12:00 AM
@WesleyDavid I do, actually. Put on some of the 40lbs i lost :(
@MDMarra BUT I CAN LOG INTO SQL WITH MY ACCOUNT!?

I've been doing a lot of lifting. Lifting the glass to the box of wine...lifting the glass to my mouth...

@Cole Good! Keep it up with the weights.
Feels good.

I just lifted some tortilla chips and guacamole to my mouth.

I'm starting to get my Adonis belt / Iliac furrows.

I just lifted two bottles of Summer Shandy to my lips.

12:01 AM
@ScottPack why not straight from the spout?

Voila, no more headaches!

@MDMarra I can't get in Summer Shandy.

@MDMarra Have you tried Porch Rocker?

I have not

@MDMarra I can't stand how fruity Summer Shandy is, but Porch Rocker is much more beer like.

12:01 AM
@MDMarra Curious Traveler is a good one if you like Summer Shandy

@ScottPack I may have to try that one, I'm not a fruit beer kind of guy.

@Iain Was trying to get me on some ginger beer. I need to try some.

Morgan's Pier just straight up pours half a lemonade into a cup and gives you a can of Yuengling. That's a shandy ghetto philly style

@Cole Me neither. Porch Rocker tastes like beer that has an aftertaste that's the lemonade tart.

12:02 AM
My girlfriend had this watermelon beer at dinner the other night - yuck
@ScottPack I'll have to try it.
I can't get into Yuengling, either.

@MDMarra Well, that at least makes the Yuengling taste better.

I think I just enjoy very bitter/hoppy beers.

I don't, not really. I'm a big fan of Imperial Stouts and Nut Browns. I like a heavy flavor but slightly sweet.

It feels so luxurious to have a raid 0 with write back caching on my PC

I can drink some Goose Island, but not a huge Imperial Stout kind of guy.
However, Newcastle is one of my favorite beers, I do like Nut Browns. Usually a Pale Ale or IPA drinker.

12:06 AM
It's a proven fact that enjoyment of stouts is directly proportional to maniless.
Newcastle used to be my fav, but I find myself liking it less and less as I get older. I don't know if it's just where I am, but it always seems to have a slightly off bitter flavor.

I like Dry stouts.

@MDMarra Where do you practice your Power Stances

@ScottPack do you like smoked porters?

@ScottPack Have you had Yeti? Not sure if it's available outside CO.

@ShaneMadden I've heard of that.
If anyone likes smoked porters, Jack's Abby Smoke and Dagger is awesome. It's a local brewery in Framingham, MA

12:14 AM
@Cole It's pretty tasty. I'm not terribly big on stouts, but I like it.

@ShaneMadden I was drinking Fat Tire when I was in CO

@Cole What kind of name is that?

@Cole Yeah, it's a good one. Actually spotted it in other states the last few times I've traveled, I guess it's catching on.

Probably because drinking it give you a fat spare tire around your waist

@Cole 18m later :) I have a theory. Time in MA must pass 1.8x slower than in the normal world

12:16 AM
@ShaneMadden yeah a lot of people over here know of it.
@Jacob it does actually!

@Cole I see...
O_O

@Jacob just trying to eat dinner.

@Cole Why didn't you say that :P

All this talk about beer has caused me to drink!

@Cole I'll be back in 10 standard minutes then. :P

12:23 AM
k

@WesleyDavid - i was wrong, my wife wants a Labrador, not a border collie. She knows more about dogs and she freaked out when I mentioned collies; for the same reason you did

@MarkHenderson Labs are sweet, loyal dogs. Beware, if there is one ounce of water within ten blocks, they will be in it.

@JoelESalas I don't. I practice my power awesomeness

@WesleyDavid Haha just like a toddler then

12:36 AM
LOL

@RyanRies But no coverage of NSA spying, I imagine?

@RyanRies They are fucking disgusting

@Adrian Why would you have anything to hide [in your PB&J sandwich]?

@MarkHenderson You're disgusting, you vegemite eating cretin!

@WesleyDavid Time to cut the kitty off. Clearly hitting the catnip a bit hard.

