6:04 PM
@AlexM. how do you not see right through this one? make android more incompatible with itself and confusing for end users, clear cut marketing strategy for windows phone

just do iOS dev exclusively. Ignore droid and windows phone and be done with it. :)
droid users don't pay anyway

I'd focus on Google's stuff as much as possible actually
Google bought pretty much everything that will be important in the future

your excessive apple fanboying makes it impossible for me to respect you

Apple is still playing in the sandbox
Apple users paying more for apps won't matter when Google will be the one making your appliances

How could I expect relevant facts when I always get biased opinion instead

6:08 PM
your home robot
your car
your NASA spaceships
also Apple users paying more won't matter when Google becomes the only ISP in the world
the sole owner of everything

pc dev 4ever

^

this is sort of funny if you look at it actually
while Apple is showing off some trashbin mac
Google decides to be the only one building spaceships for NASA
makes Android and its competition with iOS seem like a sideproject by a tiny team of theirs

I find Google's broad range of business interesting
very diversified

user4704
Very directionless.

6:12 PM
well they're clever

I applied for a job at Google Montreal to work on Chrome

remember when laptops were the new thing and desktops were "dead already"

instead of trying to gain monopoly now

but they wanted me to go to the Googleplex.

user4704
They have a big hole to dig themselves out of in terms of trustworthiness of projects.

6:13 PM
Google's great until they decide to abandon whatever it is they're dabbling in within a year.

which I can't do since we're not relocating any time soon

they're securing their monopoly for later

Or when pocket PCs were the same

See also: everything that Google has ever done.

at least they fail fast

6:13 PM
haha

user4704
Not always.

user4704
I dunno, it would take me a long time to trust them with anything again.

user4704
That's my stance.

Google is one of the better companies around, even if I think android is a piece of shit

6:14 PM
I was never affected by any of their cancelled stuff

what was the thing that triggered your distrust of google, Josh?
if it was one thing

yeah I'm curious too

user4704
I don't think it was one thing, just a build-up of smaller things.

user4704
I don't have time to go into now unfortunately.

I think what matters was made to work well enough by Google
tiny services are unimportant anyway

6:15 PM
except android

in what ways does Android not work?

never been impressed with its interface
and the whole OS model causes issues

that's not exactly a valid point
since each manufacturer has its own interface

with providers like samsung not updating their version of droid
so the OS feature space is inconsistent

there are Nexus phones for those who care about updates

6:16 PM
I think they would have been better off making their own OS for their own phones and calling it good.

Agreed

but it's not about people who care about updates. it's about fragmenting the userbase

I have a cheap Android tablet that I use to play Fruit Ninja sometimes.

customers for Samsungs are average users

so us developers can't develop for the new featuresets

6:16 PM
and the average Samsung customer buys the new Galaxy S the moment it gets released
that's Samsung's model for updates

iOS new version uptake is staggering. so when new features hit, you can use them
iOS 6 works all the way back to iPhone 3GS

I don't like how there's two buttons to "close" an application (except it doesn't actually remove it from memory).

so you can use iOS 6 features and not worry much about whether someone's phone will support it or not

I think updates are fine among Android devices
I mean if you're still building for 2.1 you should probably take a pause and gtfo

iI always choose to decline updates

6:18 PM
you don't have to reach every user
and almost everyone runs 4.0 or above

no but you want to reach a large number

and I think 4.0's API is decent enough to work with

when Game Center came out on iOS, you could use it almost immediately

Jon
while not alienating others

I've never had an app fail to work, even though I've always declined updates since the beginning
And kept my phones at least 3x longer than average

6:19 PM
@Almo that's not how you compare them
you can do an iOS vs Samsung's Android comparison
and whenever Samsung releases a new update, every Samsung owner gets it

I've also never seen a new feature in the API that I liked

I think we're all forgetting the true mobile operating system here: Chrome OS.

lol chrome os

Only more bugs introduced that I have to work around

just wait until Google gets to own everything cloud
Chrome OS will be the only viable OS

Jon
6:21 PM
ChromeOS = Linux stripped out of everything except Chrome Browser

Mozilla finally said something about Firefox OS again recently.

