@OctavianDamiean I wouldn't have a big beef though if it were a public room, we could start a new trend :)
@StefanoPalazzo hmm I'll bring that up in the next LoCo meeting on Saturday, I'd love to have them here instead of IRC
@OctavianDamiean once they find out how great this chat is, I'm sure they will want to be here as well :)
If I here ONE MORE mention of "Ubuntu Linux", I'm going to flip out. :P
/end rant.
@StefanoPalazzo I have to prepare an information slide or something like that
you know about our chat FAQ?
16:02
well maybe I should just get them to join a separate room and show them live :D
@JamesGifford why?
@Alaukik It's "Ubuntu". It's based on Linux, but it isn't "Ubuntu Linux" - it's "Ubuntu". drops the subject
@JamesGifford Hello...
@JamesGifford Actually it is based on GNU/Linux .
@JamesGifford maybe you should write a blog about the naming convention of Ubuntu?
@Alaukik really?? did you have to say that??
16:06
@TheX OH hey. And I love that idea. :)
@Alaukik drops the subject
DOOOD the Ubuntu Hoodies arrived!!
Man, these tweets that mention "Ubuntu" are coming in FAST.
<----- wants a hoodie
this is a really cool game
16:07
i'm using 'ubuntu linux' and nothing's going to stop me :P
@htorque lol. :P
@OctavianDamiean pics or it didn't happen
@htorque you can call it whatever you want... but realize that "Ubuntu Linux" is a different distro then the rest of us use...
how many USD make up a Brittish lb?
16:09
@JamesGifford ubuntu-linux.com
:D
@TheX just use the currency switcher at the bottom of the page ;)
@OctavianDamiean Sweet. Glad someone grabbed it. :)
oh my god ... 114€ already and that is without shipping costs
Chromium is pretty stupid sometimes
16:13
@OctavianDamiean I have never noticed the price switcher :D
"would you like to have this dictionary website translated?"
wow, 50USD for that hoodie...
ordered Ubuntu stuff in the value of 165.63€
@StefanoPalazzo reasonable question :D
I can't afford that.. I can hardly afford to buy Ubuntu as it is....
16:15
the ubuntu website is pretty nice, eh?
up there with the best of 'em, if you ask me
are they sure it's about the cloud?
:D
looks like cotton balls
@htorque :D I was thinking the same :p
right after the UDS I'll have to save money again
being a fan of something is so darn expensive ...
thank god I'm not a fan of Apple :D
@OctavianDamiean but Apple gives you free stickers when you buy their crap
16:19
@TheX that is ... well I'm speechless
lol
there's a script that modifies the se chat's favicon to show new messages and replies, but I can't find it
does anybody have a link?
@TheX You also don't get Apple products for free. Free OS > 1900 hardware + free sticker
has to block the Ubuntu shop
@MarcoCeppi yeah but if you buy a Apple product you get a Free OS + Free sticker....
16:26
The OS is hardly free - it's merely bundled with the Hardware - if you want to upgrade to the next OSX it isn't a download :)
↑ install this, it rocks :)
@MarcoCeppi right I meant bundled != free
@StefanoPalazzo ping me pls :)
@OctavianDamiean never!
@StefanoPalazzo AWESOME :D
16:32
I've told the contact form to "cc myself", but I don't get any email
how I loathe these contact forms :(
As if you really need to care about spam these days. And if you do, you're not using the right software.
whinges again
alooo
Is there a way to keep the app menu visible all the time?
:(
neither to remove the window controls from unity panel, no?
@tutuca by "app menu", you mean the launcher?
16:42
@JamesGifford, I mean the unity's appmenu
@tutuca Not sure what you mean by that.... can you show me a screenshot?
the menu in the top bar
@JamesGifford it's evident if you are running unity, when you focus a window the top bar shows it's title
@tutuca OH. sorry, mis-understood. no way to change that so it always shows. sorry.
if you hover the mouse over it, it changes to display application menu
that's what i thought
it's a little annoying, but I guess I can live with that
another one in that line: the dock (I don't know how it's called) jumps in whenever I push crtl, alt, or shift key in the desktop or any unmaximized window, it's the intended behaviour?
16:46
not that I know of O.o
are you issuing a shortcut?
I hope not, it happens with any of those keys
if I want to copy a file, it jumps in when pressing ctrl
0
Q: How can I put the Launcher on the other display?

