@Gilles he says that just saying to your customers "don't send me a cc in an email" is enough the problem is you will still need to be PCI compliant of you retain that email
@tylerl secure wipe, which is easier said than done
Especially outlook
@LucasKauffman yeah... selectively secure wipe specific email messages which, it must be noted, are of no real security risk to you at all, while not accidentally destroying your whole mailbox .. all for the purpose of ... of... wait, why are we doing this again?

1 hour later…
07:01
@Adnan those are interesting, but mostly seem to be outside of cambridge itself.. there's tripadvisor.co.uk/… which has some interesting things in cambridge, I'm definitely planning to go see the centre for computing history when I'm there :)
07:22
@tylerl PCI-DSS the thing is that if you leak it you are responsible
@tylerl Card companies aren't charity organizations
@Adnan I have posted up a comment on Duxford Imperial War Museum, which is epic. If you have never seen an SR-71 Blackbird, or a B-52 you need to go.
@RоryMcCune Oh wow. That's much better. Given that I don't have a car, that's more suitable for me.
@RoryAlsop Hmm... it's a one-hour bike trip away... intriguing
@RoryAlsop you have a blackbird in the UK?
@Lighty It's funny how surprised and shocked Merekel was when the new surfaced about tapping her.
Then again, it's RT
Fuck RT
07:37
RT is a bit biased
its been on the new here too, but the RT claims things i dont see anywhre else
@LucasKauffman AAA bit?
someone send me that article, i normally steer clear of any news containing russian influences
morning ladies
Snowden is still in Moscow, right?
07:48
@LucasKauffman yep, and it is lovely
@Rory Any intel on Innis & Gunn?
Is it possible to visit the brewery?
@RoryAlsop since you saw it up close, did you by chance notice how its airframe is assembled to actually leak fuel while on the ground because its materials thermally expand in the air?
@TildalWave I touched it and I can confirm it feels oily, and constantly leaks even now
6
It's a pity you cant touch the B-52 or the A-10 (they are suspended from the ceiling)
@RoryAlsop cue TWSS's :))
some of my pics from last time I went
@TildalWave no stars yet, which is surprising
07:54
@RoryAlsop there :)
WHY WITH THE ROADWORKS WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
how in hell do they get those birds to hang off the ceiling?
@kalina because Britain
@TildalWave wires
:-)
@RoryAlsop Bird on a Wire ....
WHY WITH THE DRILLING AND THE NOISES AND THE GENERAL INCOMPETENCE
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
07:55
@kalina BECAUSE REASONS.
I still remember Goldie's panties from that movie :)))
@TildalWave erm
@FEichinger ERM
@kalina is that what they are calling techno these days?
... @Tildal talks about panties and I get the bigger "erm"?
@kalina hey, I might be old, but I do remember things worth remembering :P
they were red thongs
07:57
@RoryAlsop no that's EDM or someshit
@TildalWave no doubt you've got the scene from basic instinct firmly burned into your memory as well
@kalina never watched it, if you can believe it
it's about a woman who kills the people she sleeps with
it hit pretty close to home
so a black widow ...
no need to get racist
bored
08:00
bored
@kalina GEE, I WONDER WHY >.>
@FEichinger don't worry, you will look like a suicide
@Adnan oh maaaaan not you too
I'll cover the walls of your room with PHP bug reports with "WHYYYYYYYYY" scraled all over them and make it really clear you had been working on a big project and the quirks and inadequaces of using PHP simply drove you over the edge
2
@kalina Why, thanks. That makes me feel so much better about it!
08:02
@kalina Will it be like suicide in politically-troubled countries?
> A high ranking official committed suicide with 3 bullets in the head
@Adnan nice
first two must have missed everything important or bounced off bone
obviously
Doesn't "bored" also mean being repeatedly drilled?
2
to form a bore
what a borehole!
