my teacher and mentor just called a freind and student in ym class, saying he has to redo the year because of 2 simple mistakes, and claims that may be the cause because he sits next to me, and that i am chaotic and all, and that they also talked negatively about me in a conversation about students... ALL BEHIND YM BACK
what a disgrace..
what do i do? tell it, all wiht his childish teaching and bullying to the headmaster, in result that my freind gets screwed by the teacher the coming year(s), or simply swallow it and try to calm down?
@RoryAlsop this sounds like you're asking me to do something and I refuse to on account of my complete disinterest

Q: Running system bash command in PHP script - syntax error: unexpected T_LNUMBER

Hugh - JerseyIf anyone can shed some light on my issue that'd be great. Please don't down-vote me; I'm new to the language and the OS itself and I'm trying my best to research before asking questions, so any positivity is appreciated. Below is an extract from a script that I've written in PHP, but contains a...

how much do you bet that this code is in production somewhere?
@kalina which is why bored, I reckon
@Lighty or, perhaps, Grow up, mature a little bit, and stop being a little shit in class.
@Gilles heh
10:15
@AviD im not a little shit in class, i'm quiet, keep my balls to myself and work, and try not to fall asleep, but i guess you confuse me with some other people in my class though
or your teacher does.
@Gilles that is extremely...messy
im really doubting if i even want him as teacher, he doesnt explain anything, only listens to music, bullies people, and lives in the stoneage of technology
@Lighty you rannnngggg? :-)
Oh - I don't bully people though
hehe
just noticed my teacher is an arsehole version of rory, with extra arse
10:19
Woah, my first Famous Question badge!
@Lighty And I guess I do try and explain things...mostly
@TerryChia well done.
which question?
im going to have a tea, and try not to stress to much about people trying to screw up my future plans

Q: Is there any particular reason to use Diffie-Hellman over RSA for key exchange?

Terry ChiaI often see RSA being recommended as a method of key exchange. However, the Diffie-Hellman key exchange method appears to be secure as well. Is there any considerations one should take into account that would lead to using one algorithm over the other?