Stefano PalazzoWhen I plug an external monitor into my laptop, the laptop screen is still considered my primary display. Since my laptop is on the right of my external monitor, I now have the Launcher sort of "in the middle". How do I get the launcher onto my external monitor?

sponsored message (:
I'm so upvoting that
Does somebody here uses the unrar app from the terminal?
16:49
@StefanoPalazzo oh thats damn easy actually!
@Trufa lol?
@OctavianDamiean is it? nice :)
move the laptop to the left of the external monitor :D
@MarcoCeppi still getting Uncaught TypeError: Object #<HTMLEmbedElement> has no method 'notify'
16:50
LOL
there's another laptop to the left of the screen, and stringing cables is kind of tricky
@RolandTaylor wasn't trying to joke :)
nothing easier than that :p
@Greg yeah, I haven't made an update yet - it's going to be this weekend before I have time to finish it
I'm failing to get it, wait id doensnt have a GUI ?
16:50
@Trufa well - most of us would use file roller :)... what's the issue you're having?
I'm on my "desk of many screens"
@MarcoCeppi will it update itself?
@Greg Yes
wait id? O.o (sorry I don't understand :S)
cool ok I'll look forward to it
16:51
@RolandTaylor I can't figure out how to unrar to a (yet unexisting folder) folder
I am doing unrar e file.rar
but this just unrars the file there (that is what it is supposed to do)
But I want it to create a folder and extract there
I don't mind changing to another app
I'm not used to this was at all
Why not use Fileroller?
@RolandTaylor because I just found out about it, but why not!
I'll give it a try
@Trufa I'm not familiar with unrar, but you could "mkdir bla/ && unrar e file.rar bla/" or something like that?
I suppose
@Trufa tried the x option yet?
it it doesn't help just do what @StefanoPalazzo just said
@StefanoPalazzo yes I could, but I guess that could be built in
16:56
Is there a way I can generate an SSH key based on a login password?
I was gonna suggest that, but if you have the GUI option, I suggest you make use of it :)
@user257493 I don't understand
I have to log in using paSSw0rd. I want to use a key.
And I don't have access to make any changes to the remote system
@user257493 that is a problem then
@Trufa Normally, apps don't create directories, that's a sort of tradition in the unix world
16:58
not be difficult by why paSSw0rd?
@RolandTaylor that was an example.
@StefanoPalazzo bad tradition? :)
This manual page documents briefly the rar archiver. This manual page was written for the Debian GNU/Linux distribution because the original program does not have a manual page. Commands and options described here are as of rar 3.0b5. rar and unrar are programs for manipulation with .rar archives.
the x option
@user257493 kk
@Trufa good tradition
Hah, I'm losing my mind here. I need to SSH directly into the SFTP subsystem to automate an upload, I can't run any SSH commands or it kicks me out. Also, I can't script to authenticate using any command line stuff without a key.
I've posted a question about it... askubuntu.com/questions/37604/…
17:00
@RolandTaylor may I ask why?
@user257493 without access to the remote machine I highly doubt it is going to be possible
Any thoughts on scripting for commands that go out of their way to not allow me to use a password in a script?
@Trufa if applications are restricted to working with what they have, the system is more secure, and there is less of a likelihood that an application can create a hidden folder that then cannot be tracked later by the system as a whole (it would quickly get technical to discuss this lol)
@Trufa the idea is that tools are supposed to do as little as possible, so that you always understand exactly what they're going to do. Take "dc" for example, it reads from stdin and prints to stdout, so that you can do something like this: "echo '2 2+p' | dc"
or even "ping -c $(echo '2 2+p' | dc) $(cat ips.text | grep ^192)"
17:04
if apps were "too smart", they would make it difficult to do something like this
echo '2 2+p' | dc is pretty bad ass, didn't know bout that
<3 dc (but still wrote a replacement for it :P)
> It is one of the oldest Unix utilities, predating even the invention of the C programming language
Natty isn't stable for me anymore... ironic.
(Just had X crash)
i had some x freezes, not sure what caused them :-(
I'm thinking it's that kernel bug.. let me find it.
Was something like "Every 47.7 hours, X restarts randomly"
17:18
