gladys puzzle's up, y'all
hopefully it works now, i've spotted like four different errors at the test solving phase
answer check doesn't seem to work for either link but i'm not in the mood to wrestle with penpa any more than i already have
in unrelated news, my favourite term i've learned today is high muckamuck

Q: Motion in the Ocean

JafeThis is part 65 of the puzzle series Around the World in Many Days. Each part is solvable on its own. ”It’s not the size of the crossword that counts.” – unknown Dear Puzzling, Today I have dived into the crystal clear waters of a tropical island group known for its diverse flora and fauna. I ...

Q: Can you color the 8x8 grid red and blue?

Will Octagon GibsonConsider an 8x8 grid made up of 64 unit squares. The goal is to color the 64 squares red or blue so that the following two constraints are satisfied: ROWS: For every pair of adjacent rows, exactly half the squares in the upper row must match the color of the square in the corresponding position ...

C4 hint: The third letter is B.

06:11
@Jafe I think 32 across should be 33 across
oh right, thanks
fixed now
thanks
clearly it was a genius excuse to bump the puzzle to the top of the page
any chance the definition in the c4 is "cut hay"?
something like REAP if that was the right number of letters
07:13
Hit a contradiction while doing the nonogram... it's probably a sign that I should go back to doing the more urgent stuff
@oAlt if you do continue the nonogram instead, you may wish to double-check your counting. It's six between the lines, not the usual five, and you may have gotten confused.

Q: When you think you got it, think again

Prim3numbahThe clues below aren't hard to solve, but can you tell me what 3-word phrase that's hidden? One of me is used to hit the ball hoping to get a home run afterall. (3) One of me is often cubic shaped and used to store things, sometimes mail it brings. (2) One of me is used to see how fast people ...

@msh210 thanks, although I feel it was because of something else
I'll try it again
10:12
Augh I made another mistake
Time to start over (:

Q: Catching a Cat on an infinite Line

Tim SeifertUpon entering a (very) large room, you are faced with an infinite line of cardboard boxes that are labeled, in order, by the nonnegative integers. In one of these boxes, a cat is hiding, but you do not know which one. Your task is to find the cat in this setup. To do that, you and the cat take tu...

10:57
Finally done
There's no way I'll be able to write up an explanation for the logical path of the nonogram unfortunately... been staring at my computer for three hours for this and I've started to become tired
I'll just give a bounty to anyone who can
11:39
@Jafe I can now imagine how tedious it was, with a nonogram this big
yeah not the greatest choice in retrospect, could have accomplished the exact thing with a much smaller maze
glad it was still solvable in the end
and yeah i don't think people expect a very detailed explanation for nonograms generally, a lot of it is just repeating the same handful of steps a lot
@Jafe yeah at least
12:05
I have no idea how to get a B in that C4 clue.
12:37
@msh210 CUBED (cut, past tense) = CU(-t) (cut, cut) + BED (hay, as in "hit the hay")
Wow nice find
I wondered whether the word ended in -bed, but then I thought that the base form also had to end in -b. I forgot that cube was a counterexample since it ends in -be, and I guess I also forgot that cube can be a verb with that sense, only thinking about the noun sense
@juicifer yes indeed
well found
thanks
well set
CCCC: Hears "craze cut" (5 or 5 or 5)
12:54
Oh wow
I've found two, but that third one is still hiding...
^ Same :)
Hehe
I'm reckoning it uses the other possible wordplay method here...
@juicifer shear anagram, or share anagram, or mowed (homophone of "mode" = craze = fad/trend), all with defn cut (first one verb, second one noun, third one verb past tense)?
Ah, mowed, that's what I was missing!
13:02
@oAlt got all three! nicely found
Thanks haha
nice thrödinger
4
Haha I was just thinking about what to call a Schrodinger clue if it had three parts
it may be a schrödinger, but it's not the schrödingest
i mean it's pretty schröding
also like oAlt i considered -ed forms of words ending in -b but somehow not -be
13:09
@Jafe yeah I'd say it schrödes pretty well
CCCC: Test skinned mollusk - it's given a standard score (4)
This is a modified version of a clue I deleted earlier, so this is probably a giveaway to those who saw the deleted one
well in d&d, rolling 1d20 might be considered a test of a character's ability, and of course, score is 20, so all we need is a reason to describe the band one direction as "skinned mollusk - it's given a standard" and we're golden

