-DOS file or Linux/Unix file. What I know is that I can't open it because my Linux (Ubuntu) does not give any hint how to open it. So, how I open this file? Just to omit warnings about not knowing what I am doin...

isnt .bak a backup file or something?

lol
Well then let me use screenshots :P
see why I am disappoint :(
for clarity:

@RolandTaylor Mark's right, he stated his position on the situation. Just because it's not what you want to hear doesn't mean they're ignoring you.

2:37 PM
I don't think you're understanding the situation with this bug.

I understand, and I agree

I made it clear, I appreciate that "I've stated my position", but if you read through the rest of it, and consider everything fairly, we are being ignored :(
I mean, someone even too the time to write a patch, and it was rejected without even an explanation.
That's poor...

If there is a high enough demand someone will patch and create a PPA for it or an alternate installation

The huge issue here isn't "we don't get what we want", but rather the way (method) with which we are being "disallowed".
He did that, but it is only fair that he should not have to keep updating against unity for such a simple feature. It is just an option (and he provided the code for that in his patch, so no big effort needed on their part).

Yet, they couldn't even find the common courtesy to give us a clear explanation as to why they continue to reject the idea/effort/uproar.
That's disappointing to me.

put it in a ppa?

2:43 PM
@JorgeCastro +1

@JorgeCastro that was done but to my knowledge the person did not maintain it

right, so nobody cares enough to maintain it

supply and demand

(was reading through - just thought I'd share that comment for laughs)
The guy was willing to maintain it (AFAIRemember) but he got frustrated with the rhetoric like the rest of us...

2:50 PM
wait
you're the one spouting all the rhetoric

Last wall of text!
then I shut up
/fight off
shake hands?
@TheEvilPhoenix btw I didn't find that all too funny :)

throws fire at @RolandTaylor

<----- ._.

2:52 PM
@RolandTaylor the lol was at @Jorge's comment

I know it was :P

that last wall of text is basically saying "I am going to treat this bug report as a forum now and make it all opinion."
at which point most people will just unsubscribe to the bug

LAGGGGGGGGG

because there's nothing useful but people arguing over the internet

Arguing on the internet only leads to Godwin's law
Godwin's law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies or Godwin's Law of Nazi Analogies) is a humorous observation made by Mike Godwin in 1990 In other words, Godwin put forth the hyperbolic observation that, given enough time, in any online discussion—regardless of topic or scope—someone inevitably criticizes some point made in the discussion by comparing it to beliefs held by Hitler and the Nazis. Godwin's law is often cited in online discussions as a deterrent against the use of arguments in the widespread Reductio ad Hitlerum form. The rule does not make any statemen...

2:54 PM
heh

I'm not going to discuss this bug any further...
Sorry for bringing it up :/

you don't need to apologize

it makes me feel better :S

I'm just saying, you're mad because he's ignoring your comments

Well, that's not what I'm actually mad about

2:56 PM
but if you read the comments on that bug why would anyone want to respond to that level of crap?

uh...
not sure the people who commented would consider what they said as crap...
but fair enough
if you see it that way...

"you guys"

so... can I throw fire at @Alvar now for not sending me a chess move in 3 days? :P

Q: What is the purpose of two topics in one tag: windows

The Evil Phoenixhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/tagged/windows That is the link to the "windows" tag. I am curious. Why does it cover both the Windows OS as well as application windows? shouldn't those be two separate tags, i.e. windows-os and application-windows or something?

how do i make a tag show up in a page without tagging a page with that tag?
i'm not sure of the markup

whats the actual markup ?

3:11 PM
The windows tag shouldn't even cover microsoft products to be honest

Any question about MS products should be corralled and burned :)
(jk)

@MarcoCeppi indeed, so could we perhaps discuss that in the meta?
and can you perhaps edit my post (or give me the raw markup) to make the windows tag appear in the quesetion rather than a link to questions tagged by it?

possibly, but it might already be covered
[tag:windows]

Q: What is the proper usage of the windows tag?

moberleyI noticed this question today. The question is apparently about workspaces, but is a bit unclear on that. In any case, it used the "windows" tag with a different meaning than the other questions using that tag. All the other questions so tagged refer to the operating system but the question in ...

@MarcoCeppi perhaps my evil is a result of caffeine dependence? :/

I don't drink coffee and I'm random and crazy...

@Takkat The printer is either out of toner or there is no paper only when the client asks for 10 copies of a 120 page report by evening.
Curious Where do you work??

@StefanoPalazzo: You there?
P.S. Finally a dedicated 'invite' button on Google+.

@GeorgeEdison yep :-)
'ello :)

I CLAIM THAT WINDOWS USERS SHALL EXPLODE!
</rage>
anyways, sup

@StefanoPalazzo I added line numbers.
...and I have a question for you.

@GeorgeEdison yeah I saw that

What is your opinion on instant-apply settings?