i see no restart, though. 5/6 of the dev cycle went fine, now every now and then X freezes - i still can access the virtual terminals: nothing to find in dmesg/xsession-errors/Xorg.0.log. it's also no unity/compiz issue. maybe bad karma :D
odd.
sdkhf. i can't find that changlog.
odd is great :D
odd means "challenge"
@JamesGifford that was an nvidia bug
and that particular bug was fixed like a few weeks ago
Odd. Guess I'm just behind the times. Not the first time something like that's happened :)
well your crash could be something else
17:23
it only ever happens when i've got pidgin, chrom(ium)e and gnome-terminal up.
If i'm using terminator (which is most of the time), it doesn't happen.
solution, at least temporarily: Don't use gnome-terminal. (:
@JamesGifford did you ever fix your quick list?
@TheX No. There a LOT of things that I was doing wrong (Found out last night). If I install them in /usr/share/applications, they get overwritten when the next update comes out. However, if you install them in .local/share/applications, then you don't run the risk of losing them/borking them when the package updates.
You're ok though.
@JamesGifford I see
@TheX When the package updates, the ones that you installed from the .deb will just get overwritten. :)
@JamesGifford is you say soo...
17:37
@TheX Hey, if anything goes wrong, I'll know about it first. I'm not disabling my cronjobs that update for me yet. :)
Oh my. "Ubuntu" on Twitter is threatening to explode my client . . . . .
@JamesGifford KILL TWITTER!!!
@TheX ahahhaa... no.
:P
@JamesGifford I have tried learning how to use twitter...
but it breaks my cognitive thinking every time i try... I just don't get it
@TheX I'm just using it to try and help people with adjusting to Unity. :)
17:53
@MarcoCeppi I just pushed an update that integrates the search server on AWS
thanks a lot again, totally awesome of you to host the thing - let me know about traffic when it's public in a few days
as soon as @George is around, I'm gonna integrate his server as well, then we'll have two layers of no-cache query acceleration \o/
@JamesGifford your a brave man
I think he might be in Belgium
Interesting... a increasing amount of tweets about "ubuntu" are coming from iPhones/iPads... Must mean it's attracted a lot of Windows users.
@TheX Thanks, I guess.
lol
@JamesGifford how do you figure iphone/ipad users are also windows users?
@TheX Shot in the dark. However, Unity does lower the level of "geekiness" or "nerdyness" needed to use Ubuntu.
It was easy before, now it's as easy as falling off a log. :)
18:02
@JamesGifford only if you are standing on a log...
@TheX haha. you get my point though.
@JamesGifford can you come to the room I created, I want to ask you some stuff about twitter, but I don't want to fill this room with nonsense
but if you are busy, that is fine to
@TheX I'm in there. :)
anyone here use github?
Now that 11.04 is out will 10.04 still upgrade to 10.10? http://bit.ly/kULLj1 #1010
18:14
@Greg Yup.
@JamesGifford I'm just setting up, but the initial ssh test isn't doing much for me
"ssh [email protected]" responds with:
PTY allocation request failed on channel 0
It worked.
I get that all the time. It's a bug with openSSH.
really? On Windows I always used to get "Hi [email protected], successfull authentication blah blah blah"
...a message saying it worked, but ssh is disabled by default.
yeah.
it's a bug in the way it's packaged.
The word "failed" made me think it wasn't working, how do I make sure it actually is working?
18:19
try a git push.
hmm yeah its working fine
stupid error message
drove me nuts for a few days.
then i decided to actually give it a go.
It it's a new repository you'll need to git push origin master if you've setup the origin remote to push to Github
@MarcoCeppi and @JamesGifford I know its a change of topic, but I finally decided to give Twitter a go, so I'm following you two now :)
@Greg Oh sweet. I'll add you to the "Askubuntu users" list. :)
18:24
ah I didn't know you could list things
it's a cool feature. very useful. :)
I kinda like the idea of using Twitter to find useful reading rather than as a self-promotion tool
Yup. That's what I use it for a lot.
but then there's nothing to stop a plug when a cool project is finished?
nope. ;)
DoR
DoR
18:30
How does one restart the Unity panel?
alt + f2
then type unity --replace
@JamesGifford got any interesting suggestions to follow?
DoR
DoR
@TheX Thanks!
@DoR I think that is right anyways, going off bad memory...
DoR
DoR
18:34
@TheX It works