Lol or homebrew... pretty sure homebrew will always be the better option

I see people wanting to buy the new Galaxy S lol
it only has a fingerprint scanner and some random sensor added
but people buy it anyway
as I said, this is Samsung's policy for updates

Jon
same as iphone5c/5s

new Android OS for Samsung almost means new phone

Jon
6:22 PM
200$ more gets you a fingerprint scanner

@Jon well not really
5s' hardware is superior
quite superior actually

Jon
Yeah I know :P

you can't tell the difference as well as in 5s' case with Galaxy S

smartphones dumb

^

6:23 PM
I think 5s is an ugly phone :\
it looks like some sort of Giorgio Armani special edition

Jon
I just want a wristband computer.

something that Romanian gypsies would buy

Jon
that charges off my bodyheat

I just use an old flip phone for a cellphone. Not into the iPhone/whatever crud.
of course i feel like a caveman because of this

and you should
because at the end of the day

Jon
6:24 PM
well....

you are a programmer that does not keep up with technology

I have a smartphone because I've had a use for a pocket PC, and I already carry a phone

Jon
if you are planning on developing for mobile.. you should have and understanding of the tech

when the whole world uses smartphones, and you don't program smartphones
you are almost irrelevant

@Almo Your applied for a job to work on chrome? Any chance you can make it not take up so much memory?

6:24 PM
I disagree

Jon
which is what happens to the programmers that don't keep up with the times.

Fuck following the latest fad

Jon
They become irrelevant.

@MickLH that almost is there to defend against any case that you might bring up
like, "for NASA you can still program PCs"

I'll stick to browser and desktop development.

6:25 PM
Ok I have to go. Something is lagging. Unless it's Eclipse is running Crysis :)

Jon
Why use a stove, when you can use fire

@RobertHolman browser = HTML5 = webtech

If you're following your interest then nothing really matters

webtech = mobile dev nowadays

Jon perfect example

6:26 PM
I doubt the Call Of Duty developers are irrelevant because they are not developing for phones.

Some dishes as made over an open flame, despite the invention of microwaves

@Almo CoD is developed for consoles, mainly

that's my point
they are not irrelevant developers

well damn

you said if you're not developing for phones you're irrelevant because everyone uses phones

6:27 PM
In fact, cod mobile is irrelevant :P

@AlexM. The other day you wrote my name without a capital "A". How dare you do this?

Jon
"in the future"

2 mins ago, by Alex M.
@MickLH that almost is there to defend against any case that you might bring up
2 mins ago, by Alex M.
like, "for NASA you can still program PCs"
@AidanMueller I write your name however I want
problem?

A family barbecue is not as crazy as NASA

6:28 PM
it's yours then
take it elsewhere :D

You don't see me going around saying "alexm."

wouldn't care even if you did

Jon
the word my girlfriend hates the most is cunt

@AlexM. When the whole world uses toilet paper and you don't even make toilet paper, you are almost irrelevant (to the bathroom industry)

There is a fire alarm going off.

6:29 PM
Do you see the error in this logic now?

it's a pretty ugly word, Jon

Stupid fire alarm is so annoying.

@MickLH "bathroom" industry is too broad, sorry

Jon
computer industry

your analogy is wrong

6:30 PM
Not broader than computer industry
And you have confirmed (explicitly) now that you are not willing to consider another point that could show the error in yours

Jon
lol

Bathroom industry? I feel as if there is a pun in there somewhere.

I'm not even bothering that much to confirm anything actually
feel free to contradict me lol

Exactly
Not even bothering to think that much

if it means that much to you that I agree with what you say, then:
you are right

Jon
6:31 PM
not sure why you are so adamant into proving alex wrong, lol.

I'm don't care to prove anyone wrong, I care to move forward on a conversation
If the path of learning closes, then I find another or abandon the connection

by proving alex wrong
we get it

@Jon because he's MickLH lol

objective-c and java suck anyways

Jon
omg

6:32 PM
i like obj-c :(

I am beginning to wonder if the fire alarm is a false alarm.

Jon
if you don't die, you'll know
else, you'll be dead.

It's not in this building.
Yes! It stopped.

Jon
maybe the fire burnt out the alarm circuitry

It was driving me crazy. It was just loud enough for me to hear, but not loud enough for me to understand it.
Oh great, it's back on again.

6:35 PM
Everything you wanted to know about the security-focused Blackphone
Preorders are open for the $629 device. We even saw a working model! http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2014/02/everything-you-wanted-to-know-about-the-security-focused-blackphone/
I'd rather be spied upon than pay $629 for a phone

It has gone off 2 times in a week now.

the chocolate chip muffins in the fridge here are 560 calories. :o

"PrivatOS"
lol wut

Jon
maybe its some almost deaf guy's alarm clock.
chocolate chip muffins are horrible for you...

yeah
totally
but they taste good
but at the level of calories... I can't go near them.