I hadn't realized it had that many views.
@TerryChia I think it should be migrated to Crypto.se.
@AviD Go ahead if you feel it's necessary. :)
10:22
heh, nah, working now.
Also, I gave my first lightning talk today at Pycon. Pretty nerve-wrecking.
@TerryChia oh! howd it go?
what was it on?
@AviD Ehh, I was pretty nervous especially since I decided to do it on the spot so probably wasn't too clear about some points. :P
Just a quick intro to the cryptography library I am contributing to.
lightning talks are cool, but tricky. Not a lot of work, but if you hit the right groove it can be a rush.
Would have probably went better if I practiced a little the night before or something.
:P
10:26
@TerryChia, is a video of it available online? i'd love to watch that
@Lighty Nah, they weren't filming. (Thank god ;))
@TerryChia ohh big mistake. Lightining talks need way more practice than regular talks - you dont have room to clarify, and if you trip up it breaks your groove for the whole thing.
@AviD Yeah, I figured that now. ;) Maybe next con or something.
first lightining talk I did at a conference, I did as a duo. With my boss... much harder, you really have to get the pacing right.
@AviD Oooh yeah, that sounds scary.
10:39
we did a back and forth, "yo momma"-style talk:
Me: "This thing is great!"
Him: "No, that sucks, because {A}. To fix {A}, you need to do {B}! Now its great!"
Me: "No, {B} sucks, because {C}. To fix {C}, you need to do {D}! NOW its great!"
etc
actually went pretty well, only had one small mess up - he accidentally agreed with me once....
It was on how CAPTCHA sucks, btw.
@AviD :D
@AviD sounds fun
yeah, I enjoyed it - it was only about 6 minutes.
@ManishEarth Hey Manish.
10:42
I've done a dual talk a few times, only times it worked well for me is that type of pacing - attack / counterattack. And then IF it works, it can be great.
@AviD got a script for the captcha one?
So apparently I have Mozilla listed under my GitHub organizations after just one commit got merged.
They sure like adding people eh?
@ManishEarth hmm, might have the slides for it, let me look - this was quite a few years ago.
@AviD I've given a dual talk (to a student audience) of the idiot-smartass type
2007 I think?
yesterday, by AviD
@TerryChia they do that for anybody that still uses Firefox and knows how to find a Github repo.
10:44
cbeebies
@TerryChia where? /me no see any orgs (or on search)
@kalina careful - that almost sounds like a @Lucas call :-)
@ManishEarth I'm part of the firefox-automation-contributor.team in github.com/mozilla.
I don't have any privs though, so meh.
hm, don't see the team
I'm not part of the org :p
(Firefox is mirrored to github, but no activity there, and I have r/w access to mozilla-servo/* but not mozilla/servo)
@ManishEarth Ah. You probably don't contribute to any of their projects that are on GItHub?
10:47
@TerryChia Servo is on github ;-)
whee thanks
@ManishEarth Ah right.
like I said, its a bit out of date, but still apropos.
/me should start learning Rust.
10:48
@AviD I was expecting an image... I got a ppt file... xD
the link says "... .ppt" ...
@AviD but its in a subfolder called "images"
@Nick blame stupid mediawiki. Thats how they store files.
@Nick and under the subfolder /6/66/ - I'm thinking something satanic is going on :-)
@RoryAlsop I noticed that too haha
10:52
@RoryAlsop hm?
oh, breasts
2
@Lucas boobs
he should try carrying some around with him for a bit, he'll get bored of them quickly
@kalina ...I'm not sure about that
this is @Lucas we are talking about. He doesn't get bored as easily as you
(possibly no-one does)
this is very true
I promise you
@RoryAlsop are you tired of boobies?
@LucasKauffman never. And I'm only 68,002 years old
10:54
exactly
they're only interesting to men because you don't have them, you don't have to carry them around, and... well... nevermind
400 line switch statement... no idea if this is gonna work xD
Interesting star wall today
@Nick Sounds like solid code...
10:57
@Nick nicely organised, easily readable code you have there
oh, arp inb4'd me
@kalina well it was either switch or else if ... so I decided to go with a switch xD
sounds like poor implementation
Yea....
Dat array initialization xD
@Nick just dont me review that code.
@AviD My way of designing skill trees .... xD
11:03
I am sadly out of coffee :-(
@Nick Thta can't be good, too many nulls on your screen.
You'll end up with a nullpointer instead of a screen.
@Arperum nah its set to leave the null slots empty xD the one im interested to see how well it works is the Hashmap in hasmap at the top xD
@Nick so I'm guessing that's a minecraft plugin, didn't know you wrote those in Java (although I should've really), perhaps that's why Java is having a resurgance!
@RоryMcCune yea I decided since I know java to start making something for mc too xD
@Nick Why wouldn't hashmap in hashmap work?
11:06
@Arperum no I mean how easy it is to use I have found arrays[][] and such a little bit confusing xD
@Nick if arrays confuse you, are you sure you want to become a programmer?
@AviD not arrays.... 2d or 3d arrays do xD
@Nick so.... are you sure you still want to become a programmer?
@Nick Bah, 3D is nothing, try going at least 5 Deep.
3
@Arperum 5?! oh god what do you do with all these arrays
11:09
@Nick Stuff.
@AviD Yes I am xD