I understand how you're coming to that conclusion however
in the event (because I haven't checked)
surely bored would mean "has been through the boring process"
o/ everyone
o/ @kalina
08:05
a wild @Manish appears
TIL @kalina is not included in "everyone".
see, I'm so special I get my own hello
\o/ @Manish
@kalina the boring drill?
@FEichinger exactly :p
inb4 @fei
@TildalWave so boring
08:06
@Adnan isn't part of everyone either, but he doesn't deserve an o/ :p
@kalina Soo ... you came first? Great!
The dictionary seems to agree thefreedictionary.com/boring
> Boring: noun The act or process of making or enlarging a hole
4
@FEichinger only in a parallel universe
I enjoy the process of making or enlarging holes
3
Being bored is my favourite thing.
It's no good, I need breakfast, bbiab
@Kisu Wanna get bored tonight?
@kalina Tsk, tsk, tsk!
08:12
@Adnan Yes. Multiple times, preferably. We have all night.
@Kisunminttu Umm... I was talking about sitting in the living room doing nothing for a few hours
One of my favourite kinds of boring is boring while waiting for something boring to finish.
@Adnan Ummm... What did you think I was talking about?
@kalina Which, I assume in your case, would be the boring.
@Adnan We will eventually do something not boring until getting bored again
08:14
@Adnan actually I had specific things in mind, like waiting for a cake to bake, or for food to roast, or movies to download, etc
@kalina Yeah, you missed it.
Explicitly stating it would likely cause a ban, so I'll... yeah.
fine
Sex. He's talking about sex.
3
@Kisu Dear god! I haven't prepared my bag yet. I'm feeling like such a @Kisu right now
@Adnan :| the worst part is that that is true.
@Adnan I'm looking at crime statistics in Finland based on country of origin of the perp
08:21
@Kisunminttu Oh yeah, they released some new stats last week
Link moi
@Adnan It's a search tool I'm using
@Kisunminttu Well, link me
@Kisunminttu Oh.. still doesn't have the stats that was released last week.. sucks
@Adnan I'm showing a classmate of mine that the most foreigner crimes in Finland are committed by Russians and Estonians, not people from Africa...
08:29
@Kisunminttu and Russians are the biggest welfare leechers
@Adnan Sauce?
Russia: Will take your land, then send its citizens to the parts they didn't take to harvest your social benefits.
@Kisunminttu Hmm... that's gonna be tricky.
@Kisu That "tool" went down :(
@Adnan It's a bit crappy IMHO
I'm being bored again
@Kisunminttu I'm trying to find the number of convinced Syrians.
@kalina I'll actually do some boring in a few minutes.
My gun's screw holes need some expanding
@Kisu 23 convictions between 2005-2009.. not bad.
08:42
@Adnan Not bad at all
I love it that you can select the type of crime and as many countries as you want
@ManishEarth morning stranger!
it makes it easier to compare (though not really comparable because it would need to be put in to percentages etc.)
@Kisunminttu But, heey! We seem to be very underrepresented in the crime stats. Even Canadians have higher convictions
GAAAAHHH, i took 2 asperin's this morning, and my head still hurts like hell >.<
@Kisu We need to work on changing that :D
08:45
@Adnan Holy crap!
@Kisu What the shit?! Sexual intercourse between cousins is illegal in Finland?
@Adnan Yup.
@RoryAlsop 'morning
@Adnan Second cousins is where it's at
@Kisunminttu Hmm... sexual assault section is extremely interesting.
08:48
@ManishEarth how's things? You have been keeping busy?
Yep
Was tussling with thread safety last week
@Adnan Yeah I noticed that, too
@Kisu Finns seem to be the leaders in that.
@Adnan That's true. Africa and Asia come after that, then Russia and Estonia.
08:51
@Kisunminttu Yeah. I didn't find that very surprising, though.
@Kisu Heeey, can you find stats on the number of immigrants from each country?
We can cross-reference both stats and actually get some percentage
@Adnan I bet I can, but for example that tool, it uses Africa and Asia - I don't know if I can find whole continents...