Q: How do I restart Unity

Yuriy VoziyI know about unity --reset command. But how can I simply restart Unity when it starts beign buggy without resetting its profile?

18:48
you don't even need the replace
it's just there to match what people expect
unity by itself does the trick
that one needs votes
(update gimp ad)
or maybe the two can be merged?
@JorgeCastro that is epic
@RolandTaylor I'd say merge.
dude I love the Ubuntu site
it is one of the (almost the single site) I really enjoy just browsing to and rereading the content :)
@RolandTaylor sorry I had to leave earlier
@StefanoPalazzo sorry to you too
19:03
no problem :)
@OctavianDamiean you were right about the "x" option
(for unrar)
@Trufa nice :)
bugger!
it does exactly what I need, thanks!!
I pressed the disable touchpad button on my laptop and now it won't re-enable...
I remember doing this on 10.10 but can't remember how to fix it
19:05
@Greg the normaal way?
@Trufa if you're talking about pressing the same button again... yes I've tried that.
I think you have to go to pointing devices and then...
@jgbelacqua I think we should symlink to
oh I found my old note: sudo modprobe psmouse
@Greg yey!
19:08
panic over. kettle on.
@lazyPower have you stop wondering?
@StefanoPalazzo: Here!
yeah :) I figured ishould ask elsewhere but really tho... who here has moonlight installed? (the mono silverlight equivalent)
reason asking, i'm curious if this control i just wrote will break on moonlight.
@GeorgeEdison I must be confused, what's the json query url for your server?
19:11
@lazyPower I would never install that software, its name reminds me to that idiotic movie
@StefanoPalazzo http://audata.quickmediasolutions.com
@OctavianDamiean not the point ;)
Then it's '/similar?title=...'.
Oh!
I almost forgot. It runs on port 12346.
ah!
that's why I get "Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)" :)
@GeorgeEdison mine's here btw: http://50.19.108.78:8080/similar?title=asd
what sort of response time do you get on that?
I'm not first checking my server, with a 0.3s timeout, then your server with a 0.5s timeout, and if both fail I just query the public SE API. At worst, that adds 0.8 second to every query, assuming both are down. The SE query takes something like 0.9 seconds.
days like today I wish I had 60 votes
19:20
this is fun, writing a cam capture applet... with my debug screen open i get to see all of the irritated faces i'm making :P
oh man, @GeorgeEdison, I need 'tags': [].
totally forgot to tell you, sorry

Q: How can I set up that the menu bar on the left is always shown?

T. LenzHey, I alway will see may menu bar on the left site. So I can switch faster between programms. In the Ubuntu Netbookremix 10.04 it was no prblem. But now the status bar is hide by default and i cant find a way to change it. so is there a way to change?

