4:00 PM
not sure about sloppiness, but the employees seem a bit annoyed with every customer
unlike those from KFC or McDonald's

I think Subway employees are the most depressed of them all yeah

that's my only complaint aside from the price

No one hates their job quite like a Subway employee

Especially during the, all footlong 5 dollars specials. Talked to one of the owner/workers at the local subway, he definitely wasn't pleased.
I guess Josh thought your question had merit also @Todders. Validation!

undefined behavior is more in a C sense
C++ is like
"oh hey, here's an ex... crap. sorry man, something broke. I'll let the C below me do the rest"
and BAM, all things go to hell

4:06 PM
@Noctrine Huzzah!
@JoshPetrie <3

Darn, tried to get the monogame team to chime in too, but they didn't really bite.
@noctrine OpenGL is a state machine, so as long as you understand that, and how to maintain states, you could conceivably use both.
and a few more...

@Noctrine but the question just uses OpenTK as an example. I don't know if the same thing could be confidently said about DirectX
I have basically zero low level graphics experience so I have no clue

user4704
I don't understand why everybody loves databases so much. :(

There there Josh pats him on the back

4:14 PM
Gives you more buzzwords when pitching your project?

user4704
"Put it in a database" is an attitude I associate with people who have only made small games. Or non-live games.

File Reading is scary? Database abstractions make stuff relatively easy?

user4704
@Noctrine Direct3D is a state machine too, you can still screw up a state machine if you don't know its state ;)

user4704
I don't think databases make things easier in the long run, though. Especially schema-based databases.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh
I think I would only consider a DB for a large scale game
But It would depend on what I'm doing really
Definitely not for a tiny game
Not my first thought anyway
There probably are use cases for it

4:16 PM
why would you use a DBMS for a game?
it's overkill

Because they can be more efficient depending on the use case

the likelihood of them being more efficient for somebody who would ask that question is pretty slim to none

if it's about storing/loading data, then I don't see it as an inconvenience if the players wait for 6 seconds more

@Tetrad I don't disagree :)
Like I said, database is definitely not the first thing I would go to for a game

damn I remember waiting for 7 minutes for Gothic 3 to load lol
on my old PC
brb

4:19 PM
So... is there like some gathering of the GD.SE gods going on right now or something?
Who are we missing?

user4704
For example, most people think that MMOs store everything in databases.

user4704
But you really only want to store highly-varying, business critical data there. And ideally, in just a blob (no real schema to speak of) because versioning a schema can suck.

user4704
Especially if you are going to version that schema in a destructive fashion and you are also trying to maintain the ability for your servers to be updated without downtime.

In which case we better use remote blob storage so we don't bog down our database ;)

I should get like a referral bonus in World of Warcraft.

user4704
4:22 PM
I hate Perforce.

I have directly and indirectly caused 11 resubs since I started playing.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager "Resurrect a Friend"

Not legal around here.

Collides with the Danish "counter pyramid scheme" something.

4:30 PM
@JoshPetrie This makes me wonder about what I'm storing that I probably shouldn't be.

user4704
all of the things :P

@ToddersLegrande @Byte56

^ There is no Byte56 in this chat room O:

@CodeAssassin that was his point :P
He's the one we're missing

He doesn't come to chat. That only works if they've been in relatively recently.

4:32 PM
@Noctrine doesn't he still get the ping? I thought the autocomplete just doesn't work

I haven't checked his website in forever. I wonder how Age of Goblins is working out for him.

I keep character data (stats and inventory), and pet data in the MongoDB database (for now). Actual account info is stored in mysql.

user4704
Byte comes here occasionally.

yeah he came last time to tell us about his palindrome rep
and then immediately logged off lol

@BogdanMarginean lol....
Guis I made money today. Okay bye.

4:36 PM
oh yeah how did the compo go?

