7:00 PM
haha then it's not a good calculator in my eyes
I can solve fucking 4 * 5

and that is something that I want my application to do

I need help with "Where does the derivative of q*(t^2 + x) = q / e^x about x equal zero?"

@MickLH Wanna know something weird? iPad doesn't have a built in calculator.

that IS odd
had not noticed

@AidanMueller I don't thing AoE needs a sequel that much
I think AoE reached its peak with AoE 2
the third seemed way too... unfamiliar

7:01 PM
@AlexM. AoE III already exists.
Oh.
Nevermind.

I've watched people who were avid computer users, building and overclocking their own rigs, try an apple product and learn how to be like those cliche helpless apple users that can either click a shiny button or fail to complete the task

@AlexM. I didn't say it did need one. I was just saying that I had misread what you said.

@AidanMueller I think AoE is one of those games that are nicer to play in 2D

I live with someone like that, where if I need them to think technically, I literally have to wait until they use their computer for a while

I only played very little Stronghold 2 so I am a bit skeptical about Stronghold Crusader 2

7:02 PM
If I catch them any time after they have been using their smartphone, they are reluctant to think

I think 3D just doesn't fit Stronghold at all

@Almo I think there are a few other missing apps.

could be

Crusader is like the Quake of RTS games
and I think you can't be fast when you have to worry about the camera angles

you can strafe jump in it?

Jon
7:03 PM

@AlexM. I actually liked AoE III (though I haven't played past versions).

Jon
first 4d game i ever played.

@Almo no, but speed is the main strategy

@Almo And I'm honestly not trying to bash anything, it just scares me and makes me extremely weary

there is no delay for buildings
no delay for troop recruiting
the only delay consists in resource gathering

7:03 PM
@Jon 4D? Explain.

the urgency is further increased in Crusader Extreme

Believe it or not, I used to prefer apple viciously and it's where I learned both how to use and program computers

Jon
@AidanMueller Its a game from the 90s -- The game itself is in 3rd person 3D

where you basically get zerg rushed in the first 20 seconds of the game lol

Jon
actually, it isn't 3rd person.. but a perspective camera

7:05 PM
I already make 4D stuff. Ever notice how in OpenGL gl_Position is defined as a vec4?
:P

Jon
Look up Miegakure

good thing that has nothing to do with cache alignment ;)

@Evan ouch actually my friend
I believe... it does

whoa, a new NASCAR game

That's what I meant :P

7:06 PM
;)

ASSCAR

"Racing in a bowl has never looked so amazing." - Gamespot

although the math tricks that are simplified by it are awesome

"I turned on PhysX, which in turn turned on my wife. Thank you NASCAR." - IGN

@Jon I am liking how the character is 2D.

Jon
7:07 PM
The concept is interesting.. the gameplay not so much.
lol

@Jon Most of the games I make are a good concept, but a good concept isn't what sells :(

you make games to sell them?

No.
Not yet.

Jon
I aspire to one day write a flappy birds game.
someday...

I want to program things other than games :\

7:10 PM
why?

Jon
like what?

I dunno, anything else to change the scenery

Jon
I've written software for scientists

@AlexM. A while back I honestly considered writing apps (i.e. not games) for XBLIG

Jon
7:10 PM
that was interesting

yesterday when I wrote some SQL to build a tiny database for my team I noticed I enjoyed it so much

Jon
SQL , blerg

something that I stopped feeling when coding games since some time ago

because it's quick and easy satisfaction
write more scripts and toys for yourself

I'm sure if I spend a year working on business apps, I'll want to get back to gamedev again

7:12 PM
When I first got into game dev, it was because I wanted to make games that I would enjoy.

Jon
Yeah. Business Apps are pretty boring.

Hmm metaphor or simile?

Jon
forms, validation, data -- boring.

it seems appealing to me now

Jon
I've been doing it for about 10 years now

7:12 PM
Eventually you'll get tired of hot kinky sex though, and just want to fap and be done with it real quick and continue on your day. Doesn't mean you want to dump your girl for your hand!

similarly for programming languages

writing the library that makes you more efficient at writing business apps is fairly enjoyable

I've been coding in C# for...

