Q: Postgres: How is SET NOT NULL "more efficient" than CHECK constraint

Robin JosephQuestion: I'm using Postgres 9.5 and in the docs, it says A not-null constraint is functionally equivalent to creating a check constraint CHECK (column_name IS NOT NULL), but in PostgreSQL creating an explicit not-null constraint is more efficient. I'm wondering what exactly it means by "m...

I would think there'd be a neater solution, even in MySQL. Any ideas?

@PaulWhite Yes, it looks a bit over engineered. But I don't think I have time to write a proper one

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ That's fine. I'm happy to wait for our MySQL expert (Phil) to return.
I thought we'd have a duplicate for that already, but if so, I can't find it,

@PaulWhite not @AndriyM?

@ypercube Actually I wanted to stop pretending to be a MySQL expert :)

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ It's hard to keep up with the extensive MySQL expertise developing in here.

Another year is rapidly coming to an end, which means it's time for some fun. Fun with hats! That's right, it's time for our annual event that brings joy to all and creates hat-fanatics everywhere... Winter Bash!

A: Automatic Date Format Conversion

Paul WhiteSQL Server date/time types are stored in a binary format, not as strings. @TypoCubeᵀᴹ That's one clever algorithm if it can detect basic (elementary) questions :)
It is a cool hat though. Deer stalker, I guess.

@bluefeet So we should assume that you like the "Winter Bash" name?
Pretty bad in my opinion.
Not only because of the "Winter". "Bash" is rather uncommon word.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ it's tradition

@bluefeet I asked if you like the name.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Honestly, I don't mind the name

12:31 PM
@bluefeet Is there an example of where that tradition started that doesn't say Hat Dash instead of Winter Bash?
Not that I really care. I got used to snow and stuff on Christmas cards etc. a long time ago.
Not that there was much in the way of snow etc. where the Christmas tradition started.

@PaulWhite it started in 2012

@bluefeet Ok thank you.
Still a stupid hemiphobic name :-D

Original announcement
Aarthi Devanathan on December 19, 2012
It’s been an amazing year for Stack Exchange, both as a network of experts and enthusiasts and as an organization. We launched twenty new sites, rolled out tons of user-requested features, and are helping 99% more visitors get answers than we were a year ago.

@PaulWhite Decorating trees in winter was a tradition in Greece - and maybe other areas- centuries before Christianity appeared

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Yes I understand pagan stuff goes back a very long way indeed.

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Hat Dash link above.
I only found that amusing since it is the link one encounters from Martijn Pieters' answer to the meta question.

@PaulWhite The Winter Bash 2012 has a link to Hat Dash as well

Mention of hat dash ended in 2013

My suggestion for Hats reached -5 today :(

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ That's meta for you. The community is so often wrong ;)
@bluefeet Was that the end of the tradition?
We really shouldn't troll the CMs. Particularly the nice one that gave us hats.

12:39 PM
True. I surrender

Hat Dash was one year and wasn't for the entire network. When it was developed for everyone it became Winter Bash.
Feel free to continue to complain about it though

And it is technically possible to get snow for Christmas here, I'd just need to go a long way up a mountain/glacier to get it.
Some rich folks do that. In helicopters.

@PaulWhite I think there is a site with indoor skiing activities in Australia (so not so far)
Can't remember if it has real or artificial snow

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Oh there's those in NZ too, thanks for reminding. Snow Planet.
The typos are strong today.

@bluefeet who was the first to gain the blue feet hat?

Community has a Darth Vader hat!

it's even wearing it

Yes indeed.

12:48 PM
My plan is for everyone to get the blue feet hat. Then force a mass update so everyone has to wear it at the same time. Blue feet will take over the world

@bluefeet Would that plan feature telling people what was needed to get the hat? ;)

@PaulWhite re: the taco hat ^^
Since we are now politically correct, I wouldn't be surprised if you received a dozen offensive flags

@PaulWhite hehe

@TomV Possibly for downvoting a post that was subsequently deleted?

@PaulWhite Then I should have it for Toad uppercase NAA
unless it has to be self-deleted

I'm only guessing. In past years, my secret hat guesses have been uniformly poor.