12:40 AM
@WesleyDavid I hate peanut butter with so much vengance

I do like real peanut butter, but not that sweetened crap like Jif/Gif or however you pronounce it.

@jscott Heh. That too. It's been very interesting watching the reactions from my various connections.

I remember the scarring I got the first time I ever ate it. It was at daycare. I was 3. They gave me a peanut butter sandwich and forced me to eat it, even though I found it hideously disgusting.
These days you would never dream of giving a daycare child anything with peanuts, but this was in the outback in the late 80s

@MarkHenderson Do you not like peanuts? Or jams/jelly at all?

Dying was just a part of life
@jscott Peanuts. They are vile. Jam - fuck I love jam. Jam is the reason I got fat. Jam and hot chips. And burgers.

12:42 AM
An allergy then?

@jscott No allergy either. Just gross.

@MarkHenderson Jam and hot chips? That sounds an odd combination.

@jscott Not together
Although a few months ago my friend convinced me to have hot chips drowned in vinegar. It sounded gross but it was one of the best orgasms my mouth ever had
It was, in fact, just like salt and vinegar chips (fancy that)

@Cole back
@Cole You better have a mic?

no i dont

12:46 AM
@Cole :( You need to get one

Yeah I never play with anyone, none of my friends game and you guys are my internet friends

@Cole It's 19.99$ You need one :P

lol
or less
/me needs to check if his works

Yeah, I'll get one eventually not this week though

stupid touchtyping.

12:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek you have xbox?
@Cole Amazon Overnight :)

@Jacob I can't afford it this week

hell no
(by which I mean, I'm usually spending money on things-not-a-console)

@JourneymanGeek bleh

@Jacob: I'm running off 300 quid a month, and I just built a gaming PC ;p

12:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek Steal money

@Jacob what do you usually play in Halo? I pretty much just play SWAT

@Cole SWATs not bad, I like Team Slayer as well. Objective games are tough if you can't communicate

@Jacob yeah, if you want to play Swat or Team Slayer now - I'm out of my game

@Cole I joined your game :), either or works
@Cole Using DMR or BR

DMR
man sucked that round, still getting used to these new maps. Just started playing again after not playing since December

1:00 AM
Yeah, the BR is too under powered, nice game.
@Cole I haven't played since game release

I can't use the BR, a lot of people use it though.

OK, who voted to close this?

Q: Managing access to multiple linux system

SwartzA searched for answers but have found nothing on here... Long story short: a non-profit organization is in dire need of modernizing its infrastructure. First thing is to find an alternatives to managing user accounts on a number of Linux hosts. We have 12 servers (both physical and virtual) and...

or just use the Magnum

@Cole COWBOY
@Andrew We don't do product suggestions

@Jacob disagree, it's not a shopping question

1:03 AM
@Andrew product suggestions != shopping

@Jacob we've definitely done "product suggestions" where product = solution approach

@Jacob: if he swapped a 'is there a way to' then talked about those requirements as necessary if he needed a third party product, it would work better no?

Yo, is @RyanRies around?
Paging @RyanRies

@JourneymanGeek 3 mins

I have another awesome customer AD story to share

1:05 AM
anyway, there's a few potential dupe candidates, but it's not OT

@Jacob dude 29 kills lol

Sorry playing an intense match with Cole
@Cole A few tricks

I'm super rusty

@JourneymanGeek Yeah that seems good
@Cole remember people can't run and gun nor can they fight close in so even if you can't kill them they can't kill you

@mdmarra don't nobody care! I have stories that would make your blood curdle!!

1:13 AM
Oh and the middle of the screen is your target. That will help alot. even if you have no reticle

I starting teaching my friend Linux today, to help him get a better job... When I start at Rackspace, I'm going to ask if I can "sponsor" him so he can work there...

@kevin you got the job!?!

@ewwhite Huh!? Why do you say it like that?

posted on June 12, 2013 by Matt Simmons

If you live under a rock or something, it will shock you to know that the US Government has not only had the capability of tapping into the databases of the biggest, most widely-ranging internet sites around. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Skype, Apple, etc. The entire list probably isn't even known. Anyway, it's been no secret [...]

I didn't know you got the job.

1:16 AM
@ewwhite Ya, but you sounded surprised... Are you trying to say something?

