"make" fails after i configure it to /usr

@Explorer LOL

Whew, so many flags, edits, and Regulator's stuff!

@Oli I've been working on this for about a month now; there's no good way to detect a modem as they usually detect as a random USB-Serial driver.

@Explorer haha. actually people buy macbook air to install ubuntu on it
i would never do that. buying a mac seems pointless to me if youre not gonna use it with macos

@Oli gpsd actually opens each USB serial device and pokes it to see if it is a GPS device; I want to do the same thing for modems and then use the program in a udev rule to symlink to /dev/modem automatically.
@Oli Its actually turning into just a 30 line program though so I'm coding it myself.

4:01 PM
@ErenTantekin yeah it is...
Actually buying a Mac at all... is pointless :)

@ErenTantekin no worries, I'm fine with all kinds of OS'

haha
well sorry, i wont share my mac with you anyway.
:D

oh you won't?

how dare you.

4:03 PM
yeah!
you're in trouble now son....

hahah

I'm adopting a kitten!

thats great

this guy needs an account merge, dont worry about the post ill edit the question to include the information.

i tried to compile it again to /usr. this time i get no compiler errors but it gives weird errors about permissions etc. what happens if i do "sudo make"? should i try it?
how bad could it be
it asks me "rm: descend into write-protected directory `html'? "
during "make"

4:11 PM
@MarcoCeppi I love you man! cries like a baby

rm: remove write-protected regular file `html/c39.html'? yes
rm: cannot remove `html/c39.html': Permission denied

what is it trying to remove

I'm not sure you should proceed until you try that in a virtual machine

doesnt matter im on a fresh install

4:12 PM
that way you will be able to find out what it's up to

i will reinstall
hm

IT DOES MATTER
you can end up hosing your current installation :O

i know
i dont care
i will reinstall anyway

Q: Resizing partitions on a RAID 0 Array on Ubuntu Server 11.10 by command line

LaiceOh boy this is a qustion and a half. Simply put when i set up the server it wasn't intended to be used for what it is now, and root (/) has run out of diskspace, while /home has tonnes of the stuff floating around. Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on rootfs ...

really stuck with this one :S

it didnt work
i cant compile to /usr
i get 500 "permission denied"s
during "make"
isnt it weird

try sudo make
:S

(you really should be doing this in a VM)

4:26 PM
before that
i compiled to another directory

and changed my LD_LIBRARY_PATH
to look there first

I see

it did work but
my gtk theme was changed

lol
:)

4:27 PM
:D
CPPFLAGS="-I/opt/gtk/include"
LDFLAGS="-L/opt/gtk/lib"
PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/opt/gtk/lib/pkgconfig"
export CPPFLAGS LDFLAGS PKG_CONFIG_PATH
 LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/gtk/lib"
  PATH="/opt/gtk/bin:$PATH"
  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH PATH
i did these
which line do you think could have changed the gtk theme?
any idea?
anyway im just trying a sudo make

I am not sure if any specific "1" did it...

it might be that GTK as you installed it has no theme engines
if I were you I would ignore it for now.

why :)

What you need to do is make sure the scrolling thing works, write a patch, and submit it
@ErenTantekin because the theme isn't the important part

4:31 PM
the scrolling tweak does work.
however i just set it the way i like. i am not offering a way to the user to change it. so i cant send it.

Well all you need to do is find a way to make it possible to change it

i will also need to make a gnome patch (a gui to set the scroll rate)
h
hm

That's not very useful for anyone else if you find how to change it and stop there :)
I mean it's perfectly fine, but in the spirit of Open Source (jk on that) - it's a good thing to share it (at least the idea) with someone who might be able to implement it.
it's more likely to happen now than ever before as well

of course i want to share it.

4:34 PM
but what i can do is
i can make a global variable and make scroll rate dependant on it
but then
who wil implement the gui
without a way to change the scroll rate, my patch is useless right?
it will look for a varible in something.conf. but there is no value there. so it will crash. its worse actually.
so i dont know how i can turn this into a patch

Well, write down your idea, and we'll work out some day soon who to send it to

where?
gtk website?

google docs :)
brb I have to move my laptop

ok
seriously what is the place to send this :)
is fine i think

@MarcoCeppi hey, from now on, have all the items you have on blueprints
not summit notes

5:05 PM
@ErenTantekin I think there is an ubuntu dev mailing list

5:30 PM
Hey all.

Hello @GeorgeEdison.

Oli
The postponed Ubuntu EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) membership meeting will now happen on the 10th Nov 8pm UTC. Anyone who can't make it to that will have their name carried over to December's meeting.
4
Anyone who can make it to #ubuntu-meeting on Freenode to cheer on Stefano and me (as well as anybody else who's going up for Ubuntu membership) would be appreciated from the applicants. We also all have testimonial sections that people can add to if they can't make it to the meeting.

jrg
Haxed. :)

@JorgeCastro Aye

5:45 PM
morning

@GeorgeEdison @ajmitch hi hi
@jrg put it on 2buntu or you're fired XD
(jk :D)

jrg
@RolandTaylor Going to test with my personal blog first. :D
Then we can talk about it on 2buntu. :)

jrg
btw, this you? "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 :P

5:49 PM
WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHO JUST VISITED THAT LINK ON A WINDOWS NT BOX?!

@jrg Warning: I need to fix some bugs in the JS code.
I'd suggest waiting until I fix them to deploy that.

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, I noticed a few.

Oli
@jrg visited what?

I'll try and get that done soon.

