Hi, I have EOS(Elementary OS) installed on laptop. EOS is ubuntu 14.04 based. I don't wish to install Kali due to lack of driver support.

Will it be totally fine to use EOS, install hacking tools manually when I need them. Say Aircrack-ng
?
Or I need to switch to Kali?
01:43
you should be fine
never used it myself but it's supposedly compatible with Ubuntu and it's possible to add all Kali tools to Ubuntu as far as I'm aware

Q: How can I deal with troublesome "professional" engineer?

JessI currently manage a team of about 25 engineers and developers in a subdivision of a Canadian tech company working out of Ottawa. Things normally run smoothly, but we've had a serious problem with a senior engineer as of late. This engineer is the sole engineer on our team with his Professional ...

Found this on the super collider. Not paying your talent usually bites you big time
But I disagree with the way he's going about it
03:21
top answer is fair tho
makes me wonder what that "troublesome" person is even doing in a company like that, even the one asking the question is quite obviously incompetent yet he manages a team of 25 engineers?
apparently he didn't even know what Professional Engineer means and added professional in quotes at first LOL
> In Canada the designation "professional engineer" can only be used by licensed engineers and the practice of engineering is protected in law and strictly enforced in all provinces. The regulation and licensing of engineers are accomplished through a self-governing body that is given the power to license and discipline professional engineers, as well as regulate the practice of the professional engineers in their province. A self-governing body's prime purpose is to protect the public...
03:49
Can someone else please reject this suggested edit, it's probably hard to spot where the problem with it is (see my rejection reason) security.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/71176
04:48
@TildalWave I, on the other hand, am a "professional" "engineer"
I can "build" "bridges" that "won't fall down"
04:59
"duh!"
@TildalWave Are you still here?
05:18
@TildalWave done
@TildalWave He's probably interviewing.
We have bots smoke detector and community?
WOW
06:19
hello gents
@TerryChia @JourneymanGeek when are we meeting up again for lunch

1 hour later…
07:35
Morning once again
@RoryAlsop Good morning doctor, how are we today?
Not bad at all, oh psychopathic llama
@RoryAlsop what's for breakfast?
Morning everyone!
@LucasKauffman hands
or failing that, bacon, sausage, black pudding and a tattle scone
08:10
heya
strange pop up today heh?
coffee
Mmmm bacon
Morning
mornin' All
@kalina of course, can't you :op