Jon
iv'e been coding in C# since .net 1.1

6-7 years now
now I only use C# at work
at home I write in anything other than it

Jon
7:13 PM
released in 2003-04-24
so.... 11 years

my main project now is written in C

I've been working with SharePoint for 6 years... Started working with CRM about this time last year... and now I'm going to become our company's integrations guy for making all the fancy business systems talk to eachother
It's going to be a fun year I think

and I'll branch it out to F#, Scheme and Prolog, just for fun

Jon
I hate sharepoint :)

@Jon you hate poor implementations of SharePoint. FTFY. :P

Jon
7:15 PM
Yeah... well I don't like the platform in general..
If I had to program in Sharepoint, I would be very sad.

Once you know the quirks its actually really nice to develop for

I'll try to attend as much as possible to the server side things at work

The problem is users and their silly ideas

I mean I have an excuse, I'm the one reorganizing the team's activity
I can't code games 24/24 and still do that

Jon
Anyone else dream about haunting bugs?
Like, literally dream about fixing bugs?

7:16 PM
nope

i have
not often
but I have
and it sucked

Jon
When I am stuck on a huge problem, I often end up dreaming about it.... so annoying.

I don't encounter major bugs, ever
the projects I work on are small, yeah

I don't dream often but when I do it's usually just bizarre and makes no sense.

YES! I just made a comment, and it was exactly 256 characters long.

7:17 PM
but still, if something goes wrong, I can usually pinpoint the issue in a few minutes by looking at my commits
I don't know how to use git bisect

My question on meta still hasen't got any attention.

I'm still waiting on my question - get in line.

that screenshot has your old avatar, Todders.
you should use it again

OH SNAP BETTER EDIT

But it already has 18 votes.

7:21 PM
My issue is more important than yours though
@Almo I think the picture is roughly... 5 years old?
It was already too old when I used it

Jon
got fat eh?

hmm

Might as well bust out that awesome goggles photo from my freshman year in highschool :P
@Jon Always been a bigger guy :P
I need to take a good fun picture
I've got a viking beard winter cap that might make a good candidate

Jon
ohhhh
do it.

@ToddersLegrande Now now, you don't reasonably expect something as complex as a picture upload script to become stable in a TINY 6 months do you??!?!

7:23 PM
:(

I was joking when I typed that, but then I remembered that this network runs on windows servers, so it actually does literally make sense

haha
I would almost agree except its already implemented for questions... HOW UNSTABLE CAN IT BE

lol... so unstable that they must not be using the same backend?

Also this time next month it will have been a year ;)

hahaha
I just noticed that, it had already been 5 months that he said it was stabilizing

7:25 PM
yeaaaaaaaaaaah

now 6 months after that, I can't resist posting my joke as a comment

6 months is probably an appropriate amount of time to ping him again...
IM DOING IT

If their front-end code isn't a horrible piece of shit, then they could just load the JS module for the answer image uploader into this page, and call it instead of calling the existing one
It's not like it's even integrated into the UI, it's a fucking modal interface
I just know that I tell my teammates they have 2 days to implement something like that
And if it's not usable in a week, fucking gtfo!

haha
pinged Marc with a response to your comment

World of Warcraft’s $60 level-boosts reflect important economic reality
Like it or not, exchanging money for time is increasingly the name of the game. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/02/world-of-warcrafts-60-level-boosts-reflect-important-economic-reality/

7:31 PM
disgusting

Jon
Which is pretty stupid.... Pay money to NOT play the game.
oh ok.

So glad I never enjoyed that game, I would have been hurt and disappointed so many times over the years
Luckily it's only brought me joy, proving me right for saying "Fuck that garbage I'm busy with CS" to all my friends who said to play it

Jon
some of my friends got me to play... i tried the 10 day free trial
that was the end of that.

As you get older, you have more money than time. Makes sense to me. Problem arises from the grindy nature of mmos.

