cool :P
see u in a bit

Is it a live chat? Usually they start out reading from a script and sometimes stays that way the entire chat

the responses do seem canned now that you mention it
now they're accusing me that I did not use my real name or something
lol
okay, so I now know how to change the name
but the change from Bogdan to Alex is a bit too extreme so I'll probably have to send them A FREAKING PICTURE OF MY ID CARD
as per their policy

10:09 PM
lols

now I have no idea what to do
if they somehow block my account till I verify it, I won't be able to get back to clients

send em a pic or make a new account idk

they do not mention this in the FAQ

@BogdanMarginean Spambot: Thanks , I’ve recently been searching for info approximately this subject for a while and yours is the best I’ve came upon so far. However, what about the conclusion? Are you certain about the supply?

chat FAQ:
Do I have to be nice?
Answer: nope, we like naughty users ;) ;)

I once had a dream where....

this one time in band camp...

A person named Santa asked on GD.SE chat:

Does anyone have a spare list of all the naughty and unliked users on GD.SE. I lost my copy. Thanks
It never got closed.

lol
ohoho here's a nice job guys
so, title:
Computer scan software - for Mac and Windows
okay, all cool, now here comes part of the rest:
Hello,

I need a simulator software that pretends to run a checklist of items on computer. I need it to be a Mac version for 10.5 and up and Windows version for 7 and up with a simple licensing system included.
This should be a quick project, as the software requires nothing actually to be done but rather a simulator that seems to run a series of checks that will be provided at the start of the job.
hahah

10:25 PM
Speaking of oDesk I took the Game Dev Skills Test

it's $100 in budget

I scored a 2.6 Passing Score was a 2.5

so I'm guessing the $90 are for the developer to shut up

@BogdanMarginean lol

I should tell the employer he'll be on santa's naughty list next year

10:26 PM
Looooool
That test made me feel pretty dumb truth be told

don't feel

7. Particles 100%
4. GPU 50%
8. Programming 67%
10. Texturing 67%
3. General Questions 50%
9. Rendering 50%
2. Audio 25%
5. Maths 50%
11. Visual Effects 33%
1. 3d Modeling 100%
6. Network 33%
NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

if you saw the formatting in the C# test, you'd realize they were all written by some random cheap guy on oDesk itself
I'm in top 10% on the Windows XP test
FYEAH!

O:
nu :_:
Windows XP is gonna get cut - LYEAH!
(LolYEAH!)

I love it when you guys say "nu" :P

10:28 PM
xD

nu = no in romanian
one time I opened up FB and ppl were all like "nuuuuu"

O: oh wow how coincidental

and I was like "wtf everyone speaks romanian"

Haha XD
845th out of all 1202 test takers
Yeap

top 10% at U.S. English Basic Skills
hell yeah lol
I took the easiest tests :(

10:33 PM

good guy indiedb
AlexM is taken
AlexM. is not

I should invite three more friends to go by the name
AlexM..

and AlexM...

10:35 PM
Wheres your IndieDB profile?

daaang
Level 11
wheres my profile...
umm

I post a lot in my forums

I would've been like lv 1 without it

10:38 PM
I'm not 15
lied about my age :P

I'm 20, didn't lie about my age :P

LOL
I couldn't make a profile if I didn't lie - so lying is good!
:D

sent friend req

Hmm didn't get it must take time for me to see it...
All ur friends are from Romania!
I feel special :P

yup, and all of them are team members :D

10:41 PM
O:

don't do much on indiedb besides posting on our forum :(
it's a very horribly bad website
with horrid interface
Mr. Bumpay is myself
I use it to actually double-post on the forums
because you can't normally double-post
even if the old post was from a year ago

I totally wish I could help you guys but I think I'd be more of a burden :P since I'm new to 3D. Your game sort of reminds me of Amnesia (browsing through screenshots). Do you guys plan on having a physics engine?

well Unity uses PhysX
atm Ars Ignis is on a secondary plan, I'm mostly looking at getting the mobile puzzler and the website done
and try to get some income through them
otherwise I'll just work on Ars Ignis for a few more months and then stop because I lack the funds

Awesome :D I'm trying to do something similar to The Walking Dead in terms of gameplay and I require top-notch artists which means money is involved. I doubt anyone would want to work with me though for free unless I develop a stellar track record.

good luck! :D
we'll both make it somehow

10:48 PM
Got your friend request O:

yay!