@Kisu Aaaand... wait wait wait.. What do they mean by "Kansalaisuus". I suppose "Finland" also includes people from other countries with Finnish citizenship, no?
@Adnan Nationality. I think they use country of origin in that case.
Tell me if you need help with the Finnish country names
@Kisunminttu I don't think so. I think naturalized citizen are included as Finnish
@Adnan That would skew the statistics. It wouldn't make sense.
08:58
@Kisunminttu Well, how do they assess nationality, then?
What about Somalis born in Finland?
@Adnan I'm asking them
@Kisunminttu Perfect!
@Adnan Then they are included as Finnish, I think, because they are born here.
@ManishEarth Firefox question... how easy /difficult would it be to have a version of Firefox with some of the safety features (e.g. certificate warnings) entirely disabled? AFAIK there's no option for doing it in about:config...
@RоryMcCune should be easy
find the code that does warnings, and whack it with a stick :p
09:00
@Kisunminttu Well, let's wait to hear from them.
/me tries
@RоryMcCune gimme a site with a broken cert
Alternatively, go to the cert-checking c++ and return true;
@ManishEarth are there any guides to compiling custom versions of FFox? (
09:02
@RоryMcCune download, bootstrap, and ./mach build
@RoryM Have you tried the security. section?
developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Simple_Firefox_build
^that
@ManishEarth ta :)
I can probably get you a patch that does this
09:03
@Adnan in about:config, yeah a while back but not recently..
(not get it checked in though)
@Adnan Just sent them a contact request
@ManishEarth nice :) It's a real pain for pen testers 'cause we encounter broken certs alllll the time (internal webservers, test webservers, proxies)
@RоryMcCune note that distributing for Windows is hard. Linux you can just make a dist folder with the binaries, but Fx doesn't do msis anymore
@ManishEarth well linux would be a good start, it's where I mostly test from anyways...
09:04
@RоryMcCune if the pages are mostly javascript, you can addonify it
@RoryM Any reason for not using Chrome? I find the --disable-web-security option very helpful in those cases
@ManishEarth cool!
@Adnan I did not know about that option.. what does it do? General reason for not using chrome is that setting up proxies just for it has traditionally been a pain where FFox has a nice gui for it :)
I hate laptops with a wireless option. It never works when it is supposed to.
so on windows chrome uses the system proxy, which you never want to change to burp 'cause every app sends loads of HTTP req's these days...
on linux IIRC it's environment variables, doable but irritating
@RоryMcCune Hmm.. now that I think about it, I think that option is only for cross-origin stuff. Also, yeah, Firefox is the browser for proxy stuff.
@RоryMcCune For that, I use FoxyProxy on Chrome. FANTASTIC!
It's so nice! You can even define rules to have only specific domains be redirect to Burp
09:09
@Adnan I should have a play with that sounds handy, and would be useful to have multiple browsers on one OS that are easily proxyable..
@Kisunminttu how odd. I like laptops with wireless options because I can specify what I want the interface to do. Maybe it is down to the type of laptop
@RоryMcCune Use ProxySwitchySharp
That way I can switch between proxies/tunnels/direct/etc
@ManishEarth Nyaaaah! FoxyProxy FTW!
Because it comes from Firefox
@RоryMcCune I think if you shut off MOZ_SAFE_BROWSING you'll be fine. Should be a configure option
@Adnan hah
FoxyProxy wasn't made by Mozilla, fwiw
@ManishEarth :|
09:11
(as in, not by its employees)
I mean originally for Firefox
yeah
the creator is awesome though
I agree
He was very nice regarding my bug reports
@RoryAlsop Maybe I'm just not doing it right. I have three wireless options but the laptop is saying that there aren't connections available. When I reboot, it tries to connect to a wireless network that it cannot connect to (which is one of the three wireless options). I figured I need it to "forget" that connection, but it's not on the list. There are no connections on the list >:(
I didn't hesitate throwing a few EURs in his way
@Kisunminttu Just stop messing with it, alright? I told you I'll handle it
09:13
@Adnan if you're looking for something to be doing on the Tuesday .. plus.google.com/events/c03vok8if9gbo4i0j36jdu0b7t8
@Adnan thats right. girls shouldnt be messing around with computers, anyway.