@KevinSoviero Dunno, read more as excited on my end, but to each their own reading. :)

@MDMarra I'm in and out

@RyanRies And your hot and cold
:P

@jscott I think I forgot the ;) on the previous comment...

@RyanRies Well be in for a minute!

1:20 AM
@kevin yes, I'm trying to say you're an ungrateful wretch who doesn't deserve the job!

@Jacob alright, I'm done for tonight. Have to get some sleep.

(Or congrats)

@Cole that was junk; ok later

night erryone

@ewwhite I'm assuming it's the first one. ;)
Anyway, night all, there's a new episode of Warehouse 13 calling my name!

1:25 AM
@KevinSoviero So how soon until you start giving the sweet insider hook-up to your SF.chat bros?

@jscott Insider "hook-up"?

@KevinSoviero Discounts! You know, dealz. :)

@jscott Isn't the chat room public? :D

@KevinSoviero Well, congrats regardless, enjoy the new episode.

@jscott night... And sorry I'm not being very funny... I'm not tired when funny... Wait, somethings wrong with that sentence.

1:30 AM
@KevinSoviero iseewhatyoudidthere

@MDMarra It's more of a plane wreck. Please can walk away from train wrecks. ;)

1:43 AM
@WesleyDavid who was the MCM that you told me to follow?

@MDMarra I don't remember... was it today? I mentioned MCA Peter Chow, but he's more on Flickr and G+

yeah him
im on G+
once a month

Let me find him - he's a nice guy. Posts a wide variety of things. Works at a power company in CA and does a lot with big z series IBM mainframes and their AD infrastructure.

@MDMarra: why else would someone fo to /reddit/syyadmin ;p

1:46 AM
word up

"IT professional since 1986 with years of experience in Microsoft, Unix/Linux and networking platforms. Specialize in Active Directory/Exchange/SQL migrations, VMware/Cisco virtualization, ERP and application integrations, and network security. "

2:07 AM
I need a Windows expert.
Is @MDMarra good enough?

Rex
sigh whine whine.. bitch bitch.. that's a good 75-80% of the questions on meta.serverfault

lol
isn't that what meta's for?

2:24 AM
@Rex 95%
tell the users I hate them.

@ewwhite I assume it's about why snmp.exe is using so much memory?

@voretaq7 rants about the OOM Killer, volume 72
1
Q: OOM despite available memory (cache)

YangWe've been running into the OOM killer despite nearly half of our memory being used for the FS cache. We've been logging memory stats once per minute (as reported by top), but there seems to be plenty of availability. ... Mem: 15339640k total, 15268304k used, 71336k free, 3152k buffers...

@RyanRies it is, but I decided to dig in DEEP and figure it out myself.

Shakespeare on the Server presents - Julius Caesar!
PostgreSQL stars as Julius Caesar.
Featuring the OOM Killer as Brutus.
And Poor Sysadmin as Cinna.
@ewwhite "Because SNMP daemons leak memory like a sieve"?
  PID USERNAME THR PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE C TIME WCPU COMMAND
 1424 root           1  44    0 39472K  9336K select  4 313:59  0.00% snmpd
9M resident. 39M total size. that server has only been up 66 days.

@voretaq7 naw... because of this...

2:33 AM
@ewwhite What service(s) run on that thing?

@ewwhite . . . . man, you windows admins just fucking ROLL in shit, don't you?
2

@ewwhite I love Windows personally, but to be honest, SNMP is one of those things that if you have to run it, then I'd recommend running it on *nix. The Microsoft SNMP engine was phoned in at best. It's deprecated now and will be completely eliminated in the future. There are vastly superior ways to monitor most systems already, and MS has not put any more effort into their SNMP engine for many years, hence why you never saw MS release a v3 engine.

@ShaneMadden it's a high-frequency (LOL) trading server for a company somewhere in Oceania

@Cole I've not had one, but I do enjoy a porter and I like smokey foods.

I encountered this earlier today. We turned over a bunch of HP servers to a financial client... and they were like, "why there so many TIME_WAIT sessions in netstat"
and it turned out that my counterpart imaged the HP servers without installing HP drivers...