I finished it ^_^b
Sort of a cliff-hanger ending
I might continue development on it - but based on feedback from friends I need to do more work on it.
So I will most likely continue building on to it :D

that's the way :D

Want the link O:
(I submitted it via DB)

sure, drop it here
I'll check it out as soon as I come back from the store
need some ice cream lol

Haha okay
@Everyone PLAY MY GAM
@Noctrine PLAY IT
@JoshPetrie PLAY IT
@ToddersLegrande PLAY IT AGAIN
return feedback(constructive.criticism);
I submitted it under the name Grey Stranger just because it was my username on their site
@Kikaimaru PLAY IT

4:45 PM
my mother told me to never run executables from strangers

@Kikaimaru !111!1 how did u kno!11! izz virus! disable all ur is anti-virus!

which key is any?
i dont understand whats happening
how do i jump?

the read me

why isnt there flashing hint, press x to jump?

DID U READ THE READ ME
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA KORIWA

4:47 PM
i dont want to read, i wont to play

Lol
Crtl - To Change Characters
Space to Jump

i am at first level
and i cant jump

._.
are you suries.

no
wait
i have to press space like three times to jump

Are you running it on FANTASTIC or Poor?

4:49 PM
i dont know i just clicked play
why doesnt esc return me to menu?

how are you checking for keypress?

Um...
Update loop
Ur computer must be........

do you check for something like if key is down, then jumping = true?

:/ yeah, my space bar doesn't make me jump

4:50 PM
LOL
NOway

not that if key was pressed (key is down and then up)?
if you are next to obstacle you can go inside the obstacle
with W/S key

@Kikaimaru Yeah it has a bug
@JohnMcDonald That's weird. It works perfectly on my computer

and all this space, W,S needs to be displayd in game when you approach situation when you need this
can you post the key checking code? :)

I'm trying to find a pattern. I've made him jump twice

it seems random

4:52 PM
3 times

Could it be the frame-rate?

possibly
grahics quality:fastest

It doesn't appear choppy, but this PC doesn't have a graphics card

THATS THE PROBLEM
Fantastic
Or good

4:54 PM
so your game works only with low fps? ;)

Im a noob

well on fantastic quality it works

first 3D game
cut me slack
SLACK DAMMIT

can you post how do you check for keypress? :)

weird, now the up/down arrow keys don't work, but space does

4:54 PM
if(keypress)
{
}

why dont the walls have lightning?

and what is keypress? :)

now ur grilling me
Walls don't have lighting because I don't want them to
@Kikaimaru KEYPRESS CHECK FO SPACE DOWN!

if (Input.GetKeyDown ("space"))
?

4:55 PM
("jump")
Same thing
@Kikaimaru did u finish my gam

input seems wrong, you can move while jumping at some times
oh you can move while jumping only if you move and then jump
not yet, third level
visual cues about in what lane you are in would be nice

Yeah
I know sense of perspective is off

something like chaning colors, or maybe bigger differences in size

hmmm good idea

oh level 2 is extremly annoying :)
your controls are not good enough for this type of game (no mid air movemement)
ok i hate it
:)
graphics is nice though :)

5:00 PM
I cannot launch your game

@Noctrine :(
does it give an error?
@Kikaimaru Thank you! Thanks for hating my GAME :D
LOL

No
It just opens TextEdit

._. What....

@CodeAssassin sorry :) i like games where you die when you do something wrong, but here i die because of game errors and i hate that :)

Are you opening the .exe!?

5:03 PM
Yes
MZêˇˇ∏@8∫¥ Õ!∏LÕ!This program cannot be run in DOS mode.

@Noctrine are you using dos? :)

>>
Shh.

Lol .-.

I was trying to be an unhelpful user for the Q&A process :p
But yeah, I'm on a Mac.

@Noctrine I can make you a specific build if you'd like ^_^b (meaning the Mac build)

5:05 PM
cant you make it run on web?

^^ that

I can definitely appreciate the artistic impression
it's
well not exactly fabulous, but definitely beautiful

@BogdanMarginean Thank you :D

user4704
What is this now?

5:07 PM
I found that using "good" settings for graphics made the input work well

@JoshPetrie play my gam. iz keyloger!

perhaps it's framerate-dependant (not sure if you clarified this before)

Yeah it's not really optimized that well :/

I'm not sure what I have to do though

@Noctrine I'm not a web guy - would I just build for a google native client or something?

5:08 PM
I am jumping near the purple cube

W and S keys
It's sort of inspired by little big planet in that sense
@kikaimaru did you like the ending? It's cheap I know but it's the only way I thought I could end the prototype in time for the compo

oooh
so it's multilayered

@BogdanMarginean Yep MULTILAYERED 2.5D Platformer

WHY IS THAT CUBE RUNNING AWAY FROM ME
STAY PUT YOU *%^#$%#

5:10 PM
haha
got her now!