It's like smoking cigarettes or something

7:33 PM
and mmos are grindy because your core users burn through new content in a few hours

well

Without the addiction it's just a repulsive waste of money, but eventually if you let your friends peer pressure you into forcing it down your throat enough times, it becomes technically bearable and you can justify spending your money on it to fit in with your friends

I personally would not pay to skip the game like that

a mate speedran to lvl 90 in 4 days

but I can see why others would

7:34 PM
only doing dungeons

I liked dungeoning in WoW a lot

what's funny is when people do that in EVE

Jon
60$ to skip a game? Just don't play.
like wtf.

a noob in a supercarrier is still a noob.

I did so much dungeoning that I got bored of it
> I'm a huge fan of the idea.

I'm a casual WoW player--I tend to dip my toes in, get up to the level cap, play endgame for a while, then drop out for a year or two. Between my career and personal life, I simply don't have time to spend endless hours playing. My time budget is more like 5-10 hours per week. If I wanted to try out multiple classes in endgame, we're talking months or years to get those characters leveled up.

Sure, $60 is a lot of money, and a lot of people won't spend that kind of cash when they can trade the time instead. But for me, $60 is an impulse buy. I'd *gladly* spen
some comments make sense

7:34 PM
well, if you want to do the level 90 dungeons, then skipping TO that makes sense

@Jon they aren't selling skipping the game, they are selling a 90-level ego boost for only $60 dollars

depends on how much of the game is in the endgame

That's a great price for that size ego boost

some people just don't want to go through killing goblins again when what they want to do is fight the Lich King
the whole character development and gear improvement may not be fun for them

Jon
its still essentially the same crap regardless of what level you are at.

7:35 PM
Sounds like they want street fighter 3D then

Jon
grind.

They miss that point Jon :)

I can't get over that WoW thing lol
You know your game fucking sucks and only lives on addiction, when you can spend years getting people addicted and then charge them to not have to play so much
Unless I've missed that there's some epidemic of WoW players robbing people at gunpoint saying "level me to 90 right now or I'll kill you!"
But that still reeks of addiction to me, maybe even worse

but not everyone does the level skip
it's just available for those who want it
one rule of mmos is to let people give you money if they want to
games with a fixed cost like SCII don't let people willing to pay you $1000 for it do so
personally I prefer fixed cost

i believe in donationware
but probably because I donate

7:55 PM
It is highly unlikely an MMO with ongoing server costs, huge GM staffing requirements and massive art assets would ever work from a donationware perspective.
I donate. Like I gave Cyberduck some money
when I buy name your price music from bandcamp, i pay well
but these are products that can be produced by small teams or one person
WoW employs 2000 GMs, I think
can't leave that to donation

well iI plan on giving it a shot, i see it as free to play in the worst case scenario
So I plan it like that, and if money rolls in awesome

:D

8:17 PM
hahah

8:57 PM
Hey everybody
@GnomeSlice You pumped for the album tomorrow?

@hasherr Yeah man.

It releases as soon as I get out of school, so I'm going to run as fast as I can home.

what album
where
what could be so important as to require such interest

Monstercat 016
It's free for 2 hours tomorrow
30 songs.
Hurray, my packages arrived in Kentucky today and they'll be here tomorrow :)

I bought new charger cables because my old ones "started" to not work. Then I realized they look different though they are supposed to be the same model. Somebody must stole my charger cable / switched with their problematic cable(or by accident). At least the guy didn't take my laptop. I think I should be happy about the fact he took my charger only.

9:14 PM
Yeah.
I need a job...

teach first year programming in college. You prob can do it.

lol
I'm a terrible teacher.
I have trouble articulating even the most basic problems.
But I can solve them in my head easily

as long as you can hello world and explain single/double linked list then you are all good. not that hard; start with hello world assignment then do singly linked list for the two third of semester then doubly linked list assignment.

lol
I don't think any college would let me teach.

This youtube video never gets old...

9:19 PM
@ToddersLegrande lol

cute.

is that the one with "alan! alan! alan!"

no one ever was able to reproduce that glitch. I think they intentionally broke the game or something.

@Almo most definitely is

:D I love that one as well then. :)
Hmm... Maybe that's Steve. Steve! Steve!

9:23 PM
My goal is to get my game deployed by friday
But... There's a slim chance, A SLIM chance that I might get it done tonight :)
BUT I won't deploy until I get my bank account.

:O

So even if it's finished I won't upload for at least another day or two.

