12:01 AM
@schroeder nurd
@schroeder Inspecting your fingernails?
@QPaysTaxes ...

@DavidFreitag As of this morning, it is considered rude to call someone a "nurd".
pls b noice dovid

@Simon Oh?

@DavidFreitag Yep.

@Simon whyfors?

@QPaysTaxes u fokin wot m8
@DavidFreitag Let me see if I can find it.

12:06 AM
That implies that nurd is somehow derogatory, or that somehow being a nurd is a bad thing
Which is simply just not true. There's nothing sexier than when a girl talks nurdy to me

Click on the next timestamp for the rest.

@Simon pls it's not "rude" just because @kalina gets annoyed when you do it.

o pls don't ping her

On the next page, you can see that roro has forbidden me to nurd.

12:09 AM
@QPaysTaxes ban

Which resulted in a quite unexpected appearance of the Fluffy Simon.

cri... colour rendering index?

@Simon Just because you are forbidden to call names, doesn't make it rude

@DavidFreitag Problem is I called her a "nurd" and that's not even calling names!
You're a pendant.

@JourneymanGeek Coupled Resistive Impedence

12:11 AM
ok PWK time babai

@Simon it is kinda offensive.

Oh come on.

@JourneymanGeek BEING A NURD IS NOT A BAD THING

@QPaysTaxes THAT'S OFFENSIVE.
@DavidFreitag EXAC-FREAKING-LY.

@DavidFreitag If he'd at least spell it right....

12:12 AM
Does the i flag stand for nurd?

@Simon Invariant case
Or something

gimme a moment, clearly the morning "Drink this, it'll help with your urge kill everyone" has not kicked in yet

Eyyyy my left nut.
ok bye 4 realz

2 hours later…
2:11 AM
@DavidFreitag Comic

uhm
might be a joke bid lol

2:32 AM
@MarkBuffalo It's not

I want to do something like that :(
this is probably some form of money laundering, lol

1 hour later…
4:06 AM
@DavidFreitag Something's up with that. Weird bidding pattern, if nothing else.

@Xander That's not uncommon. Just people trying to drive the price up

@DavidFreitag No, it is uncommon that a hotly contested item wouldn't have a bunch of snipe bids coming in right at the end.

@Xander Yeah but snipe bids at that much money?
Besides, you can't really "snipe bid" on ebay
Every time you bid it adds time to the counter

@DavidFreitag Maybe. It was a huge leap from the previous high bid. But still, it's a very strange pattern.

@Xander Very strange indeed.

4:10 AM
@DavidFreitag Really? That's new. Didn't used to be that way.
@DavidFreitag Bidding that high, that early is very odd.

@Xander Yeah it adds like 10 seconds, but only up to two minutes extra IIRC

@DavidFreitag Very nice. The sniping used to drive me nuts. Granted, I haven't bought (or bid) on anything from Ebay in at least 6 years, so probably quite a bit has changed.
Late bid adding time is exactly what I wished they would do. Wonder if it put the sniping services out of business?

maybe someone hacked all those auto-bidding bots, or ... you know ... aliens :)

So reading forum threads, apparently the artist who created the auction is in fact, a troll, because that is in fact, apparently, his preferred medium of art, so if that is in fact true, it's highly likely shenanigans were involved.

4:17 AM
@DavidFreitag hahaha haven't seen that one yet

@DavidFreitag Yep, ok. Seems to be true then.

@Xander If a buyer doesn't pay then the bid is listed as cancelled
And the auction goes to the next highest bidder

what the heck is going on with youtube?

@TildalWave ?

4:21 AM
@DavidFreitag Which, I suspect, is why the $20,000,000 bid is cancelled.

@TildalWave Looks like https everywhere mangled it

@DavidFreitag ^ this is what I got after clicking your link

@TildalWave Ur interweb tubes iz clogged.

@TildalWave I bet there's tons of errors in the console

4:21 AM
not according to the console
yes errors but not the ones I'd expect

which errors?

