8:00 PM
@ScottPack my problem is the database kinda quintuples in size when you make a text dump of it :-/

@voretaq7 It'll be fine.

@Cole I'm attempting to make a remote desktop client
I got the remote part working fine...now it's getting our receipt printers to work
which is a pain :[

@NathanC interesting.

@voretaq7 Oh, you misunderstood. It'll be fine for me. You're going to have a bad time of it.

8:02 PM
But, work resumes on that tomorrow. Outta here. :p

@ScottPack As a Linux user I know EXACTLY HOW TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM: Disk Space Overcommit! Then when the filesystem is full the OS will just delete the biggest file to make room...

@voretaq7 I like it! That'll make retention scripts a sight easier.

@voretaq7 Ideally it'll be a big database table you don't need anymore!

@JoelESalas the benefits clearly outweigh the problems!

@voretaq7 Does postgres do one file per table?

8:07 PM
(I'm getting a little snippy with people who cling to the OOM killer like it's a Good Thing these days)
@JoelESalas "kinda"

@voretaq7 #nosql #mongo #flatfiles #mybutt

(it will split tables up as needed)
@WesleyDavid you really want me to shove the 30GB of dev data up your butt?

@voretaq7 No, I want you to shove 30GB of dev data up my butt.
Your pronouns are all wrong.
Bro, do you even know my butt?
2

@WesleyDavid nope. And I'm OK with that.

Speaking of my butt, RedHat's OpenShift is intriguing me.

I blame all of this on @DennisKaarsemaker
2

@WesleyDavid You seem to be talking about your booty quite frequently lately.

@ScottPack Is that because he's a pirate?

@ScottPack I feel dumber for watching even part of that.

8:33 PM
@WesleyDavid what are you blaming on me kit-e-kat?

@84104 You have to respect the man's enthusiasm.

@DennisKaarsemaker My butt.
2

@WesleyDavid I cannot be blamed for the bad performance of your butt.

@DennisKaarsemaker MY BUTT, YOU FOOL!!!
2

You should have upgraded to badonkadonk a long time ago

8:35 PM
MYYYYYYYY BUTTTTTTTT!!!
3
My butt is all over the star wall. =(
5
STAHP!!

@WesleyDavid well, you're a cat. You love sticking your butt in peoples faces.

I wish I could find the wasted talent comic I want right now...

@ScottPack give me my brain cells back dammit

Bee Double Oh Tee Why!

Hi, I had a networking question that was related to home networking(though with multiple interfaces and more confusion) but I was told by SU to ask here anyway.Would it be acceptable?

8:39 PM

@ObsessiveSSOℲ Maybe. Do you have an existing question already?

Yes, though not posted on the site. Should I post first?

@ObsessiveSSOℲ SuperUser is sorely mistaken and needs to die painfully choking on the blood of its own children.

@ObsessiveSSOℲ home networking is rather offtopic and this isn't a support channel. Two wrongs make a right, so go for it :)

8:40 PM
@ObsessiveSSOℲ Was it posted on SU?

Not yet/
I asked in their chat.

@ObsessiveSSOℲ Home networking questions are de-facto off topic here. Ask on SU, and whoever told you to ask here should be corrected.

@ObsessiveSSOℲ OK, give us the brief outlines

@ObsessiveSSOℲ But really, if you can ask the question with zero reference to it being in a home environment, we might look at other way. Insofar as the home-nature of the question doesn't itself cause the problems, like for instance NAT redirecting to get around blocked ports, etc.

@WesleyDavid @ObsessiveSSOℲ ...or the question being about a crappy d-link, linksys, netgear, etc. wonder-router

8:41 PM
@voretaq7 Zyxel or go home!

The router is as removed from the problem as possible. It's actually the OS configuration.

@WesleyDavid ugh, are those still around?

@voretaq7 Last time I dealt with one was '07.

@voretaq7 I recommend nothing else. After all, nobody's been fired for buying Zyxel.

@voretaq7 I have one.
works ok, except no ipv6
then again, nobody but @MichaelHampton cares about ipv6 :)

8:42 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker so... "piece of shit" then? :)

So I somehow have two differing connections to the internet via two different IP addresses, and both are connected to my desktop machine (also a game server), on two different interfaces....

@ObsessiveSSOℲ "Somehow"? You didn't sign up with two different ISPs?

I'm basically inheriting this place from ancestry.

