the server isn't in my closet, it's colocated but I'm finding it hard to see the downside of using google apps

Good morning all

Morning
Anyone can help me to install Ubuntu by Virtual Box in Mac OSX
I have downloaded .iso file of Ubuntu and having Virtual Box running,I am facing an error

no Mac here but it should not be much different, what's the error?

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

How did you install? Did you reboot your Mac?

Yes,I have reboot it
I'm not able to choose .iso file :(

6:20 AM
VBox needs a kernel drive on the Mac to run a virtual machine
This driver should have been installed together with VBox...

But I did it last,It doesn't require any kernel derive :(

You don't see it installing, you only get an error if sth went wrong
Sometimes it may help to just try a reinstall of VBox...

I did

hmm... did you download the installer from the official site?

Yes

6:24 AM
is there anything like /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup in OSX?

Wait,I'm reinstalling Virtual Box

^^that would be the step to perform on a Linux host...

I reinstalled Virtual Box,Now again Ubuntu
Successful

fingers crossed

Ubuntu running

6:27 AM
\o/

Ubuntu 11.04

now install Guest Additions...

What is this now

makes you all the fancy stuff like scalable windows and mouse integration an USB2.0

I am not good in Ubuntu

6:28 AM
wait a second

Where would I get Guest Additions

9
A: How do I install Guest Additions in Virtual Box?

TakkatInstalling Guest Additions from the GUI After selecting Devices -> Install Guest Additions or by pressing Host+D from the Virtual Box Manager the Guest Additions CD .iso will be loaded but not installed in your guest OS. To install the Guest Additions we will have a CD icon on our desktop as s...

That was for 10.10 but is same for 11.04

Ok,I am reading, btw where would I get CD?

That is an iso file that came with your vbox installer

No,I don't have any other file with me

6:31 AM
In VBox Manager go to Devices
select Install Guest Additions
That will mount a virtual CD on your guest

In Ubuntu or Virtual Box?

Mounting is in Ubuntu
Selecting is in the VBox GUI on Mac

I am not finding for device

/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ http://bit.ly/oETerW #filesystem

Charlie,please wait

6:35 AM
> On Mac OS X hosts, you can find this file in the application bundle of VirtualBox. (Right click on the VirtualBox icon in Finder and choose Show Package Contents. There it is located in the Contents/MacOS folder.)
But you should be able to select this from menu...

I got Show Package Contents

is there: VBoxGuestAdditions.iso?

Yes,I got it now what next?

Go to the VBox Manager on your Mac OSX
Do you have a dropdown menu Devices?

No
In File>>>>>>Virtual Media Manager,Import Appliances.Export Appliances
In Machine>>>>New, Add,

6:41 AM
is Ubuntu runnign atm?

Ok select it (not run it!) and go to Storage

Where are you talking about?
Should I stop running Ubuntu?
I clicked on VBoxGuestAdditions.iso,It is asking for installation,Should I install it?
Couldn't open "VBoxSolarisAdditions.pkg".

In Ubuntu? Then YES
you have no Solaris :/

In Mac OSX only
The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.)

6:46 AM
no it needs mounting in Ubuntu

wait let me do it in Ubuntu then

You need to tell VBox Manager first where that .iso is...

Yes,I think same

There should be a devices dialogue somewhere
in the MacOSX GUI of VBox...

No,There is no Device in menu of VBox

6:48 AM
hmm (I can't give you a shot from OSX here)
Then better shutdown Ubuntu
Ah - wait!

But,I dont have path for VBoxGuestAdditions.iso

Ubuntu is running in live mode?

I reached there by right click on VBox
Yes,it is running

live mode or full installation?

means,It is running on VBox only

6:52 AM
You selected "try out", true?

Yes,Try Ubuntu

Ok
If you like to try out Unity you will have to perform an installation (20 min) and only then
you will be able to install guest additions for 3D-support
and Unity
3D support is not provided for the live system.
Unity-2D fallback is from 11.10 only

How?
Should I install it

"Install Ubuntu" somewhere on your Ubuntu Desktop

On mac
or in Ubuntu?

6:56 AM
Ubuntu

I am installing Ubunut 11.04 in Ubuntu desktop

It will ask you few things then...

Installing very slow and hanging :(

It copies a lot. Takes 20 min. in all

Almost finished
lol it shows 30 sec

7:00 AM
can't be :P unless you're on a SSD

what is that SSD?

solid state disk - all chips

Oh!Does it affects
Done,Restarting now

Remove the Ubuntu iso first!

7:38 AM
LOL
Just came in at work and was told I am to stop doing helpdesk and will be put on to coding :)

ssh Hi @Rinzwind

gheya

coding is much much better than helpdesk \o/

naaa helpdesk is more chat time ;-)

so it's bad news for us :'(

7:54 AM
well... I can tell you something >:-D

Ears wide open

when someone here says something takes 20 hours to code I tend to finish the job and have added some extras they did not think about in 10 hours >:D

I believe that :)
That makes the difference...

and that's all due to me knowing what program to COPY from to be quicker than they expect ;)
I normally do not start from scratch (like most do here)

Makes no sense to invent the wheel
It's much fun to look through other ppl's code anyway
(and if it's only for the comments)
Behind every single silly piece of software there is a coder who deliberately made it the way it is.

8:03 AM
no it is not \o/
Most of those snippets have been made by idiots

Best software is created by coders who are able to listen to people's needs

9 out of 10 times I re-code those snippets and my collegua's are left once again flabbergasted at how easy things can be >:D

:D

I once saw a piece of code where someone coded an if else and kept on using else when there was need for a new branch

I just imagine how an idiot would deliberately create things...