1:17 PM
@PaulWhite I still go with the offensive flag explanation

@TomV Maybe a comment flag?
I've heard there are a million super secret hats for flagging comments.
Maybe more than a million.

@PaulWhite I'm trying to, I need 47 more flags to get the Gold badge hat

@TomV Hm? Which gold badge?

Marshal

doable during Winter Bash - you've got 3 weeks

1:24 PM
@TomV Cool.

@PaulWhite Plus it has the added benefit of making you work

@TomV There is that.

@bluefeet Do I get it if I reach 1000?
need only 37

> Marshal
gold; awarded once

@PaulWhite ah yes, thnx. The hat is for the badge, not for 500 flags

1:38 PM
Still, there are millions of other hats for comment flags. Probably.

Still there might be a secret badge for X number of helpful flags raised

One never knows. It's secret.

We don't do hats for flags, we learned in the first year that's a bad idea

Yeah but continuing with bad ideas is a tradition :-D

@PaulWhite It's almost as though you actually feel offended :)

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ nice!

A_V
I guess I'll just open an SR ticket with oracle

2:37 PM
@bluefeet Will you reveal the details of how each secret hat is acquired before the end of the Hats? Or only after Jan 8?

A_V
Would you consider this question poorly worded ? Not concise ?

I think that one is due to my deleting old comments but the exact details may differ from the 2015 similar hat.
Delete X comments that fulfill certain criteria (posts have been edited, comments older than Y months, etc)

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I haven't fully decided yet. I might comment/edit here if it's guessed correctly

It would be hard to guess the exact condition

@A_V I don't see anything really wrong with the question but I'm no Oracle guy, but didn't the comment by a1ex07 "solve" your question?
given:
I will, there's a whole bunch of indexes there. 1131474.1 describes exactly what I'm getting, I'm quite thankful for pointing that out ! — A_V Dec 8 at 15:38
You may have given the impression there that your issue is exactly what is documented in the oracle documentation

A_V
2:41 PM
yeah well the solution provided by oracle support was tested but did not work hehe I guess I should put that in there too

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ that's the point

@A_V It seems answered in comments. Add everything needed to answer to the question body, flag old comments as obsolete, remove fluff like EDIT from the question.

@A_V At least the way I read it I figured it was solved

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ Oh cool! I was just looking at that one and wondering what it was about. A search turned up a Sesame Street reference, which didn't help me much.

A_V
@PaulWhite So I should modify the post to make it feel as if I had all the information from the comments prior to asking ?
is that considered as cocky or okay

2:45 PM
@A_V cockay ;)

@A_V Yes make the question as clear as possible, flag for the comments to be removed
Earn a hat in the process if you are lucky

A_V
I'm more of a beanie guy

@TomV That's somewhat cruel. If you are lucky, you may earn a hat – but not necessarily get the problem solved? :)

@AndriyM You know that's not what I meant :)
I would edit the comments in the question myself, but I'm not familiar enough with Oracle to not mess it up

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ I only had time for a quick answer, but I added it anyway. I'll probably improve it with graphics and stuff as time allows.
BTW it came to my attention not because of the bounty, but because of the comment flags :)

3:33 PM
:p

3:44 PM
@TomV Did you actually earn a hat for that?

@PaulWhite Unfortunately not

That won't stop people trying.

It was worth the try

4:37 PM
bye folks

Hi Robin, this is a good question but I've marked it as a duplicate because Craig's answer addresses the large third part of your question. The first two parts of the question aren't a duplicate and if you still want an answer we could edit your question down to just those? — Jack Douglas ♦ 41 secs ago
Not sure if this is the right call, but maybe the question should be split up anyway if it is reopened?

5:17 PM
@JackDouglas Seems the OP agreed.

5:35 PM
What's the Taco about? Have you figured out? @PaulWhite @TomV

@TypoCubeᵀᴹ No clue.

@TomV have you had any answer on question with bounty?

6:10 PM
I AM BACK.

6:37 PM
@TypoCubeᵀᴹ It was an "exemplary" bounty
so it had an existing answer
Apart from that I deleted some old comments, flagged a bunch, edited a couple of old questions but nothing I don't do otherwise except more often so I wouldn't know