@CodeAssassin stoped playing it, i dont like dying because cubes cant jump correctly :)

Yeah - I tried to put humor into the game. My writing skills aren't that great but I try my best :D
@Kikaimaru You suck at platforming :D Have you beat I wanna be the guy?

@CodeAssassin no i dont :)

@Kikaimaru Yes you do. :D

how can I switch to the green cube?

5:11 PM
@BogdanMarginean Ctrl

is there a way to switch the view?
I mean the angle

@BogdanMarginean no :(
Wish I added that
added to my list of things to do

it's cool, I think I got it

switching angle could be gameplay element, you need to go somewhere to change camera view to see better in next area

5:15 PM
I love it :D
you should really add more to it and get it done

@BogdanMarginean Haha thanks man :D

angle changing and a better control handling would make it 10x better
but that's about the only thing I can see it needs so far
for a development build it's still pretty playable and finished, I have yet to develop something as playable

^_^ Thanks for the kind words. I worked on this game for about 1 month. I've been doing game dev for about... 1 9/12 of a year
So 1 year and 9 months I think lol
@Kikaimaru this guy has an awesome vocabulary

@CodeAssassin that's some quick progress

5:31 PM
GIMP is surprisingly easy to work with when doing stuff with multiple layers

that one's cool too

I use Paint.Net and GIMP
Though I prefer GIMP because I'm more familiar with it's GUI and capabilities. I guess I prefer GIMP because I've been working with it longer than Paint.Net

does this look like a style worth pursuing to you?
it's the first time I'm doing something other than a color replace in GIMP and obviously, I'll pass it on to someone who can actually design a template
mostly asking about the color scheme

It seems pretty simple :) The color-scheme is pretty simple but if that's the style you're going for than I'd say go for it!

5:40 PM
yeah, simple is what I'm looking for
something inspired from my blog's scheme: vanillacodesnips.wordpress.com
the space between the projects panel and contact panel is a bit too huge
and I might make each project image (like the screenshot) take up the whole panel with extra shading
someone got to my blog while searching for "free 2d game development using lua scripting with ide"
that's some long search term

haha :P some people are really specific when they google

"nice frameworks for connecting to database management systems from C# .net under visual studio 2010 with resharper installed all under windows 8 pro running on an acer laptop"
first result: legit answers
reads:
Looking for "nice frameworks for connecting to database management systems from C# .net under visual studio 2010 with resharper installed all under windows 8 pro running on an acer laptop"? We've got what you want: your_answer.exe
or maybe downloader.exe

5:57 PM
@CodeAssassin, You seem to have included a shortcut to a file readme rather than the actual readme.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager srsly?

Also, I can't jump either.
:(

is graphics quality set to fastest?

it should be set to good/beautiful/fantastic it's not that optimized :(

6:00 PM
I still don't understand how that affects the controls

@JohnMcDonald I'm not sure either :/
@William'MindWorX'Mariager new readme doc uploaded

if (isjumpkeydown)
movingup = true
else
movingup = false
isjumpkeydown = false
or maybe
you're updating the controls in two different places that are out of sync

@CodeAssassin Well this all seems on par with the feedback I gave you yesterday :P
I will say when I'm listening to the music and reading the story I really want to like your game, and then I play it and it doesn't play well and I get sad :(
And then I struggle through the level and get to read again! :D

@ToddersLegrande reward ;)

And then I get into the level and I'm sad :(

6:05 PM
It's a rollercoaster of emotions.

Okay.
Time to figure out silverlight animation triggers

okay, gotta take a shower, done with the website thing
next up, we're monogaming!

997 rep! :O
So close
I better go edit two questions / answers

6:06 PM
@ToddersLegrande I've been on 300 forever :D

I wish monogame would fix their poor handling of not implemented features. :(
I really want to use it when I get back to my game.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager am I safe if I only need to use .Draw() on the spritebatch and some sound playback?

But I refuse after having spend the better part of an hour trying to debug something I did and it turned out to be on their end. :(

so far I can render simple stuff well

Lol unity has obsolete variables. They don't remove it but they give you warnings. Why wont they remove it!?