ReferenceError: spf is not defined
TypeError: yt.setConfig is not a function
TypeError: yt.setConfig is not a function
wait I'll go into it

@DavidFreitag I think he probably found a loophole, which he exploited for his Art.

yeah that sounds like it would throw a wrench into everything
@Xander What do you mean?

bah it was Ghostery but it's still odd

4:25 AM
Yeah Ghostery can be a dick sometimes

@DavidFreitag Only that I cannot process or reconcile, without additional proof, that there is any way in which that could have been real, and that a real person actually and intentionally paid $10,000,100 for a stupid $1-at-Walmart hat in frame.

Same with https everywhere
@Xander It's completely unfathomable, but all signs point to it happened...
You might think he did it and just paid himself $10M thus breaking even, but even if he did that he'd have to put $10M into an escrow account and then ebay would take a cut

OK Ghostery just completely lost it, it's fine now after a bit of fiddling with it

I read that as "fondling with it"
I was about to ( ͡◉ ͜ ʖ ͡◉)

@DavidFreitag And file a 1099 on him and he'd have to pay taxes on it, or explain to an auditor that it was both revenue and expense, which is an awkward conversation that would certainly have happened with that kind of money involved.

4:28 AM
@Xander Exactly.

@DavidFreitag Although, it was a couple of days ago, so I don't guess it would actually happen until next year. But still.

I think the problem might have been that I haven't closed my browser for weeks and it updated a couple of times in between

@TildalWave Ha ha, living on the edge, are ya?

4:29 AM
@TildalWave #ThugLife

@Xander no, firefox :P

My browser has been open for 4 weeks

@TildalWave You don't turn off your computer at night?
That's not good for your PSU.

@TildalWave LOK

@DavidFreitag I keep it running 24/7. How else do you think I trick people into hacking me?

4:30 AM
@DavidFreitag I don't think I restarted it this year

@MarkBuffalo Your milkshake brings all the targets to the yard

@DavidFreitag Nobody cares if their PSU doesn't last for 25 years.

or last year for the matter LOL

@TildalWave :\

at least I don't remember it

4:30 AM
Well you do use *nix
So that helps I guess

oh definitely

You probably spend a couple hundred dollars a year on wasted power tho

not at all
I build for silence so good power management is part of the trick

Fans use the least amount of power
And yes, you waste power for ever hour you're not using your computer

sure, but not much

4:33 AM
Unless your computer is an over-glorified laptop you're wrong

@DavidFreitag You're an over-glorified laptop

@MarkBuffalo You can put me on your lap aaaaaaaaaaaaall day. ( ͡◉ ͜ ʖ ͡◉)

@DavidFreitag it consumes about 40 W when monitors are off
I recon it costs me about 10 € of electricity per month, it certainly doesn't show up as strikingly apparent on the bills

@TildalWave So that's about 350kWh/yr which (at least from 2014 prices) is about 80€/yr

sounds about right
I'd say a bit more but OK thereabout

4:39 AM
My total electric bill for the last year was $328
Just having your computer on in my house would account for ~1/3rd of my entire yearly consumption
@TildalWave Right I calculated at that rate for 24/7, it's going to be slightly different because you actually use it so it will be higher for those hours

yeah you live alone in an apartment ... plus I opted for all renewable sources so that adds up to the cost a bit
I should start looking into solar tho

Yeah but I also have an electric stove

2 hours later…
6:30 AM
mornin' all

6:42 AM
morning (ish)

@ColinCassidy watcha' you up early , or has WoW meant you're up very late?

morning

morning

uh, hey @Ferrybig
to all the meta.SE-participants: Is there a feature request about imgur-image inclusions being protocol-inferred instead of http by defaullt?

6:58 AM
@RоryMcCune it's afternoon here, and whilst the internet connection is good I've not managed to download all of the WoW beta... yet

@RоryMcCune, you may know anything about that?;)

@ColinCassidy boo.. just as well you're not out here or it'd be days... that said <fingers crossed> it's looking like september for our fibre cabinets...
@SmokeDispenser the meta-se thing? unfort. not, I don't really look on meta much...
I just know that https everywhere makes a bit of a mess of the site...