Something else I wanted to make was a sort of History Battle Sim with Super Brother Sword and Sworcery like art

sounds cool :O

Thanks ^_^b I stopped because I couldn't find ANYONE (except this one person on deviantart who was too busy with college) who could do the art.

it's not that fun working with volunteers :(
I can't wait to be able to outsource as much as possible of my game, so I can cut down the slackers

10:53 PM
Yeah - that's what happened to my last project :/ I had two slackers - except my musician.

though this taught me an important rule

I just let the project fade away into the dark lol. It makes me kind of wary now... slackers can bring an entire team down.

never give a team member too much of an important role
split roles in many pieces and give them to multiple members
the more irreplaceable one is, the more trouble you'll likely have
I've got 2 members who really help a lot
I'll drop the others as soon as I release the site
@CodeAssassin yup, see my important rule

I agree :/ letting one person handle art was terrible(in my situation)

volunteer artists are usually amateurs
and won't ever do what you want
they'll always do what THEY think it's right
can't blame them, can't expect professional behavior for nothing

10:58 PM
^

ditched my 2D placeholder artist for this reason, and started drawing my own or using OGA
atm I've got a reward system implemented in the team

o: wow... seriously?

people earn brownie points for successfully accomplished tasks
brownie points will later on be translated to cash
e.g. 1 brownie point = 1 * 10 romanian lei = ~2$
but I certainly won't do that with the slackers, do before I start this, I'll start an elimination test

the task system ensures people are working in perfect sync
but they're either not working at all
or too much
I'm hoping to have a job bulletin board-like system on my website
like... the quest boards in Dragon Age
but this step is needed
the mess and disorder I mean

11:03 PM
That's pretty genius :) It kinda gets me thinking how Indies manage to make great games without pay... but that's usually because they know each other personally I guess. Not just a random person off the internet.

Oooo Job Bulletin board. Sounds fancy. You have a pretty well thought out system set up.

if I started the team business with paid tasks, I would've wasted a lot of money
because I had no idea what to expect
so it's like a nice experiment atm

How long did it take you to assemble the team? Like where did you look? Did any of them ask for previous experience?

I've learned of enough ways for things to go wrong, and I can avoid them later on
@CodeAssassin not very long, and I found all volunteers in the same place. before indiedb, my game was advertised on the forum of a gaming magazine from Romania only. most of my fans were there
so I posted that I needed help, and they joined
@CodeAssassin yeah, I have no people around me to dedicate the same amount of time as me :(

Ever heard of polycount?

polycount as in a website or the amount of polygons in a mesh?
I can make a cube in Blender :D

11:08 PM
The website
@AlexM. xD I can make a cube and a triangle

nope, no idea what the website is about :D

Dude
It is the SAFE HAVEN
of ALL the good artists
in the entire

I actually did make a stove (not textured because I had no idea how to do UV mapping)

Universe.

but that's because there was no need to work with normals

11:09 PM
BOOM MIND BLOWN

Your blender skills are better than mine :(

I tried to make a cube-shaped building

and I was unable to get the walls to render properly
because of normal thingy blah blah
thanks :D I'll be sure to take a look there
instead of oDesk

:D
They are pretty good doing Low Poly stuff too

yay lechuck
and manny

11:11 PM
:( LucasArts

I've got a guy making some 3D placeholders atm
he just learned how to do it, and managed to provide a cogwheel mechanism, pressure plate, arrows and more
animated too
he also did some research and came up with the handbook idea, that you can also see me adopting on my blog
I actually adopt it on any project now
so you may say that he had a huge contribution to the team so far
actually this was the most important lesson I learned
to leverage each member's ability as much as possible, and find the best spot for each of them to work in
also, let them experiment as much as possible
might not use the final result, but interesting stuff can come out of it
another lesson was how to keep the safe distance between myself and the team
I've got one team member who thinks EXACTLY like me in terms of plot and dialogue