08:33
Morning to each and everyone of you special snowflakes
Adi
Adi
Any people from Netherlands here?
@ColinCassidy mornin'
Adi
Adi
and, morning!
@Adi isn't @Arperum from that general vicinity?
Adi
Adi
@RоryMcCune I think he's from the same place as Lucas
08:35
@Adi so he's a llama too! they get everywhere these days
@RоryMcCune I'm from one country south, but regularly end up north.
Adi
Adi
@Arperum Any idea what kind of company this is? 2staff.nl/contact.html
Are they like a resourcing agency?
Google Translate is failing me
At least they seem so
@Adi Resourcing specialists. So it sounds like they are doing consultancy with their people all being highly trained.
Adi
Adi
I was offered a position with an unbelievable salary by a company in Netherlands, but they made it clear I won't be hired by them but by this 2staff.nl
I've never seen such model before, so I'm a bit suspicious
Morning
Adi
Adi
08:42
Mewrning
murrrrrning
@Adi That position offering might be some recruiter/headhunter. We have a lot of those. So I assume it's the same north of the border.
@Adi In the UK there's a lot of contractors who work that way. they have a contract with an agency/umbrella company and the agency gets money from the actual customer
@Adi tends to be shorter-term work but better paying
morning
kind of a middle ground between permies and consultants
Adi
Adi
08:43
@RоryMcCune Oooooh
Yeah that makes sense
Since the job is only for a few months
permies? sounds like hair implants :)
@RоryMcCune Yea, same over here. that way, the company needing someone doesn't have to deal with the whole hassle of having to find more work for you once their project is done.
@Adi I did it for a while, on 3 month rolling contracts. Downsides are in the UK you get no holiday/sick pay as you run your own company and the contracts can vanish off at the end of the period
@Adi that said in the UK banks there's contractors who've been there for aaages
@MarkBuffalo cheers!
@TildalWave lol it was a vaguely pejorative term that contractors applies to permanent staff
08:46
morning everyone!
@RоryMcCune Except in this case he wouldn't be running his own company, he'd be working for 2staff.nl, who would contract him out to whoever needed him.
@Arperum yeah that sounds more like the umbrella company model in the UK
which model gets more use tends to depend on the tax laws
Adi
Adi
@RоryM @Arperum Thank you guys. Now I have a much clearer picture
here the inland revenue keep mucking about with the tax laws for this kind of employee
@Adi You're welcome. If you end up taking the offer, let me know, we should meet up at some point :)
Adi
Adi
08:47
That sounds like a lovely idea
@RоryMcCune yeah I got it, I'm drinking real strong coffee today ... I'll be one hyper permie and that's not Trump's hairstyle I'm referring to :)
I'm pretty sure the amounts of trips to the north I make are only going to increase. With me having a Dutch girlfriend :p
Adi
Adi
Ooooh.. A Dutch girlfriend
@Arperum Admit it, we dutchies have something :P
Adi
Adi
Whenever I hear that I think of Olivia Lonsdale
To me, all Dutch girlfriends are Olivia Lonsdale
08:50
@Lighty You don't. She does.
@Arperum gezellig
@Arperum Might be just the gender altering your interests, but I was referring to general dutchies, not me
I'm not your type hun
als je een beetje wil chillen...
@LucasKauffman Samen pientje? ;D
08:52
@Lighty pintje :P
or more "pinke" as we say in my local dialect
@LucasKauffman Pientje is a dialect slang for something else than a beer...
@Lighty what is it :O
@LucasKauffman what are the Dutch well known for? :P
@Lighty klompen, tulpen, kaas
Wiet
08:54
@Adi needs ear bleach now
ah
@Lighty druuuuuugs
a "Pientje" refers to a joint, the kind rolled in either cigarrete paper or longer paper, not a "blunt", wich seems to be cigar paper(?)
Adi
Adi
@Arperum What you need is drank en drugs
@Lighty ladies in the shop windows?
@Adi I don't consume either of these.
08:55
ah de wallen
I went to amsterdam for a buisness meeeting a week ago, and I shit you not, it was raining, and the "ladies of the red district" were outside in their, u, outfit, with nothing but an open raincoat, freezing to death
thats extreme
or exxxtreme
of course Denmark used to be famous for its porn industry and ladies of leisure, but most of you would be too young to remember that
I liked Amsterdam. Very friendly people. Even lots of young women waving from their very small houses and smiling.
@TildalWave back when condoms were non existant
@Matthew inviting you inside
09:03
@LucasKauffman oh they existed, just nobody thought they need them
@Lighty it's to attract necrophiles, "extra cold"
@LucasKauffman no idea if well-made joke or disgusting idea
@Lighty I've read stories about actual necrophiles asking the girl to be as cold as possible.
@Arperum Please don't share your life story again, I still have nightmares from the last time ;~;
@Lighty This has nothing to do about my personal life story. This is just an article I've read.
09:15
@Arperum yeah right xd
@Lighty I'm very much not a necrophiliac.
@Arperum This is the Internet, for all I know, everyone could be a necrophiliac, a murderer, a woman, or a P90 Apache Attack Toaster.
@Lighty Of all these options I'd prefer to be a woman. Although, as long as murderer is only aimed at having murdered other humans, having killed animals would make me a murderer if it didn't.
@Arperum you kill animals?
As in: creepy guy killing and torturing animals
or as in: Im hungry, let me get a chicken
@LucasKauffman No torturing.
@LucasKauffman For food yes :p
And not random animals. Growing up on a farm gives you some options for ending up with a dead animal in your hands.
09:25
I was thought serveral "lines", like, quotes
and a random jamaican that worked at my dads company (wich ive known for literally all my life) told me
"Do not kill what you do not eat"
you guys miss me?

Q: "Is (x) Secure" Question Anti-Pattern

Rоry McCuneA common problem that I see with questions is that they ask something like "Is (x) secure", which to me is an unanswerable question, the same way as asking "is the city north", it has no meaning in an absolute sense and requires context In order for a question to make sense the asker needs to pr...