@Nick not if arrays confuse you, you're not.
;-)
@Nick Also: just make some generalized random depth array implementation for fun in C/C++.
List of all colleges.
For each college, list of all departments.
For each department, list of all professors.
For each professor, list of all courses.
for each course, list of all students.
boom, trivial 5-dimension array.
Ahhhh so that's where a 5 dimensional array is needed xD
11:11
@AviD Hehe, is this the "Can you grok pointers test" but one level down?
@AviD Of varianble lengths even, because some courses allow less students then others!
@TerryChia pointers and arrays, sure.
@AviD I wonder how many Javascript "developers" understand pointers.
@Arperum of course, each of those items is actually a reference, since some are in more than one. so you have pointers on top of that.
@TerryChia less than those that understand security
11:13
@AviD Aah, the days of confused the lab assistant with some *** situation. (We were bored and decided to generalize a task)
@TerryChia hey! Those are called "engineers".
@AviD Hmm? They are referred to as "Javascript Ninjas" around here.
@TerryChia hehe. And RockStars, obviously.
because writing some crappy scripts without jumping around the room screaming, just isnt the same.
@TerryChia javascript is a scripting language. not a programming language. If you only work with that you are a scriptkiddie scripter and not a developer.
@Arperum Here we go again, the arbitrary distinction between a "scripting language" and a "programming language".
11:15
@TerryChia Yup. Because the internet is made for pedantry about stupid distictions isn't it?
@Arperum Well actually, the internet was made for porn, but pedantry about stupid distinctions does take up a good amount of it.
@AviD How could I ever forget that?
Heh, this comment on reddit amuses me a little: reddit.com/r/linux/comments/zzhd9/strfry_the_gnu_c_library/…
@Arperum Well actually, I doubt you actively forgot it, you just weren't thinking about that aspect at this point.
@AviD Yup more like that. I was busy being pedantic.
11:22
@Arperum you DO realize that I am being nothing but pedantic? About stupid distinctions....
@AviD We are building on the internet right here!
Apparently a new skype version is available for linux... im debating if I want to install skype or not xD
@RоryMcCune You caught the news about the docker vuln?
@ManishEarth Woah! I didn't even notice. Same guy?
probably
11:28
@ManishEarth is stirfry() a real function??
@TerryChia yeah interesting, and fixed in 1.0. Another good example of why trusting virtualization/separation techniques isn't a good idea on it's own. there was a v.good response from the docker project owner on HN, basically said "don't trust docker on it's own use SELinux and other stuff as well :) "
@AviD apparently
@RоryMcCune I'm basically treating docker as a deployment method. Relying on it for isolation is stupid, there was a talk about that a couple of months back.
Anyone has a script that will fork a repo on GitHub and clone the forked repo? Asking before I spend 5 minutes writing one.
@TerryChia doesnt github have a button for that?
11:32
@AviD I want to automate the process. Forking, cloning and setting upstream is too many clicks when you fork 2-3 repos a day. :P
@TerryChia is this for making/submitting patches?
@TerryChia ever heard of hub?
awesome little ruby program
@ManishEarth That's the GitHub CLI thingy right?
hub fork, hub remote add Manishearth, hub pull-request
yeppers
@ManishEarth you've got a redundant word in there, no need to say awesome if it's a ruby program, that's just assumed :op
11:33
@ManishEarth Bah, that's still three commands. Meh, I'll write my own script.
Just alias hub spork to hub fork; hub clone
:p
@TerryChia well, you'd still need to interact with the API
@ManishEarth I have worked with the GitHub API before, it's pretty simple. :)
@RоryMcCune Yeah, I spend a lot of time fixing random stuff in random projects when I get bored. :P
@TerryChia these three? hub clone <repo>; cd <reponame>; bub fork?
@TerryChia ah well if it's small stuff you can make/submit the change via the web interface :)
it automatically fork/clones it and does a pull request
@RоryMcCune Yep, I know. That's only good for fixing docs though imo.
11:36
@TerryChia well I've done code changes (albeit small ones) using that approach...
Ok, so tlsenum verifies TLS certificates now. Yay!
@ManishEarth So yeah, about Drepper. He is a special kind of asshole.
You think Linus was bad? He's nothing compared to Drepper.
But what's this volichat thing? It's there on other dupe comments too
also that bug number doesn't exist
@ManishEarth Looks like spam.
Ah
:p did not realize that
11:56
doodeedoodeedooodeedooodeedoooooooo
@kalina new number 1 club hit?
where's the drop
no, it's GiR, silly
@kalina dotdotdot remix?
not even started it
@AviD she needs to sort the original before the remix!
11:59
2 mins ago, by kalina
doodeedoodeedooodeedooodeedoooooooo
we've had this discussion already
@RоryMcCune Or does she? /conspiracy
looks like its already done
@kalina I thought it was DWs theme xD
@kalina Ahh - my mistake
11:59
I struggle to make music when I'm in the mindset of "meh, throwaway track"
@AviD well looks like it's as done as other things people call music these days </oldman>
you are old