I read your question in root-access: no, not possible. Your ISP will block packets not originating from the IP that belongs to it.
Unless it's a really shitty isp.

@DennisKaarsemaker They should.

8:44 PM
@DennisKaarsemaker s/shitty/incompetent/

@voretaq7 Whoever that was was me. And I said post of SU, but SF chat will have better answers for these questions. (Non-trvial network questions rather suck on SU). With an added 'ask carefully' and a 'it is off-topic on the site'

@DennisKaarsemaker Unless it's a really shitty average ISP.

@Hennes AND they'd start filtering quick when they got blocked for emitting bogons

Resiential, so who would know.

@Hennes bonk you know better :)

8:45 PM
Yup.
Hmm, didn;t we gain a networking SE site recently?

@Hennes (but thanks for sending him to chat instead of just saying "go ask over there" :-)

@Hennes Yeah. They'll also say "not possible" :)

@Hennes It's in beta. But last I checked, they don't do home networks either

So if I'm seeing TCP Fast Retransmits, that means that I am dropping packets somewhere, right? Or sending them fast enough to get erroneous retransmits?

@Hennes yeah, but they're supposedly our networking overspill
@MikeyB probably ("I can't think of another reason you'd see them")

8:46 PM
I think the networking site is intended more for the big iron neckbeards who are doing weird things like mesh MPLS networks with active/passive failovers.

@MichaelHampton Last time I checked they were still creating their FAQ.

But I know that I can send packets from either connection successfully. The question is that if I set the metric to prefer sending connections over the "browsing" interface, then when UDP packets for the game come in through the other, will the OS be smart enough to send the replies back through the "server" network interface?

@ObsessiveSSOℲ it should (because it will know it's talking through the "server" IP)

Or will the metrics confuse it and cause it to send the datagrams back out the other way(as they're not a full two-way stream)?

@MikeyB fast retransmit is retransmit because the sender thinks the ack is taking to long, instead of retransmit because you get a 'ttl-exceeded' or other fault indication.

8:48 PM
but honestly? This setup sounds like a hack fest
rebuild it, properly separating server roles from your workstation, and your life will suck a whole lot less

It confused me enough that I was not able to give a clean answer.

@Hennes well, you're easily confused :P

Again, my apologies. I can;'t even see the problem at hand fully with my attention span... :P

@Hennes all our answers here are dirty. I mean have you seen all the cat-butt prints on our star wall?

@DennisKaarsemaker Hrm? fast retransmit is an optimization because the receiver received enough packets out-of-order that the sender can assume that one was dropped. That's my understanding.

8:49 PM
@MikeyB it's not at all possible I'm misremembering an explanation once given to me. To the googles!

@MikeyB @DennisKaarsemaker effectively "same thing"

Anyway, thanks!

whoever made this iPad FTP app are noobs
its called FTPManagerFree

if you got ACK1 ACK2 ACK4 ACK5 ACK6 ACK7 you can safely assume #3 is lost (and you probably waited a while)

except thats too long of a name for the home screen, so it shows "FTPMa...rFree"

8:50 PM
@MikeyB en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_retransmit says I got it about half right and you added the other half of the puzzle :)

@voretaq7 except I'm pushing 25146 packets/sec on the interface, divided among 4 streams...

@David F...TransferProtocol
@MikeyB and you're seeing a lot of retransmits, or just the occasional few?

@voretaq7 Pretty sure it's not "a lot":
[root@fleming4 ~]# tshark -i eth2 -R tcp.analysis.retransmission
Running as user "root" and group "root". This could be dangerous.
Capturing on eth2
  0.907542 192.168.10.6 -> 192.168.10.11 NFS [RPC retransmission of #21421][TCP Fast Retransmission] V3 COMMIT Call, FH:0xd8693366

NFS... I just threw up a little bit in my mouth...

8 retransmits over 40K packets in 18 seconds
@voretaq7 ORUCUL!

8:53 PM
that doesn't seem too bad though. What kind of network is this? 4xGbE?
@MikeyB OraSun

@voretaq7 1×10GbE

When two great evils combine: NFS + Oracle Licensing

NFS isn't that bad for non-critical stuff (note: VDI)

@pauska NFS is bad.
there are just ways to make it less bad

@voretaq7 Endgame is Oracle in the cloud. Hitting datastore over NFS.