5:50 PM
guilty as charged Oli?

jrg
@Oli bjmdw.dyndns.org:88/stackaddtest.html - I have tail -f /var/log/apache2/access.log on my other monitor. :P

I'm using Windows 8.
...that should show up as NT.

jrg
Oh, I didn't read the rest of the user agent string. AppleWebKit/535.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/15.0.874.106 Safari/535.2"
:P
Just the Windows NT thing stuck out like a sore thumb. :P

I should edit my UAS to say "jrgeater"
>:)

5:52 PM
Yeah, for some reason, Windows 8 is using the version number 6.2 :P

jrg
that'd trigger all sorts of alarms. :D

@GeorgeEdison they probably did it for compatibility or to hide certain things before the full release

@RolandTaylor But they already did that for Windows 7 - which uses the version 6.1.

Anyone want to see a screenshot of FlackBot's secret control panel thing?

5:53 PM
sure

I'm actually disappointed that nobody's going to be using it :)

jrg
blinks I need to stop reading my logs. "Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.0; Windows 3.1)"

@jrg wasn't me :D
I was too busy with G+

hey all (star it)

jrg
5:58 PM
@Oli .... you? lolz

@jrg Lol... I should visit it with Netscape Navigator 4.7 on Windows 98 :)
...except that machine isn't powered up at the moment.

Oli
I didn't even think Win 3.1 could get online. I thought you needed 3.11 for that

jrg
@GeorgeEdison ... I need to cure my OCD of log watching. This is going to drive me crazy. :P

thanks @RolandTaylor

Oli
Or was that just if you wanted workgroup networking? I never did any networking further than IPX over serial in Win3.anything

5:59 PM

:)
I'll be on Gtalk and IRC - writing and afk after

@Explorer I added a comment to my answer.
I'm determined that we will solve your keyboard problem :)

@MarcoCeppi Apparently writing the config file is way easier than I initially thought.
It basically write the entire file inside of the the hook. :D

Hi all :)

8:16 PM
Yup.

jrg
Ugh, 3 hours before I get more votes.... :(

darn, I need more than 3k rep to nominate myself ;)

I'm probably way too focused on the Android tag to even consider nominating myself.
I would fulfill the requirements though. I mean badge-wise.
I would consider nominating myself for AU elections though.

jrg
Key word - "consider". I think at this point, everyone in this chatroom would consider it.

@OctavianDamiean You should see this discussion.

Martin ZeltinI followed the instructions for compiling the Gnome 3 Shell and it did compiled with a few errors here and there but it didn't run. I installed Gnome 3 Shell using sudo apt-get install gnome-shell but I got version 2.31.x but the latest is 2.91.5 or something. So is there a way for me to install ...

@OctavianDamiean ^^ ;-)

Yea seen that.

I've been tweaking it more to make it less...core

One question though. I have seen that you are setting the TF2 server's FPS to 300. Is there any special reason for that?

That's max_fps
So no one person kills the sever by pushing a million frames up

Oh! You force the max_fps of the client! I see.

clients get 20 fps, while marco gets 100 fps :P

Since it is a Quake based game I would suggest 333 instead of 300 or 250.

9:16 PM
:P

My FPS is always over 9,000
New kitten times! Pictures soon :3

wait what? isn't tf2 source engine?
orange box version?
haven't played it for years

Wait wut?
It is a source based game?!
No way!
Holy cow you are right!
Nevermind then.

yeah, i've never seen anyone trying a bridge to rail jump in tf2 :D

I have absolutely no idea why I always thought that TF2 was a Quake based game.
Oh well I decided to give it a try. It won't hurt I guess.

I mean not that I would care that much right now but until I get to 10k it is not unimportant. :D

@OctavianDamiean inkscape → import bitmap → trace bitmap → hope for the best (that you don't see the differences at the small resolution :D)

@JorgeCastro The pictures are better but are sort of redundant. I've given the OP an option to edit their question to ask about theming (which would be much simpler than hacking in GDM) so if they bite, I'll leave things unmerged. You can edit the older Q and copy the image across though.

Is there a quick and dirty way to mark a fs dirty / not cleanly unmounted?
Or alternatively, unmount it uncleanly? :-p
I'm trying to simulate something that is happening in real life conditions.

Oli
11:35 PM
@DavidPfeffer Only if it's not a journaling fs

It is; but when its mounted and I reboot, e2fsck identifies it as uncleanly unmounted.

@Oli thanks for giving them a heads up about answer etiquette :)

There's no way I can make that happen without the reboot?

I wasn't sure if it was something flaggable or not

Oli
@DavidPfeffer e2fsck shouldn't really give you much gyp about that. IIRC it should just throw the journal away and move on (that being the point in it). If you want to force a scan, shutdown -F should do it but I'm not sure that'll help you.

11:39 PM
iirc you can touch /forcefsck, but look up the exact filename
that's assuming that you just want to force a fsck on the next reboot, I'm not entirely sure what you're wanting :)

Any JavaScript experts around?

Oli
I'm okay with it. Depending on what you're trying to do @GeorgeEdison

The console outputs 'e' for each invocation of the callback.
...and I want it to output the appropriate letter from the list.

Ah, I think I found my issue. I have a script that mke2fs's if the disk is bad, but I was checking if e2fs returned >= 1, not >1
Dropping the journal is considered a recoverable error, so it was returning 1

Oli
@GeorgeEdison I'm really uncomfortable with that scope and I think that's your issue.

Basically the floating function ("callback") is well out of the scope of the loop by the time it's called. The variable it now equals has changed. all the way up to the latest item.

I think you probably want to be more robust with your assignment so that whatever object is calling the callback has its own reference to its number - or at least has some indestructible way of looking it up.

11:48 PM
@Oli Yeah, but the browser itself is calling the function... that's how JSONP works.
Someone else found a solution though.

Oli
Yeah I was about to suggest a full on factory but that's simple enough.

It's times like these I miss C++ :)