6:07 PM
The samples?

I'll probably switch to SuperGiant's fork of monogame later on if trouble shows up

I think that's pretty safe.
Haven't found all the errors, but at least vsync isn't implemented. It just does nothing if you change it.
I need a better font for my game!
@Todders, GET IT DONE!

6:27 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager just go upvote something for me instead :P
I'm busy!

I'll upvote once you've found me a better font.

I am font mastor.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager
Comic Sans MS (or Comic Sans) is a sans-serif casual script typeface. The modern Comic Sans was designed by Vincent Connare and released in 1994 by Microsoft Corporation. It is classified as a casual, non-connecting script, and was designed to imitate the historical look of comic book lettering, for use in informal documents. The typeface has been supplied with Microsoft Windows since the introduction of Windows 95, initially as a supplemental font in the Windows Plus Pack and later in Microsoft Comic Chat. The font's widespread use, often in situations for which it was not intended, has...

6:32 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager pick me

@CodeAssassin You got references?

@William'MindWorX'Mariager I've worked with Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Wozniak, and other Silicon Valley Geeks.
I charge 100 per 5 minutes.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager - I'm thinking "Chewy" google.com/fonts

6:34 PM
Or "Boogaloo"

Can I download them someway?
Nevermind

Poiret One
OMG
I might use this for minimal!

What does the Apache 2 license mean?

okay, so I never did anything related to networking in my life
much less in games
at the highest level, in a TCP/IP scheme, is there something I'm forgetting?
start:
waitforconnection()
gotconnection:
while(connection_active()) do
waitclientmessage()
ongotclientmessage:
processmessage()
sendreply()
end while
this is the server (the one who creates the game)

6:38 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager and regarding apache... apache.org/foundation/license-faq.html#WhatDoesItMEAN

is there some fancy way to sync stuff? I'm guessing the client can continuously send "still alive" packages
if it doesn't send for X seconds, the connection is presumed to be dead

@BogdanMarginean I'm equally as inexperienced, if not less experienced than you in networking :P

@ToddersLegrande well I'm not the only one then :D
I guess I could just try it out and see if I break anything lol

That's the spirit!

@BogdanMarginean this is kind of too synchronious

6:47 PM
it's a TBS, is it not supposed to by in perfect sync?

@BogdanMarginean ifs tbs is turnbased strategy, then i guess its ok

yeah, sort of like Risk
I need some nice way to make sure the connection isn't considered dead when a player takes more than 10 minutes to take a turn

You should start by implementing a chat example

and will server be in javascript? :)

To see how it all works.

6:49 PM
:( It's hard to find truly spicy food

My mother's a chef.

the 10 minutes limit will be decreased in production build but during dev. I want my team mates to be able to play a lot
to tune the rules accordingly
@Kikaimaru any player can become the server, it's a TCP/IP connection

She has had to send people to the hospital because they kept asking for spicier food.

it's all C# .NET

So if you want spicy, she's the person.

6:50 PM
@William'MindWorX'Mariager good advice

heh, nice

@BogdanMarginean, You should look at the Lidgren library.
It really makes networking much more pleasant.

yep, lidgren is good
we used it in minerwars

I'll take a look
though it's also an occasion for me to learn about networking
so I might roll my own, at least for the chat thingy

@Kikaimaru You were involved with Minerwars?

6:54 PM
@JohnMcDonald yes

Cool
In what capacity?

everyone did small part of everything :)

we romanians should make a game with our folk heroes, and kick geralt's ass

but i did a lot of work on multiplayer

but our legends are somehow similar to polish ones, in terms of monsters and stuff

6:56 PM
Nice

it was fun, we rewrote it three times, first time someone thought its a good idea to use aspects in game to synchronize everyobject across network, which didnt work obviously :)
second time, we tried to run mission script on all machines and hoped they would stay in sync
they didnt
third time we run mission script only on one machine that send everything important to others
but multiplayer in MW is real mess, for example, you as a client have to tell that you were hit by someones projectile :)
and we sometimes played with normal players on our development build games with cool stuff like teleportation and immortality :)

Yeah, networking is always complex
And those were certainly my favourite classes in Uni.