I don't think that'll be deleted (although I'm not perfect arbiter in that regard)
@BlueBerry-Vignesh4303 I don't think your question falls into that pattern
oh thats great then :)
you've explained what you're trying to do and what the issue is
10:11
yep
i wish to learn about ctf what would be my starting point?
@XTImpossible hello :)
what's a drive-by download?
a @BlueBerry-Vignesh4303 comes in and everyones like WOOO but a manatee comes in and the room is dryer than a nun... my feelings are only hurt
@silverpenguin WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU
@silverpenguin Maybe its because you keep saying things like that
there is a very big different between toeing the line, and leapfrogging all over it.
Or just ignoring it altogether and blasting right past it.
Either way, you really need to start thinking about these things.
@silverpenguin arent u the author of google penguin :)
and yes, I am not completly innocent either, but I do try to stay just this side of tasteful.
atfirst while i seen name of u the name,i just googled about u
@XTImpossible it's when someone drives over to your house to download a file 'cause their broadband is too slow/out of action* (*this isn't true)
10:16
Well, I learned a new thing.
@RоryMcCune lol
actually I'd say it's where you visit a site and a download gets initiated by some malicious content (e.g. compromised ad network)
how does the code look like?
I heard something about iframes and javascript?
@AviD sorry I seem to keep offending you the most... I do not mean to I did not think it was that bad. sorry, clearly my humour needs a bit more of a notch down. I would delete my comment but it seems i am unable to?
@BlueBerry-Vignesh4303 nope sorry xD im not that well known! :< but penguins are cool
@XTImpossible it's very dependent on the attack. If you look at most modern websites, they load up content from a variety of locations, all it takes is for one of those to be malicious and they can initiate a download. Exact details would be specific to the attack, but I'd expect you can find them on some of the research blogs that look at this kind of stuff.
10:19
Thanks.
@silverpenguin nah I'm not the one being offended here, that does not happen easily. But some of the things you say are objectively offensive, and should never be uttered in any form of social setting.
Unless you're running for political office, I guess.
@AviD i will try and keep it down a cooler level :)
Thank you.
@AviD why is your picture of tiger btw?
10:24
I know that sometimes the line does seem rather fuzzy, as we here tend to be rather raunchy compared to some places. Still, there are things that are questionable, and then there are things that are definitely far out of bounds.
@silverpenguin don't say anything I wouldn't say and you'd be fine.
Especially this week
Common sense is your friend here; if you're not sure, think about saying these things to your mother. Or your future mother-in-law.
@silverpenguin what @JourneymanGeek said.
And that the chat transcript is google indexed and public
@AviD heh, In india this week
attempting to sort out some family issues. Quite a yarn but not quite something I can discuss on chat
see ^? soemtimes there are things best kept to yourself. ;-)
@AviD I honestly have trouble telling the difference in that line, normally in chat rooms i keep my business face on. I just feel like everyone here is more relaxed and the humour i see here i cannot tell much difference between the line (honestly im socially retarded)
10:27
also, my gran's GSD is an adorable furball who keeps trying to lick my face.
@silverpenguin you're right about that, in general definitely much more relaxed in here. It's things like e.g. violence against women that will get flagged.
German Shepard Dog
(not just that, but that will give you an idea)
He's a 8 month old puppy who keeps trying to randomly lick my face.
10:29
also while euphemisms are acceptable, even recommended here, being overtly explicit is not. Its just not in good taste.
(no that last is NOT a euphemism).
I love german shep puppies e_e
and just a tip, "socially retarded" is not a viable excuse. here, and in life in general.
@silverpenguin this started off as a TINY fuzzball
im pulling the autism card
@JourneymanGeek any pictures e_e
@silverpenguin meh. Don't
10:31
e_e
@JourneymanGeek show me the puppy e_e
@silverpenguin Yea, don't keep pulling that card. You have to live with it either way. By now we know, and blaming everything you do on autism makes it look like an excuse.
@silverpenguin What about asking nicely?
@JourneymanGeek please e_e
@silverpenguin trying to get it out of my phone
Please stand by while I attempt to beat my phone with a wrench
@silverpenguin ^
@Arperum i dont blame everything i do, im just trying to say if i miss understand the social line of talking, please cut me some slack. i would have miss read the room :) thats all, not trying to get away with anything, im just trying to learn and need to learn different :) to truly want to learn and better ones self, one must first accept his weakness and acknowledge them more than his strengths. to play the card i expect no special treatment just understanding and guidence :)