*wipes tear*
So Proud

:)
I did this for you, Noc.
@Noctrine omg fail

Markdown :|

9:25 PM
very tear, much edit, so proud.

Meh
                     very tear
                                                                                   much edit

          omg
                                                             so proud

10:03 PM
Imo, that looks much better
Than my old UI

Pip
heyo
Android, correct hashbrown?
play my pong app?

Super busy, right now Pip
Trying to get ready for deployment

nope

lol
What the fuck happened

nothing

10:18 PM
WHAT'D YOU SAY
YOU CHEEKY BASTARD

Pip
lol
@AlexM. you have an android device?

not available atm

I now know where Alex works :O

Not hard to figure out :P
I know one of the apps his studio made has these freaky fruit things on the photos

lol
Todders or Mick: have an android device?

yes

@ToddersLegrande arpamedia.ro
I mentioned it sometime ago

Pip
@MickLH play my pong app (yes it's pong.... at least it is a finished project and it works....)

LANK PLAZ
LAN @ APP ZROTRE
LANK*
(plx)

Pip
?
what was that?

10:23 PM
@AlexM. so I assume that wasn't actually your game? Or google thinks the developer is someone else?

I think it's just a separate branch or sth
the game was developed by an entirely different team than mine, so I've had no contact with it

Pip
@MickLH look for thedevelop34 in the play store if you want to try it
made it with a friend, working on it now actually

@Pip You need to get a better username

Pip
lol
why?

I'm sorry THEPROGRAMMINGDEV3LOP3RGAMEM4K3R just isn't going to cut it

Pip
10:25 PM
thedevelop3r is my friend, not me (I am theprogram3r as usual)

Keep it if you like it. I don't think it's very unique, but then again, neither is a name like Alex M.

Pip
lol

you said '4' when you meant 'r'

Pip
We will change to Xeo Games eventually, but not yet

what's wrong with Alex M.

10:26 PM
@Pip I used to watch Pirated moveis from a Youtube Chanel called Xeomovie

Pip
lol

this is UNACCEPTABLE (provided you withhold the fact that it's acceptable)

Pip
holy crap I cannot get this to work... it will play sound but not show the video part....

hoooooollllllyyy shit heavy
you gotta warn about that first boot lol!

I understand why the last 10% of a game takes 90% of the time.

10:32 PM
ok, so @Pip my honest review is that the controls are nice, smooth and responsive, but you have to get rid of that EFFING "download a free game" nagger at the intro
I was reluctant to accept that it even happened once, but when it happens every time I get literally pissed off at the developer
That and also maybe make left/right handed an option for 1 player

as if there are developers you wouldn't get pissed off at lol

There's a difference between concern and rage
I think you've only seen me act from concern and tough love
I am talking about actual rage up there

@Pip Put up the play page and I'll download it
Arnold Schwarzenegger based programming language ^

I think I suffer from Chronic LongLineitis :(

10:45 PM
Does anyone use fully managed hosting anymore?

fully managed?

11:00 PM
@AlexM. hahaha

@ToddersLegrande Yeah. I guess it would be useful if I was using Cpanel and stuff. But since cPanel costs like, 180+ I worked around it long ago.

@Noctrine I don't follow what you mean by fully managed

That's my point really :\ - I'm trying to figure out what it means.
But we have a call with them tomorrow. My clients have no actual development staff, so long term management would be a problem.

Looks like levels of support for VPS? The lowest level obviously they'll handle standard infrastructure and hardware stuff and then the higher it goes the more hands on support you'll get such as OS and maybe even application patches?
That's my best guess
Core Managed for the most part looks good to me
Depending on staff you could possibly get away with Self Managed - Fully Managed actually looks like a risk to me
Core Managed I am concerned about the OS patches as well though - those can break things.

11:16 PM
I'd advised them to just go with DigitalOcean, they have a local small design / development shop on retainer that I feel could handle OS updates.
It's also, actually fun, the small shop has me on retainer :p

Now I have to ask, what is retainer?
My mind keeps jumping to Final Fantasy... I think it was a term for something in one of the MMOs

Basically paying someone so that if they are needed you have access to them
Worst case, work for money. Best case, money for nothing.

Sign me up.