2:36 AM
@RyanRies MS will continue to support SNMP for a good long while, because a lot of shit relies on it. And all SNMP engines are half-assed.

leaving both adaptec and LSI storage management software on the box

@ewwhite Google says 34572 is some IBM storage controller noise..?

probing away like a bitch...
@ShaneMadden Adaptec's software...

@ewwhite yeah SNMP on windows sucks. Just don't use it.

so I fixed it earlier today on the HP boxen...

2:37 AM
@ewwhite Destroy!

@ewwhite "Are you my mommy RAID controller?"

^^

@voretaq7 With the possible exception of Blink that was the creepiest episode evar.

BURN IT

Rex
2:38 AM
@MDMarra WTF?

"We had to do it this way because automatic connections weren't being made to the hub site"

@ScottPack Don't blink - blink and your write cache is dead!

No shit they werent

Pretty much

@MDMarra I have 36 DCs distributed globally in one of my forests. DEFAULT-FIRST-SITE-NAME for the win.

2:39 AM
Haha

@ewwhite I like the comma
commas in port number are just AWESOME

@voretaq7 I was fighting with perl module that, when calculating median, put commas in the numbers.
@voretaq7 Do you have any idea how much that fucked with my CSV output, and how embarrassingly long it took me to figure out why the fuck that row had an extra column?

@ScottPack Stab.

@RyanRies they asked if I could tidy up the script that creates the manual connections

@ScottPack StabStabStab

2:40 AM
I've got 36 DCs in one forest, 17 DCs in another forest, 4 DCs in another forest, 24 DCs in another 3-domain forest, and a whole lot of other legacy bullshit that I do not even have the desire to think about

@voretaq7 Kiwis.

@voretaq7 No. Doubt.

@ewwhite stab and eat

@MDMarra Script that creates manual connections... oh god

The kiwifruit, often shortened to kiwi in many parts of the world, is the edible berry of a woody vine in the genus Actinidia. The most common cultivar group of kiwifruit ('Hayward') is oval, about the size of a large hen's egg ( in length and in diameter). It has a fibrous, dull greenish-brown skin and bright green or golden flesh with rows of tiny, black, edible seeds. The fruit has a soft texture and a sweet but unique flavor, and today is a commercial crop in several countries, such as Italy, New Zealand, Chile, Greece and France. History Kiwifruit is native to southern China wh...

2:41 AM
Yeah. I just designed a new replication topo with more than one site link. Problem solved.

@voretaq7 This is the biggest nasty hack I've ever put in code. And only because it hurt so much to have to do it. $median =~ s/,//g;

oh fuck you Wikipedia. You have a delicious, mouthwatering image of kiwifruit, and you show the fucking MAP?You SUCK.

@voretaq7 Then another line for the standard deviation and one for the mean.

@ScottPack pfft, you have not yet begun to =~ -- call me when you can't remember what the regex does again...

@voretaq7 Oh, I've done that, son. I have done that.
@voretaq7 I started using shit like RegExp::Common just for that very reason

2:44 AM
@MDMarra That's pretty big. Even in my biggest environments I'll have maybe a dozen sites, with one site for something like Amsterdam, one for Texas, etc... but I have not had an environment with a legit need for 120 sites before.

@ScottPack Wuss
:)
next thing you'll be telling me you use email::valid
if ($mail =~ /.+\@.+\..+/) { # Fucking good enough.

@MDMarra And I always press the network engineers for fully meshed connectivity between sites, so I usually have it on easy mode.

^ I cringe every time I see that.

@voretaq7 I've had .+ bite me in the ass one too many times.

I'm claiming the ability to type on this keyboard without making any noise that wakes anyone else in my house a skill

2:47 AM
@RyanRies this was full mesh MPLS but with lots of T1s

@RyanRies Full mesh is nice, but I hate setting them up. Too many places for things to go wrong and you usually need a proper internal routing protocol

Oh that regex will bite HARD when someone enters a@b@c.@ as a email address :-)

@voretaq7 If they do that then they deserve to have the script crash

For that matter it will also accept a string of @ signs with one period in it :)
@MarkHenderson the scripts usually proceed along just fine, and then hand the @-burger to your MTA
(which promptly slaps it with a fish and drops it down the chute to /dev/null)

@voretaq7 I just lol'd when read @-burger

2:49 AM
gn@-burger

I haven't had a burger in a long time.