@JourneymanGeek that pup is awesome, does he want cuddles? e_e
yup
Also licks my face at least twice a day
10:39
@JourneymanGeek where does this pup live i wish to cuddle him e_e
(My ava is my elderly terrier)
@silverpenguin in my granma's place in india
@JourneymanGeek that might be a bit far for puppy cuddles
@JourneymanGeek I assume that means you are not in india? may i ask where you are from? I am from the UK :)
Singapore
@silverpenguin I understand your position pretty much perfectly. One thing that helps a lot to learn how to social in a certain group is staying on the background for some time. Watch and learn. And if you don't know if it will be acceptable or not, it's probably not.
yup
I lurk a lot
then I end up taking over the place becoming a mod ;p
10:43
@JourneymanGeek soon i will be a mod and people will fear my power.
@silverpenguin One needs awesome social skills to be a mod
@Arperum yes you are right.
@JourneymanGeek I question this greatly
@silverpenguin might I suggest that insinuating that @AviD has poor social skills is one of those things you should be avoiding?
@RоryMcCune D: i didnt insinuate this D:
putting words into my text box D:
@silverpenguin you questioned @JourneymanGeek 's suggestion that mods need good social skills, implying that you thought they did not have good social skills...
10:46
@silverpenguin as former oper on two irc servers, ex mod (pro tem) on SR.SE, and current SU mod.... so totally need social skills to be a mod ;)
the bit about it being specifically @AviD I did make up
And if you think about it, online socialisation is something you can simply break down into a set of rules
@RоryMcCune D: I was just saying i dont think you need it D:
@silverpenguin being a mod means handing people quite a lot
Actually SE is unusual in having mod tasks that are formalised
you wouldnt think I was a front facing techie would you lol :3 and @JourneymanGeek really they have a list of tasks?
10:50
Well, that's what a flag is, essentially
@JourneymanGeek oh i thought you meant something else, like mods must brush their teeth once a day before humming the SE theme tune
Ok, that's just strange. Why would we have a theme tune, and I brush my canines twice a day.
@JourneymanGeek you actually brush your dogs teeth? If there is no theme tune maybe one should be made, everything needs a theme tune
@silverpenguin there's dog toothpaste yanno.
You didn't get the invite to mod school? It comes by DNS requests to a server you control, and they ramp up the frequency if you don't reply. Used to be owls, but they were too messy
10:53
(We do actually brush Ash's teeth daily)
@JourneymanGeek D: but you shouldnt brush a dogs teeth though D: the bacteria in their mouths is important, hard treats should be used for tartar build up and other such tooth nasties
Adi
Adi
@DavidFreitag Do any of these mean something to you? "JTAG manipulation, testing over USB, making microcontrollers do stuff they're not supposed to do, extracting info and/or firmware from interfaces"
@Adi Jtag is just a serial connection
im using one right now
Adi
Adi
@silverpenguin I know what is
@Adi sorry i misunderstood context
Adi
Adi
10:55
I'm trying to see David's thoughts on these things since there are some employment opportunities in these areas.
@Adi ahh i see, I just thought you needed some technical help was going to offer :) sorry to interupt your discussion
@silverpenguin vet's advice
@JourneymanGeek ohh i see does he have some major dental issues? :< poor doggie
yeah, gingivitis, and most of his lower front teeth are gone
T_T NO poor dog
Microsoft has produced a version of its database software that runs on the rival Linux operating system.
why did i think tags would work i dont know
11:06
<tag:work>
There is a way to do it, but I can never remember what it is...#
ponders hmm
@silverpenguin are saying they will release
2017 apprently
Big question for (most folks) is if there'll be an express edition and/or how it compares pricewise to running it on windows, and feature parity
IMO
also, 'has produced' - is a bit wierd with MS cause they've had lots of wierd skunkworks things in the past
NT on PPC for example
I suppose i am missing the technically benefits of more Microsoft SQL over to a linux platform ? I mean yea some people will use it but if anyone wanted to use it they would have used windows surely?
11:12
@silverpenguin there's some handy things with MS SQL
iirc we used it for database forensics classes cause we could use triggers to keep an eye on transactions
this is a real long term move, but they risk losing a large portion of cash in the short term. @JourneymanGeek im sure you can do that in MySQL can you not?