Q: How to make global menu always shown on unmaximized window in unity?

kholisUser don't need to hover top panel to see application menus. But if application maximized, user need to hover top panel to see it's menus (like current unity behavior). Thanks

dupes
but I can't find the original :S
@JorgeCastro link me to them, I have enough left
@JorgeCastro if you link me i'll use my votes to do your bidding, oh dark master.
I mean in general, I ran out a while back and there are many good questions!
@RolandTaylor found one
looking for the other
19:24
@JorgeCastro thanks ^^
oh man I can sense epic upvoting of my Unity configuration answer in the next couple of weeks :D
@RolandTaylor found it, linked them both
@OctavianDamiean you can vote to dupe the ones roland just linked. :)
there we go :)!
@JorgeCastro I can just flag them, in a few days I'll be able to close-vote them tho :)
19:27
flagging will work!
@JorgeCastro done ;)
@OctavianDamiean dang, looks like people need to vote you up
hmm I can't work out how to change screen brightness since the upgrade ... my usual fn + left / fn + right combo is bringing up the OSD, but there is no change in brightness ... any ideas?
I started to :P
woo, 244 rep today, finally hit the rep cap, I haven't done that in like months
19:31
@Greg system?
@JorgeCastro uh? Why woot? :D
@RolandTaylor ubuntu 11.04
acer aspire 4810T
graphics?
wait - I got em
@Greg my acer did that sometimes
I think it's a kernel bug
@JorgeCastro mine did when I installed ubuntu on it for the first time (10.10) but since the upgrade to 11.04 it is doing it again
19:33
yeah - intel graphics, quite likely something got borked along the way, if it doesn't solve itself after a few updates, report a bug :)
can't remember what I did the first time!
@StefanoPalazzo: :)
@GeorgeEdison I'm really sorry, no idea how I could have forgotten this
You'll have to give me a day or two to get that ready.
@GeorgeEdison sure, I'm ready to push it when ever, and I guess we won't go through app review for a few days
And if you do it after app review, I can just push an update, since I've already pushed one alternative API server it won't be a major update, i.e. no additional review required
19:47
@StefanoPalazzo it's ok the lens launch fix won't be looked at until monday
so you still have time
no luck changing my screen brightness, I'll just have to get my sunglasses on
this would be a good question for the site
morning
@StefanoPalazzo tell me when you're ready for the lens review, though you know that I'm moderately familiar with your codebase now :)
I've gotten good use of the lens today
19:53
it is quite good
I haven't kept up to date with changes over the last week or so - how visible is it to end users?
@StefanoPalazzo I'll do my best to get it done today... we'll see.
I'm also doing 'the big upgrade' today.
last I saw the launcher icon was gone, and I can't remember whether the results were showing up in a global dash search
@ajmitch Well, I am ready. Two things to consider: 1) I'm hopefully right in saying that adding George's server (which is a new string in a 1-tuple, making it a two-tuple [that's it]) won't require any review, so that I can just push it when the server is ready, and 2) We may (I'm not sure) want to wait for the Unity bug to get fixed. Apart from that, my code is ready to go
I definitely want to wait for the bug to get fixed before I push it before the ARB for voting
makes sense to me
19:55
& aside from the code being ready, I need to fix up the packaging for extras
which I'll just do in a branch & then push somewhere for testing
Well... time for the big switch. I'm doing the CD install so I'll see you all in 30 minutes or so (hopefully!).
not doing an upgrade?
@ajmitch Nope.
I can hardly remember the last time I actually used an install cd on one of my own computers
I did that last time... but I got so much junk on my root partition that it's easier to just start from scratch.
19:56
@ajmitch on that point, note that the packaging was done by Ken van Dine, in case you need to talk to someone about details
@StefanoPalazzo I know :)
good good :)
@ajmitch hey, hypothetically speaking
can we make the packaging for python lenses generic?
so say, next python lens author can just base off the work?
@JorgeCastro I hope so
sort of like a CDBS-style debian/rules type thing?
19:58
I was thinking pkgme or similar templates
but it was on my todo list
didrocks owes us a quickly template too
I could probably whip that up as well given some time