@RоryMcCune well, it kinda works - except for images in posts
I am regularly "improving" edits to remove the "http" part of the link. that could be done on upload automatically, imho
(I'm not even discussing that I cannot sign up for area51 with my stackexchange openID;))

Morning folks

but the "unsafe sources" warning is really annoying in that it is absolutely pointless as imgur does https.
hey @RoryAlsop
you know anything about any movement on meta regarding that?

7:07 AM
@SmokeDispenser there are various posts on the whole http/https thing - don't think there is any short term intent to sort the image bit

you could have a good google round meta.se - you may find something I haven't seen

@RoryAlsop, that's why I asked instead of searching. Actively following meta has a way better chance of finding something than google'ing
... but I may as well post the request and get it closed as dupe:) then I know the right one;)

@SmokeDispenser yeah, that works too :-)

at least on meta.SO that works terribly well.
I don't think always using HTTPS would be a good choice, even if it only applied to imgur links. This would increase the latency of the image download, which could have a significant impact on mobile clients, and often have no benefit. Protocol-relative on a web-page would be the way to go. — Aaron Brager Feb 15 '14 at 19:33
WAT
it is planned, though.

7:25 AM
hi

@M'vy bon soir

@RoryAlsop bonjour :) (not really the evening yet, even if it looks like it)

channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2016/C906 <-- technical details on the unbuntu on windows things

Morning

@DavidFreitag no it's just crazy annoying when 50% of what he says is that, in response to everything
I'd rather he didn't communicate with me at all tbh
so judging from the conversation linked that's no longer a problem because he feels the same way

7:38 AM
@RоryMcCune Do they say how they handle forking?

@CodesInChaos yeah fork gets a mention at 11:30 in the video
from what they're saying it should work

It's not as good as having a bash shell built into Windows (so could use it without any installation), but it's a pretty good step

it'll be really useful
apart from anything else you can compile linux ELF binaries in windows
which is kinda weird but cool

I know that I always get frustrated when stuck on a Windows command line - no autocomplete, limited previous lines, crap history search

@Matthew it sounds like they're improving conhost as well so windows command line should also be improving...

7:45 AM
@RоryMcCune About time! I know GUI is more fashionable, and easier to make a statement with, but command line is often quicker and more powerful

@Matthew yeah if they improve cmd.exe/powershell.exe command lines I'll be v. happy, will make a lot of difference. in 10 it's already better than it was, but still needs more work

damn.. I have been lurked into a meta post;)

I never got why we have such a big distinction between command line and GUI.
I'd expect hybrids to be the best choice in many situations.

@CodesInChaos I would love to be able to select files with a GUI, then type a command that applies to them

@CodesInChaos indeed , one I heard about which sounded like a good idea was the MS Exchange management shell that gave you the command line equivalent to any of the GUI options, so you could easily script it.

8:16 AM
quiet morning, this is :)

well. It was coffee time I guess
Now to the real work
@RоryMcCune tl;dr?

1
Q: With Ubuntu on Windows 10, will exploits and malware that work on Ubuntu (or related distros) work on Windows?

halfinformedSo apparently Hell has finally and completely frozen over: the next major update for Windows 10 will be able to natively run Bash, related tools, and even some broader set of Linux binaries/programs from the Ubuntu repositories. From technical info released so far, the update this summer will ad...

It begins...

@Matthew brace yourself

@M'vy well tl;dw I guess. It sounds like they're essentially implementing support for linux syscalls in windows, so that linux apps can run on top of the windows kernel. this is combined with a linux fs that you can run. ubuntu user-mode non-graphical apps should run ok including things like programming languages (e.g. ruby, python, node.js) and things like editors and compilers.
the target market is web devs who use Macs at the moment

@Matthew opinion based?