O_O
Woaaaah lol....

naturally, my reflex was to start a conflict, because he was eating up my own work

Power Struggles!?

though I had the idea of putting another member on top of him
so that his tasks would come from him instead
thus, he's now writing stuff on another branch of work
don't mind the other branch to look somewhat like mine
just wanted to secure mine

11:18 PM
haha
that was a clever way to defend yourself :P

but that's a good way of dealing with stuff instead of getting emotionally crazy
it works with haters too!
that's the role of community managers (among other roles)
they make sure only what counts gets to the devs

^ haha fans :P

after one hour of debugging I've just found out my input data was incorrect :|

yeah, "fans" :D

@Gajoo Lol. That happens to me some times :)

11:22 PM
the idea of setting sub-leaders had to be done anyway
it was hard to keep track of everyone
now they manage themselves, and I just take a look at the results
then I either get the ribbons or the baseball bat out :P

Ugh oh
:_:

lol jk
they're awesome guys, and we all know what we want to do
a game inspired by Arx Fatalis and Gothic
they deliver accordingly

@CodeAssassin it's the most annoying kinda bug, when your code is correct and doing what it is supposed to do :|

@Gajoo <3

Something like this

11:26 PM
looks beautiful :O

That artist.... EXISTS - but they will say no most of the time :_:

didn't play superbros longer than 10 minutes

I have never played it :)
Don't want to. I love their art style though O:

yeah
I'm thinking about using ASP .NET for the backend though PHP is...
well, PHP
but OOPHP is UGLY :(

haha
what does everyone have against PHP

11:30 PM
nothing, I really like it
first thing I do on a linux VM, set up a LAMP
I normally linux VM to do server related stuff
just that I could more easily think my UMLs in a language like C# :P
also, no "$"

4 mins ago, by Alex M.
but OOPHP is UGLY :(
PHP is just a mess to work with if you are doing something bigger

what @ToddersLegrande is expecting is for me to come two days from now

There are tools and frameworks to help with that... but I'd rather not deal with it at all

saying "I LOVE PHP SO MUCH"
:P

@AlexM. I hope not :P
I will disown you

11:35 PM
HIS NAME IS @bogdanMARGINEAN asnjkadsjka at least on my screen :P

but no, it's nice for quick scripts and what I had to deal with so far

@CodeAssassin refresh

but to implement a whole team management system, I would rather choose C#

Yep yep
And ASP.NET is fine for quick scripts if you already have a server
I definitely wouldn't call PHP better in that regard

@CodeAssassin I was BogdanMarginean for myself too lol
I'd switch from Apache to nginx for the real thing
saw some pro args on Ars Technica once
though I'll need to re-read it
oh man :'(

11:51 PM
Xcode Guru Wanted
whenever I read <something> guru
I always imagine a guy with a long beard doing Yoga
while programming with his toes

.NET Evangelist Needed!

Steve Jobs when he was young (specifically when he was working at Atari with Woz)

jQuery Ninja's Apply Within!

@ToddersLegrande now that's a priest alright
Apple Fanboy Needed!
job description:
"my ^#%& imac isn't working what the 3%#% do I have to do"
Apple's customer support sucks in Romania btw
their employees are even more pissed off than Subway guys

11:55 PM
@AlexM. No way... :O
That's impossible

better believe it
McDonald's employees always seem happy
even the guys back in the kitchen

I don't think I can disagree
The dominos delivery people know me too well... I think I should stop ordering pizza
Better stick to frozen before things get awkward

never noticed the KFC employees, but they seemed okay
@ToddersLegrande lol I've yet to order a pizza at home

Dude
I am NEVER
ordering from KFC ever again
In my life