Sorry! I meant "women". Better, you crazy PC crowd?
@AviD I disagree
@Adnan you DO know I was mocking you, right?
@RоryMcCune where is this?
I dont think there is a single person in this room that would agree with that statement. Except maybe @kalina.
09:14
ah, hangout
@ManishEarth OWASP AppsecEU conference in Cambridge
Well, and @Lighty, but I dont count him as persons.
2
@AviD No I don't. I'm telling @Ksu to stop playing with it because that's the laptop I'll be taking to the UK with me
@RоryMcCune so?? totally psyched about it yet??
09:15
@Adnan It's so hard to admit defeat.
@AviD YEAH! We're going and you're not!
Nanananana
@Adnan I knoooooow :-(
@AviD well Maz is merrily worrying about her presentation, but I'm looking forward to 2 days of mobile security training then two days of conf, then two days of wandering Cambridge :)
next year, I am IN
maybe I'll even make it to AppSecNYC this year...
naaaaah
@AviD get yourself voted onto the OWASP board, then you can go for free.....
09:16
@AviD Oh, next year I'm 100% not in. Not doing the UK visa shit again
@RоryMcCune taking or giving?
the training
@RоryMcCune I'm pretty sure all leaders go free, but it's the travel that is the problem for me.
Oh.. I dug myself with that one
otherwise I would have submitted a talk.,..
@AviD taking, we've not done a lot of mobile work, so taking the opp. of a 2-day bootcamp thing that's on as I get it for free..
@AviD pretty sure board get travel paid for
@RоryMcCune oh yeah! very cool :D
@RоryMcCune ohhh, see that's something else altogether.
to all conferences??
aaand they do have elections soon...
09:18
@AviD think so... and there's elections coming up and Tom brennan has said he's not standing again, so at least one spot wide open...
hmm.
@RoryM I'm confused. That even is part of OWASP AppSecEU, no?
Aren't we gonna be busy on Tuesday?
naaaah. No one knows me, I wouldnt have a chance. And anyway I wouldnt have time, as it is the local chapter sucks up any time I might have....
@RoryM The schedule is quite packed appseceurope2014.sched.org
@AviD i love you too, Tigger
09:19
yes it is ProxySwitchySharp
did ProxySwitchySharp just become a meme?
;-)
@AviD Copy-paste fail :(
but yeah, that schedule looks cool.
would have loved to go...
@Adnan conf days are weds/thurs, so other stuff happens mon/tues. For me that's training course, but dev. guide summit is also on tues..
@RоryMcCune :O You're doing the training?
09:21
@AviD well less known people have made it to the board before, + you have a large local chapter who will surely vote for you...
@Adnan taking a course , yep
@RоryMcCune yeah.... except that NONE OF THEM ARE MEMBERS
@RоryMcCune Won the lottery, didn't we?
actually if there was still a Chapter Committee I would have liked to join that.
@Adnan he's a leecher freebie
@adnan I've not done much mobile app (iOS/Android) work, so before I deliver stuff good to do a course. Also I get it for free (OWASP leader perk) so we just have to pay for MAz
@RоryMcCune do all leaders get the training for free too?
09:23
@RоryMcCune brb.. trying to be an OWASP leader
@AviD :OP we're paying for one of us, so it's more like a buy one get one free :op
@AviD max of two slots per course
I thought it was because you organized the conf...
@RоryMcCune per person?
@AviD nah there's two slots per course for any OWASP leader
@RoryM Now I feel stupid for coming 3 days early.
still, very cool - would have loved to do that.
09:23
I'll be in Cambridge on the 22nd
@RоryMcCune ymean there are up to two slots designated for all leaders...?