May 22 at 12:11, by Jafe
meanwhile, my grid for next week's puzzle is so complicated that the browser rejects the solve link URL as too long... dammit penpa
Was this the motion in the ocean one? If so then I'm curious about what edit you made for the link to fit
13:51
yeah that one
started over from a blank copy and just put in minimal info for the answer check... no green cells in the nonogram, no maze shading in the crossword etc
no idea why it would save that extra info for a solve link in the first place but seems to have worked
Ah I get it
May 9, 2021 at 11:56, by Jafe
someone gave my 4-year-old a miniature 3x3x3 rubik's cube to play with and now i have to learn how to solve it in order to not break the illusion of "dad knows everything"
three years later the ship has long sailed but today i finally did it \o/
Congratulations :) Sounds like you really should have got the 'CUBED' clue then ;)
heheh
14:19
i'm imagining a test-skinned mollusk... you scribble the answers onto its surface
Lol
@Jafe Nice. Don't imitate me who unlearned it lol
15:02
@oAlt MARK = M(OLLUSK) + A + R (standard//regular)
@AncientSwordRage hmm, what is 'test' doing there?
@oAlt I think this might be LSAT (Test) = (-mol)L(-usk) + 'S (it's) + A + T (standard score)
NO wait...
It's actually QUIZ = (-s)QUI(-d) + Z (same link!)
Two for the price of one!
crazy that LSAT very nearly fits too ('s=it's maybe the only iffy part)
15:09
's all relative I guess...
15:21
@Stiv Right on. For the former attempt I probably would have used "skinned multiple times"

CCCC: Composer's score perhaps breaks record (5)
Apr 24, 2022 at 6:06, by Jafe
man, i need new material
I realised the second one was a possibility (indeed a probability) a second after posting the first...
But in this case, I guess it's fine because Z is definitely not an easy letter to clue
@Stiv hah
@oAlt well when it's paired with an E it is pretty EZ to clue
CCCC: Voters ruined nicest county (12)
Mental anagramming tool, please work...
15:33
constituency* = voters
@Jafe Indeed. TIL you can use 'constituency' as well as 'constituents' for this purpose, rather than just thinking of it as a geographic area
Ah nice spot
CCCC: Power to pick Providence? (11)
I realise I probably overuse anagrams as wordplay in my cryptics, but if I find a nice one it's going in...

15:48
@oAlt congratulations on the solve must have been quite the grind! I saw the size of the nonogram and was like ‘no thank you’!
btw, new puzzle dropping soon
this took a lot of fiddling to get right, hopefully I don't find out I messed something up
(thumbsup)
(I'll be out shortly myself, so will have to see it later once solved, presumably!)

Q: Need some help with my math homework (pretty please?)

AnkoganitCan someone help with a problem from my math textbook? This is the problem I'm stuck on: I don't really get how these kinds of problems work. 17:03
@Ankoganit goooooood question
@Sphinx Turns out I did mess something up lol
Fortunately easy to fix and doesn't really affect the solving process
Thanks for the comment @GentlePurpleRain ,not sure I'd have noticed otherwise
17:19
@Ankoganit No problem.
17:41
I’m voting to close this question because there is nowhere near enough information for us to be your tech support. (e.g. it's likely this hint is meant to make sense only to you) — bobble 2 mins ago
18:10
@Ankoganit I deleted my old comment and added a new one. Basically just flipped the rectangle on its end.
cool, I'll delete my comments then
@GentlePurpleRain did you mean to write 7+3 sqrt6 rather than 12+ 3sqrt6?
@Ankoganit Yes, you're right. Sorry about that. Fixed.
no worries!

Q: A quantum physics puzzle

Alex RavskyA new mathematical approach to quantum physics via graphs was found recently, see this paper for more details. It particular, it refers to papers by Anton Zeilinger, a Nobel laureate in physics of 2022. The approach is very promising. One of the authors, Mario Krenn, wrote to me: I would propose...
