20:00
Ah, so i just learned that i got sucked into a board meeting tomorrow... Hopefully if i show off infront of them they'll just give me the raise.
@AviD Eh?
Eww 9am? I'm not even usually out of bed by then.
@ScottPack nothing really.... sad state of higher education.
@AviD Yeah, way too expensive.
@AviD Tuition at my shitty alma is about twice what it was back in 2004.
Wife has 2 degrees; one from a state university, one from a community college. Guess which ones earns her an actual salary.
20:03
Clearly the Art History degree.
@ScottPack not far off: Psychology
@AviD I dunno. I never realized there was a difference between chewing & dipping, let alone why they call it dipping in the first place.
@tylerl Yeah, that one's hard to work directly unless you continue on to graduate school.
@ScottPack even if you go to graduate school, it's the 3rd lowest earning degree overall.
and also the single most popular
@tylerl Seriously? Wow.
I can see psychology being useful context for a lot of other programs (like marketing) but by itself. Yeah, rough.
20:07
US census recently started asking people what degree they got if any, so now the data actually exists
NPR. Y U NO TRANSCRIPT
Sorry; thing it might be 3rd most popular, single lowest earning.
I can make 100k in the US with a major in CS?
what
@tylerl Seems everyone I know who's in college is majoring in Psych, or has in the past - even the IT folk.
20:12
@tylerl is this ever, or right out of college?
that's lifetime average
@LucasKauffman Can and will are very different things.
ah.
@tylerl ah lifetime average then it's ok
That's a scary low lifetime average
20:12
@LucasKauffman so you can make that even without the major...
'Course since it's so hugely popular there's probably a significant percentage of people who got the degree, but never actually pursued the career, that are throwing off the average.
@LucasKauffman It also depends highly on where you are. The SF area, for example, will easily net you well above that. It's also fucking redonculously expensive to live there.
security, in my limited experience, would average a lot higher than that
Though from the NPR program, if you major in any petroleum engineering program, you'll probably be recruited before you graduate at a salary over $100k starting
@RoryAlsop give me something to expect in 10 years
20:13
PS - good evening lovely people
@RoryAlsop what about @Simon???
@Lucas - that top figure is doable in ten years
@avid - maybe not Simon
@LucasKauffman The cost of living is about double there what it is here. Housing is probably 4-5 times higher.
but the tips will be good
@RoryAlsop 100k would be nice
20:14
@RoryAlsop So you want just the tip?
and I'm thinking pounds, not dollars
Hahahaha @scott
@RoryAlsop getting better.
@RoryAlsop I've noticed that UK salaries are substantially lower than US salaries, or so it seemed.
@LucasKauffman Housing really is the biggest part, too. The house I paid 170k USD for here is pretty equivalent to a house I know of just outside of Edinburgh that was about 500k GBP.
@ScottPack Location, location, location. And a nice view.
20:17
@AviD Their view was slightly better, but yeah. All together pretty equivalent.
I'd like to buy a house in 3 years
I should make about half more what I'm making now
a decent house will set me back about 300k
@RoryAlsop never thought about buying a castle?
@avid - not as far as I have seen:-)
@LucasKauffman The house I bought 2 years ago now would cost about 2x what I paid. Probably a special case, but an interesting datapoint
@Lucas - always. I even have my features shortlist ( including number of crenellations, depth of moat, number of sharks etc)
Nearly bought one once, but the upkeep would have bankrupted me
@RoryAlsop I can also find some here in Belgium, but it's a nightmare to maintain them as you are not allowed to change anything on them because they are considered "cultural heritage"
20:23
Yeah, this one was £1 to buy and £1M a year estimated upkeep
@RoryAlsop hmm, curious.
@RoryAlsop Don't forget about the death taxes.
Death taxes? Lawyers minimise that kind of nonsense
:%s/minimise/minimize/
@RoryAlsop Nonsense?? Everyone needs to bear their fair share of deaths!
20:32
I was only expecting to go through it once. Is my fair share.
well, once a millennium
there can be only one.
@Scott - z is not s.
@RoryAlsop Clearly Merkin is your native language.
are you implying I am a cunning linguist?
20:42
I just had a chilling thought ... what would happen to the Internet if the Great Firewall of China came crashing down?
@RoryAlsop hehehe nice
@TildalWave Global VPN usage would drop.
Hey why do I... oh well I have a silly avatar
@AntonyVennard oh was gonna ask
@AntonyVennard who the f* are you? :D :D
@AviD I changed my email, that's why. No GRRRRR avatar
ah that'd explain it
20:44
ohhh
I'll fix that when I can be bothered
I actually posted an answer today. First time in months
it's OK but ... pink? really?