8:24 AM
@Matthew has this functionality been released? No -> speculative question

@RоryMcCune well it's not like we don't have bash for windows already
MinGW and Cygwin thingies

@M'vy yeah but this won't need re-compilation for windows
you can literally (by the looks of it) get a linux binary and run it on Ubuntu for windows

my bash script don't
yeah ok ELF support is new

you can also compile ELF binaries using this and then run them on a linux host
@kalina indeed it's not even on the insider channels yet

Yeah, not a valid question. Yet. But still, we get people coming on and asking things within hours of announcements!

8:27 AM
@Matthew, that's basically a good thing.
@kalina, there, have an upvote on your comment :)

@SmokeDispenser I do sometimes wonder if people think that everyone on sec.se just follows new security research tirelessly...
No sleep, no breaks...
Just security

@Matthew was that not in your contract? I'm sure it was in mine :)

@Matthew yes, that.

@RоryMcCune I carefully read my contract and objected to bits of it!

@Matthew see newbie error on my part there, not red-lining the 100% security clause

8:34 AM
@RоryMcCune At one previous job, I didn't actually sign a contract. They were still getting it to a point where I was willing to sign when I found a better job...

I also want to flag the answer as not an answer because it doesn't technically answer the question

@kalina second that.

@kalina Agreed. It's speculation

The answer is better than the question
It's probably he best answer you can have to this question at this moment

that doesn't make it acceptable
the correct answer would have been to not answer
anything other than that is called rep whoring

8:41 AM
The correct answer would have been not to question
you can't blame the guy for trying to answer :)

you can, he has enough rep to close vote and delete vote
he chose to attempt to collect upvotes instead

maybe he did VtC too

I can't see close votes due to being a noob

I can see two

One VtC is me

8:42 AM
Well ok so he did not

blows the anonymity out of the window

that's what DMZ is for :)

I also VtC

Q: Incident Response Reporting to customers, news, market

mau5Good day folks, I want to study more about what to do after detecting incident, breach, provide what information to marketing team, customers, journalists and put what kind of information to announce on the news. Could someone give me resources to read, and point out what to study? I'm not qui...

I know, am being very free with my close votes today...

once upon a time I used to use all of my post votes, close votes, delete votes and flags every day on arqade
and then they got arsy because they didn't like handling that many flags
so I withdrew all of my activity

@kalina they "got" ?

8:46 AM
Were there really that many bad posts on there?

@Matthew arqade is... special

@Matthew well, I'll go with me having a 99%+ flag acceptance rate and then not comment further

@Matthew man what ez da cheat code for crash bandacoot
damn it i killed the chat again :L

nope
I'm still here

Still alive

8:50 AM
just don't really have much to say today

@M'vy this was a triumph!

@RоryMcCune indeed

@kalina well you can survive fire and brimstone, im sure you can survive my posts :P how are you today a busy bee?

@kalina not even about Microsoft's new bot framework?
or the cool Hololens stuff from the keynote

8:51 AM
@kalina or how once everyone get an AR headset you'll be able to do sets from your home

@RоryMcCune Stop making a note here...

@RоryMcCune that removes half of the atmosphere
@silverpenguin no today I'm completely dysfunctional and largely unhappy
@RоryMcCune meh

@kalina whats wrong :(

@JourneymanGeek har har, :/
no, this is the opposite of most days

ahh
actually that way

8:54 AM
I'm unsure what you're insinuating

Oh, that what I said was probably entirely inappropriate and I'm sorry you're that way.

im really REALLY hungry .... any midlanders wana grab some lunch ? D:

Adi
@kalina Whoooaa!
This doesn't answer the question and instead just speculates. I know it's not your fault since speculation is all that is available at this time but it hardly falls into the category of authoritative answers backed by fact. — kalina 17 mins ago

Have a conference call. They've not given me a code to join in. I feel unwanted...

@Matthew please enter your room code followed by the hash key ?

8:58 AM
@Adi what have I done wrong to you now?

@kalina I think he expresses surprise and admiration

Adi
@kalina You're not capable of wronging me. Also, it's quite the opposite, as @M'vy said

@M'vy that's unlikely, Adi said it
well, I guess pigs can fly.

@silverpenguin thats the one
