API generally means an interface to some running piece of software, for example, you can upload images to imgur.com by opening some url with the image as POST data, and it returns the URL of the image (this is known as a remote procedure call)

this is an example call of the stack exchange api: api.askubuntu.com/1.0/stats

personally, I can't stand it. They made some awful design decisions, and their sites aren't very good as a result. but that's just me being grumpy as always

in my humble opinion, the stack exchange sites run so well because the guys at SE made some tough decisions. For example: you can't follow people, you can't directly message people, all that kind of thing

now, the guys at shapado do weird things like putting country flags on users (what the hell does it matter where a user is from?)

Well, clearly I'm not the right person to ask with all my subjective opinions. But I think, it doesn't matter how good the software is, if you don't have the right people to build a successful community

I have yet to see a successful SE competitor, there must be a reason for that

for instance, the reason could be that making a Q&A site is really, really hard

@Achu that might be true for some kinds of communities, but, if you compare the various ubuntu forums with AU, it doesn't seem to be the case