8:59 PM
@MikeyB so it can rain on your parade?

@voretaq7 Are there ways to make Oracle Licensing less bad?

I don't know what you're talking about. Oracle licensing is great.
If you're Oracle.

I've seen some nifty pNFS whitepapers crushing every single IOPS record out there. It just lacks the resilience block gives, but like I said, that works just fine for certain applications

If you're Oracle, I will murder you in your sleep. Or when you're awake.
Really, any time I can get near you with any kind of weapon.
Including my bare hands.

@voretaq7 10K transactions/sec (3300B size transaction), <1ms latency, replication happening on the backend with GPFS. Looking pretty decent so far. But I'm hitting a performance plateau and trying to get around it, not sure if it's linux on client/server or networking. Or Oracle.

9:02 PM
@MikeyB what's your IOWAIT look like?
(and are your tables clustered on a particularly grotty index if you're having insert problems)

I was watching my graduation ceremony until the valedictorian started a god/Jesus rant. OMFG

@voretaq7 On the NFS clients, around 2%. On the NFS server, 0%.

@Jacob GBIC loves me, this I know - for the switches tells me so....
@MikeyB OK, so it's not The Usual Suspect then :)

Q: Rack Console Setup

Paul RikerI rack console with mouse, keyboard and monitor. It's only output port is a vga connection. My KVM switch has USB Mouse, USB Keyboard, PS2 Keyboard, PS2 Mouse and VGA. The cables I bought have VGA on one end and VGA and 1 USB on the other. The keyboard and mouse for the console don't work. Any id...

@MikeyB rub it in, prick.

@voretaq7 We're trying to build a case for "spend a tenth of your NetApp budget on this setup for way more performance".

@MikeyB how's the benchmarking look right now? :)

user image
2
^cracks me up^

@voretaq7 Pretty DAMN good. The only gimpy thing is my 10GbE setup, I think that's what's constraining performance but need to show it.

9:11 PM
@MikeyB if you think it's the network bits why not just netcat stuff across the wire from box to box?

Rhel 7 not until 2014. Oh well

@MichaelHampton <-- blissfully unaffected.

@MichaelHampton Is there a more official version of that news available somewhere yet?

@freiheit The presentation is apparently still in progress.

9:20 PM
@ChrisS has that VM been hacked yet? :)

@ChrisS You sick fuck
2

no png rendering... haha

probably no JavaScript support

well done lads, less than 3 minutes :)

9:22 PM
Damn Stupid PuttyGen.
@Chopper3 Evenin' Sir.

@Adrian howdy

@MarkHenderson Good mornin' snuggles.

@WesleyDavid lick

@WesleyDavid Stupid Ass PuttyGen password entry field doesn't handle 64 character passwords.

@Adrian Lame. I hit on a problem today where registering a RedHat system craps out if there are certain characters in the password

9:26 PM
@WesleyDavid I have no words.

@WesleyDavid '; drop table users; --

@DennisKaarsemaker you can use those words though...

Did chat fall over for anyone else?
My butt took down StackExchange!

@WesleyDavid Nope

@voretaq7 the cli for registering doesn't escape certain chars, and for this one account there was a () in the string that was not at all liked.
So when do we start swapping "my balls" for "big data"?

9:30 PM
@WesleyDavid dogballs are big data

@voretaq7 Millions and millions of tiny little data sets contained therein!

@WesleyDavid You keep your balls out of my butt!

@freiheit No, my balls. DAMN YOU PEOPLE!!

BigData Retriever

Okay, motion to rename "my balls" as "your balls."

9:31 PM
wait.. I can do better...

@WesleyDavid seconded
@voretaq7 You can fit more balls than that in your mouth?

I think we need a canonical "how do i send bulk email" question.

@TomO'Connor You take a mailchimp subscription

@TomO'Connor Don't encourage them

@freiheit Gives me something to mark as duplicates to, though.

9:33 PM
@TomO'Connor Burn the spammers with fire

not all bulk email is spam

mv myballs yourballs
    mv: overwrite `yourballs'?
There @freiheit, happy?

@voretaq7 So that's what happened to the Lycos dog.

@WesleyDavid Did you provision your balls in my butt?
3

9:37 PM
We are disgusting people.

The ability to provision unlimited resources on demand in my butt really helps with managing the dynamic requirements of your balls.
3

@freiheit Brings new insight into the term "balls deep"

Or so I read in the tech fluff news...

you two are terrible.