Jon
6:36 PM
I used to eat them a lot.. .then i saw they were like 500 cals each
Totally not worth it.

hahah yeah

@AlexM. Don't rely on almo's offended ego to save you forever, if you show @Lasse tough love about mathematics that he thinks he knows, then you are showing everyone that's how you feel it should be done, so I am obligated by the golden rule to teach you how metaphors work against your will
Metaphors have proportions @AlexM. ;)

Jon
I also one time, bought the largest muffin ever.

@AlexM. Can not just get the OS for free?

Jon
in montreal

6:37 PM
Or cheaper anyway?

how big?

@MickLH or you could just abandon it like you said you would :P

what do you mean by almo's offended ego

Jon
I wish i would of saved the pic

also what's that about lasse

6:37 PM
urgph

@AlexM. Rather than paying for a secure phone, Richard Stallman choses not to have a smartphone.

and what the hell are you trying to say
I told you, you are right
what do you want more

richard "muh freedumbs" stallman

I want you to understand how little I appreciate trying to jam feelings into a logical discussion without proper disqualification of the resulting statements

I don't really feel like analyzing your novels that much right now mick

6:40 PM
@RobertHolman I personally think he is a bit extreme.

either get your point across as quickly as possible, or drop it
it's not like it matters in the end anyway

If you feel that a single sentence which is not run-on can quality as a novel then I am sorry for your state of mind, but I'll get to the point as you request

Jon

Stallman IS extreme
but htat's kind of the point

@AlexM. so in my metaphor of comparing browsing the web to taking a shit, actually taking the shit is the internet, and whether you use your hand (PC) like back in the day, or toilet paper (Mobile) there is not just the shower (NASA) which can only break the argument with fallacy anyways, but there is the toilet itself (Routing / Switching network), inseparable from the task of shitting just as much as the toiler paper is

6:43 PM
okay

Thank you.

to that I replied with "you are right"
I thought you'd say something new

Jon
So essentially, not owning a smartphone, is like wiping your shit with your bare hands.

hahaha

:P if you convert metaphors to similies, yes
otherwise it literally IS wiping shit with your hands ;)

Jon
6:45 PM
I used to read archie books when I shat... now I play games on my smart phone.

we have a GBA in one of the toilets at work lol

Jon
probably full of bacteria.

High tech bacteria house

@Jon most likely
it only has a VRally cartridge anyway

Jon
everyone is currently home with pink eye for some unknown reason

6:51 PM
get warioware megamicrogames
best gba game

I'd rather play it on an emulator than on the toilet's gba for some reason lol

:D

Jon
hahaha

god i hate the friendzone

how the future will be:
for any Person p in the set of persons P
the fireworks are caused by unidentified entities

6:55 PM
@Almo why do you say so many reasonable things in a row and then kill it for me with irrational apple hype?

My experience with mobile dev leads me to believe that at this time, the most efficient way to proceed is to go straight iOS and ignore other platforms.

I mean trying to compare stats between Apple and Android app store is ridiculous, Android app store has lower bar of entry which means more free apps which means lower average.

I have direct info about real apps that sell tons on iOS, and their corresponding droid versions sell 5% or less of the iOs version
that's why

If there's already a free version, why would you buy some pay version?

I'm talking about apps for which there is only ONE version
like, Agricola for example

6:57 PM
any age of wonders fans here?
there's a new game coming out soon gog.com/game/age_of_wonders_3
preorders started

@Almo All these silly mobile games are interchangable

Agricola is a boardgame
it is not interchangable with anything

Forget about your company and put yourself in the shoes of the consumer who just wants a game to play

@Almo Doesn't Android have the most market share? You'd think Android apps would sell better.

that is the paradox, aidan

6:58 PM
@AidanMueller Why would they sell better? There is a free version of everything

@AidanMueller cheap merchandise has a lot of buyers

there is not a free version of everything

I can't even find a good calculator on iOS, but my free calculator on Android can integrate sin(x^2) accurately without internet access

@AlexM. For a second, I thought you said Age Of Empires III

I have a good calculator on iOS
RPN and everything

6:59 PM
What's it called?

fuck that algebraic shit :)
I don't know the name, actually

that being said, I'm going with Android for my next phone because iOS doesn't even allow me to intercept calls and send SMSs in the background