8:05 AM
so I recoded it to a SQL fetch and created a table; told someone to make a screen for it and said: ok if you put this here and here in this screen it works
even a n00b could work with that :=)
the program got cut back to less than half it size (the if else spanned over 3 A4 pages :X )

... like that BIOS error: no keyboard found. Press any key to continue.
omg: 3 A4 pages if else... too bad.

8:25 AM
well he did use a new line for every else and added comments for every else ;-)

in this case it's not too bad ;P

@Takkat that means you need to insert a kboard and then press a key :=)

With my crappy BIOS/Mobo the error appeared despite a plugged in keyboard - even replugging did not help...
But that's history

8:52 AM
Morning

Morning @Achu

@Takkat o/

Hey Achu

9:09 AM

Q: How do I access a digital camera drive via usb after safely removing it?

ArvanemIn Ubuntu 11.04, I unwisely right clicked and "safely unmounted the drive" of my Sony HDR-XR150 connected via USB. @MarcoCeppi you're always here... except when you arent
:P

Even when I'm not, I'm still here :)

heh
well i haves a question for ya @Marco
what's with the abundance of new rooms in the AU chat
and why's the classroom frozen
(although i know the answer to that one, i'm curious as to why its still frozen)

I don't know, I've unfrozen it

1:27 PM
to prevent Fungus

As for the abundance of new rooms I didn't create them - you'll have to ask on who ever went on a room creation binge why

well the better question is\
are they actually necessary?
some look like they could be frozen due to irrelevancy imo

@TheEvilPhoenix Are they ever?

:P
@MarcoCeppi this room, the classroom, yes

1:28 PM
BURN THE ANDROID USER! Just because I woke up extra evil today
:P

Is that better?

Q: List of custom Launchers & Quicklists for Unity

Yes, because there is no other easy way to derive that source of information in the wild

@MarcoCeppi also, mod attention flag for something that should probably be migrated

So it's a "grudgingly acceptable poll" for now

heh
so i dont need to flag that one

1:43 PM
No, we're well aware of it's existence :)

and now a not a question flag :P
that's what 4 flags in about an hour?
:P

Compared to the 30+ this morning. 4 is nothing

oxwivi should have know better than posting something like this: askubuntu.com/questions/52668/small-non-native-firefox-icons

yes, well being at work severely limits my flagging ability
@Rinzwind that's what i flagged :P

1:45 PM
@Rinzwind What's wrong with that question?

me too \o

I'm curious why it was flagged by you two

WHAT question?
it's a comment

Q: Small non-native Firefox icons

OxwiviI want to use Firefox with it's default button set as shown below. Source Firefox/4.0 Linux Theme Mockups

@MarcoCeppi its ambiguous, and isnt really ASKING anything

1:46 PM
it's a comment to me ;)

and either needs some reformatting or closure as not a question, in my opinion

my answer could be "Ok" and be valid ;-)

Sure there is no direct question, but it's obvious that he wants to use the theme outlined in the Mozilla wiki for Linux Firefox

that's an assumption Marco...

I don't have firefox installed, but I assume it doesn't look like that
Well, it's a Q&A site, so assuming he's asking a question isn't tooo much of a stretch :)

1:47 PM
well ok you are probably correct but an assumption nevertheless ;)

its better if the question is actually clearly stated
such as "How do I go about getting this theme?"

A better course of action, IMO, would be to edit or comment asking for clarification

I agree! \o/

because the question isnt clearly stated is why i flagged
mainly because i dont have time to edit/comment

but if Marco puts his finger down I'll stop argueing about it ;)

1:48 PM
and because of my being late i missed the meeting </rage>

Nono, just curious about the decision making behind that one

ok :D
go to your meeting ;-) @TheEvilPhoenix
I hate meetings so they know I might never show up :X

@TheEvilPhoenix Same with this question:

Q: How to Enable mod rewrite in lamp

vinothNow I just installed the lamp in my ubuntu. But the redirection not working for me. I don't know hot to fix it. Can anyone help me

It's about mod_rewrite on Ubuntu, on-topic from what I can tell
Not to mention it has a very well (and correctly) written answer

border case >:-D but besides it being short I see no problem. But it does miss a ? at the end ;-)

@MarcoCeppi make a note: when i wake up evil and have had the equiv. of 6 cups of coffee's worth of caffeine in a 2 hour period of time...
my flagging is a bit... erratic... sometimes ;)
feel free to mark as invalid if you wish

1:52 PM
ohhhh caving in @TheEvilPhoenix ?

Unfortunately due to the nature of our site we're going to have overlap with server fault, Super User, StackOverflow, and Unix&Linux. So when looking at migration candidates think of this "Is this about Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Family, the Ubuntu Community, or supported derivatives?" If yes, it's good unless it's: Duplicated, not constructive, or not a real question

how do you get those percentages?
I WANT TO SEE NUMBERS!

I made them up™

ah
well then that argument is statistically invalid
so THERE!

But I am the all-mighty™

1:55 PM
still invalid
or do i need to pull a statistician into here?

overlap is not an issue since not everyone on AU will visit the other stacks. I remain 99.9999% on AU for instance. I mostly end up on the other sites when searching :D :D

@TheEvilPhoenix Statistically invalid, but now there are no statistics :)™

@MarcoCeppi lies.

So just remember: UFCD?||D!(CQ)
Something like that