@freiheit I'm laughing too hard at that. =)

9:38 PM
@voretaq7 Just load up any old news piece about "big data in the cloud", make the appropriate replacements and type it into this window...

IBM Report: Sometimes 2 minutes is too late. For time-sensitive processes such as catching fraud, your balls must be used as it streams into your enterprise in order to maximize its value.
Okay, I'm losing it right now.

> My Butt Computing model is a perfect match for your balls since butt computing provides unlimited resources on demand.

Wow, Chrome allowing me to in-line edit web pages has just lef me to new depths.

jesus christ

9:42 PM
trying to recover a file from Windows Server Backup

@freiheit I thought cloud was butt?

its been sitting at "Initializing..." for like 20 minutes
cant cancel, cant close

@David so.... Windows?

@voretaq7 Ok, ok, I need to automate this better. :)

@voretaq7 har har funny man

9:44 PM
@David I don't think that's normal. I've had pretty big archives that open right up in just a few moment.

<_<
>_>
Using set-next-statement in the debugger always feels sort of unclean and dangerous, but turning just-too-late into just-in-time is nice...

@WesleyDavid yeah, its just 1 file too
i dunno how to cancel it though
i needed 3 files, 2 of which had shadow copies and restored instantly
but this one doesnt have a shadow copy going back far enough, for some reason

That's like when someone gets shot, so you slice 'em open and shove your hand in their chest so you can plug the hole in their aorta before they bleed out...

what do?

@David /suicide

9:56 PM
@voretaq7 >:[

@voretaq7 no no no... you slice open their back and shove your hand in, so you can use them as a puppet

10:13 PM
@voretaq7 rofl
god damn it... my nights shot

@MattBear Yeah? Couldn't find an excuse to stay late at work?
Boom! Tip your waitresses!

apparently I have to go to my wifes little cousins junior high graduation...
teh fuck? I diddnt even want to go to mine!

@MattBear I just watched mine over a live stream :)

hold on... I think im getting an alarm from the UPS

@MattBear there is so much wrong with that

10:15 PM
BEEP.
BEEEEEEEEEEP

1) graduation 2) junior high 3) cousin's

no... damn it, let me grab another cup of water

@voretaq7 You forgot the THUNK of the transfer case

hah there we go
now I get to work late!
grep -H -r "<\?\r*#0c0896#\r*.*\r*#.*\r*\?>" ./ | cut -d: -f1
what am I doing wrong
its ignoring the regex and matching the string itself

@Jacob there shouldn't be a thunk if the UPS is alarming (unless you have it set to auto-bypass?)

10:20 PM
@voretaq7 heh the thunk came from me jumpering the terminals with a crowbar, and flying across the room into the wall :p

@MattBear well clearly SOMEONE didn't get the operations department's memo about wearing rubber-soled shoes.

@voretaq7 steel toed with metal studs through the sole, works great for user discipline
I got a better idea now! Pick up handcuffs, duct tape, and a ball gag on the way home

@MattBear The safety word is banana

@voretaq7 no safety word, just a niiice quite peacefull night

@MattBear you can get the same effect with a bottle of chloral hydrate...

10:30 PM
@voretaq7 its kinda creepy that you know that...

@MattBear I know lots of things

@voretaq7 eh, guys gotta get a date somehow

@MattBear 1963, from russia with love.

its like porn to me

@WesleyDavid TightVNC Server tops out at 8 characters. headdesk
Truly Sad Thing Is: It Didn't Used To......

@MattBear pfft, date

10:51 PM
lol this is awesome... dack.com/web/bullshit.html

really not understanding all the Xbox One hate
PC Gamers haven't been able to share games for about a decade
And PC Gamers haven't been able to buy 2nd hand games since online activation, so almost 10 years
Time to join the real world, console fucks
And with Steam, who gives a shit? Buying a 2nd hand game means going to the store, dealing with bratty teenagers, and then waiting for it to install from a non-existant DVD drive

@MarkHenderson yeah, seriously
though it will put GameStop out of business

@MattBear Boo fucking hoo
The fewer middle men that take a slice of my pie the better
My only regret about fewer middle men is that the publishers will just pick up the extra cash and not pass it onto the developers

@MarkHenderson well, if they drop game prices in return, be awesome

@MattBear They won't. But games in NA are already cheap