or quite simply, your software runs on it, and you want to scale without worrying about OS licences. Of course you need to worry about db licences
If people are still running Win 2k3 due to windows server licence costs, might be worth moving to MSSQL on Linux, I suppose...
@silverpenguin for some reason we did not.
@Matthew assuming its cheaper
@JourneymanGeek you are a computer forensics? @Matthew you make a good point
11:14
if you're running a seperate db server it might make sense too
@JourneymanGeek Well, yes. I just see far too many Win 2k3 servers still around...
true, might have to look into it when it comes out just for curiousity
@silverpenguin Its part of one of my majors.
@Matthew if it ain't broke...
tho part of it is technical debt and kludges.
but this is why I try to run stuff I cannot live without in VMs
you guys think it would be possible to have a small bios which decrypts a larger bios? (sorry to change topic)
and ought to snapshot before a major upgrade
@silverpenguin why?
all the bios/firmware needs to do is to get a system to a state where it can boot up the OS
Un-needed complexity is bad
11:18
@JourneymanGeek well forensics wise you can do alot of things without loading the main os, for example if my mac had soldered on drives to the board you would need to back it up using a live disk of some sort
but what if the usb wouldnt connect untill after the bios was decrypted
if you catch my drift
@JourneymanGeek do you get what i mean? or am i just speaking out my backside
No system is designed to make forensics easy
easy forensics can mean poor security :)
@JourneymanGeek The problem is generally that Win 2k3 is broke!
@JourneymanGeek I was actually talking more about making modern forensics harder ;)
Can I just scream about a contractor I'm dealing with at the moment
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!‌!!!
go for it @Matthew let it all out
11:24
Thank you
@Matthew do you need cuddles? @JourneymanGeek can lend you a puppy
@Matthew what is your contractor doing ? :P
They run an API. There are loads of functions in this. I care about one of these, because it is security flaw, which has been acknowledged. They have just said "oh, look, it's fine, no-one is using it", attaching a report showing that no-one is using a different function, that doesn't have a security flaw in...
@Matthew hahaha I know that feeling lol!! you are a backend developer? or an app?
@silverpenguin Security tester, working on a project that happens to use this broken API call...
@Matthew ahhh jelous :< you are in my dream job
opps wrong screen
@Matthew long shot but are you any good with linux?
11:38
@silverpenguin I do some bits
@Matthew ahh nvm :< im struggling with a massive boot delay and my charts are leaving me confused and baffled with the start up processes. this is the hardest task i have ever done with linux...so little information
@silverpenguin I'd suggest doing a verbose boot, and watching to see where it is being slow - usually turns out to be a specific step that's causing the problems
@Matthew yea im doing that right now and reading through the dmesg but there is just a 150 second gap of no messages or logs or anything.
@silverpenguin What's the line before that?
@Matthew its a disk check, but looking at this new chart software i have its showing me there is a massive sleep, this sleep is a stupid size but other processes seem to be running at the same time...but either way where the hell is this sleep T__T
12:16
I spy with my little eye 2 nurdz having a discussion
@Simon !!! I missed you, want to play bop it?
twist it, pull it, bop it
NO
NONE OF THIS
:< but bop it
at work @Simon ?
Yup.
@Simon same, being on this chat screen makes it look like i do more work, normally i just read the news
12:20
Porsche (owned by VW) suspends sponsorship of Maria Sharapova. Clearly doesn't want to be associated with someone accused of cheating. Oh.
lolz
@RоryMcCune I know i read this, this moring but i couldnt find what she had taken im guessing steroids?
@RоryMcCune i jus tmissed the joke... i got it now...slow day
@RоryMcCune She cheated?
IS SHE ON DRUUUUUUUGS?!?
she apparently taking a medication that has recently been added to the banned list
it sounds like a pretty minor infraction to be honest
but everyone is super-sensitive to this at the moment
@Simon yes she failed a drug test @RоryMcCune if this is true i feel as if thats unfair
They're all a bunch of donuts fucking up their health to perform better.

Some caffeine shampoo warns that it can be detected in drug tests
... caffeine shampoo?
@Matthew some people warn you to keep away from poppy seed also
@Matthew caffeinated shampoo... that just sounds like a bad idea
12:24
@Simon keeps your hair looking young and fresh
You're very flamboyant today.
@Simon i have solved a problem that has been bugging me for days :D
I was 5 hours away from failing my first ever task at this job in 2 years but i solved it
super good mood (waits for someone to take my cookie)
@silverpenguin Well done.