4:56 PM
if you add the right margin and let me choose n spaces for tabs, I can pretty much start using js studio for my daily graft already \o/

@StefanoPalazzo Hang on... my question :)

@GeorgeEdison explain :)

Okay...
Instant-apply settings take affect as soon as you change them... instead of after clicking 'OK' in the settings dialog.

(I looked that up in a dictionary, is it something that people say, "daily graft"?)

(Not really... I've never heard it.)

4:58 PM
@GeorgeEdison a definite +1 from me, that's what I expect apps to do these days

So you're okay with that?

it's not like I'm calibrating a printing press, the step of clicking "OK" is just not necessary

Well... it was more because then there's no way to cancel.
...but if you're okay with it...

replace "OK" and "Cancel" with one button that says "Close"

:D
@GeorgeEdison what happened to flack?

5:00 PM
@GeorgeEdison yeah, but if the settings are clear enough and well laid-out, you won't ever have the problem of "not remembering what you've just messed up" - that's the ticket. I think it's a great idea
I think it might even be part of the gnome usability guidelines, which I should really know better :\

allo all

@StefanoPalazzo Thanks.

@GeorgeEdison something I meant to mention

Hi @GeorgeEdison and @StefanoPalazzo

this is what I've come to expect, your dialogue is confusing me slightly
@zkriesse hey :-)

5:03 PM
How goes it

note the "7 minutes" thing. It seems small, but it's a big help (i.e. alarm bells go off when I see "3 hours" or something), I can't remember ever making a mistake closing a document in gedit
imo, it's the very best way to lay out this dialogue, you might want to think about stealing this particular idea

@StefanoPalazzo +1 Life-saving feature

And this is why my rage must be controlled by coffee:

BBT good night

otherwise THAT happens

5:07 PM
Same here

@GeorgeEdison oh nice, the asterisk works
"surprise & delight" :-)

ok, while i DONT promote gates.. this is amusing

heh
although that statement is becoming less true
Gates has been donating his wealth :/
having said that, my previously-posted image is still 100% correct
deny me my coffee, and that happens

I think bill gates is probably one of the great people living today. Anybody with me?

@Stefano... there are times where I think your sanity comes into question...

5:17 PM
heh

I think the action of him donating his money is great, but as a great person? no. the single act of writing the home brew club accusing htem of theft was enough to make me despise him.

someone seriously screwed up:

Q: Recover deleted data with rm -rf ?

ShogunI accidentally deleted /home directory with sudo rm -rf... :( I tried to restore it with testdisk, but becouse Ubuntu is from Wubi, it cannot list filesystem and dont know another way to do this. How could i restore my data? It's important. Please help. Wubi, Ubuntu 10.10

@lazyPower I can agree with that. but It's not what comes to my mind when I think "gates".

please do explain

@StefanoPalazzo did I mention there are times I'd like to throw flaming government illogic at you?
throws flaming piles of government illogic at @Stefano

5:20 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix its all fun and games until someone looses an eye

In my mind, he's a pure bread money-maker and a philanthropist. never mind windows, he's just an awesome (in the real sense of the word) business-man

@StefanoPalazzo but his company (while maybe not limited to him...but was spear headed) has used questionable business practices since its founding. I mean, you present a decent statement, but i question the values you hold for "awesome business man" if that is a model of it.

the fact that he's an idiot with ridiculous opinions on things like patents and copyright seems somehow less important to me
2

haha

@lazyPower would YOU like to be the target of the fiery piles of government illogic?

5:23 PM
@TheEvilPhoenix just keep em away from the money maker and you can throw flaming piles of whatever the heck you want.

@lazyPower yeah I absolutely agree with that. I just admire his ability to make money, it's astonishing.
we're all capitalists here, right :-)

hwh
heh*
i'm more anarchist than capitalist, but... shrugs

I woudl like to be one, as being a capitalist generally denotes having wealth... i, however, do not have wealth.

oops i didnt notice the time...
my lunch is over in 2 minutes!
/off

anarchist!

@StefanoPalazzo EVIL MINION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY, BE GONE! explodes @StefanoPalazzo
okay now i seriously must go

good day, people!

Good day @htorque

see you and hello :-)

@TheEvilPhoenix you do realize you're borderline of comitting Godwins law

@lazyPower It's only a matter of time

lol

@StefanoPalazzo Oh, the asterisk is working, yay!
Actually, there is still a corner case or so that doesn't work.
Still needs a bit of adjustment.

grabs a stick of cheese

5:33 PM
I also added the ability to open multiple files in the Open File dialog.
(But that hasn't made it into the daily build yet.)

@GeorgeEdison daily build for what?

@GeorgeEdison I forgot to mention, apart from the right margin and spaces/tabs, I also need the ability to indent and dedent highlighted lines before I can use it everyday
but as soon as those three are there, I shall

@zkriesse JS Studio.

Oooh cool what's that?

@StefanoPalazzo Right, well I'm hoping I can have all that by the end of the week.
@zkriesse My latest project - a JavaScript development environment.