@Adnan cambridge in June should be lovely :) + as I said other OWASP things happening those days :)
@Adnan go for it! start up a local chapter.
@AviD yeah two slots on each course that is running are available for leaders to claim on a first-come/first-serve basis..
@AviD Wait wait.. so I can just start one?
09:24
ahhh okay now I get it.
@Adnan heh, yeah
@Adnan yes, please do so.
@RoryM @AviD Hmm... intriguing
you would need some traction, local participation, but basically yeah.
@Adnan there's one in Helsinki
there is even some budget to bring in speakers for meetings.
@RоryMcCune Yeah, but I want MINE!
@Adnan so, go for it.
@Adnan are you in Helsinki or elsewhere in Finland, if it's elsewhere you can totally just start your own...
there were a few fellows that decided to start up another chapter in Jerusalem - which is less than an hour away from Tel Aviv (which is the unofficial center of the Israel chapter)....
09:27
@RоryMcCune Nope, a bit far from Helsinki.
publication dupe - I'll let Stack Exchange have it :-)
@Adnan in that case you can just start your own, but worth asking the helsinki people if they can help with start up :)
@AviD ...
@RoryM @AviD Okay then, I have an important question. With a friend, we're running a local meetup group for web dev stuff. Can we have the OWASP chapter alongside that one?
@Adnan its even recommended.
09:28
roryalsop on June 19, 2014

paj28 posed a question that really fits better here as a blog post:

Security Stack Exchange gets a lot of questions about password strength, password best practices, attacks on passwords, and there’s quite a lot for both users and sites to do, to stay in line with “best practice”.

Web sites need a password strength policy, account lockout policy, and secure password storage with a slow, salted hash. Some of these requirements have usability impacts, denial of service risks, and other drawbacks. And it’s generally not possible for users to tell whether a site actually does all this (hence plaintextoffenders.com). …

OWASP is for devs, not secpros.
GOD SO MUCH SPAM
@StackExchange dupe!
heh heh
where is the q for that?
09:30

Q: Should we rethink our entire password strategy?

paj28Passwords get discussed a lot on this site, and there's quite a lot for both users and sites to do, to stay in line with "best practice". cheers
too much words. will read later.
@AviD you been listening to Mr Curphy again ?
@RоryMcCune ha! actually I've said that for years. nice to know that the source material agrees with me.
@AviD amusingly a guy I know worked with Curphy back in the day and tells a story of how he used to turn up to work at a very traditional bank in baggy jumpers that had too long sleeves..
09:33
@AddyShamsham Hi Adnan, we're afraid we can't currently offer brewery tours, but we do host events & tastings at HQ: http://bit.ly/IG-HQEvents
:(
@RоryMcCune heh, sounds like a fun guy to work with.
back at foundstone, or MS?
or dont know wherever else he worked...
@AviD heh yeah an interesting character no doubt.
@AviD nope this is when he was consulting/contracting for a large scottish bank
@RоryMcCune ah, @RoryAlsop style.
@AviD like that but less Royal
lol
so he doesnt seem the type to care what other people consider "proper", but then again he is English.
A conundrum.
09:37
@AviD I'm working on less and less formality in my clothing. I'm not at baggy jumpers stage (as the UK is much too hot for jumpers) but I'm becoming 'actively' scruffy
whattodowhattodowhattodo
@kalina be bored, probably
:-)
@RoryAlsop I still say you should show up to a Board meeting in your finest Doktor Mayhem livery.
you could try responding to all that spam - 419eaters.com have some good guidance
@AviD some day. Some day
Too often, I see SDL documents that are basically "secure coding guidelines" and maybe some generic "Security Best Practices".
Then they dont understand how much work I say needs to go into building SDL right.
09:54
@Jeff you broke it again didn't you?
@LucasKauffman Somebody poke Facebook!
though it seems fine to me...
@AviD It's fluctuating. Was down in Finland about an hour ago