@AntonyVennard TWSS
@TildalWave TWSS, too
@TildalWave What's wrong with pink?
20:46
it's not the 80's anymore, yknow.
Or the 90's, if you live here.
OK I guess I'm 80s paranoid then
@AviD I don't remember the 80s. However, anecdotal evidence suggests hair styles were terrible and my not remembering may be a good thing.
there were some good parts of the 80s, but hair was not one of them.
@TildalWave Save the ta-tas!
Nobody that was alive in the 80's remembers anything from then
20:49
@TildalWave actually I do have some bits and flashes.
Please... don't remind me OK? It's ... embarassing
haha
More so over here. Dont forget, we had it delayed by half a decade.
think of all the money that went into therapies and such
@TildalWave Yeah but my maximum age during the 80s was 2, so, a) I don't remember anything because of biology and b) legally, I was not responsible for anything that happened during that period.
Morning, ladies
20:51
I was 16 when the era ended ... by calendar, I'd say it lasted a few more years in reality tho
@Adnan you stud! :)
@AntonyVennard whoa, you're younger than I thought. And here your posts sound like a grownup.
@AviD Blame that on spellcheck!
Really I'm just writing with a crayon on a graphics tablet.
hahaha
@TildalWave How is it going around here?
@Antony What the hell happened to you?
@Adnan He went pink!
20:53
@TildalWave Don't they all?
@Adnan I haven't a clue really ... I just joined in
Oh noes they just imply innuendo in other chat rooms and flags start flying... since I'm a smurf I really started hating some SE chat rooms ... what a bunch of p***sies
@Adnan Stackexchange hashed my new email and decided this was "pink".
@Iszi Dunno, with the noughties everyone was eager they end ASAP
@tildal - I remember the eighties very well. And the seventies
@TildalWave Wow. How is it this is the first time I've ever heard anyone call them that?! Brilliant!
20:58
@Iszi @TildalWave ditto. I approve this.
@RoryAlsop well you were by then prolly on memory boosters already :P we were on the opposite :)
hair was bad then, but I an fervently anti-fashion so what do I know
I was a punk rocker anyway so what did I care?
my biggest badge on my jacket was GBH
just for the kicks if anyone asked what that meant
I was a hippy and a punk and a rocker and a metal head
@AntonyVennard But you had a different avatar, a better one.
21:01
still a bit of all of them. I don't have a Mohawk any more, but I do still like wearing leather and chains to the ballet
@RoryAlsop you had quite a selection of women to choose from then :)
@Adnan yeah but new email doesn't have gravatar. I am intending to fix this.
But, my picture... it's not such a biggie.
Maybe I'll fix it with a PINK avatar.
@AntonyVennard Doesn't matter, you can use imgur
@Adnan ohyeah!
@AntonyVennard Hover over your picture in your profile and 'change picture' and upload one from there.
Quite nice. I think SE started using it a few months ago
21:03
@tildal - you know about Orkney then?
@RoryAlsop tomb of the eagles?
@Adnan Yeah I remember reading the announcement
I am now fixed.
That is there, sure, but not a good place to pick up girls...
Hmmm then no I dunno anything else abut the island, why? What was going on there?
ah I get it... I think
> Horny Doggers love Orkney Dogging as it has numerous secret UK Dogging sites with some are so secret only a select few Dogging fans know about them.
this?
21:19
Horny diggers? Eh wut?
Hahahahaha 10/10 @tildal. Does that make me a saddo?
@RoryAlsop by that logic, your score comes out as 1 so there's your answer in boolean :P
I don't get a few of them I admit ... some are funny tho
purple grape is about commutativity?
Google purple grape:-)
catering?
Sorry, Google abelian:-)
Lost. Too tired to care.
21:35
@RoryAlsop yes... commutativity then... OK I scored 8/10 without counting that one, so 9/10 because I did get it, sort of :P
ahh, didnt get that this was about the math quiz.
hehehe you need some rest man ;)
OK I figured it out which one I got wrong ... the last one ... I was sure it's the “Goethe wrote Faust and Joyce wrote Ulysses!”
My fav was: What does the "B" in Benoit B Mandelbrot stand for? Perhaps a bit too obvious but still rather funny :)
21:52
@RoryAlsop HEY!!!!!!
@DavidFreitag So, you work during the day and go to school during the evening? Ewwww.
22:44
@Simon Yes, it's called "ambition" or "work ethic." I don't know that the concept has been introduced to Canada yet.
@Xander -.-
I'm gonna write a script that will steal all your first post reviews.
@Simon LOL! Well played sir.
23:00
;)