@ScottPack what's stopping you?

I'm slowly seeing that most of the IT world is as bad as /r/sysadmin
2

@MDMarra I'm slowly seeing Server Fault devolve into /r/sysadmin but with less snark
on the one hand that speaks volumes about everyone's professionalism.

@voretaq7 less snark?

2:49 AM
@voretaq7 I usually get something else. The brew pub that has good burgers also has pretty good falafel.

on the other hand DEAR SWEET JESUS I WANT TO KILL SOMEONE
@MarkHenderson well, on the main site.

@MarkHenderson Yes. That's because the closest thing to a moderator that /r/sysadmin has is Simmons.

@voretaq7 I just got chewed out for being too nice to a customer, so I'm in the killy-kill-stab-stab mood now too. I was nice to this guy inside a clients IT department so he took that as an opportunity to blame me personally for something that has absolutely nothing to do with me.

Here's the thing. Here, there is "yo, I want to stick my dick in a light socket" and then we close it. There, it's "hey, I want to stick my dick in a light socket" and then twenty people tell them that it's a good idea and three people even tell him how awesome sticking their dicks in light sockets was.
5

@MarkHenderson Too.. nice?

2:51 AM
@MarkHenderson Whelp, that'll be the last time you go out of your way to help him, won't it? :)
@MDMarra ...wait, you weren't in the sexuality.SE beta too were you?

Fixed.

No sir

@ShaneMadden Yep. Instead of explicitly telling the guy he's a fuckwad I gave him an out by saying "This is the problem, but I guess it could be something I haven't though of"

I fixed a Windows problem! That's like... I'm halfway to being @MDMarra!

@MarkHenderson oh I never say the last part

2:52 AM
@ewwhite What was it? Crappy storage controller software?

@MDMarra I'm confused. Are you saying you're not in favor of sexually assaulting light sockets?

@ewwhite yep! One more problem and you've got the requisite "two things"

@ewwhite Installed drivers?

@ewwhite You need to stroke your beard and mutter about .local.

keep it up!

2:52 AM
"To the best of my reasoning, the problem is X. If it's not X please let me know and I'll investigate further."

Rex
@MDMarra so.. how was the experience when you were sticking your dick in the light socket?

@MarkHenderson Ahh. Gotcha.

@ShaneMadden Yep.

@Rex ask me on /r/sysadmin

2:53 AM
@Rex I'm going to assume it was either "electrifying" or "shocking"

something like 12,000 connections open.
SNMP was choking on it

Most of my day was tracking down a DNS problem that only occurred once an hour, for 30 seconds.
It ended in profanity directed at jruby.

@ShaneMadden reliably once an hour at the same time?

@ShaneMadden jruby makes the baby jesus cry

2:55 AM
@MDMarra Yup. From :59:40 to :00:10, more or less.

Ha. Awesome

I feel like I've had several wins today
Team – When proposing critical servers (i.e. database, etc.), please start using HP when possible. It isn’t in the QB yet, but JJ can get quotes as needed. Generally, speaking do not let the CapEx cost be a deterrent. If pricing needs to be the same or close to a similarly configured SuperMicro then we will likely match.

Yeah. Anycasted DNS server which had taken over primary due to a service restart. The jruby thing on an hourly cron was RAM-hungry enough to knock some of the DNS cache into swap and cause queries to time out when the swap couldn't be accessed quickly enough.

From the head of our sales team.

2:57 AM
Now I can't get "You're the One that I Want" out of my head.

@ewwhite I wish I had enough purchase volume to get treated nice by my server vendors

@ewwhite first HP, then you fixed a windows problem. Man, you're living the dream!

@voretaq7 A former employee (who now works at red hat) apparently thought it was amazing.

@ShaneMadden well
that's two things wrong with them then isn't it?
they like redhat, and they like the JVM.

Who knows? I may climb to the top of the tag!!

2:59 AM
@voretaq7 More than just two...

@voretaq7 That video freaked me the fuck out
